Art of Wellbeing
LAUGHTER IS THE KEY TO WELLBEING IN WALES When it comes to the art of wellbeing, a cup of tea usually does the trick, and there is no more authoritative voice on the subject than that of international specialist Twining's, and this expertise was served up to visitors to a unique Art Of Wellbeing event on October 5-7 at Cardiff’s five star St. David’s Hotel & Spa. Twining's has been around for 300 years, and their Tea Ambassador Mark Nichols enthralled audiences on Sunday October 7 with master classes that will cover the variety of teas in the world, how we came to drink it in the first place, how it benefits our wellbeing, and the art of making a perfect cuppa. He opened guests’ eyes to a world of exotic flavours and some of the rarest teas available within the UK today. Guests even had the chance to win enough tea to last them a whole year! The weekend event was run by World of Wellbeing, whose managing director Nicki Page said: “We all appreciate the healing power of tea, but with 300 years of Twining's’ expertise on the subject, Mark’s expertise will take us to other levels of understanding to investigate the part that tea plays in our overall feeling of wellbeing.” The Art of Wellbeing event celebrated innovative new thinking with inspiration for delegates to achieve a more balanced lifestyle and a positive, better way of living and
working. It featured three days of groundbreaking discussion and pure indulgence – from Wales’ first National Laughter Day to Face Yoga and Nordic Walking! I Am What I Am and That Needs No Excuses by Dr Sohère Roked, the Holistic Doctor - Food, You and Happiness by Lotty Sykes of the Celtic Spring Hospital and Kim Lyddon’s Get Into The Groove, The Confidence Zone—the opportunity for pure indulgence in the hotel Spa, experienced the benefits of the latest wellness products throughout the weekend. Kangen is a Japanese word, best translated into English as "Return To Original" which means several things when used to describe water. Kangen Water was on hand to demonstrate the most powerful water in existence! The event was in aid of the Ty Pili Pala Butterfly House charity, for women affected by gynaecological cancers. St David's Hotel & Spa is Cardiff’s only five star hotel, and the inspirational venue for the Art of Wellbeing event. The hotel also knows a thing or two about tea, with daily Afternoon Tea served between 3pm and 5pm, featuring a delicious selection of finger sandwiches, seasonal cakes and home baked scones, all served on vintage, mismatching china in a nostalgic nod to days gone by.

Twining’s story started in 1706, when the most popular drinks in England were coffee, gin and ale even at breakfast! Although tea had been drunk in China for thousands of years, it had only just been imported to England, and lots of people were suspicious of it.

MIND BODY AND SPIRIT
Welsh links. My name is Reverend Professor Teddy Kalongo from Zambia and I am an ordained Minister of the United Church of Zambia - now transferred to the British Methodist Church. The British Methodist Church has had a long relationship with Zambia, supporting mission there both before and after the formation of the United Church of Zambia. For instance, many years ago, missionaries took the Good News to Zambia and new churches were born in our country and the church is growing rapidly. Five years ago, my family and I arrived in Penarth, Wales to take up a five-year appointment as the Presbyter of Trinity Methodist Church in Penarth. Since then my appointment has been extended for another term and my pastoral responsibilities now include not only Trinity Methodist Church but also Albert Road and Eastbrook Churches in the Vale of Glamorgan Methodist Circuit. I am already working with the Vale of Glamorgan Methodist Circuit to explore ways of involving more young people in church life. I also share my personal experience of the church and culture in Zambia with the people here. Because of this exchange, relationships between Wales and Zambia are being strengthened. For example, I have taken several groups of young people and adults to Zambia since 2007. These trips include among other things
evangelism, education, cultural experience and some sight-seeing. I am a Volunteer with the Miss Moo La La Campaign for Butterfly House as a cancer charity in order to help bring about awareness in our communities in Wales about cancer and also establish links with Zambia in the same area. Zambia is not unique in its battle against cancer. Like other countries in the developing world, the reality in Zambia is one of overstretched health systems, where few cancer patients get screened, diagnosis comes too late or treatment is just not available. As though this was not enough, most of Zambia's oncologists and radiotherapists have left the country to seek employment elsewhere because of the lack of facilities, funding and training. My hope is that this link with Zambia will bring hope and the chance of survival to many a Zambian cancer patient who previously had none. We hope to see greatly improved people's access to quality cancer diagnosis, treatment and training. I am married to Emelia, a school teacher and we have been blessed with four boys: Teddy jr, Lambert, Ongani and Rhys. Equally, there is much for my family and for me to learn here too. My children are already studying Welsh at school and now treat us to delicious Welsh soup from time to time. We even have a new son with a good Welsh name, Rhys.

