Andy Warhol’s Little Electric Chair The work is a vibrant red Little Electric Chair acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas, 1964/65 from Warhol’s Death and Disaster series. Warhol used source material from newspapers and police photo archives for this series which subjects included suicides, car accidents, etc. Warhol’s Little Electric Chair is based on a press photo from the 1950s of the death chamber at Sing Sing prison, shown to the right, where Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for conspiring to pass atomic secrets to the Russians during World War II. Using this press photograph, Warhol applied a single layer of monochrome color before printing the silkscreen. For the series of Little Electric Chair works the artist used a range of colors – from garish cadmium yellow and orange, to sugary lavenders and pinks – to create a disturbing contrast with the sinister subject matter printed on top. The finest examples from the Little Electric Chair series, including Alice Cooper’s, include a crisply screened sign which reads “Silence.”
Alice Cooper’s Relationship with Andy Warhol Alice Cooper became friendly with Andy Warhol in the early I970’s. “I met Andy Warhol when I lived in New York City, and it was just when I was becoming the scourge of rock n’ roll and of course that attracted the whole Warhol crowd. You’d go to clubs like Max’s Kansas City and they were all there and we’d hang out. It was a very surreal time. Andy was always taking photographs of everyone or making movies of everyone. He had a whole crowd of people around him all the time, and my girlfriend Cindy Lang was really connected into that group,” said Cooper. Photographs of the two hanging out together are included in The Andy Warhol museum along with a Christmas card sent from Alice to Andy. Alice Cooper is also mentioned in the Andy Warhal Diaries. Alice Cooper’s girlfriend model Cindy Lang was a known regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory. In fact, she was interviewed and on the cover of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine in December 1973. Alice Cooper used an electric chair on stage as part of his shock rock act. Cindy Lang purchased the red Little Electric Chair as an unstretched canvas directly from the Factory as a gift for Alice.

Stanley and Mikki Weithorn Collection Larsen Art Auction is pleased to present for sale 55 works from the collection of Stanley and Mikki Weithorn. The sale, headlined by Emma Amos’s stunning, fabric-bordered painting Time Will Tell 1998, (est. $80,000/120,000) includes paintings, sculptures, editions, and works on paper from important outsider, emerging, mid-career, and established global artists. Over three decades of discriminate collecting, the Weithorns built a dynamic collection of socially conscious contemporary art with an emphasis on Black artists. Rather than follow market trends, the Weithorns collected based on “a sense of commitment to the society in which [they] live,” privileging artists of color and nonconventional, boundary-pushing works (Stanley Weithorn, quoted in Jewish News AZ, 2005). From Kerry James Marshall’s unflinching eulogy for US civil rights martyrs in Memento 1997, (est. $10,000-15,000), to Claudette Schreuders’s ambivalent figurative attempts to carve out a legible identity in post-apartheid South Africa Untitled, 2000, (est. $1,000/2,000), to Benny Andrews caustic social critique of the brutally mundane in Brother’s Keeper (est. $8,000/12,000), the collection embraces complexity, difficulty, and that which is not easily categorized or settled. Above all, the Weithorn’s collection demonstrates a deep belief in—and commitment to—the ethical, intellectual, and societal importance of art. Works from the Weithorn collection can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, ASU Art Museum, and the Phoenix Art Museum.

Some lots may be offered subject to a “reserve” or confidential minimum price below which the lot will not be sold. In such instances the auctioneer will exercise the reserve by bidding on behalf of the Consignor. The auctioneer may open bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the Consignor up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. In no event shall the reserve exceed the low estimate listed in the catalog. The Gallery, at its discretion and as a disinterested party, may execute orders or absentee bids as a courtesy to clients who are not present at the auction. The Gallery reserves the right to purchase property on its own behalf or on behalf of another party.
11.
The Gallery makes no representations whatsoever that the Buyer of a work of art will acquire any reproduction rights thereto.
12.
These Terms and Conditions of Sale and procedures of auction as well as the Buyer’s and Gallery’s rights and obligations herein shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of Arizona.
