B E YO N D BLING 13 OCT 18 – 14 JAN 19 | FREE

ARE YOU READY FOR BLING! Following on from the success of Sneakerheads and Heath Ledger: A Life in Pictures, AGWA launches another street-smart Culture Juice show – this time celebrating, exploring and making jewellery and adornment. Centred on 300 State Art Collection pieces from the 1800s to today, Beyond Bling! unlocks the vaults to showcase the best, the bizarre and the most sophisticated jewels from AGWA’s historical and contemporary collections. Moving from bold and captivating wearable art to quiet and subtle, almost private, personal interventions, the show will change how you think about what jewellery is, and can be! Beyond Bling! also features capsule displays from key collectors including heritage pieces such as gold nugget jewellery from antiquarian expert Trevor Hancock; some classically restrained pieces showing the art of Georg Jensen and by contrast some jaw-dropping displays from Perth’s ,JOH PG #MJOH 4hane Pavlinovich.

SPREADING THE SPARKLE We are partnering with Curtin University’s School of Design and the Built Environment whose talented final year jewellery design students will display their graduation pieces in the Imagination Room and whose fashion graduates’ work will explode in their 2 December fashion show. We link with Fashion Council WA for essential red carpet style tips; Pride WA for a bling-tastic parade; the AGWA Foundation to acquire important new pieces for the collection; City of Perth for some ‘civic bling’ treasures, such as the impressive and historic mayoral chain of office (from 1886 and 1959); collectors, enthusiasts, and academics from the jewellery world.

On Bling Day, Sat 13 Oct, you get to meet the guest exhibitors and show off your own jewels in the Bring your Bling event, becoming a living exhibit and capturing the splendour of your jewellery on the day.

KING OF BLING

GOLDFINGER

Introducing AGWA’s honorary Jewel Thief in Residence Shane Pavlinovich

Introducing WA’s antiquarian jewel expert – Trevor Hancock

Shane is a man of many jewels and facets – collector of hundreds of sumptuous and flamboyant sparkling pieces; creator and maker of bespoke statement jewellery; bewitching and vibrant man-about-town in Perth. Passionate and knowledgeable about rococo ornamentation and gems, he is officially known on his passport as the Duke of Pearl. AGWA is delighted to welcome some of his impressive collection to the Gallery, to share his enthusiasm with visitors, and to install him, appropriately on Bling Day, Sat 13 October, as AGWA’s King of Bling. Collector Focus Talk 12-12.30pm, 13 Oct Join Shane as he discusses his jewellery pieces on display. Bring your Bling 1-2pm, 13 Oct Bring your Bling and share with Shane why it’s special.

Trevor is the leading light, indeed a rare gem, in Australian historical jewellery and his base Trinity Antiques is the oldest antique store in any capital city of Australia. Trevor’s heart is betrothed to early Australian colonial antiquities due to their rarity and increasing demand. Australian colonial pieces are items made in Australia pre-1900s and are typically silverware, jewellery, furniture, and paintings. From its humble beginnings 37 years ago, Trinity Antiques has a distinguished history of supplying the greatest number of pieces of Australian historical jewellery to the National Gallery, National Museum, National Library, Parliament House, and many of the state galleries. Trevor will be curating a dramatic selection of nugget jewellery for the Beyond Bling! exhibition and talking at the opening day on 13 October. Trevor is one of a kind just like his store, the history it holds and the stories he tells. We are delighted to showcase his expertise and collection at AGWA. Bring your Bling Clinic 2.30-4pm, 13 Oct Join Trevor for advice and jewellery identification of your favourite pieces.

B E YO N D BLING “Jewellery is the most intimate of art forms – a bridge between our bodies and the rest of the world – the rings we wear, the necklaces, the earrings, the nose rings, the bracelets, they frame us, add accents. And they bring the eye of a friend, lover – or even a stranger – to rest upon us. For us, jewellery exists in the domain of desire, a heightened form of non-verbal communication that flickers through the private and public realm. These exhibits highlight a body of works that provokes thought and delight, with themes ranging from the organic, to the architectural to the use of everyday items, to work created to keep private memory intact – and to draw the eyes of the crowd.” AGWA Curator of Contemporary Design and International Art, Robert Cook
