BeforetheacclaimedBindusurfacedinSayedHaiderRaza’swork,hebeganasalandscapeartist.Hisearliestworkswere composedofexpressionistlandscapeswhichgraduallyevolvedtorigidandgeometricrepresentationsofFrenchtownsand villagesfollowinghismovetoParis.

Intheearly1960s,Raza’sexposuretotheNewYorkSchoolofpaintersandtoAbstractExpressionismmarkedashiftinhis paintings.HebegantointegratevitalelementsofhisIndianheritageandmemoriesintohispaintings.Rootedinhischildhood memoriesoflifegrowingupclosetothedenseforestofMadhyaPradesh,hisworkfusedsymbolicabstractformsintoa powerfulexpressionofmoodandatmosphereoftheIndiannight.Raza’sthemeremainedonlandscapebuthislinesbegan toblur,reflectinghisengagementwiththenon-representational.Colourbegantodominatehiswork,especiallyblack,which forhimwasthemothercolourfromwhichotherhueswereborn.Majorityofthepaintingfromthisperiodwasemerging fromdarkness,crepuscularandalmosthallucinatory.Hestartedshowingthemoreintangibleaspectsofalandscaperather thanmimeticrepresentation.Insteadofthephysicalattributes,hedeftlymanipulatedcolourandlighttofocusonthe emotionasceneevoked.

ThepresentlotrepresentstheculminationofthisperiodofexperimentationinS.HRaza’scareer,hemasterfullyusedan emotive,largelymonochromaticpalettetorecreatetheelusivemoodbroughtonbythedescentofnight.Theauraofthe nightissuggestedbyestablishingamostluminousindigo,lightenoughfortheblackofthenighttobedefined,yetdark enoughtoestablishmystique,andforthewhitetocontrastagainstit.Thereisnoapparentsourceoflightyetthetextureof thepaintlendssubtleluminescence,emphasizingthedarknessandtheirallusiontothememoryandthemood.

Closelyattunedwithsociopoliticalandscientificdevelopments,F.N.Souzawasdeeplyaffectedbythewarsfrom yesteryearsandwasprofoundlyagitatedoverissuesfacinghumanity,especiallythedevelopmentofnuclearweapons. Thispreoccupationwastranslatedinhisworkswherehewouldfrequentlyportraythesubjectresultinginportraitstudies of'mutant'headswherehedepictedimagesofmanafteranuclearwar.Thesestudies,bizarreinconcept,becamemore grotesqueandincreasinglydistortedastheartistfeltcivilisationdrawingclosertoitsdestruction.

Thecurrentlotisdepictedliberallywithfacialfeatures,usingnumerouseye-likeholesandtrunk-likenosesplaced haphazardlywithinthefacemakingthecreaturelookmorelikeanextraterrestrialbeingthanactualman.Butwhilethe subjecthardlyresembleahumanbeing,Souzaincorporatedanthropomorphiccharacteristictoinsinuatemutation.This abilitytodisorganiseanddistortthehumanfacewithoutresortingtototalabstractionorlosingavitalaspectofthe portraituredemonstratesSouza'smasterlyskillasadraughtsmanandhishighlydistinctivestyle.Byconsciously abandoningnaturalism,Souzaliberatedhimselffromobjectiverepresentationandimbueshisworksrifewithsocial commentaryandcriticism.

Althoughtherehadalwaysbeensomecontentionregardingtheartist'sdepictionofHindudeities,hisidentityasanartistwas Indianthroughandthrough.Thisisapparentinhisprodigiouscanvases,anall-encompassingIndianidentitydepictingthe manyfacesofIndianculture,fromthesacredtothemundane.Here,Husain'smasterfuluseoflineslendsdynamismand energytothepicture.Thedeitywasdefinedusingboldlineswithbrightjeweledcolors-atestamenttotheartist'sskillasa draughtsmanandacolorist.

