The New Art Gallery Walsall is an internationally famous world class gallery in your region. A 21st century building housing a modern and contemporary permanent art collection over 2 floors, a temporary exhibition programme over a further 2 floors, an interactive gallery, Art Library and roof terrace overlooking the regeneration and developments in Walsall. Do you feel like an alien in an art gallery? Come along and meet our arty alien, find out how he feels, what he eats, about the patterns on his skin. You can make some alien antennae for yourself, hear a story and make a badge.
— Primary KS1 to KS2 — What is Sculpture?
Pupils look, draw, explore and develop understanding about sculpture and materials. Then create individual sculptures with mod roc. This workshop links well with work on portraits.
Learning to Print
Pupils explore, discuss, draw and then learn printmaking techniques inspired by the collection. This workshop links well with work on exploring architecture, landscapes, animals or still life. The subject content is your choice.

Your chance to exhibit
The gallery is 10 years old in 2010, we are inviting pupils to make an original birthday card and send it to the gallery. Selected entries will be put on display. Suitable for reception to FE colleges.
See the Pot Luck exhibition by artists that use food to make their art. Measure out materials and make your own coloured dough and use it to model your own sculpture. Suitable for Reception to KS2 Available: 1 June 2009 to Friday 17 July 2009

Special Needs Schools and Colleges
Any of the workshops and talks detailed under primary and secondary schools can be booked for special needs groups. Contact us to discuss how we can meet the needs of your group. We can run talks that include touching the artworks and audio description. We use picture cards to aid explanations in practical workshops giving step by step instructions.

Teachers - Continuous Professional Development
The gallery offers skill development and discussion sessions to inspire and use artwork in cross curricular study and classroom practice. These sessions help you gain confidence in art skills and using an art gallery with your group. A session can last anything up to 4 hours depending on your availability, and be weekday, weekend or twilight. Sessions can be booked at your convenience, minimum numbers apply. Art Library Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 5pm The Art Library reference is full of resources to accompany the gallery’s collections and exhibitions programme. Please telephone in advance if you intend a whole class to use the library. A librarian can offer group introductions, informal talks about the library and support student research. Books – a wide range including about art movements, architecture, exhibitions at the gallery and collection catalogues. Children’s books – for younger readers to be introduced to shape and colour and introduce famous artists and read stories. Internet access – the are several computers for art research Contemporary Journals – monthly journals are in the library as well as growing collections of DVDs and CD-ROMs. Archives – we hold many documents, photographs and audio visual material about the building and the family behind the collections. You can access these by appointment.

Art Cart activities
This is a trolley that has six sets each, of three different activities. Please contact the Education team to find out which activities are on each month, and to book a date for use. Pop into the gallery any weekend to see the Art Cart in use for family groups.
Frisky Bags rucksack trails
Suitable for smaller groups. These are rucksacks full of activities to help you explore the collections. Pupils can work in teams with an adult to discuss or solve each activity.
Discussion cards
These give an image of the artwork and a set of open ended questions to help you discuss the artworks. Two packs available Work and Leisure or Animals and Birds.
Bags for Babes
A series of playbags of textile shapes to recreate a picture on display. Great for the very young.
