Int roduct ion Ever since emerging on the art scene in the early 20th century abstract art has steadily gripped the attention of the artists and public alike. The endless possibilities of self-expression through color, light, shades, and shapes truly fascinated those who create and the ones curious about human creativity. In the words of the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire “the art of painting new structures out of elements that have not been borrowed from the visual sphere, but had been created entirely by the artist...it is pure art.” The aesthetic appeal of abstract art is hard to underestimate as well. The viewer is as free as the artist to see and even more importantly, feel an unlimited potential of the work. No other art can create so many various impressions in the mind of the spectator as abstraction, and there could be as many interpretations of the piece as there are people. Moreover, it is typical for the same person to experience a gamut of different emotions the longer one concentrates on the work in front of him.
Certainly, the dangers lurk behind the powerful facade: can one draw the line between mastery and imitation, unique and industrialized, professional and amateurish, when the human mind does not have a descriptive certainty to fall upon? In a skeptical world, there is always a suspicion that the abstract art may just as well take a gullible mind for a proverbial ride. Yet, let us put our doubts to rest. In Ancient Greece, the incomparable painter of Kos, Apelles, won the honor to be called the best artist of all times on the quality of his line. Paradoxically, the hardest test of an artist’s skill does not necessarily come through realistic representation. It is even more ironic that a lot of abstraction is illusionary. In most cases, the reality itself is an ultimate abstraction. We welcome you to delve into the theme of “Traveling Through The Light” through the works of our talented artists who each, in their unique way, bring you their vision of the abstraction: open to your interpretation and inviting your exploration.

S t e v e Mo or s Steve Moors is a British/American artist based in New York. Over the years he has been involved in the arts in a multitude of disciplines. He has been a creative director, an art director, an art teacher, a photographer, an illustrator, and most recently, an artist. Steve has been showcased and interviewed in several magazines and exhibited in the U.S.A, Israel, and the United Kingdom, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. He is now focused entirely on his own self-motivated artwork. Steve creates original hand-rendered large format digital prints. Although working digitally, he uses a simple ‘traditional’ version of an HB pencil. This process involves many, many hours of rendering. He calls the process Tradigital. Steve’s subject matter is essentially driven by his fascination with the incongruities and conflicting self-deceptions created by the struggle between our primal and present modern selves. His work seeks to address and expose these insidious phenomena in a visual language that is focused enough to expose the issue at hand, and just broad enough to not be colloquially and culturally exclusive, hence revealing and bringing awareness to these pitfalls with an ongoing series of provocative yet encouraging contemporary visual sutras. Steve says: “The confluence of evolutionary insistence maps the ways in which we navigate our window of time. It continually negotiates the ever racing existential landscape within which we have only ourselves for company. I’m excited and surprised by the work. It brings together the multifaceted aspects of my life experience as ingredients for a fresh, cohesive, yet always exploratory world view.”

Br a n d on Movall BPHOTOGRAPHY was founded by Brandon Movall in late 2016 as a way to artistically express his view on the world around him. He quickly found his niche in night photography, as his time during the day was dedicated to his full-time job as a civil engineer. Brandon's capacity to see the world as an engineer and as a self-taught photographer brings a unique sense of style and imagination to every image he captures. This unusual balance of engineering and art has lead to Brandon’s work being featured in a variety of international exhibitions around the country, most recently at the acclaimed Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Brandon says, “The human race has always been pushing the limits of civilization, even to the point where society functions after the sun goes down. Since my daytime is dedicated to my job as a civil engineer, my work focuses on the exploration of our world at night, through all forms of urban and rural photography. I want to help my audience appreciate the beauty that surrounds them every night.”

