Ron Stuart

www.island-art.ca

I was born in Saskatchewan but moved to Calgary at a very early age. During High School I developed an interest in art and after graduating I attended SAIT, but only for 1 year. I painted some in oil at this time but I tried and preferred Acrylics. Unfortunately life got in the way and it would be years before I painted again. When I was 23 I moved to Victoria and for 10 years I lived there until I married, and at this time I moved to the US and I lived in Oregon for another 10 years before relocating to Banff, Alberta where I worked and dreamed about moving back to the Island. Finally at 65, I retired and a 30 year dream finally became a reality. I quickly picked up some paints, brushes and canvas and set to work painting the local scenery, some from my days in the Rockies. I am in love with the area around central Vancouver Island and along with my passion for landscaping my yard, socializing with a wonderful new group of friends I have also restored my desire to paint. I work exclusively with acrylics at the moment and try to have a showing as often as possible.

Fiddlestick Pottery By Jackie Walker & Ruth Cook Fiddlestick Pottery started a few years ago with the unexpected receipt of a kiln. We both have gardens and decided to try making something for our own gardens, and to give away as Christmas gifts to family and friends. Requests soon arrived for more, and Fiddlestick Pottery went into production. Fiddlesticks can add interest to plants such as ferns, hostas and grasses, or can brighten up an empty spot in the garden. Ruth and Jackie

Larry Stuart “ I am accomplished artist working in various media and having been producing art since achieving my degree in Art from the University of Calgary in 1983. I have works in both private collections and corporate collections as Pan Canadian Petroleum ( Encana) and Esso (Imperial Oil) . My works include architectural renderings , portraiture and images of the west coast of Canada where I now make my home . I enjoy working in graphite , oils , watercolours and periodically multi media. My personal viewpoint is that we miss out on the simplistic beauty of something when we look at the overall picture , but when we zoom in, we see the real beauty , the texture , colour gradations in rocks or the many colours that are viewable when a wave is looked at up close or even the forest floor with its crushed leaves , broken branches and many colours that one can see in the shadows , light patterns and objects in the forest . Recent paintings subject matter includes my images of the west coast ocean waves , rockscapes with the ocean architectural renderings of sections of buildings in France , Hungary , and Austria . "

My love of the ocean, its amazing coastlines, and the rest of Gods beautiful creation on Vancouver Island, is the inspiration for my paintings. I enjoy working with vibrant colours blending in curves to portray the essence of each piece. email : nfo@yvonneachesonart.ca

Mike Rebar Stone Sculpting www.bigrockbc.com Mike started sculpting in sand stone and cement in 2000 and was introduced to stone carving in 2001 by fellow sculptor Ian Howie. He sculpts local granite and marble he harvests from various sites on Vancouver and Quadra Islands off the west coast of British Columbia. His sculptures and garden art are held in private collections all over North America. Mike sees the integral form of each piece inside the stone, then works with both traditional hand tools, carbide chisels and diamond blades until his vision emerges. Fine details are achieved with hand files followed by wet and dry sanding to complete the process. He creates free form and realistic designs that continue to evolve as the stone is worked. His pieces range from 6 inches to 6 feet high and reflect a west coast theme. The body of his work embraces natural themes emulated in powerful freeform designs, birds, seals and Orcas. Visitors are always welcome at Mike’s studio and gallery located at his home just off of highway 19A north of Parksville BC.

