Artemide is able to offer an integrated response in terms of light, environmental quality and management in compliance with the principles of sustainability, support of human experience and relationships in order to create the perception of places where humans can feel a sense of belonging.
INTEGRALIS® formula consists on five available technologies and is applied to various products of the Artemide collection.
The technical addendum was created as a preparatory tool for the applicability of the INTEGRALIS® technology through the sharing of a multidisciplinary approach based on science, technology, proxemics and analysis of a safe management that leads to the identification of an innovative and sustainable light solution aimed at a conscious and responsible answer towards humans and environments.

UVC INTEGRALIS also kills viruses reliably and quickly. Artemide uses high performance LEDs. Because this type of disinfection is harmful to humans, it should only be carried out in the absence of people, with a possible integration with white light during people presence.
White INTEGRALIS ofers a Microbial growth control activity (DAY MODE) which is completely harmless for humans, with simultaneous optimum light quality.
White - Violet and Pure INTEGRALIS ofer:

Dedicated user interfaces
Artemide App is a user-friendly and intuitive interface that can be used as a daily tool for private use and as well as a project variable for workplace and retail, public and urban spaces. Human being is the centre of the project, the orchestra director of his light concerto.
Artemide App is an intelligent tool that allows you to easily enter spaces, even unexpectedly. In fact, it does not require any specific wiring, the dialogue between the fixtures and the application takes place through the wireless device present in the lamp. This represents an important saving of time and costs during installation and the freedom to fit into any space, even at the last minute with a complete and dynamic lighting project.
The control with Artemide App, thanks to a simple and intuitive interface, facilitates the user in choosing the most suitable control mode according to the chosen INTEGRALIS® technology.
Artemide developed internally the specific interface for each INTEGRALIS® technology.
Depending on the antimicrobial action chosen in real-time or programmed through the scheduling function, the interface displays specific icons so as to immediately communicate to the user the action that the lamp is carrying out.
These same icons also play the role of buttons acting as recalling of the corresponding setting.
An alert icon, at the top right, also informs the end-user about the possible human presence during the specific function, thus increasing his awareness in using the lighting device in total safety.
Consistently with the traditional controls of the Artemide App, through the four buttons at the bottom it is possible to recall three different scenes with different dimming levels of both white light and Microbial growth control mode, up to the total switching off of each light performance through the OFF button.
Safe Management
Safe and easy management
To ensure complete safety for the user, Artemide has conveniently designed from a photobiological point of view each element of the INTEGRALIS® system in its various models.
The lighting emissions DAY MODE (white light) or NIGHT MODE (violet light), performed by the different INTEGRALIS® technologies, have been developed using the wavelengths of the visible light. Both emissions are easily recognisable and identifiable by the user unlike other types of radiation, particularly in the ultraviolet range, which are not perceptible to the human eye and which manifest their presence only after the damage has been done. Furthemore the NIGHT MODE, from a perceptive point of view, is not intended to be used as illumination for work situations rather than being accettable for possible temporary occupancy of the spaces.
Artemide carries out photobiological risk tests according to IEC 62471 in addition to the requirements of the UNI EN 605981 standard for each product in the INTEGRALIS® collection, in particular as regards to safety from the risk of blue light.
The risk category is indicated in the product sheet of each individual lighting fixture, together with the distances and relative maximum exposure times corresponding to each antimicrobial performance.
In relation to the individual project (number and type of devices provided, installation geometry in particular) it is possible to estimate the potential exposure levels and therefore the admissible exposure times for any occupants of the environment.
In any case, for products whose Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) includes risk categories worthy of consideration (inside the visible spectrum) or for a more energetic performance as Sanification (UV-C), Artemide has developed a safety management system that is able to deactivate these features in case of people presence and manage its activation approval.
Safe eco-system
Safety levels and configurations
The INTEGRALIS® world, as individual or grouped lamps, can be managed in complete safety according to different modes involving interactive real-time commands by the user and automatic commands sent, for example, to the luminaires by means of a scheduler feature via a gateway.
In addition to scalability in terms of manual-automated commands, it is also managed in terms of the level of safety for the activation, in the absence of people, of both the Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE, particularly referred to lighting fixtures with photobiological risk category > 1) and Sanification (UV-C).
The elements that make up the "INTEGRALIS® Artemide App compatible luminaires safety control eco-system" and that can be combined with each other according to project requirements are:
- Artemide App installed on smart-device (required for system configuration)
- BLL wireless switch to be installed behind normal wall switches or remote
- PIR sensors (not supplied by Artemide) combined with wireless BLL switches (for indipendent use) to be remoted
- Door contacts (not supplied by Artemide)

By selecting and combining these components it is possible to implement two main control modes according to two safety levels: basic and advanced
Artemide can therefore supply part of the necessary components, specially developed hardware (such as the control unit for example) that can interact with commercial devices (sensors and door contacts typical of the anti-intrusion industry that will be provided by the installer).
In addition to providing specific components, Artemide can also offer - depending on the complexity of the project - a supervision and commissioning service for INTEGRALIS® luminaires and devices during installation.
For not-App-compatible projects and controls, the system does not require the installation of the BLL wireless switch or INTEGRALIS® control unit; the safe management remains responsibility of the customer and is delegated to qualified external installers.

