SHOULD ARTISTS PAY FEES

I

to exhibit?

t has been always the case for artists to pay fees in order to exhibit their artwork. Most of the times, they end up carrying the artwork back and forth regardless of the cost incurred. Frustration is the normal feeling for artists. That is why, many of them have cut down on such exhibitions and some galleries have closed down as a result. Different artists learned different lessons and the strong remain. Some artists have stopped exhibiting for the high cost, sadly to know. And others had to find second jobs to make the ends meet. Even though, the art-market is like a growing giant, yet, some artists somehow, have given up.

No denial that artists are the main feeders for art organizations but with less fortune in some cases when there is no sale. Having said that, the question is; should/should not artists pay fees to exhibit their artwork? Yes and No. When we pay anything anywhere is to receive certain services, with the same token, paying fee to exhibit to receive all promotion and exposure attached is a normal expectation. Having said that, sale of artwork can’t be guaranteed in any exhibition. Nevertheless, when exhibiting in a physical gallery, Galleries must have their own clients and must know what their clients like and purchase. It is the gallery’s homework to build up good clients/art buyers and to know whom to invite to the reception. Accordingly, they invite certain artists of certain styles to exhibit; in return of a good percentage of sales will be taken. If the sale is poor or none, obviously, galleries did not do their homework and were concern only about collecting fees. In general, galleries do not invest the amount of money on promoting an exhibition in comparison to exhibiting in reputable exhibitions where measurable budget spent on promotion targeting thousands of guests and art collectors and spending thousands of hours preparing for such huge exhibitions. In this case, it is worth the investment/paying fee. Even though, sale will not be guaranteed still, artists will have a wider exposure. As far as sale goes, will depend on your artwork, who will like it, appreciate its quality and agree with prices. Artist need to keep in mind that will be competing with hundreds of artists exhibiting there. In case of there will be no sale, you will still get your artwork seen by hundreds if not thousands of visitors who seriously, interested in art as the promotion of exhibition was well thought of. In addition, it will look good on your biography as where your art was seen and by whom. Some artists prefer to pay percentage 50%, 60% or even 80% and other prefer to pay fee in wellknown exhibitions and take full control of their artwork and receive the full sale price on their hard work, it is personal

choice. In either case, there are questions artists need to ask before deciding which direction to choose: 1- Reputation: Is the exhibition has a good reputation and well known, to whom? 2- Location: Will the exhibition be held in a well-known location where the crowd is familiar with? 3- Visitors: What kind of visitors/guests usually attend such exhibition and how many? 4- Promotion: what kind of promotion is offered and what is the budget spent on the promotion? 5- Recognition: Is the organizer well recognized, expert and has extended connections? 6- Timing: Will the exhibition take place at a time of an active season of that city/country? 7- Well written agreement: Do they invite you with a legal Agreement stating clearly, all Terms and Conditions? 8- Reasonable cooperation: Do they cooperate well with you and satisfy all your questions? 9- Goal: Are they working only for themselves or for you as well? 10- Question to ask yourself: Will I feel proud to say that I have exhibited there?. 11- In case of exhibiting in a gallery, what promotions will artists receive? In addition to the above, Art today is playing a big role in the world industry that moves massive amounts of money worldwide. Artists’ names and artwork are priced high because of such huge market conducted by big business campaign which is behind artist’s success. When artists have outstanding talents, such talents need to be exposed, promoted, get seen and discovered by the right audience. Such exposure can’t happen inside artist’s studios, unless artists exhibit and select where to exhibit their artwork. The international competition is huge yet, artists need to take the risk. Complaining more than doing something about will not get you anywhere. So make the decisions for yourselves and be responsible for the results. We all do invest on what we believe in doing. Expecting free service is unheard of.

MIST & DUST. Acrylic on Woodboard, 12" x 12"

Maruka Carvajal I was born in Bolivia, and I am a naturalized Spaniard. I have lived in Brazil, Singapore, Colombia, and currently in Washington DC. I was educated to be an architect but my passion led me to dedicate myself to the visual arts instead. I enjoy painting so much! It is a chance to get involved with my thoughts, my memories and my feelings; it's my moment. When I start a painting I always choose colors first; without thinking maybe it's just intuitively or sometimes based on my mood. In my art I like to explore the abstract secrets of cities I have lived in, cities I have passed through, and cities I hope to visit. I bring out the similarities between cities around the world, capturing their true nature. Using different shapes, lines, and vibrant colors I interpret onto my canvas the emotions that cities awaken inside of me. I recall my experiences in different cities that have impacted me and I look into that past at the feelings that came over me in those moments. Some artists inspire me, especially Hans Hoffman because of his exuberant use of color, the relationship between them, and the spatial tension.

