Yo u r Gu i de to Art + Community

Issue 2 Fall 2017

Art Kit is a publication that highlights

innovative and community-engaged artists, organizations, and projects to empower readers. The magazine provides practical tools, work spaces, and inspirational examples to help individuals enrich their own community arts practice.

We believe that art is for everyone and the

arts build community. We aim to demystify art practices, gather knowledge from community leaders, and provide a creative springboard for all artists and would-be artists.

Art Kit will seek out artists, organizations, collectives, and administrators

wi

or

who embody the following principles as role models for our creative toolkit. Art in Community: We believe art should build processes that reflect and include the diversity of their f th audience through an intersectional lens.

Art as Community: We view art as a connector a

s

n

Art

which brings people together across boundaries and catalyzes movements that defy systems of oppression.

Art for Community: We declare art can provide space for transformative experiences that bring healing, joy, fun, and refuge.

Art with Community: We approach learning and

teaching with humility, and understand building sustainable movements requires deep relationships that increase agency for all.

This image is from a series inspired by the Indigenous Water Protectors against the desecration of the DAPL (Dakota Access Pipeline) on Standing Rock Sioux ancestral homelands. I was processing the violent colonial transformation (physical, psychological, ecological, and cultural) and theft of Indigenous land, peoples, and culture into the current nation-state of California (i.e. Gold Fever + Resource Extraction = Colonial Madness = Savage Systms).
