the Dragon bracelet “Carrera y Carrera” gets inspired

Madrid, Spain- Strength, personality and good luck are some of the words that describe this magnificent piece inspired by the Dragon, a symbol of strength and power, like the woman that will wear this spectacular jewel. Carrera y Carrera invites you to discover the Dragon Bracelet – a piece belonging to one of the firm’s

Faberge’s New Modern Design Venice, Italy- Beautiful Faberge jewelry adorned the neck of famous actress Kate Hudson during the premiere of the film “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” at the Venice Film Festival last August. The items were one of a kind pieces of jewelry from the world famous brand that began in 1842 in St. Petersburg, Imperial Russia by Gustav Faberge. After so many years, the company has evolved into one of the most prestigious jewelry lines in the world, gracing the Red Carpet of major events in Europe and the United States. The company which moved in 1924 to Paris, became recognized because of their fragrances in the 60’s onward, but it was in the year 2009, that the brand had a total makeover, emphasizing its glamorous history that started with the ornate eggs commissioned by the Russian Tsars and has since grown into beautiful one of a kind pieces of jewelry. The pieces worn here by Hudson consist of an 18 carat yellow gold and silver and features 871 white diamonds totaling 15.58 carats. The charmeuse blanche ring is set in 18 carat gold and silver and features 641 white diamonds totaling 10.50 carats. More than 150 hours of work are behind this piece of art where the characteristic Carrera y Carrera matte-shine effect on gold can be fully appreciated. A jewel made entirely by hand, it is an example of great craftsmanship by the company’s master jewelers, whose savoir-faire is reflected in the complex and original mounting of the piece. Perfectly defined and sculpted scales show in detail the length of the body of this mythological animal, bringing movement and life to this mini-sculpture. A sculptural jewel of immense impact, with a weight in precious yellow gold of over 110 grams; 422 brown diamonds with a weight of 3.78 carats; and four white diamonds, one in each eye, totaling 0.16 carats – diamonds that bring tremendous realism and emotion to this superb piece. immel London girl Georgia May Jagger visited the Rimmel Ashford factory to discover the secrets behind the manufacturing of Rimmel products. Georgia started her day by taking a tour of the production lines where she discovered how some of her favourite Rimmel products, like Scandaleyes Mascara, Match Perfection Foundation and Moisture Renew Lipstick, just to name a few, are made. Georgia even got to try her hand at making and assembling products as she helped staff mix pigments for lipsticks and top off mascaras with caps. Always one for a challenge, Georgia was then led to the R&D labs in the factory where she sat down with R&D Vice President Alan Farer to make her very own Match Perfection shade. Like a true pro, Georgia mixed ingredients, and worked away in the lab to create her shade and discover the fascinating and complex process and technology behind the Match Perfection foundation. She even got a special sneak peak at the new formula being released later this year. In the afternoon Georgia then greeted journalists for an afternoon press event at the Rimmel Ashford factory. Journalists were given an

FROM P FASHION MODEL TO HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST Pia-Maria Norris traveled the world in search for inspiration and inner harmony By Rebeca Herrero new york

ia-Maria Norris arrives at the restaurant smiling. She has that morning glow that exudes happiness, and positive energy. Her secret? The meditation practice of Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong. From being an international fashion model since she was 19 years old, Pia-Maria assumed that beauty was going to be a constant dynamic in her life. After years of working in the modeling industry, she realized her life needed a little boost, and upon discovering the impact that this Chinese practice had on her she focused in studying it diligently. At a young age, while being raised in a faraway country like Finland, Pia-Maria had the incessant curiosity for all things Chinese. She visited African countries with her parents, explored the world beyond the Nordic oceans, and craved the warmth of tropical countries. But she found in Asia what caught her attention the most, a spiritual practice that changed her life forever. “My life has been an interesting journey, and beauty seems to have been at the epicenter of all my routines”, and indeed, beauty has imbued Pia-Maria all her life. After graduating from college with a marketing degree at age 19 she moved to Paris, where she began her modeling career. Her wide smile and perfect teeth got her modeling gigs around the world, making her an accessible and beautiful presence on advertising campaigns throughout the world. “Modeling was a great experience that enabled me to travel the world for years. Consequently I became familiar with many different cultures and people. But the modeling world is a world that can also be tough; you oftentimes feel a little empty. Everything depends on your looks, and that can be hard on a young woman”, says Pia-Maria, who has spent half her life living in nine countries. She also speaks five languages. Svelte, blonde and with perfect Finnish features, Pia-Maria landed a TV gig in South America. “For four years I was doing television, I really liked it, but it got to a point where I needed some privacy. At the end it became a bit overwhelming always being in the public eye”.

