The elated bursary recipient, Emmanuel Shozi “It's never too late to pursue your dreams and live a #betterlife." These sentiments are echoed by a 20-yearold security guard after he was awarded a bursary for over R15 000. Courtesy of INTEC College and East Coast Radio's Big Favour, the lucky recipient, Emmanuel Shozi, was awarded the bursary to first complete his National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and thereafter further his tertiary education in draughting. Upon receiving his bursary, Emmanuel decided to give up his job as a security guard and pursue his lifelong dream. At the age of 17, Emmanuel was forced to seek employment in order to support his family financially. With his matric incomplete, he sought work as a security officer to pay for his studies. It was not long after thereafter that INTEC College and East Coast Radio (ECR) identified Emmanuel as a deserving individual, following the moving letter he had sent in to DJ Damon Beard's 'The Big Favour' initiative. In the letter, Emmanuel expressed his eagerness and passion to achieve his education goals.

STUDY TIPS FOR THE DISTANCE LEARNER Anybody will admit that distance-learning is no easy feat. It requires an amazing amount of commitment, focus and attention, but with the right attitude and the end-goal in sight, you will ace your studies and exams. Here are some easy to implement study tips that will help you get the edge when it comes to distance learning. Establish a study timetable Ÿ Begin inputting all academic dates into your calendar (Assignment due dates, semester breaks, study week and exam periods). Ÿ Allocate study time for each subject. Ÿ Schedule in time for your other commitments and activities aside from study (Work, sport, social, family) Ÿ Place the timetable in a visible location. Ÿ Let friends and family know about your schedule so that they understand your commitments and time restrictions. Create a study environment Ÿ If you are studying at home then try and have a space dedicated to your studies, a bit like a minioffice as this will help you have an organised approach to your studies. Ÿ If studying at home really isn't an option then consider studying at the local library or a quiet café.
Think about when you are most effective. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Base your study times on this. Ÿ Consider how much time you can allocate in one sitting. Do you work best in short, sharp bursts, or do you prefer a slower pace? Ÿ Make sure you allocate regular breaks - 20 minutes used effectively is better than three unproductive hours.
Ÿ
Recognise when you are procrastinating Ÿ Start by getting rid of distractions. Some things are easier to get rid of than others; put your mobile phone on silent, log off Facebook, don't open your email - FOCUS on the task at hand. Ÿ Remember that the more you put something off, the more stressful it will become down the road. Once you make a start on a task you'll immediately reduce your anxiety about it. Reward yourself along the way Ÿ Let's not pretend - online study can be challenging. You will need to be motivated, disciplined and, most importantly, believe in yourself. It helps to recognise every achievement, from the little ones right through to the big successes. It might be completing an assignment by the due date, receiving a good mark, improving your grades or attempting something totally new. You are the captain of your ship. Sometimes you might need to take a step back and just breathe. Independent learning is challenging, but it is worth it - and if you believe in yourself, you can do it! 8 Ways To
Everyone wants to save money, whether it's by restricting yourself that R20 cup of coffee a day or putting off a vacation. We all have different attempts at saving. A good savings plan is just as good as money earned. Here are some fantastic money-saving tips that will give help you save in your day-to-day life. 1. Eliminate Your Debt If you are trying to save money through budgeting but still carry a large debt burden, start with the debt. Begin by adding up how much you spend paying your debt each month. Once you are free from paying interest on your
Save Your Money debt, that money can easily be put into savings. 2. Goals For Saving One of the best ways to save money is by seeing exactly what it is that you are saving for. If you need motivation, set saving targets along with a timeline to make it easier to save. Do you want to study in two years? Now you have a target and know what you will need to save each month to achieve your goal. 3. Pay Yourself First Set up an auto debit from your account to your savings account each payday. Whether it's R100 every two weeks or R1000 a
month, don't cheat yourself out of a healthy long-term savings plan. 4.Stop Smoking No, it's certainly not easy to quit, but if you smoke a pack every day that amounts to nearly R12000 a year you can have in savings, if you quit. 5.Take a 'Staycation' Though the term may be trendy, the thought behind it is solid. Instead of spending thousands on airline tickets for national travel, look for fun vacation spots that are close to home. If you can't drive the distance, look for cheap flights in your region.
6. Spend to Save Let's face it, energy costs seldom go down over time, so take charge now and weatherise your home. Call your electrical company and ask for an energy audit or find a certified contractor who can give you a home energy efficiency review. You could save thousands in housing costs over time. 7. Pack Your Lunch If buying lunch at work costs R50, but bringing lunch from home costs less than R15, then over the course of a year you can create an emergency fund or make a significant contribution to a college plan or retirement fund. 8. Annualise Your Spending Do you pay about R50 a week for snacks at the vending machine at your office? That's R2400 you're removing from your budget for soda and snacks each year. Suddenly, that habit adds up to a substantial sum. Happy savings! Cited from www.regions.com

Body And Mind Therapy For 2016 We all know that exams and studying can add to the pressure that you experience. If you choose a distance learning programme, manage your own time and schedule, it is important that you are able to get your mind and body right, so that you are able to give it your best shot. Here are a few helpful tips to get you started on your journey: 1) Set goals: Whatever it is that you plan on doing in terms of your fitness, have some idea of what you would like to achieve. Get out a diary or a notebook, write down your commitment to new goals from a health point of view. Make commitments and appointments that suit your life and schedule. If you are hard-pressed for time, you would rather commit to fifteen minutes a day jogging through a park, rather than doing nothing at all about it. 2) Eat a good breakfast: Having a good nutritious start to your day helps fire up the engines of your mind and fuel your body for the day ahead. Do a little internet-guided research and check out all of the awesome, healthy combinations that there are out there. What really helps is having a good breakfast combo of something that is a complex carbohydrate like oatmeal combined with a good source of protein like a poached or scrambled egg. This combination has a good satiety factor, which essentially means that you will stay fuller for longer.
3) Stay hydrated: The importance of water cannot be overemphasized. Get at least six tall glasses of water a day. Water has been proven to help you focus, improve your powers of concentration, help with brain fatigue, as well as help maintain mental and emotional equilibrium. Let's face it, as a student you are most definitely going to need that. 4) Get outdoors:Breathe the fresh air. Take in the sights and the sounds of the world around you. Remember, that while it is good to take your academic career seriously, you still have to be a well-rounded student and fit yourself into the context of the world around you. Besides, the mind works well once you've had a chance to dust off the cob-webs and you have given yourself some room to breathe.
5) Take the time to relax: Schedule breaks. Make sure you get that much needed 'me-time' or selftime so that you are able to flex the capacity of your mind. If you feel at any point that your mind is overloaded with information you may be tempted to explode or cut and run. Avoid such pressure-cooker situations, by acknowledging that you are a human being that doesn't just deserve a break, but needs one. 6) Connect with friends and family: Now that you are engaged in distance learning, you will find that you are not hemmed in by the structures of typical classes and timetables. You will have a bit more time to connect with family and friends. Don't take them for granted, they are in fact the strongest support system that you will ever have. 7) Find ways to workout at home: If you're on a budget, you may find it difficult to have a gym membership and get state -of -the -art training. It's time to take a load off and find ways to workout at home. 8) Rope in a friend: Yes, the idea of getting fit, on top of studies and possibly a part-time work arrangement, might seem like a bit too much to handle, but what could be more fun than if you did so with company? Why not take a friend along, make it a social occasion and make it feel less like a chore and more like fun. Plan activities, change up the energy and plan your lives while you're at it, you will be glad you did. You should definitely be able to live a life that is happy, content and balanced while you're going about your studies and preparing for your dream career.