due to the common bond of having experienced a diagnosis of cancer.
A diagnosis of cancer can bring with it a range of emotional and psychological issues as well as the physical consequences of the disease.
We felt that this was such an effective and special way of supporting people that we applied for funding to the Big Lottery to roll the choirs out all over Wales and were successful in securing nearly £1m over the next 3 years as part of a project called Sing With Us.
Research has shown that people with a range of medical conditions who take part in organised singing groups feel an increased sense of connection to their community and to each other, and also have enhanced coping skills, quality of life and all round emotional wellbeing. Therefore, at the start of 2010 we set up our first choir for people affected by cancer and commissioned researchers from Cardiff University’s School of Healthcare Science to carry out an evaluation that looked at a range of health and wellbeing measures to ascertain whether this could act as an effective alternative support group. In just three months we were able to significant improvements in vitality, social function and overall mental health within the group, and also a reduction of bodily pain. The members of the choir felt that it provided a focus and shared goal, improved self-esteem and confidence provided additional support and friendship
Today we have 4 Sing With Us choirs in Cardiff, Swansea, Cwmbran and Carmarthen with even more choirs being set up in the new year. If you live in Wales, have been affected by cancer and would like to join a Sing With Us Choir please contact singwithus@tenovus.org.uk or ring 0808 8081010.

LAUNCHING A WELSH NATIONAL LAUGHTER DAY
WELSH NATIONAL LAUGHTER DAY
LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE: Every day can be a day with laughter. But for some of us, joyful laughter may seem absent from our lives. The Art of Wellbeing wants to change all that! In October 2012, The Art of Wellbeing Show, working with Laughter guru Robin Graham, launched the Welsh National Laughter Day. Laughter Guru Robin Graham launches Wales’ First National Laughter Day.
This day was not about humour and comedy, but about laughter itself. It highlighted the health and social benefits of laughter, give tips on how we can use it to help us in our lives, and launch activities for health and happiness with laughter throughout Wales. “Laughter is a mood altering substance which is legal and free,” says Robin. “We can laugh ourselves happier, healthier, less stressed, more sociable, and build stronger communities.” Scientific research from the past 40 years shows that laughter improves our immune system, helps our blood circulation and lowers resting blood pressure, can improve respiration, lowers our stress hormones, helps people with cancer, is good in anger management, tackles depression,

breaks down social barriers, and does much more. It is a major tool for wellbeing and health and our communities. Kit Hammond-Stapely is a laughter ambassador. In 1998, she defied both her doctors and a disastrous life situation by embracing laughter and deciding to not die of aggressive “incurable” cancer. Today, happily cancer-free, she says, “Laughter is Nature’s natural stress buster. As a general rule, toxic stress is anything we can’t laugh about.” The vision is to grow the Welsh National Laughter Day every year, creating a network of people who share and inspire joyful laughter. In 2013, it will be part of the UK National Laughter Festival, which takes place during National Carers Week, and will have a particular focus of older people, offices, and communities. Nicki Page, Managing Director of the Art of Wellbeing says:
“I'm delighted that we have secured the first workshop national laughter day as part of the art of wellbeing. It's I reckon the best medicine - and it's free. This is certainly a laughing matter!”

If you would like to know more about how Kim can help you achieve the success you want in your life you can contact her either by email at:
After many years travelling around the world she has returned to a hobby and passion she had when she was young, dog training. So, not only is she a human trainer she is also a qualified dog trainer. In her spare time she loves spending time with her Border Collie, Tyler. Teaching him new
moves and skills. She also runs a dog training classes where she helps pet owners train their own dogs. Her dog passion has taking her into the world of competition where she competes with Tyler in Heelwork to Music or what’s also known as dog dancing and obedience. Kim credits the bringing together of these two passions to her great friend Pauline. One day they were sat in a Costa Coffee shop chatting about work and life in general when Pauline said “Why don’t you use your business knowledge and expertise to help dog business owners?” It was one of those light bulb moments. It hadn’t occurred to Kim to combine her personal and business interests. They were just two different aspects of Kim’s life, but, in that moment it just made sense.