“My life has been an interesting journey, and beauty seems to have been at the epicenter of all my routines”

International Spokesperson

After a while, Pia-Maria moved back to Europe. “I became the international spokesperson and director of PR for Isadora, one of the leading cosmetic companies in Europe. I loved working with them since they empower women. I trained people all over the world and it taught me a great corporate sense 20 ART BODEGA

Cover Story while still being surrounded by beauty”. During one of her travels Pia-Maria met her husband, financier and philanthropist, Stephen Norris, also co-founder of the Carlyle Group. They met in New York, and a few years later

“The effect of doing the slow-moving exercises and sitting meditation of Falun Gong were immediate, and quite astonishing,” says Pia-Maria. married. Now both contribute many hours to charities around the world. One of Pia-Maria’s main causes is the human rights plight of Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong), which is an ancient spiritual meditation practice that PiaMaria has practiced for the past 13 years.

Something More

“One day, I was attending a karate class, and I saw this teacher meditating. He looked so peaceful. After inquiring, he introduced me to the practice of Falun Gong. It is really quite wonderful. My life completely changed after I started practicing Falun Gong”, says Pia-Maria. Falun Gong is an ancient Chinese spiritual discipline that consists of meditation, four gentle exercises and teachings that guide one to incorporate the values of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance into one’s daily life. “The effect of doing the slow-moving exercises and sitting meditation of Falun Gong were immediate, and quite astonishing,” says Pia-Maria. “They bring me a level of energy and tranquility that is hard to describe. It makes me feel young, strong and also gives me an inner peace unlike anything I have ever experienced before.” Indeed, with Falun Gong now practiced in over 100 countries worldwide by an estimated 100 million people, reports of health and energy improvements abound. “Better sleep, less stress, increased energy, better digestion, glowing and beautiful skin,” says Pia-Maria. “The list goes on and on…I even find my emo22 ART BODEGA

tional state much more calm, focused and balanced.” The central component of Falun Gong is its teachings, which complement the four gentle exercises and meditation. Many say it is the teachings, in fact, that form the core of the practice and that differentiate Falun Gong. “I feel it’s the blend of virtuous living, of aligning one’s life with higher principles, and powerful exercises that makes it such a winning combination”, says Pia-Maria. The art of self-healing and the pursuit of longevity have been hallowed traditions in Eastern cultures for millennia, and after being passed down for thousands of years in China, Falun Gong was first made public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi. The practice quickly spread, largely through word-of-mouth, throughout China. Its primary text, Zhuan Falun, appeared on China’s best seller lists, and by 1999 Falun Gong had already grown to become the largest and fastest growing practice of the sort in Chinese, if not world, history, with as many as 100 million people practicing throughout China. Tragically, It was this same popularity that caused a dramatic and violent change in political winds in July 1999, when a few leaders of the Chinese communist regime declared Falun Gong a ‘threat’, and began a violent campaign to eradicate it, despite having praised it for years for all its benefits.