A. Base Level Safety
BLL wireless switch
INTEGRALIS® mode
The "Base level safety management" is carried out by the installer via a BLL wireless switch supplied by Artemide, which is easily programmable from a simple interface in the Artemide App.
The BLL wireless switch is an intelligent component for standard back wiring and can be combined with normally open dry contact push buttons, these not supplied by Artemide and left to the installer.
The BLL wireless switch allows the management of presence sensors and door contacts, typical commercial components of the anti-intrusion world, therefore not supplied by Artemide and which must be installed by a qualified fitter.
The BLL wireless switch is pre-set in standard modality to work with all kind of Artemide products (in standard mode - see Artemide App user guide for more information).
Once enrolled in the INTEGRALIS® network through Artemide App, it must be set very easily on the automatic INTEGRALIS® setting thus using a faster pre-set configuration.
In the "Base level safety management", the security of the system is based exclusively on BLL interaction among devices. Therefore it is recommended to be applied with general light products usually associated with a minimal photobiological risk category.
DAY MODE
INTEGRALIS® lighting performance is working in Microbial growth control (DAY MODE) in order to control the bacterial load during people presence and in normal daily activities. When the PIR (passive infra-red) sensor and/or the door contact are open, working together or separately, they impede the Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE).
Light can be dimmed by Artemide App on smart devices.
NIGHT MODE
The Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) is performed during people absence once the entire safety chain (PIR sensor and/or door contact) is fully respected: PIR sensor doesn't detect any presence and door contact is closed. Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) can be activated both from Artemide App on smart devices or from wireless switch through a push button connected to it.
During the commissioning phase of the wireless switch through Artemide App, the installer can set the destination of Antimicrobial action command.
DAY MODE
Once people come into the space, the safety chain is interrupted: PIR sensor detects human presence and/or door contact is open. The lighting fixture is automatically set on the previous status before Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) was set.

B. Advanced Level Safety
INTEGRALIS® control unit
The "Advanced level safety management" is based on the presence of the INTEGRALIS® control unit designed by Artemide for maximum protection of the individual especially for applications with lighting fixtures that have photobiological risk category > 1.
This device is responsible for activating the Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) or Sanification (UV-C) in compliance with two basic conditions:
- the safety chain is closed (sensors, door contacts do not signal human presence, safety keys or emergency button not operated)
- the electrical current reading is in compliance with the threshold levels set during installation, for both DAY and NIGHT modes.
In fact, the highest level of reliability is ensured by the continuous current reading, which is relayed to an current sensing device connected to the control unit, guaranteeing a two-tier security level should the BLL communication protocol fail.
The configuration of the INTEGRALIS® control unit takes place through a dedicated interface in the Artemide App where, by enabling the device, it is possible to set an automatic reset of the Antimicrobial action or Sanification by setting the following parameters:
- exit time and duration of Antimicrobial action or Sanification
- scheduler.
In order to ensure the most inclusive feedback possible to the user, the INTEGRALIS® control unit can be combined with visual or acoustic indicators such as:
- indicator lights showing whether antimicrobial action is taking place
- an acoustic buzzer indicating its activation.
Real-time testing of system operation is also possible via the App.
INTEGRALIS® control unit and BLL wireless switch
It is also possible to integrate a BLL wireless switch into the safety management system operated by the INTEGRALIS® control unit, which, when connected to wall-mounted push-buttons, allows commands to be sent (to activate the Antimicrobial action and to return to the previous status) not only from the Artemide App. In this case, it will not be possible to keep the room exit time and Antimicrobial action duration active (NIGHT MODE).
DAY MODE
INTEGRALIS® lighting performance is working in Microbial growth control (DAY MODE) in order to control the bacterial load during people presence and in normal daily activities. When the PIR (passive infra-red) sensor and - or door contact (or other security systems) are open, working together or separately, they impede the Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE). Light can be dimmed by Artemide App on smart devices.
DAY MODE
The Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) or Sanification (UV-C) are performed during people absence once the entire safety chain (PIR sensor and-or door contact or other security systems) is fully respected: i.e. PIR sensor doesn't detect any presence. Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) or Sanification (UV-C) can be activated from Artemide App on smart devices after having set, by Artemide App, the "exit time" and "the duration" of the Antimicrobial Action or Sanification.
This programmed set up allows you to activate the Antimicrobial action or Sanification being still inside the space being advised by the acoustic buzzer rings during the entire "exit time" and by the internal light alarm flashing till these two antimicrobial performances are on.
NIGHT MODE / UV-C
For the entire duration of the Antimicrobial action (NIGHT MODE) or Sanification (UV-C) the external light alarm is on.
The acoustic buzzer is switch off till the PIR sensor detects a human presence playing a single ring to sign the change of the lighting status is going to the previous one before Antimicrobial action or Sanification were set.