Willow Shack By Ellen Atkinson

Willow Shack, the up-cycle Studio To say that we are a product of our environment is too true. I was born in Williams Lake, B.C. and grew up on a hunting lodge in the interior of B.C. My dad, a hunter, was a man of few words but with a true talent for creating and improvising. I would watch him for hours while he worked in his saddle shed, a memory that I still hold dear. My mother, who would sew our clothes, can our food, cook and clean (without electricity or running water) and still find time to read aloud to my father every afternoon. Both unknowingly taught me to use what you have, make what you need and take time for family. Who doesn’t need jewelry!! After making jewelry for over 40 year, in 2006 I started making jewelry from vintage and antique flatware. I was then inspired to make all my jewelry from reclaimed materials. I added old metal buttons, silver/brass and copper trays, old keys, vintage tins and bullet caps to my line. Along with a few Silver Smith classes and lot of practice, I have found my true passion and am living my dream! Phillips Pottery My earliest memories of clay come from playing with the beautiful blue clay found on our farm in south eastern Ontario. Years later, in 1986, I took my first pottery class with a guild in Beaumont Alberta and was hooked! When we moved to Airdrie Alberta. I was fortunate enough to have Greg and Lori McRitchie of Mudslide Stoneware as neighbors. Greg's pots are still my standard for "quality control". In 1992 our family moved to the Parksville and Nanoose Bay area on Vancouver Island. My work has since progressed and diversified from strictly functional pottery, to include more creative pieces fired in Raku, Tozan, electric, gas, and wood-fired kilns. All pieces are individually hand thrown on a Shimpo wheel or hand built from slabs and extrusions. Consistent quality workmanship is found in the glazes and pieces for those that like to collect completed sets. Currently I am a member of the Nanaimo Potters Guild, past-president of the Arrowsmith Potters Guild located at the Parksville Train station. My work can be found at "Pyromania Pottery", a store located behind the Coombs Country Market in Coombs B.C. just outside of Parksville, Vancouver Island, B.C.

Beads of Joy By Wendy Maurer

Beads of Joy are hand-crafted glass beads made in my home studio. All my beads are kiln annealed to ensure they will last many lifetimes. The inspiration for these beads comes from the colors in my garden, the lush forests that surround our community and the ever changing ocean outside my windows. The form and texture of foliage, the light on the water, the lines of intersecting shadows, the hues of sunrises and sunsets, a drop of rain on a leaf - all create joy in my heart and make me happy. I hope you find my beads interesting and they make you feel good when you look at them. As a self-taught artist I am on a continuous learning adventure and I am blessed with time, energy and wonderful people to support me as I follow this adventure. Wendy Joy

SeaLuxe

www.sealuxe.ca

If you like sandy toes, sea salty breaths and low tides then you’ve come to the right shop. All of my inspiration comes from the ocean shores. Everything in my shop has a touch of the beach -even my milk bath has seaweed in it. I like to create pieces with natural things I find at anchor –beach combing (my second favorite thing). Dried seaweed, drift wood, sea shells, beach glass and beach rocks are all staples in my workshop/studio.

Sweet Peas Kids Krafts Sweet Peas kids krafts is about fun stuff for kids: ‘activity pillows’ with Velcro, button-on items or finger puppets, super-hero capes (including personalized), aprons, Tutus, appliqued clothing and bibs (including custom orders), stuffed dolls and animals, bunting (Happy Birthday and/or personalized), Teethers, Tooth Fairy pillows and much more. All items are hand made by me! I have always loved creating with my hands (a trait handed down from my grandmother) and my very favourite way to do that is with soft, natural, and bright fabrics. I am especially proud when people tell me my handicrafts are 'whimsical' or 'happy' because that means I have done what I set out to do!

ROY HANCLIFF PHOTOGRAPHY Roy Hancliff has become a world renowned in flight bird photographer, you can find his work in art galleries, wildlife magazine covers, and on the Internet. Below is a little bit about Roy in his own words. I was born in Oxford England. My first real camera was Nikon F2S with photomic head, longer ago than I care to remember. I moved to Spain in 1985 with my wife Sharon for a better climate and simpler life. Photography took a back seat as we carved out a living. We finally moved to Canada in 2003, settling in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. I now had the time to dedicate to my passion of photography that had been put on hold for so long. I chose to concentrate on Birds in flight as they have always intrigued me. I wanted to capture the beauty of nature that is not normally visible to the naked eye. Even Birds that we consider to be common and uninteresting come into their own element when wings are frozen in mid flight. I often find myself sitting in a hide at temperatures of -15 C trying to capture that all important shot. Or in the case of the Hummingbirds +35 C with sweat running down the backs of my legs but I would not have it any other way. I study their flight patterns and feeding habits for hours to determine where they will come into the frame, every bird has a completely different approach as they feed. I think it would be fair to say that whatever the shot it is calculated and taken in my mind before I even begin. I hope that you enjoy my site and it has given you a different perspective into Bird and Insect in flight photography. "This has given me the opportunity to challenge myself further and branch out into some Seascape photography".