Human Rights Defender

“First the Chinese government lauded the practice for its many health benefits, but in 1999, when they discovered that over 100 million people were practicing it, the Chinese Communist government turned on it and launched a severe persecutory campaign that has lasted until today, drawing strong criticism and condemnation from the international community”, Pia-Maria explains. The deeper reason though, can be attributed to historical reasons. China was once known as “the Celestial Empire”, and its people have always believed its culture to

be divinely inspired, and the idea of aligning oneself to a higher principle has permeated Chinese life and culture for thousands of years: - from Confucian ideals, to Taoist and Buddhist schools of thought and meditation disciplines. “So when the Chinese Communist government, which has systematically tried to destroy China’s traditional and spiritual culture since it came to power in 1949, saw the immense popularity of Falun Gong rise, it also naturally became a target for this systematic destruction since Falun Gong represents the true values and very essences of the traditional Chinese culture”, Pia-Maria explains. The crackdown and persecution continues today, and to-date millions have been abducted, tens of thousands tortured and thousands killed. The persecution of Falun Gong has been sharply condemned by human rights groups and governments across the world such as Amnesty International, the United Nations, the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament. “I’ve spent a great deal of my spare time doing whatever I can,” says Pia-Maria. “It’s a horrific injustice and one can’t just stand aside and let it happen.”

THE FALUN DAFA EXERCISES AND MEDITATION

1 “Buddha Showing a Thousand Hands” This exercise is done standing, and consists of gentle stretching movements. The objective of this exercise is to open up all the energy channels in the body. It is done three times after each other, and it is done before the other ones as it prepares the body for the other exercises, Pia-Maria explains.

2 “Falun Standing Stance” Comprised of four static postures that can be held for several minutes each, the second exercise enhances one’s energy level and awakens wisdom.

3 “Penetrating the Two Cosmic Extremes” With its gentle hand-gliding movements this exercise purifies the body using energy from the cosmos. This one is also done standing, and is done three times after each other. It consists of a series of movements that grants a true cleansing of energy in the body.

4 “Falun Heavenly Circulation” By gently tracing the hands over the entire body, front and back, the fourth exercise rectifies all abnormal conditions in the body and circulates energy widely.

Looking Towards the Future

In looking forward, Pia-Maria has a welldefined goal ahead of her. “I believe we live in defining times, and that the world needs a big measure of kindness and integrity.” This, says Pia-Maria, is why she remains so dedicated to the plight of Falun Gong. “China has become a focal point of the international community, and Falun Gong is the key issue in China,” says Pia-Maria. “What unfolds there will literally have ripple affects worldwide, and so this is one of the most worthy causes I can think of.” As a six-foot tall blonde from Finland, Pia-Maria certainly does not strike one as a defender of Chinese human rights, but she could very well represent the future of what China and the world could look like. “Honesty, compassion, tolerance for others,” says Pia-Maria. “That’s what my life is all about now, and I feel these principles hold the key to a wonderful future not only for China but for us all”, concludes the lovely Pia-Maria Norris. Flashing the brilliant smile that landed her on magazine covers around the world, it’s hard to argue with her.

We have two little girls, I’m thrilled we don’t have 17," he said during the evening, referring to his stand on contraceptives. Robert Moses, his mentor at Princeton and founder of the organization, introduced him to the audience. The academic is known as one of the most conservative thinkers in the United States, and it is thought to be the greatest proponent of this ideological tendency in the population in recent years. Moses was Cruz’s mentor. The Senator elected by the State of Texas is notable for his talent when debating, and has also argued many cases in the Supreme Court. His vast experience as an attorney has made his colleagues praise him as a prominent public figure in the Republican Party. Cruz also indicated that our economy must grow stronger, that Big Government is not the solution and that politicians must stand to protect the rights of Hispanics and small business owners. “One out of 10 households of the Latino population owns a small business. America was build on this dream, we must empower this population to make it right”, he added.

