CAMIPEPE

We are “Camipepe,” Camila Olivares (Cami) and José Flores (Pepe), independent illustrators living in La Serena, Chile. We’ve been working together for four years, and we started right after finishing our degree in graphic design. We began to illustrate together for fun and we liked it so much that we decided to dedicate ourselves to it in a serious way. We also decided to work as freelancers because we knew that it was the best way to take advantage of our time. That now allows us the freedom of creating works that we are proud of. “Camipepe” is a fusion of creativity, love, and hard work. We love using bright colors and simple shapes with a childish touch. We use a digital technique that allows us to have very versatile illustrations, but we also have ventured into painting and muralism. Our favorite themes are animals, culture, nature and everyday life.

CARLOS VIELBA

Carlos was born on Palencia and now lives in Madrid, Spain. He’s part of a gallery there and works with many local brands. Although he spends most of his time in Spain, he’s worked and exhibited globally, displaying his work in places such as: the Art Fair Koln and Art Cologne as well as being published in the Huffington Post. He believes we are all a result of our experiences and people we’ve met, and he feels the knowledge that he’s gained from these experiences greatly informs his art. Carlos could be defined by a number of terms (creative director, illustrator, 3D artist) but at the end of the day, he’s just himself – which is what makes his art unique!

DANIEL LIÉVANO

3

A

Daniel’s work is all about the translation of thoughts of others into pictures. His concepts are often a blend of irony, nostalgia and hope, qualities that are also a part of who he is as a person. When developing an idea, Daniel tries to present concepts that are clear (as you would expect in any assignment), but he always tries to leave some space for that thing he considers the most beautiful to see - a mysterious gap between the artist and the beholder, making them wonder if they are both thinking the same thing. He’s collaborated with clients including: The Boston Globe, Vice, The Sunday Times, Observer Media and many others. Daniel has also continously been awarded by recognized illustration and design competitions. The key for him is to stay amazed by the mystery of the world, that way he feels more humble and makes him learn to find humor in things that might appear to have none. Daniel lives in Bogotá, with nearby mountains and forests providing a backdrop which he often uses as inspiration.

DANIELA CARVALHO

Daniela is a Lima-born, Barcelona-based artist with a background in graphic design, fine arts and illustration. Her career started 15 years ago as an art director in the advertising world, but she decided to dedicate herself entirely to illustration when she moved to Barcelona in 2008. Her work explores the beauty of the unknown and her attraction to the transformation of nature. She believes in the human figure, using pencil, paper, pen and ink, as a way to create a truer register of human nature that is not as possible through digital means. Rather than rejecting or negating the digital, her work reinterprets modes of digital distortion to unsettling and expressive effect, created by hand in a post-digital era.

EDU RUBIO

As a young student, Eduardo had to attend extra math lessons. The teacher was a music lover and lent him many albums. As well as spending many hours listening to them, Eduardo also began observing and appreciating the art of the album cover, leading to a love of illustration. His father opened a small art supplies shop, so he was never short of paper, paint and pencils to practice with. He improved his math but never quit drawing! What he loves most about being an illustrator is the challenge in conveying an idea or topic with just a few elements, while at the same time creating something beautiful. He especially enjoys working on subject matter that he would not have chosen or developed by himself.

Erick Retana is an illustrator based in Mexico City. He has collaborated with various newspapers, magazines, and agencies in Mexico and in the United States. As a jack of all trades, he could be called a designer, visual communicator, illustrator, and many more things but the title makes no difference to him. At the end of the day he loves creating and can’t imagine himself being anything else than one thing: an artist.

GASTÓN GONZÁLEZ

Gastón is an illustrator based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Drawing has been a huge part of his life since childhood. The caricatures in the newspapers were his first great source of inspiration. Then came the passion for music, with the world of album covers becoming one of the main reasons why he decided to study Graphic Design at the University of Buenos Aires. This career paved the way to join the exciting world of illustration. Gastón thinks that the concept of a commission is of the utmost importance, which is why he enjoys illustrating with various techniques, from vector illustration to digital collages that incorporate textures, etc. He also enjoys playing guitar, singing, composing, and always carries a book in his bag as a traveling companion.

