The rise of social media and cell phone cameras has evolved a new type of image-based culture. Cell phones have short working lives and are discarded when their usefulness is over. In 2018, Nathan Proctor reported that Americans throw out at least 151 million cell phones yearly, or about 416,000 per day (https://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2018/12/11/right-to-repair-nathan-proctor). Many cell phones are discarded due to product failure, or updating to the latest version--but what about lost phones? I created this book in the style of Ed Ruscha’s photography books. My friend and I went to Busch Gardens, Williamsburg Virginia, for an adventuresome rollercoaster day. Throughout the park, there were broken cell phones on display, as warnings. Apparently enough cell phones have been lost on rides to cause concern. In fact, taking photographs from rides will result in park dismissal. I photographed the rides with my iPhone 12. I did not photograph while on the rides. So really, this book is about plastic pollution: how carelessness reduces the already short useful life of cellphones. When at amusement parks, keep your cell phones safe--Remember: The Ride Always Wins. -Karen Aneiro
