KAREL APPEL CoBrA, originating from the “Experimentele Groep”was established in 1948 by a group of enthusiastic young artists. The initiators included Asger Jorn from Denmark, Pierre Alechinsky from Belgium and Karel Appel en Constant from The Netherlands. Having suffered from the terrors of the Second World War there was an outcry for artistic freedom. In 1948 Constant wrote: ”a painting no longer is a structure of colours and lines, but a beast, a night, a cry, a person, or all of that together” (Manifesto in Reflex, 8 October). In the same year as he created The Owls- De Uilen Karel Appel painted Cry for Freedom (Vrijheidsschreeuw), which is considered to be symbolic for the whole movement. With its pure red, green, blue and yellow colours it was strongly reminiscent of Asger Jorn’s works during the final years of the war. Karel Appel’s work at that time was strongly influenced by Picasso and Miro. CoBrA became synonymous with a powerful expressionist artistic trend combining figurative and abstract tendencies. Karel Appel and his contemporaries found their inspriration in the drawings of children, the mentally ill and in primitive, unspoiled cultures. Appel and other CobrA artists sought the images of our fantasy, hidden in the subconscious. They created their images influenced by the theories of Carl Jung. In 1950, Karel Appel visited in Paris the exhibition following the “Congres International de Psychiatrie”. He bought the catalogue and illustrated it spontaneously.Animals were very important elements in Karel Appel’s work from 1948 onwards. Their seemingly simplicity makes us regard them as clichés, representing the emptiness in which the stereotype of primitivity becomes clear. In The Owls - De Uilen the treatment of the material, the touch is self-reliant and one can observe how soon the brushstrokes change into a clear pattern before our eyes. The work has set up in fast and sure strokes, in primary colours. The thick application of paint illustrates the sense of childlike naivity, a style that would come to dominate his work for the remainder of his career. In The Owls - De Uilen “… Appel presents a form of painting full of emotion, immediacy and strength, which is tied to the archetypical, the original and the human image. The rough, simplified figuration fully reflects the primitive art and children’s drawings… (F. Steininger, Karel Appel, Bratislava 2005, p.39). In the best tradition of the CoBrA characteristics the present work shows all the qualities of an animal, just like a child would draw it.

Perriand’s work targeted on functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in forming a better society. The name of the present sideboard derives from the city called Cansado and is a main architectural project in Mauritania of 750 housing units constructed between 1959 to 1963. This sideboard was part of the designs created for the houses of the city. Perriand collaborated with the manufacturer Steph Simon for this project.

Hans J. Wegner is a key figure for Danish chair design with a track record of designing many chairs such as the international recognised Hans Wegner Wishbone Chair, Wegner Wing Chair, and Wegner Shell Chairs. The balance of form as much as function lies in reaching the ultimate user’s comfort within a sculptural work of art.

This rare piece is most probably named after Bloc’s Bellevue house in Meudon, France. Architect André Bloc was in his work inspired by the flowing abstract forms of the sculptures by Jean Arp. All models have a S-shaped backrest and seat that are made of a single piece of material supported by a metal construction. Other designers had already been challenging themselves to make a chair out of one piece ve Rietveld with his ‘Zig-Zag’ chair combining a wooden back, seat and frame into one piece. Opposingly, as it was impossible for Bloc to make his chair from one piece, he held onto the contrasting elements leaving behind these structural difficulties.