Janice’s Pet Portraits I came to painting later in life, progressing from watercolour scenes to animals on rocks and finally to painting pet portraits. I've always loved animals, especially dogs. I wanted a portrait of my own pup, so I gave it a try and when my doggie friends saw the finished product, they wanted one as well. All my work is by commission and comes to me either by word of mouth or my website. Seeing my client's emotional response to their beloved pet's portrait is such a rewarding experience.

Douglas Walker Sculpture Challenging status quo suggestions, the inventive work of seasoned sculptor Douglas Walker blurs the lines between form and function, art and craft, the surreal, sublime, whimsical and joyous toward the often mysterious and ultimately profound. The award winning Canadian sculptor of semi-precious metals includes brass, copper and silver, bound with elements of formed glass and long discarded recycled objects to form kinetic works of engineered magnificence storied with layers of charm and luster. From his studio workshop alchemical relationships are made between materials brazen by fire, fused by water and framed by the wind, waves and wilderness of his Vancouver Island home. Over the last twelve years Douglas Walker has produced over 2500 unique works sold around the world. Artistic integrity merges with mechanical excellence making Walker’s works renowned for their enduring construction and timeless quality. His musical instrument sculptures age graciously with time receiving patina as they absorb the elements outside or glimmer proudly protected indoors. The compositions seem to develop their dream like quality even further over the years, inviting the viewer on a journey of unlimited imagination.

Jennifers Artwork

By Jennifer Scott I grew up in Maple Ridge BC, where my artistic ideas were nurtured from a young age. I cannot remember a time when I was not doodling on my school work, or coloring outside the lines. In 2007, I took the plunge and moved across the strait to study art. I attended Vancouver Island University and completed my Visual Arts Diploma. My eyes were opened to new techniques and ways to approach art in general. Being inspired by the world I surround myself in, my work has developed into something very organic and filled with color. I look forward to seeing where my work progresses, as I continue on in my own journey.

Affinity Stone Jewelry & Design By Debra Kasprick

At Affinity Stone Jewellery & Design, I strive to create beautiful, freeform gemstone pieces using a mix of metals and leather. My styles range from very dainty and feminine, to truly rustic, with an organic feel. My designs are very abstract and sculptural. I let each stone as I hold it, dictate the flow of the design, so the end result is a unique, one of a kind work of art to wear, every time. I love to work with my clients to create something unique and meaningful using stones they have hand picked from their travels, or special affinity stone combinations they have chosen for their birth sign. I look everywhere in art and architecture for inspiration and am obviously influenced by my life partner Dave, and the metal medium I am surrounded by! As my designs are always evolving, each year is an exciting and fresh experience in creativity!!! Debra

Photography by Randy Hall Randy Hall is a Vancouver Island photographer specializing in nature photography, whether it is capturing natural settings such as seascapes or forest landscapes or the plants and animals that inhabit this part of British Columbia. After years of camping on the island and working in the forest industry, Randy gained a real appreciation for nature. He considers himself a landscape photographer first, but also an opportunistic wildlife photographer. “My photos are my interpretation of works by a true master… Mother Nature”. Randy has developed a style that shows enhanced colours and contrast. When many people think of contrast, they think colours and tones. There can also be contrast in content. An example of this can be seen in some of Randy’s early morning images of Parksville Bay. Towering or threatening clouds can instill the feeling of unrest, while the calm waters of the bay say serenity. “It’s this type of scene, and the incorporation of weather, that interests me the most”. Randy attributes much of his success to his friendship with local professional, Craig Carmichael and to the support of his wife, Cindy. It’s one thing to take photos and produce works of art, but it’s difficult to take that next step and get it out there for all to see. This is where your support team plays a critical role.

Cute But Stupid

by Amy Baxter

Amy Baxter, aka cute but stupid, has been using her camera to express her art for over 30 years. Although her images do not reflect a "cute but stupid" image, she uses this phrase because of her sense of humour and how the phrase has broken the ice in many ways. Amy's images are an expression of how she sees beauty. She uses a technique called texture layering which gives her images a painterly look. Her images have been described by admirers as "quiet elegance" and "still but alive".