In recent days, Congress has been active trying to solve the budgets needed to avoid a looming fiscal decline. Meanwhile, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC, a new Hispanic Republican senator appeared before an intimate audience at the American Principles Project Gala, "Red, White and Blue". Ted Cruz, with an impeccable appearance, spoke with great confidence supporting his party, one that has been affected by the last presidential election in which the winner was the president- elect, Barack Obama. Cruz, who is of Cuban descent, born in Canada, was first elected as a senator on November 6, linking its name to a handful of Hispanic senators including two other Cuban-Americans, Robert Menendez (Democrat, New Jersey) and Marcos Rubio (R-Florida) Clearly away from the positions of party candidate Mitt Romney, the Texas Senator stressed that one of the deepest flaws during the last campaign had to do with the commentary Romney made last year, regarding “the other 47%”. When video became viral, Romney lost support. According to Cruz, this definitely affected the Republican Party. During the presentation, he also discussed the issue of immigration, emphasizing that this argument will be one of great importance for the coming years. "We are a party that believes in legal immigration. We also believe that the economy should be strengthened. There is a fervent insistence in letting go of our conservative principles, but we must become tougher and set the message more effectively”, he added. The senator ran against Democrat Paul Sadler, winning by more than 15 points over his opponent. During the Gala, Cruz talked about

az Hernandez is one of the most iconic faces in New York society. She carries with pride her Latin roots, and comes from a large Puerto Rican family in the world of business. Nowadays she is dedicated to a philanthropic life in the arts in New York, she also belongs to several boards of nonprofit organizations and is patron to one of the year’s most exciting parties in the city, the Annual Gala of El Museo del Barrio. It all started with a relentless curiosity for Hernandez to become independent in the United States. ““I think that Puerto Ricans have accomplished so much in this nation. I feel very proud to come from there and have achieved many things in my career that have made me value life in a grand way “says the statuesque woman who wears the best fashion designer creations in NYC. At the museum galas, Hernandez rubs shoulders with some of the most famous people of this metropolis, including Carolina Herrera, Placido Domingo, and Anna Wintour.. “I always loved fashion. When I came to the United States I attended the University of Notre Dame in New Orleans. Then I moved to Washington DC, lived in Rome for a semester studying Italian and art history. When I returned to Puerto Rico my dad wanted me to work in the company, but when I was going to start working at the office, I saw how my father was…I said to myself, I can’t do this. I have to get back to America”, says Hernandez in the comfort of her home in Park Avenue. Thinking she was not going to succeed under her father’s watch, a businessman in Puerto Rico, she opted to seek a future on her own merits. “I decided that since I had graduated, I could start a new degree or work. I decided to go back to school and finish an associate degree at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). I studied fashion merchandising and became a fashion buyer in New York” she reiterates Her career began as a buyer with a fashion house in Manhattan. “I had a spectacular career for 15 years, until I became the president of the company. They had 50 stores worldwide. In 1999 the opportunity arose to direct a “start-up” after the internet boom. I moved to Boston where I recruited several young Harvard graduate students and started www.

The Art of Framing is his Specialty Eli Wilner collects and sells period and replica frames from his collection. His work is regularly commissioned by museums and for the homes of art collectors around the world

A

painting blossoms when you frame it sensitively. This should be Eli Wilner’s mantra in life, as he has dedicated his whole existence to the art of the frame. His gallery, located on the Upper East Side of New York City, is like a small museum of priceless frames, resting atop a brownstone. From there, Wilner shows his clients unique antique frames to die for.

30 WINTER 2013

“I started in the early 1980’s. I would collect frames and store them in my apartment,” says Wilner, who now owns one of the largest antique frame companies in the world. Frames from his collection are now regularly loaned for masterpieces at Christie’s and Sotheby’s. He recently created a replica of the original frame for the historically important painting Washington Crossing the Delaware, based on

period photographs taken by Matthew Brady. The process of recreating this frame took 3 years and a team of 20 artisans. The completed frame now surrounds the painting in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “It was an honor to adorn this great painting,” adds Wilner, who lives between Manhattan and Montauk. Wilner deals in frames from the 17th to the

