Susan Dubin Shulamit from The Song of Songs Come, come to me, my love, my fair one. I am the one for whom your soul seeks. Come to me. Taste the honey of my lips. Sip the spiced wine of my kiss. My breasts are two fawns seeking you in the fields. My navel is a round goblet, ready to overflow with your love. I yearn for your love, my shepherd, my fair one. Come, come to me. Return, my love, my fair one. I am the only daughter of my mother. I wait for you in the garden. I will wait by the bed of spices. Surely you will come to me. You have tasted my grapes and pomegranates. Return, my beloved. ENCHANTED GARDEN by Lark

My vineyard, O Solomon, is yours. Make haste, my beloved. Mountains of spices surround me. Embrace me with your right hand. Set me as a seal upon your heart. You will look into my eyes and know peace.

Ruth When I said that I would follow you, I did not know where we would go. I did not know who we would meet. I did not know. When I said that I would be one with your people, I did not know how different our life would be. I did not know how bitter you would become. I did not know. When I said that I would accept your God, I did not know if your God would accept me. I did not know if I could truly believe. I did not know. When my husband died My heart was cold and dead. Within me there was no spark of love Except for Naomi My Mother. How was I to know When I followed her I would find the kindling That would light my heart’s fire And warm my soul? Your people have shown me kindness and compassion. Your kinsman has accepted my love.

RUTH by Vered Galor

Now I am a daughter of Israel even though I was born a stranger. Now I am home. Now I know that my life was not over when my husband died. Now I know that love can be mine again. Now I know that happiness still awaits me. Now I know.

Alexandra S. Thompson Everett Ruess One headlamp lights the arid canyon lands redolent with ancient human presences, gigantic, impenetrable slick-rock battlements fade into darkness, and complete the silence. Disoriented by the sun’s sudden fall, With naught but the wind’s wild yodel He leans against the unmarked hole, later known as Davis Gulch, 1934. Farther up the canyon, the tribes have left Anasazi ruins. The doorsill he caresses with white paint: NEMO: a word Roman, meaning “No One,” or “No Man.” Jimson weed, and the narrow panoply of clouds armours the moon like a liturgy to the god who never finds him, the god of the Hopi dances and the dried riverbeds.

THE EVENING TIME by Jenik Cook

Lovesong Worksong On Queen Anne Boulevard, an informal emerald necklace of Norway Maple, Crimean Linden & European Chestnut shade our footsteps to match the darkening night—but our noses detect its native species: fir, cedar & hemlock.

The weatherworn docks empty tonight. We circle the marina desiring to touch the perfect, translucent circles rain forms on floating lily pads— yet to touch, would be to disturb the perfect stillness that envelops this place.

The road slopes downward once the Sound is in sight, mountains swathed in clouds like sleeping infants, a hawk circles over fragrant red chrysanthemums—and the immense beauty of this sight belongs to us, and we to it.

This isn’t the first time we’ve gone down this path wordlessly instructed by the happy canines to savor scent before sound before sight I lean close, touching your neck— the dogs are right: this is all I need to know you.

ETHEREAL CITY by Lark

Fires on the Ocean of God The fairest nights I fought for you, turning my body into soul for you, my life into art. Still, I caterwaul and wash my past, a sea lion, sick for you, stuck to my raft. Dive and I may lose you, in the massed Ocean of God, in Lucifer I stay, I wait, wait for you, my Charles my muse, I am lost without your fires.

AWAKEN YOUR FEMININE POWER WITH THE SECRETS OF AN ANCIENT PRIESTESS

AWAKEN ENERGY

SHAKUNTALI WITH LOVE

Bring positive change to your destiny, improve your health, heal your family karma, and receive the secret of Ancient Wisdom from the Siberian Shaman and Priestess Shakuntali. SHAKUNTALI invites women to expand their potential by awakening the power of their own breath, and experiencing new horizons through the awakening of their own feminine power. "I'd choose breath work over almost anything else on a weekend because I'm finally leveling up my life!" said a young woman in Hartford. We've heard "I can move freely for the first time in 10 years!" from many women who suffered from back trauma spanning ten years back. Shakuntali had a difficult childhood of physical and emotional abuse including the rejection of her individuality and the condemnation of those close to her. From early childhood she was aware of her super abilities; she saw the past, present, and future of people around her. She predicted catastrophes. And the difficulties of her life had made her stronger. When she was 12 she already stood on a spiritual path of self development. You can read about her real life stories in After Death and Adventures of Mystics.