Red Cod Forge Dave was an artist from an early age and began working with clay and drawing wildlife with pen and ink. The interest to heat steel in order to mold and ply it like clay became the focus of Dave's art. He built his first forge in 2002 and began his foray into the steel medium. Ever since, Dave has been continually practicing the ancient art of blacksmithing. Dave's hand forged work is mostly done with recycled steel. Through this medium, he incorporates marine themes with coastal wildlife to create abstract and freeform steel sculptures. Dave's works range from small one dimensional pieces to two or three dimensional sculptures, gates, railings, and functional art for the use in the home and garden.

Bryony Beads

Bryony Beads are created by Jane Bryony-Shaw who has been making beads for 14 years, using an oxygen and propane fired ‘torch’ to transform glass rods by melting them into beads, using the age-old Venetian lampworking process. Unique handmade beads are then threaded onto leather and bead wire to create colourful, one-of-a-kind jewellery items designed to bring joy and a sense of fun to the inner child of the wearer!

Journey Beads

I started making glass beads just over five years ago when I took a class with Joanne Andrighetti. I had been collecting glass beads (such as Trollbeads; I hate to admit it, but I still do!) for a few years before that and I really wanted to create my own so decided I would look for a class to do just that. I absolutely love it!! Other creative endeavours of mine have come and gone but glass is here to stay! Currently I have a small studio set up in my garage in Ladner, and I work several times a month at Andrighetti Glass co-located with the Terminal City Glass Co-Op. I have taken classes with Damaris Oakley (redroom artglass studio in Nanaimo) and will continue taking classes with people that inspire me. I am a part-time student at UBC and a BA in Art History with a minor in Medieval studies; I am planning on incorporating some of my medieval studies and art forms into my beads. One of the wonders about working with glass is that you will never stop learning and being amazed. They are like gifts that are unveiled every time you take them out of the kiln. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do!

Blackfish Pewter

My name is Marianne McDonald. I have been working with pewter for about 30 years. I learned my craft while working for Seagull Pewter, which was located in Nova Scotia. I was part of the Product Development department and as a carver, it was my job to create clay prototypes that were used to create new work. When we moved to BC, I could not find a job in my classification so I decided to create one and Blackfish Pewter was born. Jim joined me in this venture a few years later, & we have been supporting ourselves with the craft ever since. I enjoy working with pewter alloy. It has its strengths & weaknesses & it can be really frustrating when it doesn't behave the way it’s supposed to. This is especially true with the lead-free alloys that we use. When the process is successful, it makes up for all of the disappointments. We make our living by doing several things that involve Pewter. We wholesale to a number of gift shops, museums & the provincial & federal Governments. We do the farmer markets & the summer art shows & of course, we do the Christmas markets.

Helen Kilsby

I am inspired by the duality of nature. The yin and yang: the raw, rough, organic movement of the wild earth and its calming, flowing, abundance. Helen Kilsby creates work that reflects the shifting and ephemeral aspects of the natural world. Working in mixed-media painting and printmaking, she builds multilayered, tactile, abstract paintings. Kilsby has had solo and group exhibitions across Canada. Her work can be found in both public and private collections. Born in the England, Helen Kilsby now lives in, B.C. Canada. She received her B.F.A. from The University of British Columbia Okanagan. Helen Kilsby also teaches painting and printing workshops .

Esther Sample

The coast--natural landscapes, working world, remote wilderness and busy harbours life on the shores of BC is where Esther draws her artistic inspiration. Having grown up on the coast, and spending nearly a decade as a commercial fisherman, the wild and rugged coastal waters have truly inspired Esther’s artwork. Now, in her quiet studio, Esther draws upon her life experiences and paints about it daily. She has a deep desire to share her point of view and her love of the land she calls home. Today, you can find Esther in her studio daily, or perhaps out on the local beaches and estuaries, painting, pulling from landscapes, blending in her own experiences, chasing the ever elusive light in the hunt to create beautiful paintings. In 2011, Esther became the first woman to win the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s 24 year long sport fishing salmon stamp competition with the painting “Hunger Strikes”. The following year, Esther was invited to join 50 of BC’s finest artists to work on a project called “Artists for an Oil Free Coast”. Using their artistic voices, the group produced a film, hard cover book, and a traveling art show which circulated throughout BC and Alberta. It was a chance for artists to bring beautiful visual interpretations of the coast and its amazingly intricate ecosystem.