Vi ta Vl a di Vita Vladi is a Russian born artist and photographer based in New York. She moved to the United States with her family at the age of 10. Vita earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Studies from Guilford College in North Carolina. After moving back to New York to pursue an acting career, Vita soon realized the hustle of show biz world was not for her. She began taking pictures as a hobby, which quickly evolved to be her primary outlet for creative expression, and became her raison d’être. For the past 13 years, Vita has photographed everything from cuisine to concerts. In 2010 she experienced her first small success with her photos of Lady Gaga, which circulated online inviting the attention of Gaga’s creative team, who later commissioned her for a book. Most recently Vita traveled to India working on a large private commission. The past two years the artist has been devoting her time to a series of personal photography projects, experimenting with abstract forms and discovering new ways of seeing. Vita says, “My abstract pieces are created through layering multiple photos taken over the years and blending them together to create one seamless image. Each work from this collection is in itself a quilt of documented moments sewn together to tell a story of a time gone by. I don’t remember why and where I took the photos that now comprise these works, but I’m drawn to the narratives I now observe in them. The thrill for me is seeing how a series of seemingly incongruent images blend together and create a kind of visual jazz of shapes, shadows and lines - improvised, inharmonious yet balanced. What I love about abstract art is that it is open-ended. It can articulate a meaning without imposing it; it challenges the limits of our perception and inspires new ways of seeing.”

Sh aw n Tow n e An American artist Shawn Towne discovered her creative spirit at an early age. That passion continued after graduating from Rutgers University, where her favorite course was Art History. Shawn started her career in graphic design with U.S. Healthcare and eventually moved into the world of advertising. She worked in this field for over 20 years. Most exciting campaigns included Chaddsford Winery and NASCAR. The artist traveled extensively with her family throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America, further fueling her creativity. Most recently, she started working with acrylic pours and pigment infused resin to create abstract designs. Shawn fell in love with the style and diversity of applications, from wall art to high-end furniture. The designs are enhanced with stones and glass pieces then sealed with resin for a hard, glass-like, shimmery finish. Shawn finds inspiration for her art in her family, her travels and her unique experiences. She strives to create beautiful pieces that are sparkling with life. “As my children got older, I had more time to dedicate to all of the creative ideas swirling in my head," says Shawn. "I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, taking in the scenery and culture as inspiration. I am super excited to be creatively challenging myself in this medium and happy to share my new found love with all of you!

Ele onor a Hobbs / Ell a Ni z a Eleonora Hobbs (EllaNiza) is an artist with an exceptional feeling for the rich saturated palette. Her artwork represents the world as she perceives it: vivid, magnificent, and breathtaking. The variety of details in each of her paintings fills the entire composition. EllaNiza bases her abstract works on a perception of color and brings the sensation of life to each of them. Born in the former Soviet Union, she has a degree in architecture from the Tashkent State Polytechnic University, Uzbekistan. There, for five consecutive years, EllaNiza studied the history of art, composition, professional drawing, pastel, washing with Chinese ink, and watercolors as a significant part of that program. She moved to the USA in 1996 and has been working in oil and acrylic since 2001. In 2012 she attended the Art Academy in Miami under the supervision of Jaque Harvey. EllaNiza exhibited in Miami, Miami Beach, and NY. She has participated in the 26th and 27th Chelsea International Fine Art Competitions (2011-2012) that were organized by the Agora Gallery of New York. The artist also exhibited at the Miami Red Dot - Miami SOLO International Art Fair (2011), and took part in the Jerry's Artarama Self Portrait Contest (2013), as well as the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition (2018), and the Contemporary Art Exhibition (2019), presented by Margo Gallery in NYC and Jersey City. EllaNiza says, "I've been passionate about art all my life. I was in New York City on 9/11. Those tragic events gave me a strong impetus to start painting. I used to consider myself a graphic artist. In the past, I loved aquarelle hues, monotone gray-white-black tones, and straight lines. Later on, I tried some new techniques using oil and acrylic and discovered a fantastic world of vivid and bright colors. It gave me a vast range of new possibilities. From precise straight lines to free impulsive strokes and texture - this is my evolution as an artist. I am a positive dreamer and an optimistic human being. In our days of high technology, of fast impetuous life, sometimes there is no time for a brief respite, for a glance around us, for a look into oneself. People are insensitive to our environment, and a lot of time just indifferent. My mission is to help them restore their natural sense of perception by awaking their soul, their conscience, and their spirit. I see a harmonious beauty in nature surrounding us with its sounds, brilliant colors, and fascinating sensations. A combination of contrasting saturated tones, clear impulsive lines, and bold strokes create an interesting, sometimes unique texture. All this motivates me to form and create a "flow of music and inspiration" within a canvas."

