end in 1978 to showcase the beautiful Art Deco buildings of South Beach and bring commerce back to Ocean Drive in order to save Miami Beach’s architectural heritage for future generations. This early work by MDPL was the catalyst that created the vibrant, worldclass city we live in today. Art Deco Weekend also raised awareness of many important issues within our city and was vital to MDPL’s numerous successful initiatives. Today, Art Deco Weekend has grown into a wonderful community cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history, art and entertainment. It also continues its mission to educate our neighbors about preservation and continues
MDPL’s advocacy work to preserve and protect not only the Art Deco Historic District, but also to move forward other important preservation and community efforts. This year, the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) celebrates the 41st annual Art Deco Weekend. Art Deco Weekend was created to showcase the beautiful Art Deco buildings of South Beach and bring commerce back to Ocean Drive in order to save Miami Beach’s architectural heritage for future generations. This early work by MDPL was the catalyst that created the vibrant, world-class city we live in today. Art Deco Weekend raised awareness of many important issues within our community and was vital to MDPL’s numerous successful initiatives. For example, MDPL: • Saved the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in one-square mile in the world, a total of nearly 1,200 buildings, through the creation of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District (also known as the Art Deco Art Deco Weekend |
Historic District) • Placed the Art Deco Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and thereby created our nation’s first metropolitan 20th century historic district • Spurred the adoption of the first Miami Beach Historic Preservation Ordinance • Was instrumental in the founding of the Historic Preservation Board of the City of Miami Beach • Was instrumental in the founding of the Design Review Board of the City of Miami Beach • Led the grassroots efforts for the designation of Miami Beach’s 12 Historic Preservation Districts • Led the grassroots efforts for the designation of many local buildings as Historic Preservation Sites, including the Old City Hall of Miami Beach (the city’s first Historic Preservation Site)

Art Deco Weekend is MDPL’s gift to our wonderful city -- a community cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history, art, and entertainment in order to educate the community about preservation and continue MDPL’s advocacy work. A LITTLE HISTORY Fienberg-Fisher comes in two parts, the 1920 building (Leroy D. Fienberg Elementary School) facing Washington Avenue done by H. George Fink and the 1936 building (Ida M. Fisher Junior High School) at 1424 Drexel done by August Geiger. The 1936 building was developed by the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal. Leroy D. Feinberg was the principal of the elementary school from 19621967. Ida M. Fisher was Carl Fisher’s mother. Both buildings have extensive Mediterranean Revival details: arched breezeways, iron work, red barrel tiles. The 1920 building was originally known as the Miami Beach Public School. Now the school, made up of these historic buildings which sit in the center of the Art Deco Historic District, is named Fienberg Fisher K-8. Art Deco Weekend |

A/B/A: A typical tripartite axis of symmetry composition stated in its most simple form with “B” being the major (vertical) and “A” being the minor (horizontal) components. Typical in Art Deco architecture. Bas-relief: Carvings or sculptures that project outward from a background surface. In Miami beach, often featuring tropical flora and sea life. Brise-Soleil: French. Meaning “breaks the sun”. Examples are eyebrows, awnings, ledges. Classic Art Deco: First popularized at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. Usually featured expensive materials and elaborate motifs of fountains, nudes and flora. Also Art Deco Weekend |

known as the “Skyscraper” style. Curvilinear: Contained by or consisting of a curved line or lines. A feature of Streamline Modern style Art Deco buildings. Dentils: Small rectangular blocks that when placed in a row abutting a molding, suggests a row of teeth. Can be seen in “Med/Dec” transitional buildings in Miami Beach. Eyebrow: A horizontal shelf extending outward above a window to form a sun baffle. Façade: Any exterior wall of a building. Porthole: An opening, such as a window, with a cover on the side of a ship or aircraft. Referenced in many nautical style Deco buildings in Miami Beach. Racing Stripes: Decorative horizontal banding wrapping around a building to denote a sense of forward motion and speed.

Rectilinear: Characterized by straight lines and squared off corners. A feature of Classic Art Deco Buildings. Scagliola: Imitation marble made of ground plaster and glue and colored with marble dust. Sidelight: A fixed window positioned to the side of a doorway or window. Spandrel Panel: Rectangular area between the top of a window and the sill of the window a story above. Streamline Modern: Late Art Deco style inspired by the aerodynamics and speed of automobiles, trains ands ocean liners. Vitrolite: Pigmented structural glass, which could be sculpted, cut, laminated curved, colored and illuminated. Often used as a surround or wainscoting. Ziggurat: A “zigzag� shape found on many Art Deco styled structures, having a profile like a staircase.

