“I am Maureen. A stay-at-home mother of three, a lover of all things crafty and creative, and I make things by hand, at home in small town Pennsylvania.” Maureen Cracknell lives in small town Potter Country, Pennsylvania. She is a mother, wife, blogger, quilter, and lover of all things creative and handmade. Just a little over four years ago she started sewing and blogging at Maureen Cracknell Handmade; a simple, positive, and creative blog where she loves to share her projects, fabric stashes, sewing, and special family moments. Two years into blogging, she opened a Facebook page with intentions to share and connect with people who, like her, live with a passion to sew and quilt--most of who follow her blog, which has been supported and grown to over eighty thousand followers. These supporters continually give her encouragement and the opportunity to follow her path of creating and sharing. She’s been a proud member of several fabric manufacturer design teams throughout the years, including Art Gallery Fabric’s popular Fat Quarter Gang, and continues to work as an Independent Designer for Janome Sewing Machines. She is incredibly grateful for each of the opportunities that have led her where to where she is today!

“... I WOULD BE A HEALING FAIRY NAMED MEADOW THAT LIVES IN A MAGICAL LAND OF WILDFLOWERS” 1. Hey Maureen! It’s great to have you back for another collection release! Can you tell us all about your new collection Flower Child? “Hidden amongst Mother Earth’s beauty lives the Flower Child. A world filled with lush meadows, wild bouquets & the spirit of the flower child painted with fuchsia, blush pink & teal.” is the description I wrote to describe this collection, but just like my previous collections, Flower Child tells a personal story about my life. Since I was a little girl I’ve had a passion for flowers and pretend play. My earliest memories are of my sisters, neighborhood friends and I venturing out into the woods behind our house to create a magical world of our own -building forts, gathering flowers, making stews and mudpies, always returning home covered in dirt. A childhood full of precious make believe memories that I’ve had the pleasure to pass onto my own kiddos. So many of my Flower Child prints are dedicated to the garden meadow, forest and fairies that continue to inspire me today because of nostalgia.
2. Here at AGF, we love how you reinvent the idea of boho style in every collection you have designed. In the case of Flower Child it has an enchanting free spirited feel. Where did you find inspiration for this magical collection? As I mentioned above, so much of the inspiration from Flower Child came from my childhood memories, as well as the appreciation for make believe and the joy & wonder of exploring the natural world that I’ve shared with my children. I additionally drew inspiration from my favorite animated movie, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. It’s a special film about a fairy named Crysta who lives under the canopy in the rainforest of Australia, that I recommend to everyone, both young and young at heart! 3. One of the most interesting and beautiful prints in this collection is the Sisterhood print featuring pretty multicultural girls. How would you like to see this print being used in projects? Sisterhood is a special print to me that I hope everyone loves just as much as I loved making it! I envision this print being used for everything from garments to bags, to being fussy cut to frame in quilt blocks or to add as appliques to personalize special handmade items. 4. This collection reminds us of childhood memories where we would pretend to be magical. Did you ever pretend that you were a fairy when you were a kid? Oh my gosh YES! All the time and so have my children. I wish I could share the photos of the fairy houses we used to make using just found objects, branches, bark and moss. I’ll have to
away that designing a flower inspired block would be the perfect companion to this flowery collection. Since Sharon is such a pro when it comes to sewing curves, I knew she was the best quilter for the job and I am so in LOVE with the quilt she made!
share a photo on my Instagram when I share more in depth about Flower Child, and the inspiration behind it, in the weeks ahead! 5. This might sound a bit silly, but if you were a fairy what kind of fairy would you be? No, not silly at all! I would be a healing fairy named Meadow that lives in a magical land of wildflowers. This may not be the first time I’ve played this game! *wink* 6. The “Enchanted Meadow” print is like a fairytale on fabric! What kind of scene did you have in mind when you were designing this print? When I first drew the artwork for Enchanted Meadow it was a little flat. It was Pat Bravo who really pushed me creatively to add the extra layers of depth, which made my Enchanted Meadow print much more special! I’m always so grateful for her mentorship. From the beginning my goal was to create a meadow I could envision running into, picking bouquets of wildflowers, being greeted by sweet forest friends, while I ran towards the castle as the sun set. I’m so happy with how it turned out! I can’t wait to use it for quilt backs and whole cloth projects! 7. Now, let’s talk about the free quilt pattern! We love how you translated the idea of a flower crown into a beautiful quilt. What made you focus on curves for the block design? This quilt pattern was designed by Sharon McConnell of Color Girl Quilts, creator of the Classic Curves Ruler. Sharon and I agreed right
8. The “Cosmic Sister” print with the little hands is cute while having a surrealist art feel. What makes this print an essential part of this collection? Once my Sisterhood women were finished right away I began sketching hands. I started reading more about the Hamsa symbol, how in all faiths it’s a protective sign that brings happiness, luck, good health and good fortune. Immediately these hands seemed so fitting. A representation of femininity and a symbol of power are meaningful things I read that made Cosmis Sister feel like an essential print for Flower Child, as well. Now it’s one of my most favorite prints! 9. You are currently hosting the Community Sampler sew along with Sharon Holland and it’s been a lot of fun so far. Do you plan on incorporating Flower Child into your sampler quilt? Yes, it’s been a lot of fun! There’s a block called Weathervane that we recently shared and it’s a favorite of mine that’s so perfect for fussy cutting and featuring a focal print. I hope to make a quilt using just this Community Sampler block with these new Flower Child fabrics! 10. What projects would you love to see being made with Flower Child? This colorful collection has the same feel to me as my Nightfall collection and I SO hope people enjoy sewing with it just as much! It really is perfect for all sewing, for any age. I hope the feelings of dancing amongst the wildflowers and being free are felt while sewing with Flower Child!