I use different acrylics in different to express myself. My strokes reflect my visual language and respond to the impulse to fill the canvas. Using geometric shapes adds structural order to how freely I use colors. In addition, I like to use both paint that is slightly watered down and pain that is thicker. To me this combination of shapes and my free use of colors along with varying viscosities of paint is the most appealing part of my creative process. The colorful nature of my painting makes them stand out and appear bright. Vibrant colors are very powerful tools and I am able to manage their effect on a composition. I am fascinated by cities because they are short-lived but form a long lasting memory. I think my paintings serve the purpose I intended and convey what I want them to. My goal is to make the viewer curious about the meaning behind my painting. I expect my work to represent the places that I have had the fortune to visit or have lived in and I hope it shares these places with the viewer inviting them to take an emotional journey where their spirit can drive free. www.marukacarvajal.com www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 13

Debbi Chan Born and raised in the metropolis of Houston where the glare of sunlit skyscrapers the landscape I was most familiar with did not stop the smooth transition to a landscape of pines and snow in Idaho. What the surprise move did was open my creative mind and allow me to expand and my art to grow. I took up three new mediums and set my schedule to allow for art to be the focus of my time. The mediums were new but I managed to keep to the traditional Chinese style which I took up almost 15 years ago. Days for me are all about art . Making it keeps me busy and rarely does a day go by without it. If not painting I am gathering for it. Looking out my windows I see the vastness of nature about me and watch wildlife romping that I previously could only have seen in a zoo behind bars. My tight drawings loosened and the subjects I once was afraid of painting flow across the leaves of 70 ft. Continuous story

paintings in jumbo folding albums, my newest passion. They are being shown currently at Magnuson Gallery in Kendrick Idaho while awaiting a future home hopefully with WSU in their art museum. After completion I now publish each album as a wordless magazine and make them available to the public. And now the albums are coming to life in galleries you can carry in your pocket. The amazing 3-D app EXHIBBIT allows me to have entire albums on the wall. I have two shows open to the public now and a third will be open any day. You will most likely run into my blogs as well. Hopefully the albums will find their way to a permanent museum that appreciates story telling with art and without words. My time is still about making the art. If you don't make it you have nothing for others to see. http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/s/sosum

FRIEDA INSPIRED. Acrylic on Canvas, 80 cm x 80 cm

Gabi Domenig was born in 1963 in Lienz. Since her early childhood she was attracted to the fine arts, but especially to painting. Gabi took classes in nude painting, color theory, drawing and composition. Especially charcoal, red chalk and pastels on paper and primed wood panels were the medium in the nineties. After her first exhibition in 1999, when she presented 20 large pastel paintings to the public, she began to paint with acrylics on canvas. The strong and bright colors and the way of working with acrylics approached very well to her nature. She concerns herself primarily with the representation of man and especially of women. She tries to capture moments and to build up emotional tensions. The viewer should feel something of her passion when she paints. She does´nt want to stir up. For her art should be life-affirming and beautiful, touching and connecting. A language without words.

Her characters send out varied emotions such as pride, pain, love, sadness, loneliness, joy and longing. They are sensuous, strong, vulnerable, thoughtful, dreamy, seductive, promising and cautious. The figures are mostely located in a particular environment cutout. The expression of the eyes should draw the viewer into its spell and animate him to enter in a deeper communication with the figures in the picture. Flowers, plants, animals, patterns and landscape sections are decorative parts, but are usually situated in the background. Because of her intensive color palette and the figurative painting she is attributed to the Neo-Expressionism. You can find her images in privat collections, in international art books, art magazines and online art galleries. Participation in many national and international exhibitions in Austria, Germany, France, Italy United Kingdom, USA and Brazil. www.domenigartdesign.at

It’s tale and significance has enchanted me for many years and is now encapsuled in the essence of my works. My works evoke contrasting and even conflicting feelings and experiences: hope and death, wealth and poverty, joy and sadness, the light and the dark aspects of hope in life. They reflect the ambiguity and fullness of human nature and power of hope. Within challenging techniques I experiment with abstraction, exploring the significance of gold and its long journey throughout life and history. I attempt to create a luminous atmosphere, to represent hope as the strongest element.” - Roshi Roshi’s philosophy by quoting what she wants to say with her art: “Life is beautiful, live it up!”

“It’s not about immortalising an environment, it’s about freezing an atmosphere and simultaneously reanimate it”- Bert Koeck

Bert Koeck was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1971. He graduated from the Luca School of Arts as a Master Designer in 1996 and then worked for several renouned European offices as an architect. Currently he is a professor and has a hands-on approach to teaching design. Koeck’s artistic knowledge and fascination for different techniques as well as a stubborn sense of abstraction, reflects explicitely in these experimental, two dimensional projects. All experimental work takes root in a "think process, not product"-point of view. "Process", is encouraged by experiments concerning a wide scale of image-capturing techniques. BRUNO WOJNICZ PHOTOGRAPHY.

