“NATURE IS SUCH AN IMMENSE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR ME” Bountiful celebrates the beauty of the Midwest and its countryside. Can you tell us how living in the Midwest has become an important aspect of your life?
the Bountiful line are from my imagination and I tend to design more in feelings then specific places. So in a way, each print is a little glimpse inside my head! 3. The color palette you chose for Bountiful is so fresh! It’s airy enough for spring/summer projects and can transition nicely into warm fall projects. What are some projects you envision being made with your collection?
I’m excited to think about all the possibilities! From clothing to home decor, I feel this collection could have so many looks. There’s a I grew up in the Midwest and love the landnice mix of feminine and masculine prints, scape, people, and seasons. The only print that was inspired by a place is Tartan Field. I was flying home from the Salt 4. Do you have a favorite colorway? collection in one or two words! 8. Your collections are filled with natural elements such as nature studies, trees, flowers, etc. What are some aspects from nature that inspire you to translate that beauty into your fabrics?
6. Many of your collections including Bountiful have a combination of hand-drawn and digital elements. What are some things you love about both techniques? The process of designing is fascinating to me. I find that drawing my motifs by hand or creating them through a mixed medium allows me to be more involved in my finished design. Every print in Bountiful was either hand drawn or pressed (printed) before turning into digital images for a repeat pattern. It’s not just about making a pretty print, it’s about art for me and how do I get what’s in my head to translate into a repeat pattern. For Haymow, I made a linoleum cut block to ink and press onto paper. Arborescent used actual leaves from one of my walks that were inked and pressed onto paper. 7. From gathering ideas to designing every print, the fabric design process is very involved. What are some of the most difficult things about designing fabrics? Possibly the most difficult is the original concept--what the collection is to be about. I like to have each collection have it’s own personality but still have the Sharon Holland hand. Once I have a concept, then it’s pretty easy to build my story in my head about how I interpret and shape it. The second most challenging part is naming a collection! The name has to say everything I feel and imagine for the
My father was an avid gardener growing up, I watched and helped him start his vegetables from seed, plant, weed, and harvest our large garden. Taking care of our fruit trees, bees, garden, pets, and home was part of our everyday. My love of nature has continued all my life and into my own homes and gardens. As a painter I primarily paint landscapes, trees, barns, and sky. It’s just part of who I am so naturally designing nature inspired prints brings me joy. 9. To coordinate with Bountiful you created a beautiful quilt named “Raise the Roof” (available as a free quilt pattern). Can you tell us all about the design of this quilt? Raise the Roof is inspired by the traditional Log Cabin block but instead of several blocks, this quilt is one BIG block. All the prints from the collection are in this quilt and the large pieces show off the designs. I arranged the fabrics in with light on one side and darker prints on the other almost like a sunshine and shadow effect. 10. Last but not least, do you have any tips for beginner sewists venturing into the world of AGF? So many different looks can come from one collection and with the addition of AGF solids, blenders, and denim fabrics the possibilities seem endless! I love how AGF produces Lookbooks for each collection and shows you how the fabrics look in quilts, clothing, bags, and so many other fabulous projects. It’s nice to see examples of how to use the different substrates before you begin a project. Be sure to take advantage of all the free patterns, tip, and tutorials that AGF has to offer--I wish I had these resources when I first started sewing!
