LARSEN ART AUCTION 15

Over the course of her career, Françoise Gilot—a major force in postwar French painting known for her careful, semi-cubist compositions and brilliant sense of color—has turned repeatedly to the portrait. These two portraits, done forty-four years apart, demonstrate the abiding importance of the mode to Gilot: under her hand, portraiture (especially self-portraiture) becomes a way of exploring memory, relation, and representation. In a studio visit video interview for the Tate, there is a moment when Gilot looks directly into the camera, smiles, and says, “when you know a person, you react. You react with your own personality,” (TateShots, December 2013). These understated, graphic portraits are just such a reaction.

Arman (Armand Pierre Fernandez) (French, American, 1928–2005)

2000

Arman’s first Accumulation works from 1959 were inspired by Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters, and the idea of the readymade. Arman arranged identical, mass-produced objects in repeated patterns to defamiliarize and recontextualize the everyday materials. Arman’s paintbrush accumulations pushed this conceptual practice even further. In Untitled Paint Brushes (2000), Arman returns late in his career to his accumulative practice of the sixties. The attentive viewer will quickly realize that there has been a development, a retrospective deepening. In this work, the chip brushes and paint strokes are multitiered, layered, attached to both the canvas and the plexiglass that obscures the canvas. There is play between light, shadow, and the striking international Klein Blue paint color. Indeed, this work might be read as an homage to Arman’s friend and collaborator Yves Klein: the memory of Nouveau Réalisme , and the memory of a friend.

For more than five decades, Fred and Gail Tieken’s lives were centered around music, art and design. Fred was a musician, recording engineer and producer, as well as a concert promoter. For 16 years he fronted his own bands. Gail joined him in those endeavors, and they built a music publishing and talent management business together. Fred was also the creative director at a leading Chicago design firm before he and Gail started their own firm with Fred as the artist-in-residence and Gail managing the business. They received more than 200 national and international awards in the field of design.

Later in life, Fred used those creative juices to create his own art, influenced by the energy of street art, naming artists such as Basquiat, Schnabel and Baselitz as his inspiration. You will note that throughout the auction many of the works are from the Estate of Fred and Gail Tieken, which provide a glimpse into their diverse interests and their wonderful art collection, which we are honored to be offering.

David Hockney (British, b. 1937)

100

David Hockney is a titan of contemporary art and is included in every major museum across the globe. In 2010 Hockney began using the iPad, as he stated he could draw with a stylus and get more details in than his prior use of the iPhone. The iPad and stylus are to Hockney what silverpoint and paper were to Dürer: a way of recording, interpreting, understanding, and carefully expressing the world through drawing. For over a decade, Hockney has been producing digital drawings that range from lush fauvist landscapes to bright portraits, still lives and social commentaries. In Life (2012), Hockney has redrawn his favorite version of Munch’s iconic The Scream and placed it above an imaginary greeting card, hated by parents and doctors alike. The drawing fabulously juxtaposes art history and social criticism, showing off the humor that shines in so much of Hockney’s work.

Born in Nagoya Japan, Jun Kaneko moved to California in the 1960s to study under the postwar ceramicists Fred Marer, Peter Voulkos, and Paul Soldner, who encouraged Kaneko’s early explorations of abstract and non-utilitarian ceramics. Kaneko moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1990, where he established a warehouse studio with the capacity to handle increasingly large-scale ceramic sculpture. Kaneko works in reaction to the physical and temporal limitations of his material—ceramics demand patience, and harmony demands a delicate touch. Kaneko’s Dango (“dumpling”) sculptures are among his most recognized series of works of which this one.

Untitled (Winged Vase)

Betty Woodman (American, 1930–2018)

Betty Woodman was a leading figure in contemporary American ceramics. In Untitled (Winged Vase), Woodman investigates the expressive qualities of the vase and of clay itself. One face of the sculpture remains fully intact; its shape suggests the classical Greek amphora. On the other side of the sculpture, though, the amphora seems to have split, stretched, and begun a slow collapse. No matter the viewing angle, the sculpture is unmistakably figurative, evoking Icarus’s melting wings, a taxidermy bird, and the belly of Venus of Willendorf.

Fritz Scholder (Native American, 1937–2005)

In this painting, a major work from the Mystery Woman series (1980s-90s), Scholder’s expressive and articulate use of paint is on full display. The shadowy, claustrophobic setting recalls the work of Francis Bacon and Francisco Goya, two of Scholder’s early inspirations, while the posture of the central figure suggests something of the classical bather, à la Courbet or Degas.

Mystery Woman in Corner, 1991

Perhaps best known for his breakout 1970s “Indian” series, Fritz Scholder incorporated elements from pop art, abstract expressionism, and color-field painting into his inimitable postmodern style. Primarily, Scholder considered himself a colorist and an expressionist.

In Beyond the Visible Terrain: The Art of Ed Mell, Donald Hagerty writes, “because of their magnified scale and clarity, the flower paintings seem endowed with panoramic space beyond the frame. In fact, the term flowerscapes may be appropriate for these images that capture not only the transparent tissue and texture of the blossoms but bestow them with the attributes of landscapes.” In his own words, Mell says that the defining feature of his flower paintings is GLOW Iris is an outstanding example of Mell’s flower paintings in which the glowing, landscape quality of his work is fully expressed. Iris is a paradigm of Mell’s post-1988 painting and represents the rare opportunity to acquire a work of tremendous caliber and indisputable skill by a preeminent Southwestern artist.

Virgin of the Apocalypse, 2004

Signed and dated Luis Tapia 04, bottom Titled, bottom. $3,000 – $5,000

LARSEN ART AUCTION 139

Luis Tapia is a self-taught New Mexican sculptor known for his engagement with religious wood carving, contemporary culture, and Hispanic civil rights issues. In the early 1970s, to understand his history and culture, Tapia began carving santos , traditional Catholic devotional icons. Tapia complicates this practice in his santos by incorporating scenes of gangs, prostitution, and state-sanctioned violence. In Virgin of the Apocalypse , Tapia depicts a scene from the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation. In the sculpture the Woman of the Apocalypse, traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary stands atop a vanquished dragon, representing Satan and those who persecute a religious/cultural minority.