20th centuries. He has been featured on Martha Stewart several times as one of the most sought-after framers that serious art collectors must work with. “I think a great frame can make the painting more valuable. We recently framed a Picasso that sold at Christie’s, and the final sale price was a record high for any painting sold at auction up to that point.” Wilner’s craftsmen, many of whom are from South America, carve replica frames with incredible precision, and restore frames that are in poor condition. “If you love a frame, we can make an exact replica of it,” comments Wilner. The “sommelier of frames” traces his passion for frames to the moment when his great uncle framed and installed the then 9-year-old Wilner’s artwork next to his Modigliani and Chagall. The memory of this installation later

sparked his awareness of the important role of the frame. Indeed, when he first began his company in 1983, the art world did not generally appreciate period frames as it now does. Period frames have become a must for both museums and private art collections. His love for his frames is so deep in fact, that he hates to sell them. “I own around 3,400 original antique frames, but I really prefer to make copies,” suggests Wilner. His business has expanded too. Now his artisans also create carved doors and furniture. Even in the digital world, Wilner created an application that frames digital photographs. “You can frame your photos with a unique piece of art. The app includes the history of each frame so that it is educatio-

ith its commitment to the arts, Mandarin Oriental, Miami presented a unique exhibition of specially commissioned works by an elite group of eight Miami artists called Guild, to be on display in the hotel lobby at the end of 2012. Serving as a prelude to Art Basel Miami Beach, the exhibition featured more than 20 artworks illustrating portraits, landscapes and still life, all using Chinese ink to celebrate the hotel’s Asian roots. To kick off the exhibition, Mandarin

Guests had the opportunity to peruse the exhibition while Guild artists created works of art around them, from surrealistic scenes on an Oriental fan to more abstract art, all while enjoying live music, delectable coc34 WINTER 2013

Room rates usually start at $359 per night. “Our hotel has long played a role in Miami’s prominent art scene,” said Jorge Gonzalez, General Manager and Vice President of Mandarin Oriental, Miami. “We are delighted to support local artists and look forward to welcoming guests and Miami residents alike to view these specially designed pieces.” Together since 2010 and all native to Miami, the eight artists that comprise Guild joined forces around the principles of originality and craftsmanship. The group believes that their art reflects meaning through creativity and ambiguity, and each one of the artist’s careers is founded on a true love of painting and respect for technique. Guild is creating works for this special exhibition exclusively with Chinese inks, commonly used in fine calligraphy, which is considered one of the highest arts in Chinese culture. The Eden Roc exudes the glamour of the 50’s

E

lizabeth Taylor, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball were among the first visitors to stay in the famous art deco hotel Eden Roc in Miami Beach. Located in the “Millionaire’s Row”, the hotel occupies a property which was extensively renovated only recently. It reflects a general revival of the area. In the Eden Roc, you can stay in a luxurious room, or relax in one of the hotel pools, both remaining incredibly intact after many decades. The hotel’s restaurant, “1500”, is more than delicious. Its celebrity chef Paula Da Silva, a graduate of Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen”, makes extraordinary dishes, such as steak with chocolate sauce and fish au gratin that melts in your mouth. Likewise are the desserts and the service is the best. The original tower was designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus in 1929, who also conceived two famous buildings in New York, Macy’s Department Store and Saks Fifth Avenue. Harold Mufson, the original owner of the Eden Roc, was an original partner of the neigh-

boring hotel, the Fontainebleau, owned by Ben Novack. The legendary feuding between both developers are emblematic of the history of Miami in recent decades. Due to their personal differences, a wall was built by Novack to block Eden Roc from access to direct sunlight. This wall came to be called the “Spite Wall”. The dispute between the two hotels finally ended when the new developers erected a 21-story tower that blocks this wall of “anger”. The hotel is one of the oldest in South Beach, and its recent renovation accurately captures the classical architecturural style that Lapidus inspired. The pool area is very accessible, comfortable and stylish, equally appealing the bars and restaurant, which were chosen by Esquire magazine as one of the year’s best. Do not miss the experience of staying at this unique hotel... it’s fantastic! More info: 4525 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach. www.edenrocmiami.com 1-305531-0000