Shambles Jewelry Design We are two sisters, Kiva and Kelsy and our mom, Bev. We have been making things together our whole life and naturally moved to creating jewelry from mixed metals and semi precious stones. We love creating together, inspiring each other and occasionally surprising each other. Most of the jewelry is created on our family farm in Nanoose Bay inspired by the fields, the rain forest we are nestled in and the ocean a short walk away. We love to create stories with our work and feel honored when someone feels a connection with what we have to say.

Lumina Designs

by Lynsie Forster

At age 6 I contracted polio and once released from the hospital I had to stay inside for 2 months. It was summer time and I drove my mother crazy so she taught me all kinds of things to keep me busy and out of her hair. That was my introduction to crafts and I have been addicted all my life. Making things is my therapy, stress reducer and passion all rolled into one. I am an avid knitter and have recently learned to spin wool, which I love. I did a lot of decorative painting until our house was so full of things I had painted that I had to stop. When a friend introduced me to lamp work bead making and hand forged sterling silver I was hooked. I learned how to do Viking knitting from a book. I prefer making mixed media jewellery by combining these different methods and incorporating semi precious gems and freshwater pearls.

Marilyn Bennett (Elf-kins, Polymer clay elves) I love being creative! I started 'playing with' polymer clay in January 2015 and it has grown into an obsession! Each time I complete sculpting a new little elf, I am inspired with fresh ideas for the next one! Because of my love of gardening and the beauty of nature surrounding me, I decided to make little 'garden and forest creatures' that I call my elf-kins.

Clay Roots Studio

My pottery works are inspired by the soft colours found in nature. The textured creations have an aged and organic appearance. They are hand built and slab rolled using a hand carved press mould to create a three dimensional effect. I hand draw on every surface and hand paint each creation in a watercolour style with underglazes. All pieces are highlighted in a 3rd firing with real gold. From plates to platters, bowls and tiles, I am inspired to create new themes and new collections every year. No two pieces are the same. The high-fired stoneware is also functional with food safe glazes

Jody’s Naturals Jody's Naturals is a small, family run business based in beautiful Victoria BC on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. After having children with sensitive skin we started reading labels and becoming curious about what we were putting on our skin. We found it difficult to find products that really were natural and affordable. This in turn inspired us to create our own skin care products and we haven't looked back since. Our all natural soaps are hand crafted using the good old fashioned, cold process method. We make our soaps in small batches from scratch using all natural ingredients, our own recipes and 100% pure essential oils. We then hand cut and cure each bar for at least 4 weeks to ensure a hard, long lasting bar. We also make shampoo bars, shaving bars, bath bombs, bath salts, moisturizers, massage bars, soy candles, hand felted wool dryer balls and all natural lip balms. Be sure to check back often as we are always working on new recipes and products.

Helen Valentine A PLACE WHERE FAIRIES DWELL Is it a surprise that children believe with their full hearts in the existence of fairies? Helen Valentine has assembled a cheerful menagerie of cottages and castles that just might make people of all ages wonder if pixies are, in fact, real. Using natural materials, such as flowers, twigs, roots, seeds and bark, Helen painstakingly crafted these petite dwellings and all the furnishings, down to the last Elfin detail.

“Glass is my answer. It is my path. It is only when I am creating that I feel like I am going in the right direction in life. You might think it’s the intense heat, the beauty of molten glass or the rush of completion; but that’s only part of it. Making allows me to express myself through process, design and sometimes even the finished product. Glass is a challenge, the process is rather cathartic, enjoying the freedom and control the glass has over me. I am forced to push limits and sometimes explore the medium on an unconventional level which just makes my job creating that much more satisfying. Sometimes I leave the studio feeling defeated, but every other time I leave feeling empowered and content.” ~ Toni Johnson

Grassroots Designs - Artisan Jewelry

GRASSROOTSDESIGNS is located in the beautiful Comox Valley and has been operating since 2014. What was supposed to be a simple birthday gift for her Sister-in-law inspired a whole new direction in life for Darya. "I had never intended on making a career out of designing jewelry. I didn't even intend on it becoming a hobby, I just wanted to give my Sister-in-law something different for her birthday. I also didn't intend on loving it so much. I am a huge fan of modern and mid century modern interior design due to the clean lines, use of beautiful materials and a sense of simplicity. The inspiration for Grassroots' designs are based on those concepts. Many, many years ago my parents were craftsmen. My Dad was a leather and wood worker and my Mom was his helper. They sold at craft fairs all across Canada, taking my brother and me with them. I don't remember it in great detail as I was very young, but the familiarity lingers and is, I believe, a part of why I enjoy shows so much." While the creation of the jewelry is entirely done by Darya many of the other aspects of Grassroots is a collaboration with her parents.

