The history of mosaic dates back 4,000 years or more, with the use of terracotta cones pushed point-first into a background to provide decoration. The Moors brought Islamic mosaic and tile art to the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th Century, while elsewhere in the Muslim world stone, glass and ceramic were all used in mosaics. In Arabic countries a distinctive decorative style called zillij uses purpose-made ceramic shapes that are further worked by hand to allow them to fit together perfectly. In the rest of Europe, mosaic went into general decline throughout the Middle Ages. However a flourishing tile industry led to mosaic tiling patterns in abbeys and major religious buildings. The Art Nouveau movement also embraced mosaic art. In Barcelona, Antoni Gaudi produced the stunning ceramic mosaics of the Guell Park in the first two decades of the 20th Century. Today, the art of mosaic is in a healthy state, despite a tendency for it to be thought of as more the work of craftspeople than artists. Perhaps this is a difficulty in accepting the fact that mosaics often have a dual function, for example as flooring, and also because it is a very accessible, non-elitist form of creativity.

‫‪‎‬بدأ فن الموزاييك أو الفسيفساء مشواره قبل ‪ 4000‬عام ليصبح من أجمل‬ ‫فنون الزخرفة على خلفية من الصلصال أو الطين‪.‬‬ ‫حمل المغاربة فن الموزاييك اإلسالمي وفن تزيين الفراغات األرضية الى‬ ‫األندلس في القرن الثامن‪ ،‬فيما كان العالم اإلسالمي في مناطق أخرى‬ ‫يستخدم الحجر والزجاج والسيراميك في صناعة الموزاييك‪.‬‬ ‫تعتمد غالبية الدول العربية على فن مميز للفسيفساء يطلق عليه اسم‬ ‫زليج فهو يرتكز على أشكال محددة من السيراميك والتي يتم صقلها يدوي ًا‬ ‫قطعة قطعة لضمان رصفها بتناغم وانسجام‪.‬‬ ‫إن حركة الفن الحديث اهتمت بالموزاييك‪ ،‬ففي العقدين األولين من القرن‬ ‫العشرين‪ ،‬صنع الفنان أنتوني غودي فسيفساء من السيراميك لحديقة‬ ‫غويل في برشلونة‪.‬‬ ‫‪‎‬أما في باقي أنحاء أوروبا‪ ،‬فغرق فن الموزاييك في غياهب النسيان خالل‬ ‫القرون الوسطى إلى أن أحياه ازدهار قطاع صناعة األرضيات‪ ،‬خاصة في‬ ‫األماكن المقدسة ودور العبادة‪.‬‬ ‫واليوم‪ ،‬يستعيد فن الموزاييك عافيته على الرغم من أن تناقله وتطويره‬ ‫يجري على يد الحرفيين ال الفنانين‪ ،‬ولعل السبب في ذلك يعود الى وظيفة‬ ‫الموزاييك المزدوجة فهو يستخدم لتزيين األرضيات والسقوف على السواء‬ ‫إضافة الى توفره بشكل كبير وتصنيفه ضمن الفنون غير النخبوية‪.‬‬
