Gerald Peters Gallery, New York, is pleased to present an exhibition of recent work by Lisa Corinne Davis. This will be Davis’s first solo exhibition with Gerald Peters Gallery, but her fourteenth in New York. Over the course of her distinguished career, Davis has painted abstractions, which adhere to the surface of the picture plane. Layered grids constitute the foundation of her compositions, which are punctuated by explosions of biomorphic color. The conjunction of these two distinctive approaches creates the tension in her paintings. Working with an aesthetic best described as the information sublime or a proliferation of data in our Digital Age, her paintings are refreshing and contemporary. Systems of order, bold patterning and map-like tropes signal the vast human imprint on the world around us. Yet, her paintings are never rigid. Rather they are energized by the chaos, pandemonium and recklessness of painted sections that defy the order of the grid. Davis’s interest in the tension between the grid and chaos is both a formal and conceptual concern. Like an enthralling story that is able to supersede the meaning of each word, her paintings traffic in narrative. Meant to be legible, they narrate her sociopolitical concerns as an African-American woman of mixed heritage working in a patriarchal art community. Her patterned grid-work makes transparent the societal constructs that sideline people, who are not easily categorized. Davis works at the intersection of systems of framing and chance. Her imagery is a deluge of biological and geographical data, which are alleviated by bursts of bright spontaneous graffiti-style color. Davis is the recipient of numerous awards including The Louis Comfort Tiffany grant, a National Endowment for the Arts' Visual Artist Fellowship, and two New York Foundation for the Arts, Visual Arts Fellowships. In addition, Davis has taught art for the past twenty-five years at Parsons School of Design, Cooper Union School of Art, Yale University, and is currently a Professor at Hunter College in New York. Her work is represented in collections in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Represented by Gerald Peters Gallery, New York, NY, Galerie Gris, Hudson, NY and The Mayor Gallery, London, Davis lives and works in Brooklyn and Hudson NY. Please join us for the opening reception with the artist, February 26th, 2015.