blessings from her 12th-generations ancestors, has been awarded a Doctor of Psychology, founded the international healing academy GYUD, written two books, and coached Hollywood stars. Shakuntali continues to spend her time helping those in need, and teaching others to do so themselves. The benefits are mutual. After her recent annual physical exam, her doctors exclaimed as they did a year ago, “Shakuntali’s body age stopped at 20 years old!”

Now Shakuntali has begun sharing the centuries old priestess secrets to awaken feminine power, ignite inner breakthroughs, illuminate new possibilities, and clarify life's purpose in order to finally release our past and access the healer within each of us. Learning cosmic laws of female charm, creating balanced relationships with partner can awaken the new epiphanies our souls have been longing and enable us to fully reclaim our feminine power!

When we ask Shakuntali how she stays so young, her answer is always the same.

Shakuntali developed her White Shaman abilities and received

omen are involved in the process of our existence naturally, as females delivering, creating, and supporting life.

Evolving and growing while gaining wisdom is part of participating in the human condition, the good, happy, sad, and heartbreaking, all part of being. The physical, emotional, social, and psychological parts of living make us who we are and, as artists, what and how we create. Creating is a way of expressing which can be louder than talk, satisfying, fulfilling, and lifesaving beyond speech. It is a legacy we leave to the next generation, no matter what form of art we are involved and evolve with. The words we use in writing prose or poetry, doing photography, painting or printing, composing music, playing an instrument, dancing, singing, acting or designing, all enrich our life and our community and eventually society. If somebody were to ask if I would do it again, the answer is “yes”, without any hesitation. I will want to create art; love architecture and will always choose to express myself. I strongly believe that Silence is not an option. As a woman who has lived through stages of growth and experiences that make us gain the wisdom of life, I can say that the process is full of surprises. As an artist I have told about my existence through my Art with the images and procedure changing and evolving with me. I have gone through sculptural work and photography to darkroom experimentation and playing with development and mixed media. With the introduction of the digital era, I got involved with the Photoshop application, creating digital collages that opened a new world of possibilities for expression and the creation of images. Women are good at multitasking and have combined creativity and taking care of their families, through their life, while contributing, with their gained wisdom, to the next generation with and through their art.

two- or even three-dimensional object to her painted canvas or paper); she has emerged as a painter. Lark’s painting clearly derives from Bunker aesthetics in its reliance on texture, gesture, and flow. Her color sensibility, however, comes from somewhere entirely different, from artistic impulses that emerged a century and a half (or more) earlier. Focused on representational, usually landscape subjects – albeit ones that often disappear into a painterly scumble (only to reappear on second or third glance) – Lark describes those subjects with sweeping, almost sculpted brushstrokes and clots of paint, as well as a glowing palette that descends from the French Impressionists, luminous and mysterious atmospherics reminiscent of J.M.W. Turner, and a granular embrace of nature – a comprehension of space itself as part of the natural order – that brings to mind Gustave Courbet and the Barbizon painters.

FOREST DREAMS, Mixed Media on Canvas. 10 • Art & Beyond • March 2019

LARISA PILINSKY, the Russian-born, Los Angeles-based artist and writer, began her visual art activities as a collagist. She began her professional involvement with art as a journalist advocating for other artists, specifically the Armenian-Russian Bunker group; but as her connection deepened to the adventurous and open-spirited Bunker artists, she found herself moved to make art herself, with their encouragement. Partly in deference to the Bunker artists’ powerful experiments with pigments and color materials, Lark turned to collage rather than to painting to make her first “mature” works. Entering artmaking this way opened up a kind of “back door” for her, allowing her to gain understanding of form and color and texture without picking up a brush. That came later. Over a few years Lark gradually weaned herself off collage (although more than occasionally she will still attach a

In her most recent paintings Lark becomes most completely a painter at the same time as she employs paint in an almost collage-like way. She attaches strokes of pigment to one another and the canvas rather than modelling and blending them into conventional representations. The active quality of her surfaces emerges from this visceral approach; the paint retains its physical presence, its objecthood, perhaps at the expense of the subject but ultimately to the benefit of the mood. The image is not so much a depiction as it is a description in paint; the effect is not one of picture but of sensation. Floral and maritime and forest subjects churn and transmute as if seen not on the ground but in the clouds, or in a fever dream. This is paintforward work, an anti-natural naturalism that proudly evinces its Bunker-induced sensuality and its debt to an earlier painterly avant garde.

