I realize my title for this collection of sketches is misleading. Saying
the “Scribbles & Scratches of Artist in LA LA Land” which are “edited by Melissa Kojima” will make some people think the editor, and the artist are two separate personages. They are not. Or are they? Confusing, huh? Let’s settle this. I can tell you that Melissa Kojima becomes “Artist in LA LA Land” when she illustrates and designs for clients such as the Los Angeles Times Newspaper, and Loyola Marymount University. But she becomes Melissa Kojima when she steps in to do the negotiations, the accounting and marketing of the brand, “Artist in LA LA Land”. Another way to clarify this is to say that I, Melissa Kojima, put on many different hats, as a creative person and an entrepreneur, including the hat, “Artist in LA LA Land” and the editor hat as I am doing at this moment. Does that clear it up?

Right now, I’m trying to clear my way between the chaos and order of the many sketchbooks and sketches of Artist in LA LA Land. The following 250 pages are primarily from 3 sketchbooks that started in 2006 until current (September 2010). These sketchbooks are not published in their entirety in order to fit them into an affordable art book for you. In other words, they have been edited down to a reasonalbe size. Some sketches are almost fully rendered and finished compositions. Others are quick, sloppy and ugly studies of hands, animals and the human figure. The “Green Book” is currently the sketchbook Artist in LA LA Land is working on, so it does not have as many pages to show. As a bonus, I added a few sketches from a sketchbook Artist in LA LA Land created for “the Art House Co-op” for their sketchbook library. Artist in LA LA Land was given the theme, “Forgetting to Call You Back”. You will see what she created around this idea of telephones. Please do not think that this publication constitutes all the sketching of Artist and LA LA Land during this 4 year period. They are simply a selection of a few of her many sketchbooks. As I edit them, I can see progress Artist in LA LA Land made, projects she was working on and sketches she did for clients. Maybe, you too will notice this evolution and variety. I can almost hear your questions now about this chaos and order. Did Artist in LA LA Land sketch daily? How many other sketchbooks did she have? What was the main purpose of the sketchbooks? Are they a kind of diary? To summarize, sometimes Artist in LA LA Land sketched daily, sometimes not. It is as the title says, sequences, commitments and purposes changed, “Between Chaos & Order”. Thank you for taking the time to look through this strange collection. I hope you will enjoy it. Melissa Kojima September 2010
