Abstract Ink Painting is a form of Abstract Expressionism created by Artist Lesley Blackburn.
The technique uses free flowing acrylic inks and is typically done in bright colours. The Inks are transferred onto a linen canvas either using a Pipette or poured.
The Pouring or splashing technique is carefully controlled as the inks tend to disperse everywhere so if you apply too much ink it is not controlled. I wanted to create specific shapes and usually have an idea or colour scheme before I start.
I sometimes allow the inks to dry before applying new colours. White ink can be used which creates interesting effects and swirling patterns. Colours are interchangeable as they merge together. The canvas is tilted slowly to allow the inks to merge carefully. More recently these paintings have had an underwater theme.
The fish are non representational, or fantasy but they remind people of the ocean. The Fluid effect of the inks compliments an oceanic theme.
I used Inks in 2011 to 2013 and created a series of London Landmarks: namely Big Ben and the houses of Parliament, and a huge tripartite painting for a London property developer. In 2019 I am a visiting Lecturer for the Runnymede Arts Society where I will teach groups of 40 students the Techniques of Acrylic Ink Painting.
