ARTEZANOS HYBRID TILE INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM (T.I.P.V) RESIDENCE MIRAMAR, FLORIDA

Existing asphalt fiberglass shingles make an ideal base roof for a Solar Integrated Artezanos Hybrid Roof Tile System. Asphalt shingles are manufactured using two types of petroleum. They are unsustainable and not very energy efficient . After having verified the structural integrity of the wood deck, one existing layer of existing asphalt shingles can be greatly enhanced via an Artezanos Hybrid retro-fit (roof-over). Sustainable options such as affordable Solar Electric, Solar Thermal and Ornamental Horticulture can be added. This presentation will focus on the solar integration of Unisolar Pvl 68’s Solar Laminates.

Solar laminates such as the Unisolar PVL’s are economical because they simplify both the solar and roof tile installation. They reduce a more intensive roof tile installation as they take up roof space and save you on tile. You will also eliminate the traditional rails and penetrations that come along with traditional solar panels and the leaks that ensue. They operate with diffused light so unlike traditional panels they don’t need to be facing South or South East. This is convenient because one can commit them to the less aesthetic parts of the roof line so as to be less invasive.

The Unisolar PVL 68 in this picture has already been adhered to an Artezanos aluminum Universal Pan. The Artezanos EPS Blocking serves many purposes. In this installation they will serve to elevate the Roof Tile so as not to let them come in physical contact with the Unisolar PVL Solar Laminate. This is one method approved by the manufacturer/distributor for product Warranty. Care has already been taken to protect the Unisolar PVL by covering it with paper so as not to blemish it with the adhesive and other job incidentals. The Unisolar PVL Laminate is adhered to a mill finished Artezanos Universal Pan and is connected with a terracotta colored aluminum adapter designed to deliver a good Fit & Finish connection to the standard Artezanos Universal Step-Formed Pans. This method assists in discretely countersinking the PVL Solar Laminates below the profile of the Handmade Barrel Roof Tile on all sides for a more acceptable look. Adhering the PVL Solar Laminates with the same adhesive used to set the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Roof Tile affords better insulation and air circulation as well as a much greater uplift wind resistance without penetrations in the field!

The tile has been removed so as to reveal the connection detail of the terracotta aluminum adapter. You can easily see how this method can translate the wider solar laden area back to the standard field application of the Artezanos Handmade barrel Tile installation. The wedges of the Artezanos EPS Blocking serve to mate with the 45 degree angle on the Universal Pans. This serves to direct any excess adhesive up the slope so as to attain a stronger bond. The shape of the top of the Artezanos EPS Blocking serve to maximize the use of the PolyFoam Adhesive and create a greater structural bond.

The adhesive used on this job was the PolyPro 100 by PolyFoam Products. One can observe how the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Roof Tiles seemingly float over the margins of the Unisolar PVL Solar Laminates.

The roof tile installation technique used on this roof is a traditional staggered method. This type of installation is designed to offer a more personalized “timeless” look to the residents roof line. Traditional Barrel Tile Roofs are notoriously difficult to integrate with solar. The Artezanos Hybrid System is designed to integrate any solar with any manufactured barrel tile in the World! There are many different installation techniques and many ways to use the same tile on different designs. The Barrel Tile has been one of the World’s most versatile installations for thousands of years!

This type of installation is so rustic and does not rely on the snapping of any chalk lines. The perimeter used on this installation is a traditional handmade Italian or Roman Pan Tile in conjunction with a miniature handmade barrel tile booster. The barrel tile booster automatically sets the right oncenter spacing and guides the placement of the Artezanos Universal Metal Pans. This technique is very simple and creates a human imperfection that translates to an AUTHENTIC OLD WORLD LOOK!

A worker is seen spaying the adhesive to the deck. The PolyPro 100 is a portable unit and is placed in a bucket for better vertical stability.

The adhesive is allowed to expand before setting the Artezanos Universal Pan. The Artezanos Universal Pan economizes the adhesive with the flat surface design. You need less adhesive to create a stronger bond than more conventional roof tile installations.

The first Artezanos Handmade Cover Tile on the perimeter of the roof can be set atop a miniature handmade barrel tile to create a traditional double cap detail. This method reinforces the perimeter eave line against wind up-lift and increases strength on the edge of the roof where one may someday tread upon.

Once the perimeter Artezanos Handmade Cover Tile is set, successive roof tiles are installed in a trailing method until you reach the solar transition or the ridge line of the roof (peak). Again, there is no one right way to install. Actually there are myriad ways to install based on tradition, culture and historical appropriateness. You can install the tiles with mortar, without mortar, you may stagger them more and even stack them as is frequently done in places such as California. You may even use broken pieces and half pieces to further specialize your design.

The louvers cut in the 45 degree angle of the Artezanos Universal Pan can facilitate attachment and help anchor the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Tiles down to the Artezanos Universal pan with the appropriate adhesive.

The next Artezanos Universal Pan is placed snug against the Universal Pan set with the Solar PVL Laminate. Again, care should be taken to center the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Tile on the Artezanos EPS Blocking to eliminate any chance of roof tile/PVL contact.

In the Hurricane High Velocity Wind Zone, it is typical to install a metal ridge to fortify the ridge tile placement. A small cut- out at the base of the metal serves as an ideal passage way to run the terminal ends of the PVL Solar Laminates.

A worker places the next roof tile to complete the Solar Roof Tile Transition.

A view from above, shows how the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Tile surrounds the Unisolar PVL Laminate. The technique in roofing underlayments used here, completely seal the home from water intrusion.

A lateral view of the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Tile shows an acceptable spacing from the Unisolar PVL

When using a completely sealed underlayment roofing system, it is not needed to mortar the rear end of the roof tile.

The crown of the Artezanos Handmade Barrel Roof Tile serve to camouflage the Unisolar PVL Solar Laminate from low angle view.

As the angle of view lowers, The Unisolar PVL Laminate disappears behind the profile of the barrel Roof Tile.

The perimeter forms a natural bird stop and are intentionally left open so as to increase air circulation to promote heat exchange for better energy efficiency.

Some local governments in areas that are prone to wild fires may discourage open eaves for Fire Hazard Mitigation.

Different views of the roof enable one to appreciate how Thin Film profiles such as the Unisolar Semi-Flexible Amorphous PVL 68 Solar Laminate , melt into the scenery.

A completed rear view of the home, reveals an uncovered Unisolar PVL Laminate powering a gable fan along side a PV enabled roof top automatic fan vent. The Artezanos Universal Pans allow any heat buildup trapped during the day a means to escape and dissipate into the night sky minimizing burden to the home’s air conditioner load via process known as nocturnal emissivity. A cooler attic space is one great way to make a residence more energy efficient!

Barrel Tile Roofs are documented to last over 100 years! The Artezanos Hybrid Universal Roof Tile System is a major improvement over this very traditional design.

Glazed Handmade accessories are used to decorate the roof tile ridge line of the home.

The Artezanos Hybrid System is the sustainable low cost way to deliver solar energy systems and leverage the 30% Federal Tax Credit.

Among the many advantages, the Artezanos Hybrid Roof Tile System delivers a powerful curb appeal!

Please note: The homeowner went out of his way to employ as many techniques as possible to maximize his home’s energy efficiency. If we were all to follow the same example, we could gain independence from our use of foreign fossil fuels and sever ties with those countries whose governments are hostile to us.