3.3 TheBuyerundertakes:

•toinspectandsatisfyhimselfpriortotheAuctionastothe conditionanddescriptionoftheProperty(ies);

•torelyonhisownjudgmentastowhethertheProperty(ies) matchesitsdescription; and

•tonotrelyonanillustrationofanyProperty(ies)giveninthe Catalogue

3.4. Neither Artiananoranyofitsaffiliates, agents, representatives, employeesordirectorsshallbeliableforerrorsoromissionsinanyof therepresentationsmadeintheAuctionCatalogueorotherwisewith respecttoauthenticity, description, orconditionofanyProperty(ies) forsalethroughtheAuction.

4.1. ArtianaprovidesanassuranceonbehalfoftheSellerthateach artworkofferedatauction, isagenuineworkoftheartistlisted. Artianaguaranteestheauthenticityofsuchartworkforaperiodof sixmonthsfromtheauctionclosingdate Authenticityinrelationto artworksshallmeancomplianceoftheartworkwiththedescription providedonthe website, particularlywith referencetothename oftheartist, title(ifany)oftheartwork, date, theschoolofart (ifmentioned), dimensions, medium, etc.

Intheunlikely eventthatwithinsixmonthsfromthecloseofan auction, itisproved bytheBuyer, tothe reasonablesatisfactionof Artiana, thattheitem wasnotauthenticandif, inArtiana’sopinion, thiswouldhavesignificantlyimpactedthe WinningBidfortheitem, Artianashallbeentitledto rescindthesale Insuchan event, the SellerwillbeliabletorefundthepaymentfortheitemtotheBuyer,

through Artiana.Theitem inquestion willsubsequently be returned totheSeller.

Allsuchclaimswillbehandledonacase-by-casebasis, andinthe caseofanauthenticityclaimin relationtoanartwork, examinable proof, clearlydemonstratingthattheitemisnotauthentic, willbe required. Suchexaminableproofshouldbeprovided byanestablished andacknowledgedauthority Artiana’sdecision, with regardstosuch claims, shallbefinalandbinding.

4.2 Theaboveguarantee giveninclause4.1shallbesubjecttothe followingconditions:

•TheclaimismadebytheBuyerasregisteredwithArtiana(the benefitoftheclaimisnotassignabletoanysubsequentownersor otherswhomayacquireorhaveaninterestinanyoftheProperties)

•ThePropertyisreturnedinthesameconditionthatit wasinatthe timeofdeliveryofthePropertytotheBuyer

•TheProperty wasindisputablypurchasedthroughArtiana

4.3. InthecaseofPropertieswhichhavebeencategorised by Artiana asPreciousObjects,Artianaprovidesanassurance, onbehalfofthe Seller, thateachpieceshallcomplywithcharacteristicsorfeatures mentionedintheDescriptionofthePropertyintheAuction CatalogueforaslongasthePropertyisinthepossessionofArtiana. Allcoloredstonesunlesscertifiedmayormaynotbetreatedfor enhancements. ItisthereforeadvisableforBuyersorpotentialBuyers ofsuchProperties, toinspectthePropertypriortoBiddingorprior toshipmentorBuyerpickupfromArtiana.

Intheunlikely eventthatduringsuchinspection, theBuyerisableto provetothe reasonablesatisfactionof ArtianathatthePropertydoes notmatchthedetailsintheDescription, andif, in Artiana’sopinion, Biddersbeing awareofsucherrororomission wouldhaveBid significantlylessthantheactualSalePrice,Artianashallbeentitledto rescindthesaleandtheSellerwillbeliableto refundtotheBuyerthe SalePricepaidfortheProperty; and Artianashallhand overthe PropertytotheSelleruponrefundoftheSalePricepaidtohimfor theProperty Once Artianaobtainsthe refundedamountfromthe Seller, itshallforwardthesametotheBuyer Thisguaranteewillnot beapplicablewherethePropertyisbeingshippedtotheBuyer byArtiana.

4.4. InthecaseofPropertiessuchasantiquitiesoritemsofhistorical interestwhichhavebeencategorisedbyArtianaasCulturalArtifacts, Artianaprovidesanassurance, onbehalfoftheSeller, thateachobject ofantiquarianorhistoricalinterestorsignificancehasbeenacquired withoutviolatinganylocalorinternationallaws.