I SEE YOUR SOUL 2. Oil on Wood.

My work is politically based and emerges from a place of inspiration and social concerns. I must be inspired by the subject I am compelled to recreate upon canvas. It may be the stance of the person; the color of their skin; the shape of their body or what they are wearing. The best portraits are when the soul of that person emerges from behind their eyes. Even when I paint a tree or a rock, I become one with the object. Whatever it is, when I paint, I become excited, sometimes frustrated and finally satisfied as I see what I have created with the help of my ancestors, long deceased. I believe being an artist involves a social responsibility to incite change and transform consciousness. It also to bring peace to a troubled soul. I believe if I had started oil painting at 13 instead of 63, I would have been a fashion designer. I love the lines that form

the shape of the human body, and the texture of cloth and it's movement upon that body like a human tree fascinates me. When I was young, there were not many images of young, defiant, black women like the ones described in the poetry of Maya Angelou such as "I'll Rise"-she writes", Does my haughtiness offend you? You may shoot me with your word, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I'll rise. Does my Sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise that I danced like I've got diamonds at the meeting of my things?" I love my work to be powerful! Presented by LarkGallery larkgallery.com

Melissa Arostegui JILL OF ALL TRADES. Oil on Canvas.

When MELISSA AROSTEGUI was in kindergarten, the Park District of Oak Park sponsored an art contest in which students in the area were asked to draw their favorite place in Oak Park. Melissa drew her house using simple geometric shapes and primary colors. Her drawing was selected as the winner and was published in the local paper, The Oak Leaves. From this moment on, Melissa knew she wanted to be an artist. Fortunately, Melissa’s parents were supportive of her artistic aspirations. Her mother was an artist herself, whom Melissa often observed painting with water colors in her basement studio, and always encouraged Melissa to create. When Melissa turned 11, her parents signed her up for private art classes and she continued taking classes throughout high school where she was introduced to the works of many world-renowned artists. She was particularly inspired by the use of color and shapes in the work of Paul Gauguin, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall and Georgia O’Keefe. After high school, Melissa attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. While there, she studied the works of Elizabeth Murray, Wolf Kahn, and David Hockney, each of whom has influenced her work. Since graduating, Melissa has joined professional art associations, including the Chicago Artists Coalition and the Oak Park Art League and has participated in many art exhibitions. She has also donated her artwork to charities including Hephzibah Children’s Association in Oak Park and The Other Theater Company in Chicago, IL. ECLIPSED. Digital Photo Collage Lt. Ed. Archival Print.

SUSANNE BELCHER, a native Californian, and award winning mixed media semi-abstract artist, began incorporating photography into her paintings and collages several years ago. Her experimentation with transparency film, scanning images, layering, overlaying and collaging these elements into her creations extended her visual language. Her images, always compelling, whether minimal or complex, retain a consistent emotional narrative component that is unique, sophisticated and often surreal and mysterious. Her innate ability to distill images through layers of reduction and compilation in mixed media provided a natural transition to digital photography. She has exhibited in Germany and galleries throughout So. California in both solo and group exhibitions since 1991. The recipient of numerous awards, her work is held in private and corporate collections in the U.S. and Europe. She was a founding partner and represented artist of the former Abbot