Bruno Wojnicz “I am engrossed in those intense images delving into abstraction of the soul. The more involved I become in the work the more intense the images. I grew more interested in the contradictions, extreme expressions and the feelings not shown in a moment that underlies a human context. More than merely a snapshot my aim is for the viewer to relate to the emotional circumstance of the image and to draw out of the viewer their own personal story and feelings in the current situation and those drawn from memory. To achieve that “I have been there” or “I am there” instance. In this era of the unfocused and where images move quickly from one instant to the next my aim is to hold the viewer’s attention to allow for a deeper emotional involvement to the work. www.grollefineart.com • www.artstorm.ca

NIGHT CLUB. Oil on Canvas, 30" x 60"

Isabelle Malo was a Leonardo da Vinci fan since childhood. Her and her family have many discoveries in the arts and sciences environment that allowed her to develop a taste for beauty as well for functionality and practical side. Isabelle obtained a degree in Industrial design and to master the new technologies and better understand the world and enabled her to intervene by creating works and objects that can improve the quality of life. The creative process is at the heart of all her steps in the visual arts design. As professor of multimedia and animation, Isabelle has developed with her students several cultural products over a ten years period. This curiosity and constant taste for discovery opened and is still opening infinite doors of her creative possibilities. As an artist and a designer, Isabelle loves interior design, mystery, people-watching, nature, the ocean and the force of the waves on the rocks where her paintings reflect her life. “Dear observers, take the time to look at the details of the many oil paintings linen made with a knife, because there are many. It is up to you to experience and discover the visual message I have for you!” —Isabelle Malo i-malo.com

LOVE AFFAIR. Acrylic on Canvas, 31.5" × 31.5" × 1.5"

Sabina D'Antonio As an artist and photographer, inspiration comes to Sabina in many forms. She sees so much beauty in old weathered things waiting to be discovered once again. Layers of chipped paint, rusted metals, the raw beauty Mother Nature creates over time, these and so much more entwined with my manufacturing background spark new ideas within her. Sabina is a self taught full-time artist with a passion to create and capture a true beauty of art in each painting, with the hopes in making a happy escape for the viewer.

28 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2015

"Sabina paints with energy, spontaneity and emotion resulting in pieces that arouse and captivate the viewer. Her abstract paintings are expressions of her love for colour, textures, and numbers. Sabina has nurtured her independence and artistic freedom and paints spontaneously from within: expressing a feeling, a memory or an impression. Her abstract art is wellknown and collected nationally and internationally. She has been painting her entire life and just recently selling professionally." www.abstractsbysabina.com

NEW MEXICO. Oil on Canvas, 48" x 48"

Silvana LaCreta Ravena is a Brazilian-born artist who moved to the Twin Cities in 2006. She was educated as a psychologist and also holds degrees in art therapy, art history and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts. Since she established her studio in Minnesota, she has exhibited regularly in galleries and art centers throughout the country. I have gallery representation in four states including Minnesota, and her work has been featured in TV art shows and art publications in the US and Europe. The connections between psychology and art have been the constant subject of Silvana’s paintings. She became fascinated with this topic during her practice as a clinical

psychologist – an experience that helped her infuse her art with principles based on different lines of thought in psychology. Since she moved to Minnesota, she has centered her focus exclusively on painting, making it her way of stimulating people’s psychological dynamics. The intention of Silvana’s work is to encourage people to creatively question what they are seeing and to make contact with their innermost being. Art is a way of awakening perception by addressing the senses directly, allowing better conditions to facilitate the communication between the person and his/her deeper self. www.silvanaravena.com

DAY BREAK. Mixed Media on Canvas 48" x 36”

Stephanie Holznecht is originally from the southeast coast of England. She immigrated to the United States at the age of nineteen and attended University upon arrival, obtaining a B.A in Graphic Design and Fine Art. For 10 years Stephanie worked as a graphic designer and art director, leaving to pursue a career in professional art. Stephanie’s current artistic style has changed dramatically from earlier years, moving from realism to a purely abstract artist. With abstract painting she is inspired to let go and free herself to feel art in a totally different manner, reaching levels of emotional strength that far exceeded my expectations as a painter.