Intheunlikely eventthatitisprovedthattheacquisition, provenance and/or ownershipofsuchCultural Artifactsofferedatour Auction issubjecttoalegaldispute, theBuyershall keep Artianaindemnified fromanysuchlegalproceedings.

4.5. Inallcases Artiana retainsthe righttoconsultwith, atthe expenseoftheBuyer, uptotworecognizedexpertsinthefield (suchexpertsbeingmutuallyacceptabletoArtianaandtheBuyer), toexaminethePropertyunderquestionbeforedecidingtorescind thesaleandoffertherefundundertheaboveguarantee Theopinion oftheexpertsshallnotbebindingon Artiana.

4.6. IntheeventoftheSeller’sfailuretorefundtheproceedsasstated inthisclause, theBuyershall returnthePropertyto Artianaand authoriseArtianaasitsagenttoinitiatelegalproceedingsagainstthe Seller Anysuchstepstakenorlegalproceedingsinstituted by Artiana, againsttheSeller, shallbeatthecostoftheBuyerandArtiana’s liabilityshallbelimitedasperClause5.1.

5.1. Artianahasanobligationto refundtheSalePricetotheBuyer onlyuponrecoveryofsuchamountsfromtheSellerandinthe circumstancesdescribedinClause4above(AuthenticityGuarantee). TheBuyerindemnifiesArtianafromanynon-recoveryofsuch amountsandagreesthattheyshallnotholdArtianaresponsiblein casesuchamountsarenot recoverablefromtheSeller Artiana providesinsurancecoverageonsoldLotsforsevendaysafterthe Closing Timeoftheauction Afterthatperiod, oronceaLothasbeen collected(whicheverisearlier), theLotwillbeentirelyatthebuyer’s risk. Damages, lossesorlossin valueofanyartworks(including frames)incurredduringshippingandtransitarenotcoveredasper theinsurancepolicytaken by Artiana. IncasetheBuyeroptsfor transitinsurancecoveragearrangedforbyArtianabyanyoftheir insuranceproviders,Artianashallnotentertainanydirectclaimsfor damageorlossduringshippingandtransitandthese wouldhaveto bedirectedtosuchinsuranceproviders; Subjecttotheauthenticity guaranteeabove, neither Artiana’ssuppliersnor Artiana, noranyof Artiana’semployeesoragents, shallbe responsible, eitherforthe correctnessofanystatementsastotheauthorship, origin, date, age, attributesorgenuinenessofanyPropertyinthesale, orforany mistakesintheDescription, orforanyfaultsordefectsinthe Properties, orforanyotheractoromission, whatsoever Artianaoffers noguaranteeorwarrantyotherthanthelimitedassurancecontained intheauthenticityguaranteeabove.

5.2. Itisstatedandagreedthatthe rescissionofthesaleandthe refundofthetotalSalePricepaid bytheBuyeristhesole remedy thatmaybesought byaBuyer, andsuch remedyisexclusiveandin lieuofanyother remedywhichmayotherwisebe availableunderlaw. Artianashallnotbeliableforanyincidentalorconsequentialdamages incurredorclaimed.

AllcontentofthePrint AuctionCatalogue, eCatalogueandonthe WebsiteandMobileApplicationarecopyrightprotectedinfavourof Artiana Alltrademarks, names, brandnames, etc usedinthePrint AuctionCatalogueandonthe WebsiteandMobileApplicationare trademarksofArtiana Anyrightsnotexpressly grantedhereinare reserved. Noimage, illustrationorwrittenmaterialmaybeusedor requiredwithoutthepriorwrittenpermissionofArtiana Artianaand theSeller(s)makeno representationor warrantythattheBuyerofa Propertywillacquireanycopyrightorother reproduction rightsinit.