Kinney Art Gallery (Venice, CA), is currently represented by Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA) and continues to be a featured artist at Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery (DTLA). She is an active member of Women Painters West, Thousand Oaks Art Association, California Art League and currently sits on the Board of Collage Artists of America and The Fine Arts Club of Pasadena. She is also co-author of an art/nature essay book “Looking for 527” about the journeys of a Yellowstone Wolf killed in 2009 during the first Montana wolf hunt (available on Amazon.com where all royalties go directly to YPF). Her current work continues to be impacted by her interest in architecture, her background in psychology, love of nature, sustainability, symbolism and things spiritual. To experience an ELBE painting is to live a moment in the artist’s exhuberant life. The artist is Elena Berman. She signs her work ELBE. Elena is energetic, exciting, complex–an introspective extrovert, you might say. However, one word mostly defines Elena: passionate. Mostly happy, incredibly upbeat. Sometimes angry. Occasionally relaxed. (After all, the artist is human.) But Elena is passionate–always passionate–in her life and in her art. She is also genuine, perhaps the most powerful force in her art, as her paintings express exactly what she is feeling at any given moment. MESSED UP. Marker on Paper. HUI-JU CHEN (MICKEY) graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. Even though she has not been using art and design as her main profession, she has maintained her passion for making art. It is interesting to see how her work has varied from photography to acrylic painting to mixed-media to collage. She hopes to keep being experimental because she believes that, in the art world, there are no real errors, only different thoughts and processes with different outcomes. Without experimentation, she feels, art is not art. She gets inspiration from different aspects of life. She always hopes to learn and create different kinds of work by making use of her own different life experiences. It is normal to have lots of frustrations and doubts as one goes through the phases of creation. For Mickey, the biggest frustration has been the temptation and pressure to build and keep up one particular style in order to be a professional artist. Though it is true that a dedication to one style may enable one to come a little closer to perfection in that style, Mickey feels that art is about taking risks. If she is satisfied with one style, she believes that she loses a very important quality of art--the excitement of experiencing different things in the world. Therefore, she hopes to continue working in different

Los Angeles-based artist SANDRA COOPER is renowned for her distinctive abstract expressionist style. Her paintings and drawings are unique in their ability to stimulate viewers visually and emotionally with both passion and contradiction. Her striking images encourage viewers to use their own mind’s eye to interpret the movement of paint across canvas. Cooper wants to evoke an emotional response to her art, rather than merely object recognition. “If I wanted to recreate exactly what I saw, I would use my camera. My style celebrates the randomness of abstract expressionism.” “Why paint the entire scene when it’s the negative space that fills my imagination with the creative possibilities of ‘What if’” Cooper says. Cooper’s “Heart Felt Series,” painted under her “nom de art” R. Vega, is reflective of the powerful abstract

Elize GLANCE. Acrylic on Canvas.

I understand art to be the universal language of communication and a way of emotionally experiencing metaphysical reality. I imagine a future in which personal creativity is the natural way of living and the physical environment has become the creative material and/or medium. As an artist, the bases of my artwork are sculpture and objects. I see ceramics as the ideal material nowadays. Clay is the smoothest and the most congenial material for me, perfectly universal, and it allows for creating the ultimate form and color blending. Next to ceramics, I embraced painting. I was captivated by the canvas space and at this juncture in my vocation, the search for harmony of color and texture is my main focus. Most of the time, I find abstract painting extremely fascinating. I try to fill my paintings with expressions strong enough, to let the spectator feel the energy put into the depth of the canvas, transforming the perception of the picture in his own art act. As I search and develop my own style, I look at works by Russian avant-garde artists, Tatlin, Larionov, Malevitch and Kandinsky. The ideas of highest expressiveness of shape, color and spiritually fulfillment for me are the paintings of the Russian icon painters Dionysiy and Andrei Rublev, where pictorial surface gets properties of portals between physical worlds and exquisite spheres. The only way I see being a true artist today: experiencing the spiritual world and its expression by available earthly materials. Meanwhile, I don’t limit myself to abstract painting. Nowadays, the real and objective world as impacted by the information technology phenomenon is developing so quickly that it’s possible to express it only with short figurative cues and quotations. In summary, I understand art as a comparison of immediate and eternal, short and infinite, corporal and imperishable, trying to understand our earthly reality in the context of the Universe. Irene Fire

