From the Editor Soooo, a rubbish thing happened this month – some scruffy little fandangler grabbed our beloved magazines from the internet and started calling our customers, impersonating us and telling them that they owed £100 on their accounts and he would need to take payment now! How rude! We reported them to Action Fraud (for what use that was, because until someone has actually had money taken off them, they won’t do anything about it!). Anyway, we popped it across our social media networks for our advertisers to beware and it sounds like the imposter got fed up after getting lots of fleas in his ear! Our fabulous customers past and present know us and know to call us directly if they ever get a call like that and that’s just what they did; Voice Customers 1 – Nasty little scammers 0!
the next 6 months flies by as swiftly (just so we can get back to spring again and hopefully more normality. Please note, I don’t normally wish my life away either and I know you shouldn’t!!).
As the weirdness of 2020 and more unfathomable rules continue, a strange thought occurred to me which I have discussed at length with various different people on my non-travelling travels! How can a year go so quickly when you literally have nothing to show for it?! Don’t get me wrong, I’m quite pleased about it in some respects but it’s basically Christmas next week and it was only 20mins ago that we were in lock down back in April, and time normally drags when you’re grounded!! So how about thinking about what we have learnt from this year. I have taken the time to focus more on my physical and mental health and feel much better for it. Maybe for you it is discovering a new hobby or interest, maybe you have realised how important your friends and family are or maybe it’s been some small acts of kindness you have experienced. But heyho if none of this applies maybe we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth and fingers crossed that
Hopefully see you all in the blink of an eye at Christmas!
Anyway, I just wondered if everyone else felt the same or is it just me? This month our front covers pay homage to Remembrance Day. Because of the pandemic there is a risk that this important memorial is neglected, particularly considering the potential loss of fundraising, so please visit the website and support them where you can. They are a charity and funding is much needed to support veterans and without the usual concentrated focus, we don’t want their coffers to run dry as they do such fantastic work – Lest we forget.
Happy Reading,
Emily x

Slimming World Recipe Cheeseburger Pasta Bake The nights are drawing in and we all fancy some comfort food, so this recipe is perfect! Filling, tasty and on plan. Fabulous! Serves: 4 Ready in: 40mins Syns per serving: 3
Method:
1. Spray a medium-size saucepan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-low heat. Add the onions, cover and cook for 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the pack instructions, but drain and return to the pan a couple of minutes before the end of the recommended cooking time. 3. Uncover the onions and increase the heat to high. Add the beef and fry for 5 minutes or until browned, breaking up any lumps. Drain off any liquid and season lightly.
4. Preheat your grill to high. 5. Stir the beef into the pasta. Spoon half of the mixture into a shallow baking dish, cover with half of the tomatoes and season lightly. Grill for 5-7 minutes. 6. Sprinkle over half of the cheese and top with the remaining pasta, beef and tomatoes. Grill for 5 minutes then sprinkle with the remaining cheese and grill for 2 minutes or until golden. Divide between 4 plates to serve.
Ingredients:
• Low-calorie cooking spray • 2 large onions, roughly chopped • 400g dried pasta shapes, such as fusilli or spirali • 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 6 large tomatoes, sliced • 80g reduced-fat Cheddar, coarsely grated (or see tip) Small pack fresh coriander, chopped

Luther Pepper (Kirkby Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield), my grandfather, was a solicitor in the local law firm Fidler situated in rented offices in Providence Square in Sutton. My mother recounts that it became Fidler & Pepper after Mr Fidler announced he was retiring and handed the keys to the practice to my grandfather. Luther had two sons, Robert and Geoffrey, both of whom returned from WWII; Robert a Lt Colonel in the Indian Army in Burma and Geoffrey a Colonel (GC) in Europe. Both had followed their father into the Law training as solicitors. My grandfather opened an office in Clay Cross for my father and opened an office for Geoffrey in Fishguard, Mid Wales (Geoffrey had a long and difficult recovery from the injuries he received taking the action for which he was Decorated). Opas House was commissioned in 1958 by my father Robert Pepper, to allow the expanding family law firm to move from their cramped rented premises in Providence Square into their own new premises. The site was vacant apart from a Nissan Hut from which a hairdresser traded. My father and the hairdresser had known each other for a very long time and this led to him agreeing to vacate the site provided the new building made space for a hairdresser to operate. My father honoured this agreement. The construction was undertaken by a local building firm (Mr Robinson) that had undertaken much of the house and building in the area. Fidler and Pepper (unrelated entirely with the law firm trading at the bottom of Market Street) remained a Family Law Firm practising in many aspects of the Law. Not least undertaking the conveyancing for many of the house purchases for local people funded by affordable mortgages provided by Sutton in Ashfield Urban District Council. Re-purposing of the Offices into a Creative Craft Hub came about in July 2016 with the support of Darren Ottwell, Planning Officer, Ashfield District Council.

