KANJ NICHOLAS ROOM TO GROW : A SOLO EXHIBITION
PERSONAL STATEMENT KANJ NICHOLAS, APRIL 2020 Room to Grow is my solo exhibition, which was meant to open at the Museum of Cannock Chase on 2nd May 2020. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic it has been postponed until 2021. This was a significant goal that I had set for myself and have worked diligently towards. To not mark my achievements so far would make me feel like a part of me has been buried away for another year. A year is a long time. However, I view it as a gift; an opportunity to grow as an artist and emerge stronger from the wreckage of the pandemic. I thought it would be lovely to mark, what would have been, the opening of my exhibition with an online Private View of the work that I have created thus far. It is set in my home studio, an oasis where I am surrounded by plants; a space that allows me to paint & loose track of time completely! I view this collection of watercolour paintings as a warm-up to what is to come. I now have the gift of time to spend on my different areas of interest, which include oil painting and felt making. There is space to experiment with printmaking techniques and explore fresh ideas at a gentler pace.
This first series of watercolours is inspired by Brocton Coppice, an ancient forest in Cannock Chase where trees that are hundreds of years old still stand today. I experienced a sense mystique and magic in the air as I trod on the paths where these trees have stood all these years; seeing trunks watching me, swaying branches nodding, leaves that seem to whisper words of wisdom that can only come with age. Another series of watercolours is inspired by Hednesford Hills; a landscape that was wasteland which has been reclaimed and managed as heathlands for thousands of years. Dexter cattle graze the fields in summer to control invasive plants from taking over. The open landscape consists of pockets of woodland and scattered trees. Much of the heathlands have disappeared over the years but what does remain is breathtaking. I do hope you can share this journey with me and help mark this significant day in my artistic career.
