Beads of Joy By Wendy Maurer

www.beadsofjoy.com

Beads of Joy are hand-crafted glass beads made in my home studio. All my beads are kiln annealed to ensure they will last many lifetimes. The inspiration for these beads comes from the colors in my garden, the lush forests that surround our community and the ever changing ocean outside my windows. The form and texture of foliage, the light on the water, the lines of intersecting shadows, the hues of sunrises and sunsets, a drop of rain on a leaf - all create Joy in my heart and make me happy. I hope you find my beads interesting and they make you feel good when you look at them. As a self-taught artist I am on a continuous learning adventure and I am blessed with time, energy and wonderful people to support me as I follow this adventure. Wendy Joy

Elke van Breemen www.elkeswildlife.com Elke's Wildlife Art My fascination with animals began as a toddler, as it does for many people. Children seem to have an innate connection with animals; they are immediately drawn to animal imagery and form strong bonds with wildlife and pets. Sometimes this connection fades over time and leaves adults feeling detached from the animals they were once passionate about. My passion for animals has been fortified through my work and study within wildlife rehabilitation and conservation. Drawing and painting animals allows me to portray their behaviour, emotions and physical evolutionary characteristics, which continue to mesmerize me. I hope that my work will increase others' awareness of the beauty that lies in nature's spectacular and sensitive creatures. Willow Shack Studio By Ellen Atkinson

Willow Shack, the up-cycle Studio To say that we are a product of our environment is too true. I was born in Williams Lake, B.C. and grew up on a hunting lodge in the interior of B.C. My dad, a hunter, was a man of few words but with a true talent for creating and improvising. I would watch him for hours while he worked in his saddle shed, a memory that I still hold dear. My mother, who would sew our cloths, can our food, cook and clean (without electricity or running water) and still find time to read aloud to my father every afternoon. Both unknowingly taught me to use what you have, make what you need and take time for family. Who doesn’t need jewelry!! After making jewelry for over 40 year, in 2006 I started making jewelry from vintage and antique flatware. I was then inspired to make all my jewelry from reclaimed materials. I added old metal buttons, silver/brass and copper trays, old keys, vintage tins and bullet caps to my line. Along with a few Silver Smith classes and lot of practice, I have found my true passion and am living my dream! Bloomfield Flats Custom Cedar Furnitaure By Brian and Judy Bloomfield

www.bloomfieldflats.ca I escaped the clutches of Manitoba's winters in 1979 and moved to the West Coast. A 35 year career in the aircraft industry as a "tin man" was exciting and rewarding. Now it is time to make some sawdust. I have field tested our furniture for over 25 years and still have an original in the home collection. Memories are made with this furniture, at least at our house. We offer outdoor furniture in the classic “Eastcoast” style and our newly designed “Westcoast” style. The two styles come in single chairs, loveseats and combos (two chairs joined by a tabletop). Custom orders to suit your personal needs are welcome. This is a value added product from Vancouver Island forests. Product research has proven that this unfinished cedar furniture will have a minimum 25 year life, longer if shown any care, offering the most in value. Our philosophy on making furniture is simple. Is it comfortable? Is it quality workmanship? Will it last? This is furniture for the Soul!

Stoneworks Jewellery By Robert Mathison and Jane Rothmund Working from their home in the Deep Bay/Bowser area of Vancouver Island, Stoneworks Jewellery is the collaboration between Bob Mathieson, a retired school principal from north Vancouver Island and Jane Rothmund, a retired school principal from Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada. Jane has had a lifelong passion for precious stones and jewellery design. Bob has always had an interest in design and metalwork, and in fact, made stained glass for many years. Both artists are self-taught. Now through Stoneworks Jewellery, Bob and Jane have designed and created a bold new line of artisan jewellery, where Bob manufactures the metal components from silver, copper, and brass, and Jane embellishes the necklaces, bracelets, and earrings with intricate wirework and wild collections of gemstones. We would welcome the opportunity to earn your trust and deliver to you the best hand-crafted jewellery available in the Oceanside and Lighthouse Country area of Vancouver Island from Campbell River to Nanaimo, B.C.

