Organize, count, and represent a collection of objects.
Relate multiplication to the array model.
If I organize my collection into equal groups, I can skip-count and then add the extras to find the total.
Multiplication is another way to represent repeated addition. I use unit form and write multiplication equations to represent equal groups. The symbol × is used to show multiplication and to write multiplication expressions and equations.
I organize equal groups in an array or tape diagram. Then I can see the number of groups and the number in each group and I can write a multiplication equation.
Lesson 4
Interpret the meaning of factors as number of groups or number in each group.
Lesson 5
Represent and solve multiplication word problems by using drawings and equations.
The numbers I multiply in a multiplication problem are called factors. They describe the number of groups and the number in each group. In the tape diagram, I see 7 groups with 5 in each group. The tape diagram represents 7 × 5 = 35.
Using Read–Draw–Write helps me make sense of problems. When I see the drawings and strategies my classmates used to solve the problem, I learn more strategies to use next time.
