From the director Our museum of art must be a place of experience and inspiration, and at the heart of that lies our collection. The Art Gallery of New South Wales Foundation provides lifeblood to the Gallery in supporting this core role of building our collection by acquiring exceptional works of art for our public to study and enjoy. The Foundation was established in 1983 and, through its endowment, is the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ major acquisition fund. By investing donations and bequests, the Foundation provides essential funds to support the purchase of works of art. The works that have been acquired with the support of the Foundation endowment income are now valued at over $155 million, a significant investment in our cultural heritage. I am proud of the legacy of works acquired through the Foundation and I look forward to future acquisitions that will continue to enhance our collection and exhibitions. The first acquisition was made in 1984. It was Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Three bathers 1913 which was followed by Max Beckmann’s Mother and daughter 1946. These two major 20th-century works play a crucial role in conveying the story of European modernism. To date, over 30 artworks have been acquired through the Foundation. Each is inspiring and of immense stature in the canons of art history, to name but three – Giacometti’s Standing Woman of Venice VII 1956, Cy Twombly’s spectacular triptych, Three studies from the Temeraire 1998–99 and the magnificent c13th-century Nepalese sculpture Padmapani. The Foundation has supported the Gallery in bold acquisitions such as Untitled (elongated plinths) 1998 by Rachel Whitehead acquired in 1999. This insightful acquisition ensured that the Gallery has a pivotal artwork by a leading British contemporary artist. The recent purchase of Start swimming 2008 by the North American artist Doug Aitken is unquestionably another example of forward-thinking collection development. A rigorous internal curatorial process is applied to acquiring works of art at the Gallery and proposals are only made after lengthy research and intellectual debate. This scholarship and expertise ensures that key works of art are identified, sourced and negotiated for the collection.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales’ international stature is affirmed by each addition to the collection we make through Foundation support. Not only are we building a collection of ongoing relevance, we are contributing to the cultural wealth of our state and adding to global cultural heritage. Several Foundation-supported works have featured in major exhibitions both in Australia and internationally. For example Cezanne’s Banks of the Marne c1888 was loaned to the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid for a major Cézanne retrospective in 2014 and the 14th-century Japanese scroll Taima mandala and the imposing Chinese Sui dynasty marble Standing Buddha, were pivotal in the 2001 Gallery exhibition Buddha: radiant awakening. The Foundation is key to the Gallery achieving its aims as an art museum relevant to its public in the 21st century. It is to the members of the Foundation – past, present and future – that we owe a debt of thanks in fulfilling our aims. Michael Brand Director, Art Gallery of New South Wales