Materials resistance

When applying INTEGRALIS® technology in living spaces, it is advisable to take into account the UV wavelength degradation effect, present to some extent, on the finishing materials of the environments.
Resistance to ultraviolet rays is defined as the ability of a material to resist UV radiation, which can have a strong impact on the appearance and mechanical properties of materials.
The possible changes in the materials, depending on the extent of their resistance to UV, can in fact impact on various aesthetic aspects (such as yellowing, discolouration, whitening of the surface with the formation of stress cracks and streaks) and/or a variation in the mechanical properties such as embrittlement, softening and deformation.
Artemide has carried out accelerated aging tests on the main materials, reproducing the damage caused by exposure to the wavelengths used in the PURE INTEGRALIS and UV-C technologies. The results of these tests have made it possible to determine guidelines for the identification of any critical applications based on the behaviour of the different families of materials studied. They also highlighted how visible radiation is less damaging or degrading than UV-C.
Metals: UV resistant thanks to the presence of free electrons that absorb energy from photons, so UV-C does not cause any chemical bond disassociation (instead typical of polymers).
Ceramics: UV resistant thanks to very strong chemical bonds that require very high energy levels to be broken.
Polymers: generally susceptible to UV degradation due to the presence of fairly weak covalent bonds, polymers with double C-C bonds are the most subjected to degradation. The most frequent degradation mechanisms are photolysis (breaking the polymer chain) and the formation of radicals that can react in the presence of water or oxygen (hydrolysis or oxidation). The deterioration can also affect the physical characteristics (e.g. ductibility, mechanical strength) or produce yellowing.
There are also paints with metals inside them (absorbing UV) that can protect polymers (still to be investigated).
In the development of an INTEGRALIS® project, Artemide can suggest materials that are, by their nature, more suitable for these exposures, even if a final comparison with the manufacturer of the materials themselves will be necessary to verify their compatibility of use.
Traces for lighting projects
Photometric and Radiometric calculations
INTEGRALIS® products that operate in the visible light range (not UV-C) are first and foremost objects that emit light and therefore the project is primarily treated from a photometric point of view to ensure the correct light emission in terms of illuminance and the relative comfort on the part of the end user, depending on the intended use of the space.
The photometric approach is integrated with the radiometric one, related to the antimicrobial potential of each technological solution. It is expressed in a double calculation concerning the two possible radiometric performances DAY MODE and NIGHT MODE.
For Violet INTEGRALIS and UVC INTEGRALIS products, only the radiometric calculation is carried out as these wavelengths are unsuitable for visual tasks since the first is totally violet and the second is invisible to the human eye.
By calculating the radiometric effectiveness of the various devices equipped with specific INTEGRALIS® technology, Artemide adds a further level of competence and know-how being able to offer a design service dedicated to each individual space.

Radiometric calculation for 405 nm and UV-C
In projects which apply products equipped with INTEGRALIS® technologies operating in the visibile wavelengths (380-780nm), the calculation of the irradiance in the violet-blue light range is carried out considering hours of application during day and night (typically 12 + 12) in order to garantee two different levels of antimicrobial effect: Microbial growth control or Antimicrobial action.
The two energy levels emitted by INTEGRALIS® products have been amply tested by the research conducted by Artemide with the support of the Biotechnologies Life Sciences Department of the University of Insubria and the Molecular Medicine Department of the University of Padua.
The following pages show examples of application for each of the INTEGRALIS® technologies. These calculations are declined according to two typical environments, a single desk and an open space environment, with the aim of giving design guidelines that take into account the performance between light and radiometric performances.
The same calculation method, only radiometric in this case, is applied to UVC INTEGRALIS products.
The UV-C radiation, by its nature different from the visible one, requires significantly shorter application times which are defined each time according to the type of project and the antimicrobial effect desired.
