The course will explore ideas and influences within contemporary art practice and take these as the starting point for an integrated approach to fine art practice and learning. The work of art is primary to the course. Ideas and issues discussed will relate directly to work seen during visits to The New Art Gallery Walsall and Ikon.
Introduction A SHORT COURSE FOR ARTIST TEACHERS Contemporary fine art practice is made up of a dazzling array of activities. It embraces a diversity of philosophical, sociological and cultural influences, engages with a wide range of issues, and adopts and adapts an often bewildering range of materials, techniques and forms. The Artist Teacher Scheme was established in 1999 and is a rapidly expanding national programme of continuing professional development courses for teachers of art and design. The central aim of the scheme is to enable participating artist teachers to extend their awareness of the richness and complexity of contemporary fine art practice, and the diversity of thinking and influences which inform it. The course will be delivered by artists and theoreticians who relate closely to
developments within contemporary fine art through their own practice. The course is intended for artist teachers working, or aspiring to work, in primary, secondary, further and higher education, and is designed to meet a range of expectations and requirements. It is not essential that participants are currently engaged in personal art practice. The course can be seen as: • A series of related events that can be 'dipped into' • An independent, free-standing accredited course • An access course for possible future study on the arts based Master’s programme at Birmingham City University and for the MA Art and Education and MA Art Practice and Education also offered at Birmingham City University.

COURSE STRUCTURE The course is divided into two main stages of activity: STAGE ONE: ENTRY LEVEL SUMMER SCHOOL 27-31 JULY 2009 Stage one begins with an intensive five-day course delivered at Birmingham City University School of Art, Margaret Street, Birmingham and The New Art Gallery Walsall, and consists of: • Studio practice sessions in which participants will make new work • Seminars exploring different aspects of contemporary art such as modernism and post-modernism, critical theory, cross-cultural influences, the politics of gender and sexuality, and the impact of new technologies on art practice • Guided visits to galleries, including The New Art Gallery Walsall, where participants will be able to go behind the scenes of the latest exhibition. The course is delivered by academic staff who are all practising artists and theorists at Birmingham City University's Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, including Mona Casey, Keir Williams and David Cheeseman. Stage one can be undertaken as a self-contained period of study with recognition by Birmingham City University or it can form the introductory component of a course that will extend over a further eight sessions to be accredited by the University. This can count as part of the Certificate stage of the MA in Art and Education and MA Art Practice and Education or as an introduction to study on the MA Fine Art course. (MA courses can be studied part-time over two years.) STAGE TWO: INTERMEDIATE LEVEL SATURDAY SCHOOLS SEPTEMBER 2009 TO JUNE 2010 Eight full-day Saturday workshops will take place between September and June and will focus on developing a body of new work. They are led by senior and visiting lecturers from Birmingham City University School of Art, together with experts from The New Art Gallery Walsall and the Ikon gallery. These workshops will include: • The development of a range of practical skills • Discussion, guidance and critiques of individuals' practice • A guided visit to a regional gallery. This course culminates with students submitting work for selection in an exhibition of work at The New Art Gallery Walsall, where participants will work with gallery experts to curate a show of selected work which will open to the public in August 2010.

Information LOCATION The course will be based at Birmingham City University, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, School of Art, Margaret Street, in central Birmingham. Designated studio space will be set aside for the course. There will be access to workshop facilities. The New Art Gallery Walsall and Ikon are other course venues with access to educational facilities and the galleries.

Taken together the Summer School and Saturday Schools can form an introduction to study on the MA Art Practice and Education and can count towards the Certificate stage of an MA Art Practice and Education.
MA LEVEL Birmingham Institute of Art and Design Birmingham City University MA Art Practice and Education Two years part-time From September 2009 MA Art Practice and Education is a two year part-time course. It consists of three stages: PG Certificate, PG Diploma, Master’s. Each contains modules totalling 60 credits. Students are assessed at the end of each of these stages. Students who have successfully completed the Artist Teacher Scheme stage 1 and 2 will gain 48 credits towards the PG Certificate stage. Throughout the three stages they will be supported by seminar lectures from invited professional artists and contemporary cultural theorists, by personal and group tutorials directed by Fine Art lecturers, and by specific seminar modules in contemporary and historical theoretical concerns of art education. Course fees for MA Art Practice and Education are generously subsidised by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) as part of its Postgraduate Professional Development Fund and are available to teachers with Qualified Teacher Status working in maintained schools in England.