Faye Dietrich

www.fayedietrich.com An unexpected injury brought an end to Faye’s career as a flight attendant with Air Canada, but did not end her journeys to Canada’s wild landscapes. A move from Vancouver to the Haida Gwaii gave her a wonderful opportunity to begin painting full time while immersed in the beauty of the north. Faye continued developing her portfolio while living at Prince Rupert and exploring the Skeena River. After relocating to eastern Ontario, Faye returned to the north, enjoying two years in the Yukon. Faye currently lives and paints at Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. A self-taught artist, Faye is inspired by the natural beauty of the Canadian wilderness. Email: faybee@hotmail.com

Secrets In Silver

By Rea Harfield

www.secretsinsilver.com

Rejuvenate while creating unique, one-of-a-kind jewellery! Creating is like breathing to me; it has always been a part of everything I do. I am a lampwork glass bead and silver artist who loves color and texture. I enjoy pushing the boundaries of my medium. In doing so, I create unique, unpredictable glass and silver jewellery. My pieces have been shown in high end galleries in Western Canada and are worn by women of distinction. Each piece is its own artistic creation and is individually handcrafted. I have a passion for teaching because I love the process of sharing my secrets for creating silver jewellery and guiding others to craft well. The greatest reward is the laughter and excitement as others discover that—Yes, they can create beautiful jewellery. I am a Certified Precious Metal Clay (PMC) Instructor who loves developing new workshops to cater to the ever growing needs of my students. Email: reasbeaddesigns@shaw.ca Telephone: 250 586-3913

Uptown Framing Fran’s work is very unique and beautiful— Marquetry Art work—wood veneer cut to create fine art acrylic on canvas. Go online to see more of Fran’s work.

Growing up on the prairies, creativity was just a part of my family’s life. When it was too cold to walk the mile to school, we were given paint by numbers kits, or scrapes of material, or just about anything to see what we could make of it. In my youth, I enjoyed making wooden boxes and I found that by using the grain in different ways I could make the boxes look totally different each time. I stumbled onto a Marquetry Book, the art of cutting veneer to create fine art work. By using Birdseye Maple Veneer I could see the ripples of water, parts of Burl Ash the fog at the day’s start, well I can go on and on. For some time now I have been painting with Acrylics on canvas, in this media I let a lot of the childhood shine through. I paint from my memory, letting my brushes bring me back to Saskatchewan, my travels and beginning to reflect my new home.

Mirabeans By Tristen Weiss I love taking old items and turning them into something new and fresh! My mitts and mittens are made from old wool sweaters - I felt them, cut them up and put them back together again! I have really sensitive skin and hate getting the itchies, so most of them are lined with soft fleece (which is new fabric). I am a stay at home mom, so I work around my two year old's schedule :) So this is a great way to have fun playing with my fabrics and buttons and it also supports my love of thrift store shopping and fabric hunting :)

Redroom Artglass Studio

Beautiful Fused artglass dishes, and handmade glass bead jewelry My work explores and documents my love of working with glass. I am addicted to it, never seem to get enough, and for me, glass has it all--colour, dimension, clarity, and reflection. My addiction has evolved to torching my own glass beads, and fabricating sterling silver, copper & brass components that I transform into one -of-a-kind jewellery pieces. Inspiration for my beads comes from the west coast landscape, specifically, the ocean at low tide, bright and vibrant flowers in the spring, and the contrasting and changing colours of the fall season. I have a combination of formal training in glass bead making and consider myself “self taught. My BA degree in history/art history has provided me with a vast understanding of significant art forms and styles that influence my work. I work from my home studio in Nanaimo, BC.

Janice’s Pet Portraits I came to painting later in life, progressing from watercolour scenes to animals on rocks and finally to painting pet portraits. I've always loved animals, especially dogs. I wanted a portrait of my own pup, so I gave it a try and when my doggie friends saw the finished product, they wanted one as well. All my work is by commission and comes to me either by word of mouth or my website. Seeing my client's emotional response to their beloved pet's portrait is such a rewarding experience.