Autos

In 2013, small cars are in and the big ones still have many fans

very year the popularity for familysized SUVs remains, but the technological advancement in small packages surprises everyone, especially new buyers. In the past South Florida International Auto Show in Miami Beach, where I had the honor of being on the panel of judges, we chose the three best cars in the show: The Ford Fusion Hybrid, Scion Frs and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Also, the Auto Show selected the Honda Accord as the car of the year. Another interesting vehicle and the first time we have seen it is the “Topless in Miami”, which the press selected as the convertible car of 2012.

Small cars

Every day new buyers are going for small cars as their first choice like the Fiat 500 that comes in different models with hard cover or convertible, among other great small cars like the Mini Cooper, Scion iQ, Yaris, Toyota Prius, and the Chevy Spark with amazing ability. Another notable, the Mercedes Benz Smart car, which also comes in a convertible model in the year 2013. Photography by Angelica Willard

The imposing Buick Enclave

Led by the domestic manufacturer GM, Chevy and Cadillac, the Buick comes this 2013 with the model that has given many satisfactions to its customers for some time. There are no major changes in its design and color options. Some changes can be noticed inside the vehicle, with a slight increment in space, new seats and a different dashboard design. The 2013 Buick Enclave General Motors is known as “Lambda” and is shared by vehicles GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse and the threerow seating Tahoe. It also has the 3.6-liter V6 engine, 288 horsepower, 270 pounds of torque, six-speed automatic, and a fuel economy of 17mpg city and 24mpg on highway.

The tiny SMART

The Smart Fortwo is the smallest car for sale and even though the manufacturers were a bit confused over its presence in the streets, it has become one of the “cutest” vehicles that everyone likes to watch, and why not even own one. The little brother of the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG has imposed its brand on its own. With leather seats, convertible or sliding roof, the Fortwo is for anyone’s pleasure and provides security. It includes seven air bags…an entire engineering of marvelous creativity!

Arts & Culture

this ancient tradition has been all but completely destroyed. Today, where can you actually go to discover authentic Chinese culture?

Surprising at is may seem, the answer is not China.

In order to restore and revive Chinese traditional culture, a group of overseas Chinese artists established Shen Yun in New York in 2006. By 2009, Shen Yun had already grown to three full performance troupes and orchestras that tour simultaneously. Today, Shen Yun counts many winners of international dance and vocal competitions among its artists, and the orchestras include many musicians from worldrenowned symphonies and conservatories. After more than 60 years of Communist rule in China, and especially after the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 70s, Chinese traditional culture has been all but completely demolished. However, the deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and piety, cannot be destroyed. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese traditional culture, and by all accounts, they’re succeeding.

5,000-year-old culture. A Shen Yun performance features the world’s finest Chinese dancers as well as a unique orchestra combining traditional Chinese instruments together with a full Western symphony orchestra. Shen Yun has also pioneered a new form of backdrop, filling each performance with a large-scale, animated digital backdrop with which the dancers interact throughout the evening. “Shen Yun is essentially the vanguard of a pro-

found renaissance of traditional Chinese culture, and their performances are providing people with an experience of inspiration, wonderment, and just exquisite beauty that so many people tell me is like nothing they’ve ever seen before,” explains Shen Yun emcee Leeshai Lemish. “I am awe-struck every year as I see these artists perform an entirely new show. I feel incredibly proud to help bring this show to audiences around the world,” continues Lemish, who, along with the emcees of Shen Yun’s

other companies, have presented shows to more than a million people in over 100 cities across 5 continents.

Inspiring audiences around the globe.

