Ania Bas blurs the edges of what art is and what it can be. Her work centres on ideas of collaboration and the outcome of her projects vary; from texting via mobile phones and setting up market stalls, to simply just sitting and talking
This Autumn, a selection of West Midlands-based artists will be developing ideas for public art projects in Walsall and West Bromwich. The residency forms part of Longhouse’s annual Professional Artist Development (PAD) programme. The selected artists will be using the Artists’ Studio as a base to explore the local area and share their ideas with each other and local residents.
Ania will continue the art of conversation in Walsall by sharing stories about the gallery with visitors over tea and cake. As part of her residency, she will create unique guided tours which bypass the exhibits and the architecture to highlight the long-standing memories which resonate throughout the building. Food and Art Bobby Baker, Han Bing, Helen Chadwick, Gayle Chong Kwan, Mona Hatoum, Aaron Head, Lia Anna Hennig, Damien Hirst, Anya Gallaccio, Antony Gormley, Subodh Gupta, Anthony Key, Lucy+Jorge Orta, Rainer Prohaska, Manuel Saiz, Jana Sterbak and Karen Tam 22 May — 19 July 2009 Pot Luck brings together 17 internationally acclaimed contemporary artists who explore the continuing relationship between food and art. The exhibition includes photography, sculpture, video and site-specific installations. Pot Luck has been conceived in the mood of an informal ‘pot luck’ dinner where each artist has been invited to bring a ‘dish’ to the table. The eclectic offering includes two life-size Chinese restaurants, a salami raincloud and a bubbling chocolate fountain. This mixture of ingredients invites us to consider the role and significance of food and eating within our daily lives whilst experiencing the current flavour of our social and political climate. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse 7 August — 1 November 2009

Gordon Cheung creates hallucinogenic visions inspired by a wide range of sources including science fiction, the literature of authors like JG Ballard and Philip K Dick, 18th century romantic painting, cartoons and current affairs. Uniquely, he prepares his canvases using a collage of stock listings from the Financial Times which he regards as a metaphor for the data-saturated and wealth-obsessed era in which we live. These compelling works reflect on such contemporary issues as the war on terror, religion, economics, globalisation, the digital age and technology. For this exhibition, the artist will create a brand new body of works including contemporary interpretations of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Goya’s Disasters of War.

Neal Rock
Fanestra & Other Works 7 August — 1 November Neal Rock creates sculptural, materially overloaded objects through the layering of pigmented silicone. Often large in scale, his work for Walsall will incorporate pieces that occupy the central space of the gallery alongside more familiar wall based installations. His choice of material and processes aim to develop and transform a tradition of abstract painting, acknowledging the impact of recent film history and other media.

This, his first major solo exhibition in a UK public gallery, will feature entirely new work. Neal Rock lives and works in Los Angeles, USA.

Jonathan Shaw Crash
10 July — 6 September 2009 Birmingham-based artist Jonathan Shaw has consistently explored the way that light and movement can be represented through the photographic image. He frequently designs, builds and modifies camera equipment to produce unique and compelling interpretations of space and time. For this exhibition, Jonathan will create a large scale panoramic photographic installation that draws the viewer into the claustrophobic and hedonistic world of clubbing. A publication accompanies the exhibition, with an essay by Jean Baird. Supported by Coventry University.

Steffi Klenz Nummianus
11 September — 22 November For this series of works, Steffi has photographed rows of boarded up terraced houses in Greater Manchester. These houses are representative of a more widespread trend in which most residents have left the area, causing a rapid decrease in value for the remaining properties. Unable to sell their homes, some residents are forced to remain in the area where they are subject to a downward spiral of social exclusion. The term “Nummianus” is a direct reference to an inscription found in the remains of a house in Pompeii. Literally translated as coin or money, Klenz makes an ironic reference to homes as commodities and creates a memorial to the loss of a community. Flowers and plants have always been a popular choice for artists and visitors alike. Walsall’s collections contain many examples with contemporary artists using the subject matter to give a more political twist to what is perceived as a traditional subject.
Bob and Roberta Smith & the Epstein Archive September 2009 — May 2011 Bob and Roberta Smith will be working with an Archivist to reveal the previously undocumented and unseen Epstein Archive to our audiences in new and exciting ways. Thousands of letters, books and photographs in the archive will form the starting point. ‘New Ways of Collaborating’ will explore how history and contemporary art can come together to stimulate new meanings and connections for people. Bob and Roberta Smith’s work will be on display in the archive room in the Garman Ryan Collection from July onwards.
This exhibition carefully selects artists who have been preoccupied with gardening and nature and our ‘taming’ of it. Their attraction to the sheer beauty of flowers and the natural world comes through in the extraordinary riots of colour and form expressed in many different mediums from the virtuoso Victorian painting of Primulas by Edith Elliot to the quiet understated stillness of Dod Proctors spring flowers.

The Garman Ryan Collection On display all year round The Garman Ryan Collection is a personal collection of art and artefacts given to Walsall by Sir Jacob Epstein’s widow, Kathleen Garman and her close friend, sculptor, Sally Ryan. This intimate display includes works by many famous artists including Van Gogh, Lucian Freud, Monet, Constable and Picasso.