Phillips Pottery My earliest memories of clay come from playing with the beautiful blue clay found on our farm in south eastern Ontario. Years later, in 1986, I took my first pottery class with a guild in Beaumont Alberta and was hooked! When we moved to Airdrie Alberta. I was fortunate enough to have Greg and Lori McRitchie of Mudslide Stoneware as neighbors. Greg's pots are still my standard for "quality control". In 1992 our family moved to the Parksville and Nanoose Bay area on Vancouver Island. My work has since progressed and diversified from strictly functional pottery, to include more creative pieces fired in Raku, Tozan, electric, gas, and wood-fired kilns. All pieces are individually hand thrown on a Shimpo wheel or hand built from slabs and extrusions. Consistent quality workmanship is found in the glazes and pieces for those that like to collect completed sets. Currently I am a member of the Nanaimo Potters Guild, past-president of the Arrowsmith Potters Guild located at the Parksville Train station. My work can be found at "Pyromania Pottery", a store located behind the Coombs Country Market in Coombs B.C. just outside of Parksville, Vancouver Island, B.C.

I first began woodcarving as a way to keep busy after retiring but after completing my first bird, I was hooked. I studied in Ontario under various carvers for many years before relocating to the island in 1994. Since then I have been an active member of the Oceanside Carvers. I enjoy carving ducks and birds but lately I have been moving into the field of Pyrography or wood burning. Gibson Abbot

Red Cod Forge Dave was an artist from an early age and began working with clay and drawing wildlife with pen and ink. The interest to heat steel in order to mold and ply it like clay became the focus of Dave's art. He built his first forge in 2002 and began his foray into the steel medium. Ever since, Dave has been continually practicing the ancient art of blacksmithing. Dave's hand forged work is mostly done with recycled steel. Through this medium, he incorporates marine themes with coastal wildlife to create abstract and freeform steel sculptures. Dave's works range from small one dimensional pieces to two or three dimensional sculptures, gates, railings, and functional art for the use in the home and garden.

Heritage Cedar Products By Glen Hersley

All the furniture is hand made in a shop on Glen始s small farm on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He uses only select Western Red Cedar that is air dried before it is put into the manufacturing process. This insures the lumber maintains its integrity throughout the life of the piece of furniture. The lumber is also handled several times during manufacture so all visible defects can and are detected and the piece of lumber is culled. This means only top quality wood is used in making your furniture. Glen also uses only stainless steel hardware both in the kits and for assembly. This prevents any black staining from hardware and allows the furniture to sit out in the weather without any problems. The kits come with easy to follow instructions, hardware kit and the precut cedar pieces. And of course all of the furniture can be purchased assembled. Everything is unfinished so the purchaser can put their own personal touch to their furniture. If you leave it unfinished it will turn naturally grey over time. Otherwise choose a high quality finish designed for use on cedar.

Patt Scrivener

The desire to create has always been my passion. I am fascinated by form, color and texture. I work experimentally and intuitively allowing my emotional responses to guide me. Using mixed mediums I layer, scratch, take away and rebuild as the painting evolves. I love contrasts which is evident in my work, rough and smooth, dull and shiny, textured and flat, vintage and modern. Like my personality, my work is spontaneous and complex. My hope is to make a connection with the viewer and cause them to experience some of the excitement and pleasure that I have enjoyed creating the piece.

Frankly Yours Unique Woodworking By Frank Armich Born on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Frank Armich from an early age developed a keen attraction to the inherent beauty of local woods. As a young apprentice in his father’s business of the production of burl wood furniture and clocks, Tidal Wave Manufacturing, Frank quickly acquired the skills necessary to work with wood. Today Frank creates by hand a wide line of artistic sculptures such as decorative trees, sculptured mirrors, wall pieces, bowls, driftwood pieces and furniture fashioned out of Bird’s Eye Maple, Red and Yellow Cedar, Fir as well as other local woods. Frank carefully hand carves and sands each piece with the intent to raise and illuminate the wood’s grain. Possessing an ability to visualize beauty in its raw state, he successfully brings to life a deep, earthy resonance – a resurfacing of the wood’s once magnificent glory. With a deep appreciation of the natural, surrounding landscape of the ParksvilleQualicum region, Frank also employs a variety of roots as a medium to create one-of-akind chairs, tables, lamps and beds. In addition to a unique woodworking business, Frank takes pride in the manufacturing of his handcrafted, silver-plated windchimes. Always interested in the re-invention of found items, his delightful creations hearken memories of an era gone by. Once seen and heard, these whimsical chimes remain unforgettable. Very Terri Studio By Terri Reid