“I think I love it so much because it sort of gave me my culture back. As a Chinese person having been raised overseas, it helped me rediscover myself,” says former dancer and promoter Alina Wangj, who was raised in Peru and speaks fluent Spanish as well as English and Chinese. And helping people rediscover themselves culturally, emotionally, and spiritually is at the heart of Shen Yun’s mission. As London Royal Ballet instructor Judy Wiles explains, “The magic in many ways comes through the eyes to the audience. Their eyes are alive and sparkling, full of life.”

Many celebrities have also been touched by the performance.

“It was an extraordinary experience,” Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett told reporters after watching Shen Yun in Sydney. “The level of skill, but also the power of the archetypes and the narratives were startling. And of course it was exquisitely beautiful.” Robert Stromberg, the production designer for the movie Avatar was so inspired by watching the show he says he even got some new ideas for the next Avatar!

The forgotten China

For millennia, China was known as “the Celestial Empire.” Myths and legends throughout history record that the Middle Kingdom was continually guided by celestial beings. But

At the core of Shen Yun performances is classical Chinese dance, an age-old art form complete with its own system of training and movements. Dynasty after dynasty, it was passed down among the people, in imperial palaces, and ancient plays. Thousands of years have refined it into a distinctive dance system embodying traditional aesthetics. Classical Chinese dance is known for its expressiveness. Dancers can vividly depict a wide range of emotions and virtues—righteousness, loyalty, benevolence, and tolerance to name a few. Movements can be masculine or soft, vigorous or graceful, somber or playful. Such range is achieved through a dancer’s perfection of three key aspects: bearing, form, and technique. Bearing refers to the inner spirit and meaning of the dance being brought forth through the dancer’s expressions. In classical Chinese dance, a dancer’s inner world is just as important as the accuracy of his or her movements. Particular attention is paid to synchronizing breath and gestures, making movements appear to emanate directly from the dancer’s soul. Chinese dance’s external form includes hundreds of unique movements and postures. WINTER 2013 61

An accomplished performer makes them appear effortless, but they require immaculate coordination of the entire body that takes years of rigorous training. A dancer’s every cell—from toes to fingertips, from the angle of the head to the direction of the gaze—must be in perfect harmony. Classical Chinese dance also has an extensive array of challenging techniques. Jumps, spins, flips, aerials, and other very difficult tumbling moves supplement and enhance the dance’s expressive powers while adding vigorous physicality and tremendous energy to the show. Alongside classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun features a variety of folk and ethnic dances, presenting China’s rich diversity. The show takes you riding with Mongolians across vast grasslands one moment and climbing up into the Himalayas or drumming on an ancient battlefield the next.

“The magic in many ways comes through the eyes to the audience. Their eyes are alive and sparkling, full of life.”

Stories and spirit

Beyond its beauty, Shen Yun’s uniqueness is in its ability to capture the spirit of traditional Chinese culture. Ancient stories come to life on stage to celebrate compassionate, courageous, and even quirky characters. Audiences experience the thrilling triumph of the Song Dynasty General Yue Fei, cheer on the Monkey King as he tricks a stubborn foe, and witness inspiring scenes of courage from today’s China. “I want the audiences to realize through our show that there is more beyond the materialistic things in life, so even when they are depressed, they can pull themselves through,” says Shen Yun principal dancer Chelsea Cai. “I think the most unique aspect of a Shen Yun performance,” says fellow principal dancer Miranda Zhou-Galati, “is that it has a very strong message of hope, which is something that really touches the audience’s hearts.”

MIAMI

A broad range of theatergoers—from award-winning actors and musicians to political and business leaders—agree. It is not rare to see audience members wiping tears from their cheeks during a performance. Incredibly, stories that have stirred people for thousands of years are still touching today. “Behind [the performance] is the elevation of the human condition,” Congressman Denis Kucinich reflected after seeing the show. “As we celebrate Shen Yun, let us remember the deeper message behind their presence, and applaud it and thank them.” For an uplifting experience and an inspiring taste of culture, see Shen Yun as they tour to a city near you with an all-new show every year.