Ig or S ta s ov sk i y / S taig o Igor Stasovskiy (STAIGO) is an artist of Ukrainian origin, who spent most of his adult life in Russia and now lives and works in New York. He holds an undergraduate degree in conducting and orchestral management from the St. Petersburg Culture Institute in Russia. Igor currently writes music and songs for his solo musical project "STAIGO", which he performs in New York clubs and at music festivals. He also plays in the band "Patzany" ("Boys" in English) that performs throughout the metropolitan area. Igor attributes his love for art and drawing to two mentors. The first one was Tatiana Zhukova, a professional artist who taught Igor the basics of drawing, painting, and color mixing at the local art studio for kids. He returned to the studio to become her teaching assistant upon graduating from college. Later, Igor met Gennadiy Nazarov, a well known Ukrainian caricaturist, who became another teacher to the young artist. For several years they collaborated on various projects, from advertising to stage design for theatrical productions. It was Nazarov who taught Igor how to pay attention to every detail in producing graphics and caricature. The artist began participating in local exhibitions and art competitions. In 1992 his works were printed in the Italian catalog for caricatures. Even though Igor’s main activity remains in the music field, he is constantly engaged in producing artworks. He enjoys working with all kinds of media and materials including oil, acrylic, ink, and mixed media.

Jac k C a serta Jack Caserta is an emerging artist originally from Connecticut, now living in Charleston, South Carolina. Formally trained in Art at the College of Charleston, SC, he now devotes full time to his artistic career. Jack developed a "pluralistic practice" working in different styles and mediums. His figurative and symbol-laden abstract works use oil and acrylic punctuated with graphic lines of pastel or Krink marker. By using multiple layers of color and coarse brushwork, Jack likes to explore how a line, a stroke, or a mass of bold color can evoke raw feelings. His process is intuitive, organic, and inventive. Jack says: "I'm constantly experimenting with textures and layers to convey flow and movement. I believe my abstract work is of an expressive language influenced by music, landscapes, stories, and sensations. I take a lot of inspiration from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem De Kooning, and Gerhard Richter, to name a few." Jack has participated in many local exhibitions. Most notable was Pequot Library's WET PAINT art show in 2018 where he won top honors and was awarded a month-long solo exhibition this Summer. His works will be included in the 69th AONE Art Exhibition at Silvermine Gallery, CT, this Fall. Jack's paintings are in private collections in South Carolina and Connecticut.

A lice S ung u rov New York-based, Alice Sungurov is no ordinary 21-year-old. After finishing the Biryukov Academy of Art and Music (Sparta, NJ) with multiple awards, she went on to record and produce her album “Walls and Roads” at age 16. She traveled around the world while graduating early from the High School of Fashion Industries, NY. At 18, Alice published her first book “How To Be The Popular Kid,” that helps teens and young adults manage the high pressures of growing up. She is currently pursuing a degree in business from the FIT, NY. Alice has been connected to the different forms of art expression her whole life. Whether she was singing, dancing, playing instruments, or painting, Alice wanted to express her inner stories. "When I produce something, whether it is music, photography, art, writing, or even a video, I never try to force the result. I only want to express my peak authentic self at that particular moment," says Alice. “Saturated Spirit” is a painting Alice created when she felt she finally understood her path. “I don’t paint very often, so the fact that I created this painting is kind of crazy to me. There was a moment when I realized I wanted to be strong, passionate, and adventurous. This canvas is about that," says Alice.