I have recently retired to Nanoose Bay to be closer to family after a 30 year career as a graphic designer in Toronto. Photography has always been a passion of mine. I am truly in my element with a camera around my neck. I now share my beautiful photographs, captured on canvas, with friends & family.

Precious Earth Merrien Loughead creates beautiful semi—precious Stone Jewelry and Cedar Baskets.

Patiken Art I have been intrigued with creating with paint since early childhood when I would spend hours sitting up on my dresser with the big round mirror and painting my face over and over in all patterns and designs and constantly creating art. My childhood medium was simple watercolors and my face was my first canvas. Not surprising, portraits have become one of my great loves in my second childhood. Throughout the past thirty years, while working full time and raising my family, I was constantly enrolled in workshops and courses honing my artistic skills and knowledge of landscapes, seascapes and portraiture. I have painted with oils and acrylic and produced paintings using French dyes on silk and enjoyed the magic of the airbrush. Having recently ended my working career I have now entered the ‘refreshment years’ of my life where my passion to paint now has free reign. The artist in me has now stepped forward holding the reins of my life and I am excited to see what creative wonders I shall produce. Someone once said, that creativity is God’s gift to you…what you do with it is your gift to God. I honor that along with knowing that it truly is a greater reward to give then receive. Therefore, I do not paint objects, rather I focus on painting that which is loved by myself or others. My painting passion explodes when I work on a painting that I know will be personally cherished. No book, lesson or workshop has ever brought forward the creative passion that lies within me and that surfaces when I paint a picture of love for someone, be it a home, a person, a pet, a view. Watching their faces when presented with a painting of their love, is the greatest reward of all! I plan on spending the rest of my life simply enjoying, discovering, expanding and playing with the creative artist within me. She has now arrived.

Jennifers Artwork

By Jennifer Scott I grew up in Maple Ridge BC, where my artistic ideas were nurtured from a young age. I cannot remember a time when I was not doodling on my school work, or coloring outside the lines.p In 2007, I took the plunge and moved across the strait to study art. I attended Vancouver Island University and completed my Visual Arts Diploma. My eyes were opened to new techniques and ways to approach art in general. Being inspired by the world I surround myself in, my work has developed into something very organic and filled with color. I look forward to seeing where my work progresses, as I continue on in my own journey.

The Coombs Old Time Fiddlers

Old Time Fiddling is a music genre and has nothing to do with age as we have fiddlers from pre-school age to many in their 90’s. In fact the very best way to have the music we love live on after us is by involving youngsters. One of the best ways to get youngsters involved is in the school system. A good way to promote fiddling is by asking to hear more of it on either TV or radio. There is an app. called “cbcmusic” that is available through itunes. This is a free little app that works on either your computer, ipad or your smart phone. The app. features music genres of many different types from classical to hip hop. The CBC is receptive to hearing from people if they would like something added and I have asked them to include a fiddle stream – I got a response saying, they will if and when they get enough requests! If we want to hear more “Old Time Fiddle Music” then the best thing to do is be proactive. You can contact CBC and let your request be known at: Radio Music radiomusic@cbc.ca It doesn’t have to be long and complex a simple request for a fiddle music stream on “cbcmusic” would be all you need to do. Throughout the province the BCOTFA is comprised of 13 active branches. Most branches have weekly music jams; many hold monthly old time dances; some host annual fiddle contests; others feature jamborees; most host concerts featuring nationally recognized fiddle stars, and at least one branch hosts monthly Contra dances.
