THEY CAME; THEY SAW; THEY LOVED IT. The fourth annual Art! Vancouver show wrapped up a great long weekend at the Vancouver Convention Centre last Sunday. As Western Canada’s largest, contemporary art show, over 8,000 visitors and more than 100 artists and exhibitors attended. “What a good experience!” enthused aboriginal artist Adele Maskwa-iskwew Arseneau. “I connected with people from all over.” Arseneau wasn’t the only one who made new connections, particularly on Opening Night, when the fair reached its full capacity. The attendees listened to talks and panel discussions, met artists and watched the Face of Art runway show, in which artists walk the runway with a selected piece of work. Nearly 50 people received a coveted treat: they completed their own projects in art classes taught by the fair’s artists. Various artists’ works were sold, helping the artists gain new fans and interact with other creative professionals. “It was a great opportunity to engage!” said artist Jake Townsend. Art! Vancouver staff were delighted by the turnout; plans are already underway for the fifth annual event, which has been scheduled for Spring of 2019. Mark Dolamore THE PYRAMID. Top of triptych. Nitrocellulose on Polyester JEWEL MANDALA. Middle of triptych. Nitrocellulose on Polyester THE CODES. Bottom of triptych. Nitrocellulose on Polyester.

PYRAMID ART is a genuine art discovery, the first since the Italian renaissance. A simple, mathematical system combined with Jungian observation technique, harnessed feedback with nature, extracting this “alien language”, from an archaic form of binary code. Messianic meaning is revealed that should not exist if our vision of the universe is correct, but that’s actually good news. Mark Dolamore was born in England, his mother was French and he became sensitised as a child to beauty and wonder from annual pilgrimages to his grandparents’ haunted chateau. Mark went to art school in Cheltenham, then set up his studio in Wapping when commissioned by London’s most prestigious department store, to create colourful canvasses for their windows. A transformation in consciousness then brought prolific synchronicity into his life. We all get these magic moments, from time to time, when nature herself seems to communicate, but how can we know if that perception’s real or imagined? Mark Dolamore solved the conundrum by following these signs. Check out his website Pyramid Art tab for the goods on what this all signifies. Guidance from the mind’s other side sent Mark Dolamore to Sao Paulo Brazil, back in the 1980’s where he showed at MASP, South America’s premier public art gallery. He then moved-on to Canada, married into the Trivial Pursuit clan, but returned to Brazil four years later and changed his “style”. Mark now lives in France and has become confined to a wheelchair. Mark Dolamore claims he’s developed psychic synergy with space-time and his Pyramid discovery is proof of it. Now he’s devised a simple, game-like experiment you’re invited into as a coartist. The concept employs a remote physics lab and quantum field interface, called Papolona. Mark claims participation will gradually tune you in to mankind’s hidden hive mind. www.papolona.guru www.artandbeyondpublications.com • 11

LIFE IS KILLING ME. Acrylic, 60cm x 80cm

My intention is to create a world that does not really exist out there but is somehow emotionally connected to the mind. I am not trying to retell a story but rather to reveal the untold. The decorative appearance is a disguise of inner anxiety. Something beautiful outside is not necessarily beautiful inside. In fact, it is a façade. My work is a thin layer lying at the border of beauty and ugliness. The definition of my work 12 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2018

is vague. The only thing I know is to break from the standard. Between depth and shallowness, I am stuck in the middle— just as all of us are stuck between heaven and hell. I try hard to coexist with my sins. Even though I would like to erase them at times, I find it entertaining to cope with the dark thoughts. The longer I am trapped, the more I learn about my fate. www.ratgoofy.com

In the opinion of Mona Youssef Gallery, Curator, Jurist “Barbara Walder has been fascinated by nature since childhood which clearly reflected in her paintings striving to find answers about light and colors in nature and their relationship to man. Working with chalk and gouache, she adds special emphasis on naturalness, authenticity, originality and subjects matter which is important part of her existence. Barbara’s inner rhythm leads her to gracefully connecting elements with sensible brush strokes attracting and mystifying viewers. The moment of “now-ness” the transition from night to day, day to night fascinates her with its peculiar color, a moment of indecision in which its mysterious and perfect beauty unfolds.” Mona Youssef Mona Youssef Gallery

Art & Beyond Interview with

Jenni Souter

Jenni Souter is a native of Sandusky, Ohio. She currently resides beside the water lilies and learned to paint at the young age of 5. After studying in Art, Art Education, and Environmental Art Education, she graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelors of Fine Art majoring in painting with a minor in Art Education. She has continued to nurture and cultivate her passion for art through her role as an elementary art teacher.