"It is not a quaint world of beauty but a world where indescribably gorgeous colors can hurt your eyes. It is not a world of evil but a world where unmitigated emotion can mix pleasure with pain in a volatile cocktail." Art critic, artist, and collector Dan Prince made these observations in Passing in the Outsider Lane: Art From the Heart of Twenty-One Self-Taught Artists. They apply so powerfully to the work of Irina that her painting Awakening is on the cover. Irina proudly takes the "fire" in her maiden name – Fireman – as a metaphor - for the brightness of her canvases. "I didn't hold a brush in my hands for the first time until the end of 1991 – since then I've held it tight and never let it go. I work tirelessly, often all night; I forget time and find myself in different worlds. The indescribable states I experience are like those first pure, adolescent feelings of falling in love, when you cease to be the property of Earth. The particularly deep, coloristic density with which her work lies on the canvas determines the originality and memorability of the images she creates; their energy causes them to merge and compress themselves into a cacophony of phosphorescent colors so intense it almost produces sounds. Using these highly-charged combinations of colors in the finest-hued moods, Irina expresses her own most complex emotions. "I never begin with a predetermined theme – I let each theme define itself on the blank canvas. My hand moves on its own as my subconsciousness carries me to an unknown beyond. When I step back and look at the image I've produced – I can't believe it was me.

WOMAN WITH THE GUITA. Acrylic on Canvas.

Irina's works have been exhibited in synagogues, cultural centers, art festivals, and galleries in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Nashville. As part of Dan Prince's collection they have been shown in museums across the country. Her works are held by private collectors in the US, Canada, Israel, Germany, Russia, and Ukraine. PEACE ON EARTH. Acrylic on Canvas. ALL THAT IS GOOD. Acrylic on Canvas.

I was exposed to the world of visual art at young age, in my birthplace, Melbourne, Australia. My mother painted in oils and sculpted, and she often encouraged me to paint along with her. After high school, I went to Ontario College of Art in Canada, where my focus was fine art. I had intended to carry on in my education to become a medical illustrator (as I also had an interest in health care), however I got sidetracked and moved to the Bahamas. There, I married and had two little girls. During my six years on the island, I painted in watercolor and sold my work through local tourist galleries. I eventually moved back to Canada and became absorbed with the demands of everyday life. In the last 15 years, I have been fortunate to have the time to delve more deeply into my art and yoga career. I believe that my diverse life experiences (relationships, travel, career changes and personal interests) are represented in my paintings. My style is considered "whimsical" ....a reflection of my thoughts, dreams and hopes for a happier world. My work can be seen in galleries, restaurants, spas and yoga studios in Canada and the USA. I currently have a studio and gallery in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Presented by LarkGallery larkgallery.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 27

OCTOBER. Oil on Canvas.

The initial inspiration for Catherine Kuzma’s paintings, nature, landscapes, serve as the spark that ignite a much deeper and intimate conversation with the subtle through the vehicle of painting. Sometimes the conversations are smooth and easy ones, while others more labored, thick with many layers. Regardless, the process has always been a meditative one for her, rich with realization. “Painting is what feeds me, it keeps my soul lit and burning. Without it I feel only half alive.” Currently her painting Under A Blue Umbrella is being exhibited at the National Arts Club in NYC, for the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club’s 122nd Annual Open Juried Exhibition . Her painting Chill Through The City is on view through February 2nd at the Medford Arts Center’s Faces and Places Juried Exhibition, juror Philip Carroll. The same painting was

GALINA KOVSHILOVSKY’s paintings derive from her Russian origins. One feels the breath and wildness of a massive country and yet the simple handiwork of its centuries-old culture. Galina’s paintings capture the sprawling epic erosion of tradition with a visually striking exploration of color in its infinite variety and vitality. Her paintings large and small, capture the imagination with visually stunning swirls and movements of the eye, emotion and imagination. We are left breathless with fascinating lovingly layered colors where the rules of organized thought clash and intersect with rituals and beliefs. We are moved. We are coaxed. BLUE INLET. Acrylic.

EXPULSION. Acrylic.

BARBARA NATHANSON uses art as a means to express her reactions to her environment. In this way what you see is akin to the emanations from a sound box where the acoustics of sounds, life circumstance, and landscape have combined at one moment in time. The subject matter is not the subject. The process is often as important as the result. She has recently included with her abstract, tactile paintings, more objective work, but the impetus is the same. Just as each person responds differently to music, Barbara expects each viewer will respond differently to what they see. Barbara studied with Marvin Hardin at California State University, Northridge where she obtained her MA degree in art. DIVIDED. Mixed Media.