Ele n a Z ele n i n a A Russian-born Elena Zelenina grew up in the studios of two artists, M.Biryukov (1926-1995), her stepfather and Godfather, and N.Gladkih (1927-1995), her uncle. Spending summers by the sea watching her uncle painting with all shades of blue and green, or being in the studio alongside her stepfather to a great extent, shaped Elena’s artistic vision. However, they differ significantly since both her uncle and her stepfather magnified the beauty of the real world, whereas Elena often paints the inexplicit reality. For years Elena wondered who she was as an artist. She met her creative destiny while traveling through India, surrounded by vibrant ineffable colors of this vast country. In 2008 she trekked the Himalayan Mountains where she stood above the clouds in complete awe of the place and the creation. A shock wave went through her body that allowed her to feel and realize her potential as an artist. Exploring India became her new journey. The music, the food, the spirit were almost addictive. As she went deeper into herself, Elena felt the craving to come back again and again. During her travels, Elena discovered the navigation map of the Creative Spirit, Vedic Art. In 2013, she became a certified Vedic Art Instructor, which revealed her real purpose. Elena’s identity as an artist is to help others experience the state of Oneness and realize their highest potential. This concept she explores at length in her book “Art Completes You. Transformation through Art and The Science of Completion.” “I often start with a meditation to connect with my untamed spirit," says Elena. "I do it by listening to the line moving across the paper to understand what it wants to express and then to surrender to its desire. Listening to the line is much more important than guiding it because art is a direct way of communicating with the human spirit. My whole life I’ve been using art as a tool to help others, to open them up, to heal, to start them on a new adventure. In reality, I was helping myself to have courage, to trust life, and to be ready to meet the unknown.”

Nata li a Kore n K rop f Natalia Koren Kropf is a New York-based artist, working in drawing, printmaking, collage, water-based painting, ceramic sculpture, and photography. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, Natalia is a classically trained artist who is inspired by multi-faceted art life of New York City. Finding her lyrical voice in its cultural polyphony remains a reoccurring theme in her art, that she refers to as visual poems. The artist's works were exhibited at various venues, including New York University East Galleries, Parsons School of Design Gallery, International Print Center of New York, Center for Contemporary Printmaking, CT; Silvermine Artists Guild, CT; Monotype of New England; Lynn Art Museum, MA; Arts Club of Washington DC; New York Public Library, Art Students League of New York. Natalia Koren Kropf’s works are in private collections in Germany, Austria, Italy, Finland, Russia, CzechRepublic, Cyprus, Japan, Lesotho and throughout the United States. Natalia enjoys teaching fine art to children in her private studio. She also conducts community art workshops for adults in New York Public Libraries. Natalia Koren Kropf is a member of the Monotype Guild of New England, the Pushkin Society Artists Guild, and the National Association of Women Artists, where she currently serves as a President. Natalia says, “I refer to life as to a process. I prefer printmaking media for its technical complexity and visual simplicity - a print on a clean paper, where less implies more, where simple becomes capacious. To me, prints are like poems - they are hand-printed notes on current thoughts, potent fragments of feelings, and sketches of my surroundings. The layering of prints brings forth multi-layered thoughts and memories. I combine prints into one composition to convey the challenges and joys in the life of a contemporary artist. I believe that the silent power of formal elements, such as color, lines, and movement, is capable of transforming the viewer into the realm of physical harmony, emotional balance, and intuitive attunement. My classical education provides a sound foundation for my work with reference and reverence to masters that are influential in forming my aesthetic. Such artists include Henri Matisse, Joan Mitchell, Henri Moore, Helen Frankenthaler, Katsushika Hokusai, and, naturally, the Russian Constructivists."