Daan van Golden lives and works in the Netherlands. His work has influences deriving from Pop art, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art, and integrates themes relevant to our daily lives. He won the prestigious Foundation for Lifetime Achievement Award for Visual Art, Design and Architecture (BKBV) in 2011 for his artistic contribution and his work can be found in major important private collections. Daan van Golden has always worked slowly, having even stopped working for almost a decade in the late sixties. His work is considered to be rare and for the most part it resides in the collection of Dutch museums. The present lot: Study A.G. by Daan van Golden is a reflection of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). The three dimensional sculpture was recreated by van Golden to a contour of Giacometti’s art, and is undeniably reflective of the sculpture Woman Standing (Leoni), 1947 (Guggenheim, New York). Executed in 2000, Study A.G. exemplifies Daan van Golden’s redefinition of form through appropriation. A constant factor in this capricious oeuvre is his use of existing images. He is fascinated by the changes and distortions displayed by an image when it is executed in another medium. Daan van Golden shows that the unique beauty and identity of an object can be shown through in-depth study. For his first silhouette painting (Study H.M.) Van Golden choose a detail from a famous Henri Matisse painting: The Parakeet and the Mermaid, 1952 (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam). It is no coincidence that Van Golden’s first silhouette work is inspired by Matisse; the celebrated French painter is the inventor of the gouache cut-out in pure colors. More than an act of homage, Van Golden draws the distinction between perception and apperception. Van Golden’s work, as shown in the present lot, shows extreme tension between the pattern and the background, and through its exploration he underlines the importance of emptiness to the definition of forms and calls into question the visual certainties of the spectator. Meticulously painted against a flat monochrome background the motif is reproduced accurately, the formal and and laborious technique reframes the original object, imbuing it with new meaning. Since the 1960s, he has been the subject of numerous solo shows at institutions including The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; The Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, The Netherlands; Le Consortium, Dijon; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Gemeente Museum, The Hague, the Netherlands; Musee d’art modern et contemporain, Geneva; Musée des Arts Contemporains de la Communauté Française de Belgique, Grand Hornu; and Wiels, Brussels.

Antoon van Welie (1866-1956) is a Dutch Symbolist painter, well known for his portrait works. He was born and raised in a Catholic family in Afferden, a small town in the province of Limburg, in the south of The Netherlands. Van Welie was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp, Belgium, from 1886-1887. The same year, he entered a competition held by the Dutch King Willem III. The prize was a not inconsiderable amount of 2.000 francs and a scholarship. Having won the prize, he was able to make the Grand Tour, and travel through Italy, France and Germany, like all great painters of his time In 1895 Van Welie was appointed as a teacher at the ‘Koninklijke School voor Nuttige en Beeldende Kunsten’ in ‘s- Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, and mythical stories, legends and fairytales became the main subjects of his work. This is exemplified by the current lot- Ophelia (1898-1899) – as well as Van Welie’s interpretation of the timeless love story of Tristan and Isolde (1901-1919) and Paolo and Francesca (1896-99). They represent their naturalist interest and taboo topics but in a covered up manner. The stylistic elements Symbolists use are not allegories, but are intended to awaken particular states of the mind. Though the Symbolist movement began in France, Symbolism was an international avant-garde movement that spread across Europe and North America during the last two decades of the nineteenth century. Symbolist artists, among of them was Van Welie, were especially inspired by Pre-Raphaelites, such as; Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Edward Burne – Jones and John William Waterhouse. The present lot [insert lot number] is a depiction of a scene from Shakespeare’s Hamlet (Act IV, Scene VII) in which Ophelia - driven out of her mind when her father is murdered by her lover Hamlet - drowns herself. The story of Ophelia inspired a number of fin de siècle artists; Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896) and John William Waterhouse (1894-1917) who preceded Van Welie. “When down her weedy trophies and herself Fell in the weeping brook. The ellipse shape is inspired by the shape of the dashboard of a Bugatti type 50 automobile. Lemmens designed and made only twenty Bugatti vases, executed in varied types and colours of Japanese lacquer, all based on feet made out of precious materials. Lemmens was focused on the lacquer technique from the eighties onwards establishing a high qualitative oeuvre. His trademark is the Japanese lacquer technique combined with a European style, partly influenced by the Art Deco.

Bench, 1967 Galvanised metal base, stained pine 73 by 172 by 44 cm. € 8.000-10.000 R Dom Hans van der Laan, son of an architect, started his study architecture at the Technical University in Delft (1923-1926) but he quitted the program before completion and instead became a monk at the St. Paul’s Abbey in Oosterhout in the Netherlands. After the WW2, many building has been destroyed and Van der Laan’s took up a course in church design. Later on he became one of the leading figures of the School of Bossch, an architectural movement based on numerical relationships. He designed the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg, Vaals in the Netherlands in 1960 together with these benches and some other small monastery objects. Besides he designed on request some other pieces in very low numbers stating the rarity of his pieces and designs.