ODE TO MONET ( YELLOW LANDSCAPE). 18" x 24"

Q. Was there a point in your life when you decided that you wanted to be an artist?

A. I was in the 5th grade sitting next to a girl and we were both making art. More students seem to favor the art of the popular student. However, I knew my work was better. At that moment, I made it a point in my life's work to prove to the world that I was the underdog. I know I am the better artist. Years later, I ran into my classmate on campus and asked, "How's your art coming?" I hadn't forgotten." I am in business". I smiled knowing I won my first personal great victory. 14 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2018

Q. How would you describe your creative process? A. My creative process derives from personal life experiences, personal relationships, in particular, I try to depict feelings in my paintings with the use of color symbolism based on different emotions that I’ve experienced in my past personal relationships. I want to show that I visualize emotions and feelings that I’ve felt and illustrate that in my paintings, whether it be the peaceful serenity of a loving relationship like a pond in the woods at sunset, the pain of an abusive relationship like an ominous blood red sky and full moon. My goal is

to take a vision, take pictures to help me plan, research the symbolism to find symbols to match my feelings, and decide on which medium matches the vision. Then, when the sun goes down and I am at my most creative, I begin .

artists and styles of art that I may have never known about or had interest in if I had not pursued a degree in art. It has also allowed me to see others’ creativity and artistic views that I see in my students which has inspired some of my own art work.

Q. What do you imagine a viewer experiences when they see your

Q. Who or what is your greatest influence?

work?

A. My goal is for a viewer to not only see a beautiful art work but to also feel the emotions and feelings that I am trying to express in my art. I want the viewer to be able to relate to my art based on their own personal life experiences and to be able to interpret a “deeper” message in my art work, even if it is not the message I intended.

Q. How has your degree in art education influenced your painting and drawing?

A. I believe my art education degree has helped me become a more diverse artist. It has allowed me to not only teach my students about the artists I am inspired by, but also allowed me to learn about other

A. The artists that have inspired me the most are Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keefe. I feel that I have endured many similar life struggles and experiences as both of these artists. My style is very similar to Frida as I try to portray a surreal symbolism in my art work much like Frida did. I am most intrigued by symbols hidden in the art work. Her style is attributed to Neo-Expressionism because of the figuration and the strong color palette. The central theme of her mostly large-format acrylic paintings is always the woman again. snapshots between dream and reality, which should captivate the viewer. Colorful and life-affirming, touching and connecting, aesthetic and respectful. A tribute to life, to love, to nature, and especially a tribute to all the women in the world who do great things and jobs. In work and in the family. With lots of heart, soul and with lots of energy. Tireless for their beloved. And yet, women worldwide do not receive enough respect and recognition so far! As long as women do not have the same equal rights at all levels, there is no real freedom and democracy! It is still a lot to do! She wants to tell stories. As in the past twenty years, she will continue to paint women for the most part. Strong and vulnerable, happy and sad, self-centered and excited, shy and courageous, extroverted and introverted, longing, proud, sensual and spiritual, free and feathery like a bird, moving and resting surrounded by flowers and plants, accompanied by colorful birds and animals, always on the border between dream and reality…. And dreams will turn in reality somedays! For sure. www.domenigartdesign.at

David Bremer DAVID BREMER is an artist from Des Plaines, Illinois. He was born on July 18, 1991. He became interested in art when he was in eighth grade and before he attended high school after graduation, he attended a Maine West High School art workshop. In high school, he focused on learning various mediums of art. He decided to attend Columbia College Chicago from 2010-2014 and he studied art & design. He was fortunate enough to have an art piece displayed at Columbia College Chicago in a display case on the 10th floor in his second year of college. When he was in his last semester at Columbia College Chicago his artwork was on display at C33 Gallery on campus. He graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art & Design in May 2014. Since graduation, his artwork has been at two galleries in the Chicagoland area. He has also participated in many art shows and craft shows. He also has competed in many art competitions as well as my participation in a Fringe Festivals. human anatomy. A study that dates back to the Greeks and beyond. The sculptures incorporate aspects of human motion that started with Kouros figures and developed during the renaissance. These modern versions of this ancient art form are further influenced by the works of the Italian Futurists, Umberto Boccioni, Balls and others. They take flight through the sheer force of human biomechanics and the internal energy that stones and human models bring to the process. Each one of these sculptures comes directly from the beautiful art form of life drawing. Live models, many of whom are artists in their own right, bring their art of human motion into the process. It’s in capturing the flow of these beautiful human beings in drawings that the sculptures are born.

Steven Lustig This art is born out of a love of the human form and its natural motion. Throughout time, man has studied virtually every aspect of himself in great depth. These sculptures represent a further step in that long lineage of study. They are founded in the very basis of the ancient tradition of 24 • Art & Beyond • May/June 2018

Ms. Parris. Her dots are as limitless as her artistic vision –

Curiosity and exploration are entwined in the process of creating art for Natalya B. Parris. She does not limit her artistic imagination and inquisitiveness to one kind of art; she is constantly exploring painting on paper and canvas from oversize to miniature. She finds new surfaces to paint on from recycling materials, metals and wood. Ms. Parris is recognized for creating paintings in her unique artistic style - “Emotional Counterpoints in Paint – Dots.” She started painting in this style in watercolor, then moved to creating dots with acrylic on mixed media and paper. After that, she began to paint dots on canvas. She continued to develop this style; and in order to express powerful emotions, she piled the dots on one another. The dots, like music notes, interacted with the rhythm of the melody - creating emotional counterpoints in a three-dimensional painting. But, that was not enough for

they now appear on tin, wood and 3-dimentional surfaces. Ms. Parris painted this 3-dimentional wooden letter sculpture as a present for her son's 19 birthday. Ms. Parris is currently working on paining wooden boxes and her latest passion is her jewelry line.