I believe that I was born an artist. My sculptures represent my passions of movement, music and nature. My art is especially a reflection of my early career as a dancer. Growing up on the beach in Israel, I was motivated by the fresh air of the sea, feeling the crumbly sand on my toes and listening to music. My soul awakened to the beats of music and I began to dance as a form of expression. When I was four years old I started taking Ballet classes. At the age of 14, I became a professional dancer throughout Israel and was featured in the theater, movies, television shows, and the Israeli opera. My parents always believed in me and helped me to pursue my dreams. In college I studied ceramics, painting, and pottery which led

to sculpting. Using my hands to form, discover and create the clay connects me to earth and brings me back to nature. My two passions collide as nature and movement become one in a sculpture. I use metal, water clay, oil clay, wood, and recycled materials to sculpt. The finished product is in an acrylic, bronze, fired clay, wood or natural recycled objects. Spirituality plays a big role in my work. I begin each project by lighting a candle and saying a prayer to my spirit asking for guidance with my work. Listening to music allows my body to move and mold the sculptures. Presented by LarkGallery larkgallery.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 35

SEVENTEEN EGGS 15. Photography, New Media, Digital.

Be it brush on canvas or a camera lens to the world, creativity, from an early age has been a significant part of my life. It has led me to destinations such as New York, Berlin, Rome, London and Amsterdam in search of material for my projects. Urban Dreams is such a collection that draws inspiration from the streets of these iconic cities. Most of my artworks are digital collages. The process to create a final version of my artwork can take quite a long time. It all starts with an idea. After that I start to gather material, this could involve for example going to photograph Scandinavian rock art as I did for Archaic Dreams series. Materials can be almost anything – hand drawings and paintings, my photos and even sometimes vector graphics. The most important thing is that they are my own unique creation. The final stage of my creative process involves a lot of choices and decisions between slight variations in tonalities and saturation that will result in the final version. I have used the artist name Mirja Birgitta since 2015 and I write also an artist blog Arshop in my native Finnish language. I have five hand-signed museum quality prints of each piece available. They are also available as poster quality re-prints, bearing my logo and can be found on the Saatchi Art online store.

PENSIVE. Oil on Canvas.

I discovered my interest in art at a young age visiting art museums back in Russia. In my childhood I occasionally entertained myself by drawing caricatures and small sketches. They became popular and were collected by friends and family. I gravitated to portraiture and figurative art. What intrigues me most is uniqueness, emotions, and harmony I see in the faces of people around me. I want to share and expose this inner beauty. As I struggled to find my own path, the works of Sergei Bongart, Robert Henri and Joaquin Sorolla guided me. Learning in art is a never-ending and exciting journey. I have

spent much time improving my skills and studying the figure at life drawing and painting classes of California Art Institute and Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, LAAFA. I feel lucky and privileged to study with wonderful artist Glen Orbik, Ignat Ignatov, Vadim Zang, and Millie Green. I am a member of Portrait Society of America and Oil Painters of America. MY WORLD THROUGH THE FLOWERS. Acrylic on the Board.

To make art and see it being born from my own hands fulfills one of my greatest dreams. I like the moment when a new creation is not yet mine, not yet in my imagination - but already is tickling my subconscious. Working with paints, knowing their elasticity, and exploring new textures and color shades allows me to move them on the canvas spontaneously. But it only seems so. In reality it happens under the guidance of my soul. It is my soul that expresses itself on canvas, showing its flights and falls, joys and sadness, and then gives birth to an image. My hands only choose and move colors around, before the appearance of a new image gives rise to new fantasies. When a fantasy desires to continue over a series of my art, the

process gives birth to imaginary realities which emerge from the depth of my soul and cry out to find release on the canvas. Only then can my hands themselves put down the paints and hang alongside my body. Fatigue and relief cover me with a light veil. Nothing more needs to be corrected and completed. My soul enjoys the liberation of previously collected feelings and impressions of life whose meaning was unclear to me but which I can now express. Also what my paintings let me express on canvas is a joyful light shining from the soul. It is the wonderful space of creation.