Tours are a great way to get a look at the city and the architecture of Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District – Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern. Our tours are led by knowledgeable local architects, preservationists, and historians. Unless noted otherwise, all tours begin at the Tour Tent in front of the Art Deco Welcome Center at 10th Street and Ocean Drive. Most tours are approximately 90 minutes. ART DECO SECRETS HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT Hotel Names, Bas Reliefs and Terrazzo Floors— The architects of Art Deco buildings imbedded cultural, artistic and political messages into the designs and names of their hotels. The love of all things streamlined influenced the popularity of certain breeds in the ‘20s and ‘30s with images of greyhounds, borzois and salukis. These breeds were particularly popular in mainstream art and cultural icons, as well as dogs such as Scottish terriers being popular in jewelry pins and broaches. Art Deco Weekend will be celebrating the role of dogs with its own “Bark Deco Dog Show” held on Sunday 14 January at 1 PM on the steps of the Art Deco Welcome Center on Ocean Drive.

In 1993, It Happened One Night was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. ALL ABOUT ART DECO • 11AM David Leddick Learn about the history of Art Deco, how it began in 1925 in Paris at the World Art Exhibit and then went with great effect all over Europe, the USA and the world in the areas of fashion, art, architecture and design in many areas of furniture, ceramics, jewelry and much else. See examples of its effect in the United States and Miami Beach - one of the most important Art Deco centers in the world. David Leddick is an author and actor who has published 33 books, including many photography books as well as eight novels. He has also written a biography on art figures in the 1930s. His latest book is “Is It Hot in Here Or Is It Just Me?”, an autobiography. Davis has written and starred in five musicals internationally. His most recent show is “Rent Boy”, which recently concluded a run in London.

one of the greatest in the world. Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach was published by Don Worth and Nina Weber Worth as the culmination of a cultural exchange program between the two cities. It began in 2005 when the Worths visited Shanghai and met by chance with China’s acclaimed architect Xing Tong He, master planner of the 2010 World Expo. In 2007, MDPL’s Art Deco Weekend was themed A Tale of Two Cities and 23 city planners, architects and government officials from Shanghai attended. Don Worth, a long time Preservationist, has lived with his wife Nina in Miami Beach for twenty-five years. In addition to the Miami-Shanghai project, he has lead efforts to draw attention to the Mid-Century Architecture of Miami and New York City culminating in a photography exhibition in 2002 at the Municipal Arts Society. He received the Peter H. Brink Award for Individual Achievement from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2013 for his work to restore the Miami Marine Stadium now going into in its tenth year.

combined their efforts to define Cuban culture through music, dance, art and architecture. Rosa Lowinger is writer and art conservator with a private practice focusing on sculpture. The author of Tropicana Nights: The Life and Times of the Legendary Cuban Nightclub, she curated the 2013 exhibit Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium at the Coral Gables Museum and served as guest co-curator in 2016 for Promising Paradise: Cuban Allure, American Seduction at the Wolfsonian.

ART DECO TOURISM: PROMOTING MIAMI BEACH AROUND THE WORLD • 6PM George Neary & Ceci Velasco This lecture will highlight Miami Beach’s distinctive architecture and how it lures visitors to come to Miami Beach as well how the ownership and businesses function in the buildings. The architecture began it all. Before the night clubs, the museums, the entertainment…there was the fabulous architecture! The Art Deco District brought The Miami City Ballet, The New World Symphony, The Art Center of South Florida, and so much more to Miami Beach. And now the tourists follow! The buildings house hotels, retail shops and restaurants which have merged uniquely with the historic district to become what is today know internationally as “Ocean Drive”. George Neary has been Associate Vice President of Cultural Tourism for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau since 1998. He is in charge of the creation and implementation of a new arts and cultural programs for Art Deco Weekend |