WATER IS AN ENIGMA TO MANY Everyone knows they need it, but they don’t seem to know why or in what form. How many times have you heard someone say “Water is water!” Maybe you have said it yourself? Water out of the tap is not the same as bottled water. Water flowing down a stream from a glacier is different from the River Thames water. Everglades swamp water differs greatly from that in Lake Windermere. You get the picture? At the end of the day, we have difficulty discerning the quality, structure and properties of the water we drink and never think to its purity, hydrating effectiveness, mineral content or electrical characteristics. I mean what’s that? Nor do we seem to know why these elemental attributes are important. Book after book, study after study, and paper after paper have been produced about water. The Internet is a virtual library on water. Most of us know that the body is about 70% water, we should drink eight glasses a day, humans can go for weeks without food but only three to four days without water, etc., etc. What we don’t know – or fail to realize – is that most water is acidic, much of it is “dead” Reverse Osmosis (RO) water (no minerals). In fact, tap water is full of poisons (chlorine and fluoride), it struggles to hydrate our cells, and contains oxidants rather than antioxidants. That’s the technical jargon—let’s break it down. It is common knowledge of the importance of the acid/alkaline problem with cancer patients. Most humans
are acid, which
promotes
disease.
Remember the pH scale? The letters pH stand for “potential of hydrogen” or “per hydrogen” which just equates to the amount of hydrogen atoms (H+ acidic) and/or hydroxide ions (OH- alkaline) within a substance. So a pH of 8 would mean many times more hydroxide atoms (alkaline) than a pH of 6 (actually, 100 times more). This is important for two reasons. First of all, water with a pH of 8 would have a tendency to alkalinize us while that
of 6 would acidify our bodies. Secondly, hydrogen is essential to fuel us and to heal us. So with all this knowledge how can Kangen Water help us improve the quality of our wellbeing? The Enagic technology was developed 37 years ago in the Hospitals in Japan for the treatment of disease. It is the only technology of its kind

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH
took walks of at least 20 minutes “less than once a year or never” in GB.
THE HOLISTIC VIEW
Dr Sohère Roked The state of health in the developed world is in crisis. People are living longer but in poorer health. Obesity, diabetes, strokes and heart attacks are at epidemic proportions. Health services are struggling to cope and in some areas are at breaking point. As an NHS GP I have seen this for myself. As the UK’s leading holistic Doctor, I am passionate about the need for people to take back control for their own health, instead of relying on medical professionals and prescription drugs. There is an increase in disease, caused in no small part by lifestyle choices made by the population. In England, just over a quarter of adults were classified as obese in 2010. Did you know in 2010, 41% of a surveyed population said they made walks of 20 minutes or more at least 3 times a week and an additional 23% said they did so at least once or twice a week in Great Britain (GB). However, 20% of respondents reported that they
There has been a significant upward trend in household expenditure on eggs, butter, beverages, sugar and preserves in the UK in 2010. Also 25% of men and 27% of women consumed the recommended five or more portions of fruit and vegetables daily. As an example, US doctor Dean Ornish has created a program that is widely used in The States that has been proven to reverse heart disease and prostate cancer. His program consists of a very low fat vegetarian diet, exercise and yoga, relaxation and a support group. My passion is to empower individuals to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing by seeing themselves as a 'whole' and wherever possible, using natural healthcare that works in synergy with the body. My aim is to encourage prevention of 'dis-ease' and regeneration of health and wellbeing, so that the individual can revitalise their health and be the best that they can be. I believe that good health does not have to be complicated, but does involve the full participation of the individual to take control and revitalise their own health and wellbeing. I offer bespoke health and wellbeing consultations that focus on what really matters to you, and goes in to depth to solve your health care issues and restore you back to wellbeing. www.holistic-doctor.co.uk

How do I know this? Because during Enneagram workshops I have observed how I react in stressful situations and I have seen and heard others describe what it is like to be a type Six. This is the essence of the narrative tradition: self observation and listening to others tell their stories.

