Since 1972, Artists Space has served as a platform for the most vital artistic dialogue to develop and to be brought to the public. Whether looking back at our early years, when Artists Space was the institutional birthplace of Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Louise Lawler and Adrian Piper  –  setting the terms for the art of their generation  –  or today, as we continue to identify the most important voices in contemporary art, such as Danh Vo, Hilary Lloyd, Duncan Campbell, or Bernadette Corporation, and give attention to previously marginalized artists, such as Charlotte Posenenske, Zilia Sánchez and Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Artists Space provides a unique framework for the most significant and internationally influential discussions in contemporary art. We believe in the importance of placing artists at the center of all our programming decisions and continue to commission new groundbreaking works, and our program at our second venue Artists Space Books & Talks critically reflects our times by inspiring conversations that innovate. Equally, Artists Space has never developed a traditional patron program; instead we are turning only to those who truly value the work of a visionary contemporary arts organization to ensure that together we have the means to continue to inspire. Stefan Kalmár, Executive Director & Curator Shane Akeroyd, President, Board of Directors Negar Azimi, President, Board of Directors

“…arranged as if for a supersize magazine layout, felt at once casual and flawless, brainy and unselfconsciously beautiful. I wanted to move in.” – Vince Aletti on Macho Man, Tell It To My Heart: Collected by Julie Ault, Artforum: Best of 2014

“Artists Space…again demonstrates that it is the most adventurous alternative gallery in Manhattan.” – Holland Cotter on Radical Localism: Art, Video and Culture from Pueblo Nuevo’s Mexicali Rose, The New York Times

“The fierce ambition that has marked the first three and a half years of Stefan Kalmár’s tenure as director (and curator) of Artists Space shows no sign of abating.” – Andrew Russeth on Frozen Lakes, The New York Observer

“A show you can sink all your senses into. Consisting almost entirely of printed matter, it is also a model of its kind and easily worthy of the Museum of Modern Art.” – Roberta Smith on Richard Hollis, The New York Times

“…a brilliant curatorial solution…makes the strong case that a small group of the most influential artists and their politically and socially charged work still has much to teach contemporary audiences.” – Maika Pollack on Living with Pop. A Reproduction of Capitalist Realism, The New York Observer