This chair is one of only 2 that were made by Jan de Jong in 1960. This chair was probably made for his own home/use. He undertook a course in churches architecture that was given by Hans Dom van der Laan (see bench lot 111). Jan de Jong was an architect who applied the Bossche school to buildings and furniture. A comparison between De Bossche school with ‘De Stijl’ from Gerrit Rietveld is easy to make based on this chair.

Finn Juhl is internationally celebrated as the father of the modern Danish furniture design. Juhl’s pioneering work in furniture design began in the 1930s. With the background of an architect, he invented modern furniture in response to the new trends in architecture emphasizing on form as much as on function. This was in contrast with the traditional styles with heavy ornaments and plush. His signature was the lightness of the seemingly floating back and seat, in juxtaposition with the hard wood of the frame. He was awarded with five Gold medals at the Milan Triennial.

Heinz Siery is active in the German ceramics industry for over 40 years. At the firm Carstens Tönnieshof he got to know his wife who was an employee of the firm and they formed a successful ceramics artist couple. They live together in a gigantic building of five connecting farms that is filled with their bronzes and ceramics. A bronze example of present piece is part of their collection and is situated in their garden. Few ceramic works of the atelier have been sold, just recently the works has been offered on the market probably because of the high age of mister Siery.

Vicky Ambery-Smith has earned an international reputation for her unique style of jewellery based on her interpretations of architecture -ancient and modern- a theme that has developed over 25 years. The Tennis Ball Sofa was produced for the digital art depot of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. In 2008 all the existing museum benches were removed. Besides the museum examples, five benches in total were produced and the present piece is one them.

Rineke Dijkstra acquired international fame thanks to her impressive portrait series. In the early 1990s she began with work on the magisterial series of Beach Portraits, austere, frontal shots of young people on the beaches in the United States, The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Gabon and the Ukraine (the former Soviet Union). In this series Dijkstra concentrated on the moment that a pose just begins to form, or is just being abandoned. Hesitancy and uncertainty are visible in the bearing and glance and refer to the existential lonliness of adolescents. The surroundings, limited only through the framing, the somewhat low camera angle and the use of a fill-in sharpen the often strongly culturally defined details and reinforce the monumental character of the images. Photographs from this series are included in many national and international museum collections, as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The major travelling exhibition ‘Rineke Dijkstra’ was to be seen in Paris, the new photography museum in the Jeu de Paume Winterthur, Fotomuseum (March 11 - May 22, 2005), La Caixa in Barcelona (June 4 - August 21, 2005), at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam until February 6, 2006 and more recently, in 2012, a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisico and at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Chung-Tang Ho created a cabinet that changes shape during use, a solid volume that opens up when objects are stored within it. The cabinet is in fact a sculpture in the round you and your objects can participate in.

The Shunga candleholder recalls a time before electricity when candleholders were placed on bedside tables. Inspired by Japanese erotic drawings, Lachaert & d’Hanis shaped this poetic silver candleholder after a beautiful Shunga picture of a couple making love.

A container for sugar cubes or an ironic reference to Marcel Duchamp’s ‘Why Not Sneeze Rose Sélavy?’ Duchamp raised consumer items to pieces of art. Lachaert and d’Hanis respond by bringing the piece back for use. Made of pure silver.

The wish to shake off existing rules determines this free-standing kitchen. The kitchen functions free of any infrastructure by employing ecological technology aimed at independence. For instance, water recycling, making compost and local energy. The fridge, for example, is cooled by a block of ice in one of the drawers. Without electricity this refrigerator works in the same way as a traditional ice house: the cupboard is cooled by a large block of ice which, as it melts, keeps its contents fresh. The kitchen is a furniture unit which, actually, can stand anywhere.

This object is made by the means of an ancient method from Japan called Shou Sugi Ban. This very intensive and timeconsuming technique burns away the soft parts of the wood, revealing the beautiful and muscular forms of the branches. The extra layer of lacquer is not added so that the inner structures of the wood are revealed. Additionally, in a non-toxic way, the wood is well protected against weather, rot and insects.
