SINIBALDI

“SUCH CALM IN THE HOUSE, SUCH HAPPY KIDS AND FULL BELLIES. YEP, THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS IS MY FAVORITE.” 1.Hey, Amy! It’s great to interview you for another collection release. Especially, since this is a special one. Can you tell us all about Little Town? Little Town has been a long time in the making and I’m so glad it’s here at last. This wintery collection is imbued with hints of my favorite holiday themes, without being over the top or too juvenile. I really love all kinds and styles of fabric, but when it comes to quilts and decorations in my home I prefer a bit of subtlety and so Little Town fits the bill quite nicely. Finally I can make a set of stockings for my family and not question at all what fabric to use! Ha ha! This collection is so versatile and wintery I look forward to seeing how other people use it. 2. This collection is not only the first holiday collection you designed but it’s also the first holiday collection AGF has released! What

inspired you to create such a festive range of prints? You know what, right after Paperie was finished I talked with my art director and we decided that it would be so fun to create a winter line. It was a natural fit since I’m probably one of the first AGF designers that loves novelty prints. Before designing fabric, I worked a lot with 1930’s repros and cute little prints that work well with themes, so it wasn’t a big stretch for me. 3. Your description of Little Town reminds us of a magical fairytale. Were there any books that influenced the way you created the imagery for this collection? Little Town is a magical town… where winter lasts the whole year through. It’s nestled in a pine forest, and I can just imagine peeking over a giant evergreen branch and discovering this tiny village in the distance. While working on Little Town, I was trying to strike a delicate balance and so to keep myself from being too influenced by any one source, I didn’t dwell too long with any books or art, though I always have sugar plums dancing in my head. ;) 4. For most people, the holidays are their favorite time of the year. What do you love the most about the holidays? I love ALL the Christmas music, the way the

way it’s very traditional, but choosing to pull certain prints and to work exclusively with just some of the collection changes the look entirely. So it’s a bit chameleonesque. It can be modern, it can be traditional, it can be soft, it can be all these things. 7. What do you envision being made with your collection outside of winter? Nearly all of the prints from this collection could go either way ~ winter or all year through! The stars, the ribbons, the tree farm and winterberry prints could be used all year through and I don’t think anyone would blink an eye. I made a fun bag with the Tree Farm print and that has already gone with me to the pool!

house is decorated with a candle in every window, and all the sweets! Most of all I love the traditions, like watching the whole Harry Potter movie series, Elf, Charlie Brown, and myriad others. Then of course making sugar cookies, pavlova, and wrapping presents. The season starts off calmly and then gets terribly busy and then at last… the day after Christmas is the BEST day! Such calm in the house, such happy kids and full bellies. Yep, the day after Christmas is my favorite.

8. This is a tough one...What’s your favorite print from Little Town and why? You’d think it would be hard for me, but no, hands-down, my favorite is the “Snowdrift” print in both colorways ~ that is the little village print. Making each of the little buildings’ windows and doors was fun. Zooming into 1000% on Illustrator and making little details is probably my favorite part of designing.

5. How does it feel to sew for this festive season in the summer? I’m so excited to have this collection right now, because it gives me plenty of time to sew those projects that I generally can’t get finished in time for the holidays. If you decide to start sewing for Christmas at the busiest time of the year, how much can you really accomplish??

9. All creatives have different ways of working. How would you describe your design process? I’m not really a planner and I wish I was a little bit more organized, but I do prefer to let things happen as they will. To stay open to where creativity takes you is more fun than checking off a list of must-do’s. That said, I generally start off every collection with a bit of research and a note page of “jumping boards” or cues. Funnily enough, with Little Town, a lot of those prints made from my original notes hit the cutting room floor. Maybe there will be a Little Town II :)

6. Although some of the elements of this collection are wintery, the color palette is unconventional compared to the usual red and green. How did you choose the colors for Little Town? The Little Town palette is a bit unconventional, I suppose, but I rather think it looks like a vintage Christmas card all together. In that

10. This is one of the first of many collections that include our new substrate Rayon. What do you plan on sewing with this soft and silky substrate? Well I’ve already made a fabulous head kerchief with the rayon, but I also plan on making infinity scarves (for quick easy gifts), and dresses for the girls and for me, too!
