5 NEW YORK. NEW NATURE

Location: West Side Yard, Manhattan, NY Site area: 110 000 sqm Project year: 2012 Program: Theater city Master thesis at Polimi Team work: 2 people

Being on the edge of Manhattan, at the limit of this island and the water, the site is an important node of infrastructure as well as landscape. These abundant opportunity is now being wasted by giving the only function as a storage yard. A research is focused on the critical junction The former is an urban section coming from Broadway to the Highline, while the later is Hudson River.

West side yard as a junk space lacking of both urban fabric and green elements

The project’s idea is to have a penetrating condition between these too: the buildings and started to be transformed by the green space running through. New public space, and new skyline for New York are created.

FRAMING PIACENZA Location: Piacenza, Italy Site area: 78 000 sqm Project year: 2012 Academic proposal in Politecnico di Milano Team work: 2 people Exhibited in Polimi’s Open day 04/2012

On the northern tip of Piacenza, this site is closely related with historical center of the city, while also opens to the rural landscape. The important connection between these two is now broken by a series of misused space, ranging from the abandoned military area to the car-selling storage. The main strategy is to enhance this abundant opportunity by turning this series of misused area into a system of gathering spaces, from the place that is in front of Palazzo Farnese, through the medieval wall, to the river. A continues public path will connect these public space, while being embraced by the historical elements of the city on one side, and, on the other side, the contemporary architecture of Expo 2015. With all respect to the historical part, the new architecture itself is making different frames for the citizens to enjoy different views to the city, while encouraging them to keep on moving to the river.

HOUSE OF MUSIC Location: Hanoi, Vietnam Site area: 800sqm Project year: 2009 Individual work Exhibition & Nomination for National Award of Architectural Thesis 19th Century

Renovation proposal

It was a Methodical Church built in the 1880s when the French arrived in Hanoi. After times, the original building is overwhelmed by the chaotic of modern life. Despite of its important location in the center of Hanoi, either its historical and architectural values are falling into oblivion. This project is a solution to free the old church and make it connected with contemporary living. The extension must be independence but friendly, clearly different from the past but show its respect to the story of time.

The main connection is a glazed volume becoming the in-between element in terms of altitude, form, space, and material. New construction works as an separated system to assure that no loads are born to threaten the existing one. New building’s height is also considered carefully to live in harmony with the surrounding. The facade interprets neighbourhoods’s building but also in a dynamic way: a new life, a new song.

Situated in the urban center of Berlin, along the Spree - the river not only connects the project site with other monument in the East, but also provide the visitors many views to the building. It is clearly the intersection between 3 ! urban morphology that claim for a primary solid, compact form to be built. The cube is articulate with the neighbourhood axis. The auditorium is brought to the waterfront, while still keeping the existing street running below. The theater is elevated to create a public space, free movement & allow visual contact, continuity and a promenade along the river.

PARK[ING] BLUE Location: Via Parmense, Piacenza, Italy Site area: 7100 sqm Project year: 2012 4 day workshop in Politecnico di Milano Individual work

Being abandoned in a large empty area on Via Emilia Parmense without any connection with

against the surrounding void by its strong color and direction. The project aims to revive this sense of bravery, to make the site become so “catchy from the highway, so enjoyable for cars and people. It is a hybrid of park and parking, a landform art in blue tartan surface where people and their vehicles themselves become installations.

Proposed circulation

As the World Expo 2015 is coming in Milan, Italy, many projects are being developed, in which Expo Center is one of the biggest. Our proposal strongly focus on the relation ship of this buidling and 2015 Expo’s context and theme: “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. This is a proposal for construction and technology design studio, which force us to solve every problems in a very practical but also innovative way. Relationship between temporary and permanent part is wellconsidered. The main architectural idea is to open a public space, which also host the temporary functions (the auditorium that faces directly to the main axis of the Expo), to invite people from the main entrain, “seduce " technological solutions are carefully chosen to reach a low demand of energy.

A tensile structure’s shape is maintained by the balance of two hoop stresses along the principle directions of curvature, which are called warp and weft directions. As loads are applied by wind suction, snow load, etc, they cause one of the hoop stresses to increase, and the other to decrease. In this case, a hypar shape is chosen.
