art and design strategy
Art for the Cancer Care Centre Art at the Heart (AATH) is the official arts charity for the Royal United Hospital Bath, and will use its 12 years of expertise to ensure that there is a clear art and design strategy for the Cancer Care Centre from the outset. This means that the approach to the build and clinical care will be considered together in order to create a truly holistic healing environment, enabling the RUH to offer an exceptional level of care for patients within an inspiring building and surroundings. It is advisable to appoint a lead artist to the project, who can work alongside AATH, RUH Capital Projects, IBI Architects and Kier Group, in order to produce a coherent and inspired brief at the earliest stage possible.
“We strive to create successful healthcare facilities that encourage a sense of community and social atmosphere, always considering humanistic elements such as the integration of patient privacy, comfort and responsibility to the natural environment. Our work is progressive and innovative through our research, development and application of new initiatives, working in partnership with our clients and communities to ensure successful implementation.” Architects: IBI Group

In our brief we will work with the following objectives • Offer an exceptional environment for patient care – providing cutting edge art and design to maximise overall performance of the build • Provide a welcoming landscape – apply design principles to the development of the whole site, rather than only focusing on the building • Connecting the inside to the outside – bring views from outside in, get light into the building through glazing and layout and get long views out • Excellent finishes to achieve a high quality, non-institutional building and internal finishes • Consideration and openness for patients, staff and key stakeholders to engage in creative proposals and projects • The Forever Friends Appeal has a target to raise £250,000 for art and design at the Centre. Inclusion of design at the outset can influence the architectural structure and cost saving comes from getting the items embedded in the scheme as early as possible • Potential to collaborate with universities, colleges and schools on themes such as heritage, therapeutic gardens, horticultural therapy and landscape design.

“The practice of using the arts to promote healing and happiness is as old as the arts themselves. For early civilisations, aesthetic beauty in objects or surroundings and the soothing rhythms of words and music contributed to the balance and harmony between bodily systems and environment which was believed to maintain good health.” (Arts, Health & Wellbeing Beyond the Millennium: How far have we come and where do we want to go? Supportive gardens
Understanding the benefits of adding greenery into a built environment to help improve health is not a new concept. Knowledge and research into fields such as health psychology and behavioural medicine have demonstrated that incorporating real nature content and vegetation can help to reduce stress in patients, visitors and staff and even lessen a patient’s pain in some instances. “Supportive gardens in healthcare facilities potentially can be an important adjunct to the healing effects of drugs and other modern medical technology, and help improve the overall quality of care” Roger Ulrich What’s more, research has linked poor design to detrimental health effects such as higher anxiety, delirium, increased need for pain medication, elevated blood pressure and sleeplessness. Taking on board this knowledge we propose that the landscape takes centre stage, driving the design both externally and internally and incorporating the healing properties that a garden has to offer, such as light, space and fragrance into the design strategy from the very beginning.
