Studio 4.2 Stroud Care Retirement Village Final year project at the University of Bath. Stroud Care Retirement Village is a community daycare centre with communal facilities (for the residents within the village and its surrounding area) and providing residential units defined by the level of care required for the resident. The village is a landscape-led design: communal areas and living spaces are adjoined to a garden and leads into the different parts of the village.

Quiet Garden One of the many gardens in the village to allow residents to enjoy different quality of gardens.

The village is divided into two parts: The brick community day care building that leads the public into its shared communal spaces such as the cafe and care services and the residential fingers that is connected to the gardens that are linked to the communal areas.

Social Gardens The idea of gardens as a planned green space to encourage the growth of nature and to be inspired by nature. However, the idea of gardens as a social space, to nurture healthy relationships between people and nature is one of the design approaches I’ve come to follow.

A Place to Socialise Gardens are used as a space to socialise, to liven up the experience of being in a social garden.

An Extension to the Home Exploring the idea that the individual carries his or her personal life to the external gardens.

A Place to Relax A spatial hierachy would be made available within the proposal for public, semi-public and private areas in the gardens.

Community Day Care An entrance building/ gateway into the retirement village that would serve as the centre for activities for residents in the village as well as residents from the surrounding area. The day care centre would house majority of the communal rooms such as the sitting area, dining hall, physiotherapy room, occupational therapy room, etc.

Individual Living Accommodation The accommodation schedule accounts for three types of individual accommodation for the retirement village. This is based on the mobility and amount of assistance required by the resident. Assisted Living - Residents who require a certain level of assistance and would be living in flats. Independent Living I - Residents who require less assistance, self-catered but close to communal facilities. Independent Living II - Residents who require less to no-assistance, self-catered and more detached.

Communal

Communal Living The organisation of living spaces in the accommodation schedule is based on the idea of communal living. Each living accommodation has a direct relationship with a common living space. However, this brings up the unique issue of providing private spaces within the scheme. Back Garden Toilet/ Bathroom

Communal Landscape One of the larger communal spaces within the scheme is the landscape gardens that has a direct relationship to the communal spaces as well as the living spaces in the scheme. Providing a variety of green spaces in the scheme allows for different activities and providing comfortable green environment for the residents to enjoy.

Studio 4.1 Bristol Temple Meads Food Market Group Project Modern society has been removed from the process of obtaining food from natural sources due to the supermarket. Thus, our Food Market aims to return to the medieval roots of the ‘Market Cross’ as a social and cultural hub, directed at promoting local and naturally resourced food products. The primary form of the building aims to reflect this social hub through means of a communal heart where the main market activities take place. The two flanking buildings seperate the secondary spaces into both public and private amenities. The form of the roof acts as a visual connection between these entities whilst also driving the passive environmental nature of the market square beneath.

Current work experience Keep Architecture Currently employed with Keep Architecture in Bristol. I am currently producing a series of diagrams as well as informative sections to illustrate street typologies in a residential masterplan in Gloucestershire.

Previous work experience Grant Associates Third year work placement with Grant Associates - an award winning landscape architecture and urban design practice based in Bath. Whilst being employed at Grant Associates, I created visuals for competition submissions as well as working closely with experienced landscape architects on urban design masterplanning projects in various regions of South East Asia.

Previous work experience T. R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) Second year work placement with T.R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn Bhd in Malaysia was a rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to work with Dr Ken Yeang - an eco-architect who is well-known for the green architecture ideas. Whilst at TRHY, I worked on various eco-masterplans for competitions as well as multi-use 60 and 80 storey towers. I produced visuals as well as designing the submissions boards for the competitions.