SLEEP WALES
Amy McClelland (Msc, BSc, BAHyp)
The Cardiff sleep clinic is the only one of its kind in South Wales and aims to provide services to people in Wales and beyond. In the clinic, sleep management and is provided by doctors and psychologists specialising in sleep conditions. Conditions that we deal with on a regular basis include:
Restless Leg Syndrome
Sleepwalking
Narcolepsy
Acting Out dreams
Insomnia
Sleep Anxiety
The centre on Cathedral Rd, aims to use both medical and psychological expertise to tackle sleep problemswhich can often have a knock on effect on physical and mental health. Dr Dev Banerjee, who is setting up the clinic with psychologist Amy McClelland, says: “Sleep issues have historically been treated with medication and with very little psychological support. Many
patients with sleep problems need more than this.” Ms McClelland says: “The future of treating sleep problems lies in the integrated approachmedical doctors working closely with sleep-trained psychology practitioners and counsellors, offering a place for people to go where they feel that their particular sleep problem is truly understood. Also, it is not only isolated individuals who need help with sleep but, with increases in work-related stress, we also need to provide support to the British workforce. We need good sleep services for individuals and organisations alike. The main message is that the NHS have very limited sleep services especially for people with insomnia. Sleep Wales fills that gap and provides tired people with somewhere to go and somewhere where their sleep problem will be taken seriously.”

MINDFULNESS IN ACTION
MEDITATION & WELLBEING
Mindfulness meditation is an ancient Buddhist practice of learning to be more fully aware in the present moment. In the form of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction it is now attracting huge interest as a secular intervention to support physical and mental health, increasing wellbeing and satisfaction. The heart of the programme is a series of simple meditation practices that cultivate the faculty of mindfulness: the capacity to be calmly aware of what is happening in the present moment without judging or reacting. Mindfulness works. The American National Institute of Health has made mindfulness a priority area and is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into research. As the results come in they are showing that mindfulness can help with everything from stress and depression to heart and respiratory conditions and pain management. What's more, organisations from Google to the Cabinet Office have been running mindfulness courses as core elements of their strategies for enhancing wellbeing, effectiveness and creativity at work. The media buzz around mindfulness includes major recent pieces in Time Magazine and The Financial Times.
Mindfulness in Action is a Cardiffbased mindfulness training business led by Vishvapani Blomfield. He learned meditation when he became a Buddhist as a teenager. Three decades on, he's an engaging speaker, who broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day, a respected writer and an experienced mindfulness trainer. Mindfulness in Action teaches eight-week mindfulness courses in Cardiff and Bristol as well as 1-to-1 coaching in Cardiff and mindfulness training for organisations across the region. Our next event is an early evening Mindfulness and Wellbeing Course at the Cardiff Buddhist Centre in Roath, running 6.00-7.30 for eight Monday evenings from October 22. If you would like to discuss what we offer or explore how mindfulness might help your organisation please contact us at info@mindfulnessinaction.co.uk.

MUD MUD GLORIOUS MUD!
THE JURASSIC MUD STORY
The massage therapist running very late for his client one fateful, in the spa onboard a cruise ship, sailing from Southampton to the med. While the irate customer demanded not to be kept waiting any longer the only solution was a concoction of mud herbs and oils, prepared with water in a foot soak. The, following morning the guest, Cheryl, was waiting at the spa to announce she’d slept the best sleep without pain in her hip or her knees for the first time in years! She demanded another mud soak, then another the following day until by the end of the cruise she was accompanied by 27 people sitting, soaking and proudly sleeping better, walking longer without pain, standing longer and going up and down stairs easier. Aogan O’ Hare formed Jurassic Mud as the single closest substance to mother nature’s original recipe – all of the minerals, trace minerals & trace elements together in one magnificent serving. The very same recipe that our bodies were built upon. The simple sit – soak – stand - system is now in its 5th year as more and more people are discovering how easily turning back the clock on their bones and joints really is. The following cruise, 57 people
took part and those who walked after soaking making the most remarkable improvements. 108 people then took part the cruise after that with word of the miraculous mud soak spreading like wildfire week after week he was going from ship to ship showing other staff how to use it. After a few years for the sake of keeping the mud foot soak concept true to the way it started, he decided to step off the ships and bring this incredible opportunity to a wider audience. Much studying, lab testing and travelling around the world brought some incredible insights into how it worked at a cellular level. After soaking, return a little of the incredible recipe to mother earth herself by treating your plants or flowers with some. They’ll quickly show you how grateful they are.

Having recently retired from the BBC and with time on his hands Richard decided to set up a bespoke dog walking and pet sitting service for Penarth and the surrounding area. We give all new clients a free half an hour meeting in their home, to find out the pets likes and dislikes on a walk, where they liked to be walked on a daily basis, also to go over any other needs for the client or dog. We only walk dogs on the lead and within there own locality, in area they know and are used to, and there is no pack walking, unless the dogs are a family group.