Miami-Dade County. He directs promotional programs which encourage and increase visitor attendance at local cultural events and attractions. His job also includes creating linkages and partnership between Greater Miami businesses and the arts community. His targets are cultural tourism, heritage tourism and gay & lesbian tourism. Prior his current position, George Neary was the Executive Director of the Miami Design Preservation League of Miami Beach, Florida for seven years. Ceci Velasco is the Executive Director of the Ocean Drive Association. Previously she worked at the iconic South Beach hotspot, Mango’s Tropical Café as its EVP of Operations for three years after serving as the Executive Vice President and COO of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce since 2010. She continues to serve the Miami Beach Chamber as a member of the Board of Governors and Chairs the Tourism and Hospitality Council. She participates on the Marketing Committee for the GMCVB. She also serves as a board member of the Miami Chapter of the Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Among the 105 interviews the Miami Beach Visual Memoirs project has completed several are with architects and developers who discuss preservation and development within the context of preserving Miami’s unique historic districts. We look at how architects and developers meet the challenge of adapting protected structures for preservation and development. Recognition and celebration of Art Deco requires maintenance and up-dating of protected structures and integration of modern architecture as part of the process. We’ll open up the conversation using clips from the archive to motivate the conversation and think about the future. The Miami Beach Visual Memoirs Project is a joint project of MDPL and Close-Up Productions with funding under a grant from the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority.

He has appeared on all the major TV and PBS stations as well as major news and magazine publications and has won several major horological awards as well as Ft Lauderdale City, Convention & Visitors Bureau in 2002. He has exhibited his collection at Flagler Museum, Museum of Discovery and Science, Broward County Historical Societies, Street of Dreams, Food for the Poor and NAWCC conventions in Florida, St Louis and New Orleans. He has taught classes at FAU, BCC, University of Indiana, Chicago City Wide College, Milwaukee Tech College, Broward County Adult Education, International Society of Appraisers and American Appraisers Association.

Miami Beach is adept at reinvention, branding, and promoting its own architectural identity. From a failed coconut plantation, “America’s Playground” blossomed. From the devastation of the 1926 “Great Miami” hurricane, one of the most impressive collections of 20th-century architecture rebuilt its identity. From the abandonment and increasing dilapidation of the 1970s/80s, the city’s activists and entrepreneurs created one of America’s most successful economic development projects through preservation and rehabilitation, despite fierce opposition from historically pro-development city officials. The next challenge will be to establish Miami Beach as a leader in resiliency and adapt to climate change while maintaining the city’s internationally recognizable architectural identity. An overall history of resilience can be patterned from the city’s inception to today. The entrepreneurial spirit and nimbleness of municipal government to enact policies based on economic development and tourism incentives are unparalleled in the state of Florida. In municipal discussions, Miami Beach functions almost as a sovereign island-nation, willing to seek solutions and demonstrate leadership in maintaining quality of life concerns, safeguarding historic resources, and continuing the desirability of real estate investments. Susanne M. Torriente, Miami Beach’s Chief Resilience Officer, stated in the 100 Resilient Cities press release, “Together, we are writing the textbook for addressing sea level rise, reducing our risks, and creating a vibrant and resilient city of tomorrow. Our creative and collective efforts today are the foundation for the future of Greater Miami and the Beaches.” Miami Beach can be utilized as a case study to analyze the extent to which historic preservation has been utilized as a tool for economic and architectural revitalization. The Center for Resiliency and Sustainability at the Miami Design Preservation League aims to incorporate opportunities for these tools to integrate with future municipal improvements, leading Miami Beach to the forefront for new solutions between resiliency planning and historic resources.

A visit to the museum will teach about the three major historic design styles in Miami Beach. These styles are Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and Miami Modern (MiMo). Scale models of select buildings allow you to have a closer look at the elements of these structures. You will also learn about the development of the City of Miami Beach. The Miami Beach Visual Memoirs project has recorded the personal stories of people who have been a part of Miami Beach’s story. MDPL’s history is also on display so that guests can learn more about preservation. The museum includes a resource center, a children’s area, rotating exhibits and much more!
The Art Deco Museum allows visitors and locals to better understand the architectural heritage and community culture of Miami Beach. MDPL designed the museum to be educational and informational while reflecting the fun and glamour of Miami Beach.

Michael Young’s special purpose is the love of creating art. At 19 his career began as Automobile airbrush artist and illustrator but soon turned portrait painter, fine artist, author muralist and sculptor. He has written and illustrated several books but is most noted for his Art Deco style which was presented at his first exhibit at New York’s Art Expo in 1987 and purchased by a national gallery and publishing chain. Hundreds of his images have been used in lithographs, serigraphs, prints, puzzles, mural printing, books Art Deco Weekend |
and magazines. Most recently he has created ten paintings of the classic novel “100 years of Solitude” written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez for Brown publishing and currently is painting a historic mural, themed “Brown vs. the Board of Education,” for the State Capital in Topeka Kansas.