Botanical Bead Laura Haley began making jewellery almost 20 years ago, and, over time, has developed and refined her style into the easily recognizable brand “BotanicalBead”. BotanicalBead jewellery is sold in vintage markets & fairs on Vancouver Island (from Courtenay to Victoria) year-round. In making BotanicalBead jewellery, Laura sources vintage (circa 1900’s) brass, mostly made in the Art Deco & Art Nouveau style, and to this she adds Czech glass or Austrian crystal beads to make unique earrings. For some pieces, Laura works with the same factories (that made the original vintage pieces) to get new ornamental brass findings that are made with the original 100-year-old stamp. She then oxidizes, burnishes, verdigris or polishes these new fittings to create vintage replica pieces. Most people cannot distinguish the old from the new but it’s always fun to try.

Lois Goodnough I began making cloth art dolls about 4 years ago after becoming captivated by a little doll I saw in a Gallery in Dubrovnik. I thought I would try my hand at making a doll and a whole new world of creativity opened for me. I have had no formal art training but love drawing, painting, sewing – and am drawn to whimsical things, colourful textiles and fashion– especially fashion of bygone eras. Dollmaking seems a perfect fit for me. I love creating these little personalities – Louisa’s Ladies!

Aldas Art Studio ALDA SAUNDERS received a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Art History from a university in the United States, at which time she pursued her childhood interest in painting and drawing as well. Alda moved to Canada in 1993 and has since been able to rekindle her love of painting, particularly in watercolours, acrylics, and oil pastels. She is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a past member of Art 10 Gallery of Nanaimo, B.C., the Nanaimo Art Group, the Nanaimo Arts Council, and the Ladysmith Waterfront Arts Council. Her designs are one of a kind, mixing mediums, and not mass produced. Alda says that putting glass to a torch is like painting with molten paints, and the light within a gemstone is every changing. Her workshops for these art pieces are also in her Nanaimo, B.C. studio.

The voice of the universe as it relates to me‌ as it turns out, it is held in a graphite pencil. I am a Vancouver Island native, born and raised in the Comox Valley. As a self taught artist, my art is inspired by life, animals & nature. Expanding my portfolio with more prism colour pencil and water colour pencils added to my drawings is proving to give me very satisfying results. I hope to create something that is clear of noise and stirs an emotion or a memory... with only my pencils. To date my best compliment has come from one small girl, "I want to draw like her Mom" ... if you just want to be inspired to draw... come see me I can help you with that.

The Coombs Old Time Fiddlers

Old Time Fiddling is a music genre and has nothing to do with age as we have fiddlers from pre-school age to many in their 90’s. In fact the very best way to have the music we love live on after us is by involving youngsters. One of the best ways to get youngsters involved is in the school system. A good way to promote fiddling is by asking to hear more of it on either TV or radio. There is an app. called “CBC music” that is available through itunes. This is a free little app that works on either your computer, ipad or your smart phone. The app. features music genres of many different types from classical to hip hop. The CBC is receptive to hearing from people if they would like something added and I have asked them to include a fiddle stream – I got a response saying, they will if and when they get enough requests! If we want to hear more “Old Time Fiddle Music” then the best thing to do is be proactive. You can contact CBC and let your request be known at: Radio Music radiomusic@cbc.ca It doesn’t have to be long and complex a simple request for a fiddle music stream on “CBC music” would be all you need to do. Throughout the province the BCOTFA is comprised of 13 active branches. Most branches have weekly music jams; many hold monthly old time dances; some host annual fiddle contests; others feature jamborees; most host concerts featuring nationally recognized fiddle stars, and at least one branch hosts monthly Contra dances.
