Artist that inspire me

Karen Kluglein Her trademark of the dry brush, bold color with intense details, continues to inspire me to study botanical illustrations with color and brush techniques.

Barbara Dziadosz

Oana Befort

Her use of the traditional silk-screen style and graphic form As a person who likes illustration nature and shape graphics, makes her illustrations unique and recognizable. she is the perfect combination of Botanical and Simple form. With her illustrations, I strive to study limited palettes and simple shapes.

Artworks that inspire me 5 HYESEO YOON

Henri Roussearu_ The Dream 1910

David Hockney_ My Parents Oil on canvas, 1977

These masterpieces motivate my artwork through color and forms.

Henri Matisse_ The Open Window 1905

I am influenced by various illustrators. The common connection between them all is how they create work based on their limited palettes and simple forms.

Visual influence & General Inspiration & Books for Studies

Even though it is different from my illustration style, I get a lot of inspiration from concept art used in Pre-productions. Their work always gets my attention with simple shapes and colors to enhance the understanding of the narrative.

General inspiration 9 HYESEO YOON

As I travel, I am inspired by the color and atmosphere of each city. I have traveled to many states after arriving in the U.S. The sensible bright colors are most alive in these warmer areas.

Books for studies

You’ll usually find me reading and studying art books as I wait on my next flight. I study different techniques because I am curious and want to know everything. There’s a ton of stuff in the art world that I don’t know. So, I’ve made a point to read as much as I can to best inform my work.

Welcome to my studio :)

My first space in America is precious and a home I’ve come to love. I had a longing for my family, and wanted to make the house as “homey” as possible. I started collecting magnets during my trips, and now magnets completely cover my fridge door. Everything is a precious memory and full of experiences.

Day in life

My daily life, not straying far from my art, is calm with constant bits of excitement. As seasons change, so does my hair. I started dyeing my hair to express myself. It always changes because I’m always changing and making myself better. Recently, I started making food for my health. As I ate flour, I found that gluten was not right for me. It was then that I began to pay more attention to food. Lastly, my dog, Coco is the biggest part of me. Sometimes, he is the biggest baby, following me around and cuddling with me at night. I don’t know what he would do without me, or what I would do without him. We are each other’s only family in America. It’s hard, and sometimes I want to go home and follow my family around. Coco grounds me and is the baby for the both of us.

I traveled to many places in the United States with Coco. Especially when he was a puppy, a yellow dome bag was our travel

I love colors so much that I went above and beyond to learn all the official color names. By studying my own color charts and colors of the world, I’m one step closer to becoming a master in color.

Creative process

23 HYESEO YOON

I also enjoy taking my illustrations to the next level with three-dimensional work. A little process to making a lamp: • Four layers of wood are trimmed to glue into blocks. • Cut a piece of wood in half with band saw. • Spray primers to create a smooth surface. • Complete with light cord.

• Use the lathe to make the desired lamp shape • Use vacuum -foaming to make a plastic lamp- shape • Paint desired color, then use gloss finish

After my minor in package design, I grew more interested in making my illustrations similar to commercialization. An example of this move is above with my coffee-branding project. Soon, I found myself needing an ink station. So, I made my own—customized to my needs. I took the idea from design-work to sculpture to molding. When I got the perfect mold, I started resin-casting with my choice of color.

Events

Illustration Expo / Hardcore Foamcore Compitition (2nd place, industrial)

25 HYESEO YOON

Every year, SCAD does an Illustration Expo. I was able to participate for the first time in the 2018 Expo. It was my first experience with selling artwork and I took so much away. I was able to meet directly with consumers, seeing what most caught their eyes. They really liked character and commercialized illustrations. They also were drawn to my flat organic shapes. Hosted by the Industrial major department is a semester competition called ‘Hardcore Foamcore’ that continually changes topics. The subject for the semester I participated in was Robot, in which the robot can be completed with only forms and tapes. I designed the entire robot and participated with each detail and construction work.
