Visual comfort is a top priority. The Prescription department produces lighting planning studies that guarantee lighting level and luminance control, a uniform light distribution over the entire work surface, as well as the choice of the latest generation of lamps and ballasts.
• • • •
The MY WHITE LIGHT system, exclusively developed by Artemide, can simultaneously manage colour temperature and luminous intensity according to preset scenari.

Low energy and maintenance innovations
100% European design and fabrication
In the spirit of the Kyoto Convention on reducing greenhouse effect gases and of the European Directive on improving the energy efficiency of buildings (2002/91/CE), Artemide has developed solutions providing up to 75% energy savings compared with systems of an earlier design:
All the Artemide lighting fixtures are developed in Europe, in close collaboration with designers and architects, occasionally as part of a specific project.
• High efficiency fluorescent lamps (up to 104lm/W)
The widely acknowledged care brought to the design of Artemide models contributes to the aesthetic dimension of the architectural projects of which they form part.
with a 20,000 hour service life, • Major makes of electronic ballasts (A classes only), • High performance optical systems (aluminium
optics or Prismoptic screen), • INTERACTIVE-DALI type management systems
Production takes place in factories based in France and in Italy, where Artemide maintains a very positive environmental culture (carbon balance, ISO 14001 certification in hand).

125 lux at ground level is enough to provide good visibility in corridors, stairways and lobbies. Recessed light fittings installed in a line perfectly meet this requirement. Indirect lighting fluorescent systems can also help to enhance passage way areas.

Combining a general system that provides a comfortable and uniform level of lighting with individual light fittings appliances for customised light level is a solution that is particularly welcomed by users. The INTERACTIVE-DALI system (combining motion sensors and daylight control) not only provides true comfort to users, but also meets the environmental energy saving requirements.

Lighting in meeting rooms
Lighting design for meeting rooms which constitute the venue for discussions and debates must meet several requirements: lighting working surfaces for tasks such as reading and writing but also providing light that does not inconvenience other people sitting round the table. By combining two independent lighting systems, particular situations such as video presentations can be managed comfortably.

For these places where concentration and quiet predominate, lighting design tends to comprise a general lighting system enabling the works on the bookshelves to be identified (vertical lighting) and individual light fittings for use when reading documents on the reading table (horizontal lighting).

Artemide is lighting up ALTO’Sphère. A clearly innovative project in terms of energy saving and respect for the environment.
Artemide, project partner
For its new head office, the ALTO Ingénierie design office has joined forces with the AA Feraru architects partnership to construct the first 100% timber office building in the Ile-de-France. This is a high environmental performance, 1,065m² ground + first floor building: • 40 kWh of final energy per m² of total net floor area, all uses considered together, • A building designed to achieve the German PASSIVHAUS label: heating consumption <15 kWh/m² /year and draught-proofing below 0.6 vol/hour at 50 Pa, • Heat produced by a heat pump on geothermal sensors, • 50m² of photovoltaic cells offsetting 11% of energy requirements, • Storm water management with collection for internal requirements (WC, cleaning, watering) and 0 discharge (120m³ seepage pit), • No air-conditioning: a comfortable summer environment provided by natural ventilation.
• Optimised natural lighting with large glass surfaces
(30% of total vertical surface, and 4% of total horizontal surface). • Storage of CO² in timber: 230 tons.
•
The optimised natural lighting design combined with intelligent artificial lighting (the Artemide INTERACTIVEDALI solution) is used to reduce annual running time by 50%.
•
Rated power has been halved thanks to a preliminary office layout, identified at the design phase, combined with the use of high performance lighting equipment. Ultimately, forecast consumption will be equal to 5 kWh/m² /year, compared to the 16 kWh/m²/year recommended by French regulations (RT2005). A lighting-only meter will validate these calculations.

For the 18 individual and open plan offices, Artemide has designed a special version of its NOTA BENE system with user comfort and optimized energy performance in mind: • T16 HE 28W fluorescent lamps providing 104 lm/W (at a 35° working temperature) efficiency, an 85 colour rendering index (IRC) and a 20,000 hour service life (lamps maintenance every 10 years), • Low luminance optics using extremely pure aluminium (MIRO4), 100% direct emission, guaranteeing 78% light output ratio, luminance levels of less than 300 cd/m² at an angle of 65° from the vertical and a UGR <19, • DALI dimmable electronic ballasts (Class A1), • INTERACTIVE-DALI light management system combining motion sensors (automatic switching on and time delayed switching off), daylight control that takes natural lighting levels into account and infrared remotely controlled adjustment of the user’s preferred lighting level (customized comfort), • 2,400mm extra long modules for a uniform light distribution over the working plan, • Ceiling lamps or pendant light fittings depending on office configuration.
For a 34m² (4 work stations laid out as an island) office type equipped with two NOTA BENE 2x28W units, the following levels are recorded after applying a 0.8 maintenance factor: • Average lighting level over the work surface for a visual task equal to 538 lux, • Average lighting level of the general useful area equal to 301 lux, • Rated power (lamps and ballasts) of 3.66W/m², or a mere 1.22W/m²/100 lux. The INTERACTIVE-DALI system provides true comfort that is highly appreciated by users. The remote control can be used at any time to adjust lighting levels. When commissioned, the maximum comfort level was found to lie within a range of 300 to 400 lux, resulting in a subsequent reduction of energy (only 65% of the rated power).
Passage ways are lit using NOTA BENE dual light emission pendant light fittings for lighting both the floor area and the atrium roof lights. These units are equipped with DALI electronic ballasts and controlled by a photoelectric cell used to adjust lighting levels (and, therefore, electricity consumption) based on the natural lighting levels. The light fittings in the technical rooms, computer room and archive room are controlled by motion sensors. MOUETTE suspended lights have been installed in the rest room, creating a convivial ambience.