30 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2015

Stephanie’s main focus has been in using fluid acrylic paint. A challenging medium, that guarantees a different result with each painting she creates. She has had great success using this medium and her unique layering technique. Stephanie invests in the creation of a piece of art to convey what she feels inside: her thinking, her emotions, her life, her essence and her soul. Stephanie’s goal is to always evoke some emotion from the viewer. There should always be something there for others to be able to read and draw their own conclusions. www.scholznecht.com

LOTUS. Acrylic on Canvas, 12" x 12"

Natalya B. Parris My new (Nov. 2014) acrylic on canvas, 12" x 12" artwork “Lotus" is an “over-sized”, very colorful flower. In it, I wanted to show movement, as though a light breeze touched the flower. To show it, I strategically did not draw the flowers on the center of the canvas and avoid symmetry when I drew the petals. The challenge in this work was to decide where to paint the dots, where to use “double and triple the dots” and what section of the painting should not have dots or have only one layer of dots. To paint so many multicolored dots was challenging and fun at the same time. Frequently, when people see my art, they comment that I have to be the most patient person to create that kind of art. I consider it a compliment, since I am

by nature a very emotional, passionate person and patience did not come to me as a gift; I have been working on it all my life. For me, like for many people, painting is therapeutic. My dots connect to my past as a civil engineer, when I was doing many engineering drawings by hand (it was the time when I learned to paint such perfect dots) and the present time, when I use those dots to create my “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint “– dots artworks.. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Natalya-B-Parris/111488538880248 www.linkedin.com/pub/natalya-parris/18/a1b/820/ https://artavita.com/artists/8737-natalya-b-parris privatenbp@hotmail.com

TIME TO BREAK THE RULES! Too many do’s and don’ts override the creative process. The outcome? Everybody’s art looks alike. After studying Hopper, Sargent, and Turner, I’ve learned a lot about watercolors. It was time for me to create my own contemporary style. Away from the usual and expected. I let myself go. I stopped trying to look like others, and decided to find the ME in my work. I stopped encasing my watercolors in color-dulling glass and lightly lacquered them instead. I started using gouache to dramatize my whites. When on location, I relocate what I don’t like. Having freed myself from all the rules, I discovered a boldness in my work that was never there before. Now I’m “doing my thing!” And I’m having a Hellofa lot more fun doing it! janellen@janeellenmurray.com

Sandy Den Hartog Sandy has had an interest in stones since childhood. Wherever she went, even as a young person, whether it was picnics, vacations, or field trips; she always made sure she had a cup along to collect rocks which were precious to her at the time. Once in high school she took numerous classes in gemology and geology. Then she graduated, got married, and had children. Rocks and gems had to be put on hold for a while. However, she was still able to attend gem shows and art shows when she had the opportunity. She was looking and learning and eventually was able to travel the globe and reignite her interest in gems and minerals. She was struck by how much stones, rocks, gems, and minerals change

from country to country. In bringing back Ethiopian Crosses from Africa, she made her daughters and granddaughters necklaces with the crosses. She was once again hooked with a creative passion for what she could now do with these artifacts. Sandy’s work has been exhibited at Palace Hotel in San Francisco and the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. She has also been a part of several juried shows winning a first place medal in 2010 and 2012 with a Award of Merit in 2012. stitches1@suddenlink.net

GEOMETRY AND COLOR #24. Digital Art, 48" x 36".

Martin Gunter Schoffel is a Venezuelan-Austrian artist that he dedicates his life to create Kinetic Art. At a very young age Martin Gunter Schoffel discovered his love for art and started working with freehand geometric drawings. After several years, his art turned into a passion for geometric and kinetic art. At the beginning of his artistic career he used simple materials like paper and pencil, later his interest for colors grew as well as for new materials such as wood, acrylics, aluminum and photography among others. This experience enhances his work and reinforces his desire to create movement effects in his art with overlaid elements and edited images. As a result we find his pieces framed into the so-called Kinetic Art.

Maria Fernanda LAIRET At this piece the artist utilizes her technique of managing money symbols. She uses the $500 bill of the Bank of Mexico. Frida Kahlo appears with her self-portrait of 1940 on the front of the bill and Diego Rivera on the back. She took Diego Rivera and Mr. Xolotl images to the front where the painting "The Love Embrace of the Universe" by Frida Kahlo was the inspiration of her piece. Then, Diego Rivera was incorporated thru colorless laser on Plexiglas trying to demonstrate the embrace of love that Frida had for him. Thru her creation, the artist tries to highlight the elements of the artwork relating to the social context of Frida’s life in relationship to her personal life. The artwork point out the details of her personality, inspirations and emotions. The colors, shades,

GREAT AND SECRET SHOW. Digital Art.

Diana Whiley I first created fantasy art to go with my writing and found that the digital medium best fit my style. It took time to get the affect I wanted but I’ve now hopefully managed to get the colour and mood right. I am transformed by the creation of art and enjoy opening myself to new experiences. Other pieces of my art range from abstract, to still life but I do love a portrait. Over a number of years I have been both editor and contributor to a number of community art projects and exhibit locally. Entering many on-line competition, I have won several
