152 Paul Signac (French, 1863-1935) Harbor Village with Boats, Côte d’Azure Watercolor and pencil on paper 10 1/4” x 16 1/4” Signed in pencil P. Signac, lower left $20,000 – $30,000 Provenance: Private Collector, Scottsdale, Arizona passed by family descent from Ernst Wolff (1916-2014); passed by family descent from Wilhelm Willy Wolff (1871-1933) and Rosel Rosa Stern Wolff (1881-1935), Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Paul Victor Jules Signac, born in Paris in the autumn of 1863, was a foundational neo-impressionist and pointillist painter. After viewing an exhibition of Claude Monet’s work, Signac, who was trained as an architect, began to pursue a career in painting. He would go on to work alongside such artists as Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and most influentially, Georges Seurat. Signac quickly became a devotee of divisionism (pointillism), a theory of painting in which small, individually colored dots of paint are applied to a canvas; when viewed, these individual colors blend into a single harmonious image. Each summer, Signac left Paris for Saint-Tropez in order to sail throughout the harbor towns of France and the Mediterranean. These coastal scenes stand as a dominant theme in Signac’s oeuvre—many of his most important works depict the seaside towns of Europe shining in summer light. During his travels, Signac worked in watercolors to quickly render images en plein air and capture specific qualities of light at certain times of day. He would later work from these studies to paint large-scale oils. Harbor Village with Boats, Côte d’Azure is a quintessential Signac watercolor: gestural lines, a limited palette, and perfectly placed dabs of color come together to create a dazzling French landscape.

All but two of the photographs in this sale are from the collection of Jim Dunn and Pam Ryan. The collection includes mostly landscapes with a few exceptions of portraits by world renown photographers. The quote below exemplifies the collecting habits of the couple and the inspiration behind their collection. “I grew up in the rolling foothills of the western Sierra Nevada, not far from Yosemite. I was surrounded by beautiful country, but as a youngster I didn’t take much notice. That changed when I first saw the black and white photographs of Minor White in a gallery in Carmel. His images were like a lightning rod for me — connecting emotions I didn’t know I possessed to the land where I grew up. That emotional connection remains at my core and forms the basis for my interest in collecting photographs and other forms of art. Today my collection includes not only well-known photographers but also lesser-known but very talented photographers whose paths I have crossed and whose work continues to inspire me.” — Jim Dunn

In no event shall the reserve exceed the low estimate listed in the catalog.