7.1. Artianamay validlyservetheBidder/Buyerwithlegalnotice, if required, undertheseConditionsofSale by:

•SendinganemailtotheemailaddressdisclosedbytheBidder/ Buyerto Artiana; or

•SendingacouriertotheaddressdisclosedbytheBidder/Buyer toArtiana.

7.2. Suchlegalnoticeshallbedeemedtohavebeenproperlyserved: •Inthecaseofemailtransmission-onthedateofthetransmission; or

BornonJune30,1923toafamilyofcalligraphers,SyedSadequainAhmedNaqvialso oftenreferredtoasSadequain,wasaPakistaniartist,bestknownforhisskillsasa calligrapherandapainter.Heisconsideredasoneofthefinestpaintersandcalligraphers Pakistanhaseverproduced.Hewasalsoapoet,writinghundredsofruba?iyatinthestyle ofOmarKhayyamandSarmadKashani.Inlate1940shejoinedtheProgressiveWriters andArtistsMovement.HistruetalentwasdiscoveredbyHuseynShaheedSuhrawardy whobroughtSadequainintothelimelight.HealsospentsometimeinParisaugmenting hisskills.Sadequainreceivedmuchpraiseforhiscalligraphicstyle,whichiswidely considerediconicbymanycriticsofSouthAsianart.Sadequainwaspartofabroader IslamicartmovementthatemergedindependentlyacrossNorthAfricaandpartsofAsia inthe1950sandknownasthehurufiyahartmovement.Hurufiyahreferstotheattempt byartiststocombinetraditionalartforms,notablycalligraphyasagraphicelementwithinacontemporaryartwork. Sadequainisapioneerofthestyle,bringingcalligraphyintoamainstreamartform,andinfluencingsubsequent generationsofPakistaniartists.Sadequainwasthemostprolificpainterintheperiodfollowingtheindependenceof Pakistanin1947.Hewasconstantlyatworkandheworkedonlargescale.Herepeatedlystatedthathewasnotinterested indecoratingdrawingroomsofrichandpowerful.Heworkedonlargemuralsforpublicbuildings,symbolicofthe collectivelabourofhumanity,andhisworkwasmostlydonatedtothepublic.Sadequaininhisownwordswasprimarily apainteroffigureswithallegoricalsignificance.HepassedawayonFebruary10,1987inKarachi,Pakistan.

BorninKolkata,SaktiBurmangraduatedfromtheGovernmentCollegeofArtsandCrafts,Kolkata,in 1956andthenwentontostudyattheEcoleNationaleSuperieuredesBeauxArtsinParis,where,in1956, hewonthePrixdesEtrangers.Someofthemostrecentsoloshowsofhisworkincludearetrospectiveat theLalitKalaAkademi,NewDelhi,JehangirArtGallery,Mumbai,VictoriaMemorialHall,Kolkataand MaisondeI’Unesco,in2008.Burman’sworkshavealsobeenfeaturedatvariousotherinternationalgallery exhibitions;includingattheRandPalais,Paris,in1975and1994;andattheFrenchBiennalesin1963, 1965and1967.TheartistlivesandworksinParis.

SatishGujral(1925-2020)

SatishGujralwasborninPunjabandtrainedattheMayo SchoolofArtinLahore,theSirJ.J.SchoolofArt,Mumbai,and thePalacioNationaldeBelleArtsinMexico.Intheearly 1950s,heservedasanapprenticetoDiegoRivieraandDavid AlfaroSiqueiros,bothrenownedMexicanmuralists.The GovernmentofIndiahonoredhimwiththePadmaVibhushan in1998,andin2004hereceivedtheLalitKalaRatnaPuraskar fromtheLalitKalaAkademi,NewDelhi.Hehaswonthe NationalAwardthrice:twiceforpaintingandoncefor sculpture.HehasalsobeenhonoredbythestatesofDelhiand PunjabaswellasbySantiniketanwithitshighesthonor,the‘Desikottama’.Severalsoloandgroupexhibitionsofhis workshavebeenheldaroundtheworldincludinginNewDelhi,Mumbai,Kolkata,Chicago,Madrid,Tokyo,Rome,MexicoCity,andNewYork.