GIANLUCA NATALE

As a self-taught artist, Gianluca has drawn for as long as he can remember. His minimal and flat illustrations are a mix of essential colors paired with a combination of lights and shadows. His works start always on paper, much like when he was a child, before rendering them digitally for final art. A little book and a pencil always travel with him to draw anything at any time. Sources of inspiration for him are all visual arts, illustrations, photos and everything that surrounds him in his daily life. Some Gianluca’s illustrations have been exhibited in some Italian cities, including Florence, Turin, Milan and many more. When he is not working he is a good cook and a big coffee lover.

JAVIER PÉREZ

Balloon grapes. Crayon burgers. Coffee bean rain. The mind of Ecuadorian graphic designer Javier Pérez has no limits. His compositions reinvent the everyday objects we often know and take for granted. “Common objects have a great advantage: they are familiar to our eyes but changing their context calls for the attention of the spectator,” Javier says. After being discovered on Instagram by an Art & Design blog, his work started appearing in magazines and advertising campaigns - in 2015, he published a book. His unique style encourages people around the world to see differently. “I never imagined that what I just did for fun could generate a whole trend, as if it were an artistic movement,” he says. From his studio in Guayaquil, Javier shares his motto with us: “Create each day, regardless of your skills.”

JEREMY BOOTH

A

Jeremy Booth was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky - and he still resides there today. Jeremy was fascinated with drawing as a young boy but as he grew older his interests shifted and he no longer pursued it. Years later, his creative interests resurfaced as he pursued graphic design. Jeremy spent half of his twenties teaching himself how to design. While learning and working through his design career, he was introduced to digital illustration and found he really connected with it. He has turned that exploration into a profession. Being an admirer of photography, Jeremy spends a lot of time studying light and harsh shadows. His work is inspired by his admiration and some have come to call his work “Vector Noir.

She really loves to travel to places where she can swim and look at the sea. If she wasn’t an illustrator, she would be a fashion designer or a tailor.

MIHAI TIGLEANU

3

A

Mihai is a freelance illustrator with a passion for craft and emerging techniques. He tends to apply traditional manners in a digital space, so he can come up with bold aesthetics for his artworks. He doesn’t have a personal style and sees himself more like a craftsman than an artist. He is constantly trying to expand his range of techniques in order to stage ideas in the best possible style. This goes a long way and involves anything from pencils and scissors to lighting setups and CGI renders. Sometimes though, a new technique becomes so bold that it makes him take some time to explore all its boundaries. It wins a spot. That’s how a new style is born, developing like a maker’s duty to his creation.

Siiri Väisänen is an illustrator and artist currently based in Leicester, England. She still draws inspiration from her long nature walks, although the thick pine forests have now changed into English meadows. Siiri is interested in both editorial and book illustration, and she has a passion for animation. Her simple and sweet animated gifs have spread joy all over the internet. Mixing handmade collage and textures with digital media is the key to her creative process. She thinks that it’s important to keep in touch with the physical way of making. Her style is colourful and quirky, and is inspired by Scandinavian folk art and children’s stories. She thinks that even the most ordinary things should have a little bit of magic in them.

VINCE VERMA

Vince Verma understands perfectionism. The Devon-born graphic artist, whose work has been exhibited around the world, insists on working painstakingly with pencil; doesn’t keep usual working hours (his photorealist renderings are created through working late into the night for days on end) and is almost mathematical in his intensely detailed approach. Verma’s story is fascinating. The artist was raised in Devon by illustrator parents as part of a creative commune and was entirely self-taught. He started drawing from childhood and received his first professional commission at 17. From there he has built an international following for his works. “I’ve been drawing since I can remember,” explains Verma. “I never considered doing anything else. I don’t even see it as a job. I just do, what I do.” Today he works in a remote studio in rural North Yorkshire and at his home apartment in Soho -Manhattan
