Reviving a Floating Shelter L3 Studio Spring’22

Process The process started with investigating the key thrust behind the project. Initially the fascination with Arabian sea became the triggering point for several sketches. 1. Initial Exploration The initial exploration shows an environment filled with different scenarios and activities. The ambition was to create a spectacle for the city.

2. Development of Long Section The development of these ideas were taken forward in a very literal sense. Therefore certain abstract qualities and essence of the ideas were compromised.

Process

1. Elevation sketch The elevation looks at the idea of limitlessness in an elevation. The result is a twisted folded plate structure which seemingly never ends.

After some introspection, the horizon became the key inspiration. Its essence like seamless, boundary-less, hazy, limitless and distortion were converted into spatial scenarios.

The form and light were explored to create a distorted frame of view.

The render shows the relationship between waves and the deconstructed metallic roof.

The sketch introduces various strategies like dynamic roof, folded membrane, angular circulation and juxtaposition of floor plates.

View from the city The intervention is placed alongside the gateway of India. It creates a spectacle, leading to formation of a sea mark. An idea inspired by various landmarks.



Front Elevation Elevation shows the intervention placed with supporting pontoons. The parametric form creates a relationship with the mighty waves of Arabian sea.

Roof Plan Roof plan shows the pathway created on top for experiencing the roof, horizon and the city. Pontoons, spud barges, crane and kitchen barge facilitate the construction of Louise Catherine.


First Floor LVL Plan The plan is characterized by its separation between served and servant spaces. The doubly skin exterior made of aluminum acts as a holder of various services. It also provided thermal insulation to the interior. The floor plates and circulation complements the form of the roof.




Long section during barge under construction The dynamic roof and the hanging floor plates create multiple programmatic possibilities. Section also shows the Louise Catherine getting constructed.

Deck LVL Plan It shows the arrangement required for facilitating the construction of Louise Catherine.



Exploded Axonometric The axonometric shows the various facets that make up the built form. A tubular mesh created to support the metal plates which is further triangulated to resist the torsional forces. The circulation is articulated to create occasional pause and movement with the sea.

Kitchen Barge

Short Section A Section shows the floor pates and the shed housing the construction activity.

3. Short Section B The hanging floor plate is connected to the ramp which squishes one in the shed and is release on top.


1. Elevation The kitchen is envisioned in a language which complements the built form.

2. Ground Floor Plan The kitchen is placed in the center to increase the viewing deck.

3. First Floor Plan The circulation is carried out along side the kitchen. An additional lounge space is provided on top.



Short Section A (Event) It is imagined that the dry dock will cater to the needs of hindi film industry. By providing spaces to shoot, host screenings and events. Intention is also to make a public space where the glamour of mumbai is showcased to common people.

Short Section B (Event) The hanging floor plate here is catering to a fashion show. The shed helps in facilitationg various functions by taking care of the services in it.



Barge Sections Barge facilitates various events around Hindi film industry, including exhibition and audio visual experiences. The roof is modulated to support various services and to bring in light.

Plan of Barge The barge houses spaces for eating, cooking, exhibition, audio visual scenarios and events.
