“Color is of the utmost importance in design.”

I was born and raised in Chicago, but decided to move to Scottsdale, Arizona with my two teenage daughters: Anna and Emily, and my husband Kevin to stay closer to my family. I have been passionate about design for as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother would paint and craft, so it was only a natural progression that I would inherit her love of crafting. I began crafting and creating jewelry, but when I first learned to sew I knew I had found my passion. I was hooked on it. That obsession is what inspired my own handmade handbag business and my first book: Inspired to Sew. My style is rather eclectic, and has grown over the years into what you see today. While I love vintage and soft designs, I am constantly drawn to color and bold prints which are very modern, as well as mixing the two for surprising combinations. I don’t hold back when it comes to mixing fabric prints and colors. The world around me inspires me…. I look at photos and imagine faraway pla-ces. I see a color and that inspires a whole collection. I am a color junkie. It was my love for fabric that got me back into graphic design and specifically textile design. In 2009, I created my first fabric line, Full Bloom. Since then, additional lines proceeded. Due to their popularity, they were featured in magazines including Accessories, Romantic Homes, Quilts and More, Studios, Belle Armoire, and many more.

Q &A

Bari J. “ MY FLOWERS END UP BEING ABSTRACTIONS OF MANY FLOWERS”

1. Hey, Bari! We couldn’t be more excited to release your collection Wild Bloom! If you had to describe this collection in three words what would they be and why? Colorful, Wild and happy. Because florals and color make my heart soar and sing. 2. For those who follow you on social media, we know that you’re a floral enthusiast! What is it about flowers, besides their beauty that attracts you and continuously lets you reinvent your work? To me, flowers look like they’re doing a happy little dance. The petals fold and unfold, the stems bend and sway, and they come in all shapes and sizes. The possibilities are endless with florals. 3. To contrast the beautiful blooms in the collection you added sashiko and cross stitch blenders. What do you love about these sewing techniques and how do you think they complement Wild Bloom?

I have been a hand stitcher for ages, I love the simplicity of these stitched shapes next to the more complicated florals. 4. The free quilt pattern designed for this collection is stunning! Can you tell us all about the design? It was designed by Blair Stocker of Wise Craft Handmade. The only direction I gave her was to show the prints without cutting in tiny pieces and that it should have a fun boho feel. I love how it turned out. I think it’s a great everyday modern quilt. 5. What are some of your favorite types of flowers and which ones do you love to draw/ paint? I adore peonies. But I tend to draw from imagination rather than life. I think my flowers end up being abstractions of many flowers. 6. We all know you have a deep love for home decor! How do you plan to incorporate Wild Bloom in your home? First off, the magnolia on canvas. That is going to make some serious awesome upholstery. I’m looking for the perfect piece to put it on. Then I’m thinking pillows, throws, and I’m hoping to do my nieces room in some Wild Bloom. I’ve already got it going on in our guest room. I did the width of fabric x2 matching the pattern for a duvet cover. 7. Do you have any advice for makers who want to experiment with their home decor but they’re afraid of color and bold prints?

Practice. It’s all about testing things out and seeing what you like. My other advice is keeping with a palette you love and repeating those colors throughout a room balancing the pattern and color as you go. But mostly, experiment and have fun! 8. What would you love to see sewists making with Wild Bloom? Dresses for girls and women, home decor, and fun quilts that show off the prints. I’m cutting large pieces so you can see the designs.

Colorful, Wild

9. Which print was the most fun to design and which one was the most challenging one to put together? Flower shower was both the most fun and challenging. I first drew it in pen on watercolor paper, then I added in the color with watercolor pencils. After that I scanned it and reduced the colors and changed them for screen printing and put it into repeat. The repeat was the most challenging part with its dual toned background. 10. Whether you paint flowers from your imagination or from life, you always translate them into fabrics beautifully! What are some places you have visited with the most beautiful flowers? The Chicago Botanic Garden and the Desert Botanic Garden.

& Happy.