As the nights draw in, I am often asked to include some ‘shorter walks that aren’t too muddy’. Although Rafa and Flake love the mud, we’re not so keen, especially when it comes to them muddying up the car and having to wash them down when we get home! So, I thought this walk would be perfect. It’s short, relatively flat and makes good use of some lanes, and paths which aren’t too muddy (weather depending!)
3.5 mile circular walk from Clay Cross A short and gentle walk for you and your dog! This fairly flat walk should take around 1½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy and uneven sections and a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.
START: The Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Danesmoor, Clay Cross, Derbyshire, S45 9RL. 1.
2.
Standing with your back to the cemetery turn left and continue along Cemetery Road for some distance. Continue until the road bends sharp to the left. Continue around to the left and then after a short distance take the first right into Beech Way. After a short distance take the first right again into Lime Tree Grove. Follow this road around to the left and then to the very end where the road turns into a lane. Continue straight along the lane for a short

distance and then when the lane bends to the left, turn right along a footpath into some trees. 3.
Continue, passing a stile on your left, and eventually reaching a stile directly in front of you. Climb over the stile and continue straight ahead along a lane. After some distance the lane bends sharp right. Ignoring the stile ahead of you follow the lane around to the right and eventually pass some farm buildings on your right.

turns into a lane. Follow the lane for some distance until reaching a road.
4.
Continue straight ahead and gently uphill until reaching a main road. Turn right along the road and cross safely, making use of the central reservation. Continue until reaching Highstairs Lane on your left.
5.
Turn left along Highstairs Lane going gently uphill and then steep downhill. At the bottom of the hill and shortly after passing Woodside House on your right, turn right along a lane and signposted footpath.
6.
Continue along the lane until it ends and then continue straight ahead into some trees and over a stile. Now continue with a fence on your left and a hedge on your right. After passing a house on your left continue with a fence on your right and a hedge on your left. After a short distance the path
7.
Turn right along the road for a short distance and upon reaching an open green area on your left, turn left along a signposted footpath into some trees.
8.
When you emerge from the trees continue straight to cross an open field. Upon reaching a hedgerow continue straight keeping the hedge on your left. At the far side of the field and upon reaching a brick built wall turn right heading uphill with the wall on your left.
9.
Continue straight ahead uphill until reaching a main road. Turn right along the road and then continue straight ahead until reaching some traffic lights at a major crossroads.
10.
Turn left at the traffic lights onto Thanet Street. Continue along Thanet Street and then take the second right into Flaxpiece Road. Upon reaching the end of this road bear right and continue straight ahead until the road bends sharp left. Follow the road around to the left and back to the start.

One bird to have increased dramatically in the Peak District and surrounding moors or heaths, is the stonechat. This used to be here only sporadically and was mainly a winter visitor to higher areas especially with extensive gorse beds. Indeed, the Adult Male more common Stonechat ‘chat’ was the whinchat, socalled after ‘whin’, gorse, or furze, though more often a bird sat atop bracken beds or similar habitats. Sadly, this species seems to have declined and is now rarely seen. On the other hand, the stonechat, called the Devil bird by country folk in times past, is ‘on the up’. The common names can get confusing though and for example, in Scotland, the stonechat with its jet black head and neck is known as the ‘blackcap’. This little bird, a cousin of the robin and the thrush, is a denizen of heaths and moors with a noticeable and distinctive repeated call, ‘u-tack, u-tack-tack’ a bit like two pebbles being brought sharply together. From being an uncommon winter visitor to the Peak District for example, the stonechat is now a regular breeder and a nice addition to the bird fauna for local walks. Lockdown earlier in the year with its reduction in recreational access, will have undoubtedly benefitted the stonechat, its upland cousin the wheatear, and the upland blackbird, or ring ouzel. The persistent calls of the chat gave rise to superstitions and a folk rhyme goes, ‘Stane chack, Deevil tak’! They who harry my nest, Will, never rest, Will meet the pest, De’il break their lang back, Wha my eggs wad tak’, tak’!’ Because of the ceaseless c h a t t i n g (obviously talking incessantly to the Devil!), it was believed that with its bloodMale Ring Ouzel and red breast, the Dunnock stonechat was
indeed the Devil’s bird. It was therefore protected and moreover, if you were so foolish as to take a stonechat’s eggs, then you could expect a dire fate. Indeed, for the deeply superstitious country folk of that time, this warming was effective protection. Stonechats figure in Stonechat literary references too, for example, when W.H. Auden noted the bird in a poem. He described it as ‘a bird stonehaunting, an unquiet bird’, again reflecting its constant chattering. The stonechat’s prominence Young Stonechat and folklore reputation is because of this restless behaviour and the distinctive chatter delivered from prominent perches on gorse, bracken, or leggy heather. In constant conversation with the Devil, and believed to carry a drop of the devil’s blood, the devil would break the back of anyone who harmed a stonechat’s eggs. A little like its lowland cousin the robin, the stonechat is ever on the move. It has favourite perches in and around its moorland territory and these might be on a gritstone boulder, a prickly gorse bush, a spring of purple heather, or perhaps a tall bracken frond. It is from these positions that the bird produces its endless chatter and that family groups of a male, female, and perhaps three or four youngsters excitedly ‘taktak’ to each other. With the distinctive and in the case of the summertime male, very s t r i k i n g plumage, this is a bird which is Female Ring Ouzel hard to overlook.

SOUTH NORMANTON ATHELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB “Firstly I hope this magazine finds you and your family in good health during the current climate. At the time of writing, we’re just preparing to play Clifton All Whites development in the Floodlit cup. With a home game against high flying Blidworth looming large. So far we’ve seen a pretty mixed bag of performances from the first team, 3 wins and 1 loss out of the last 4 games isn’t bad going, but the frustrating thing for all of us is - we know we can be even better if we cut out some of the silly mistakes we keep making and add that bit of continuity as the lads play together more and more as the season goes on. Preliminary discussions are also ongoing regards adding 3/4 youth teams to the ranks of the club, this is something we are keen to develop so we can offer a clear
34
pathway for local players into their local men’s football club. Be it the first reserve or even just the Sunday side. What is needed though, is the clear pathway for local players. Coming up in November is the local derby day, away to Pinxton, I think it’s fair to say this is a game a lot of the lads are looking forward to playing in and it’d be great to see as many of you down there as possible. The date for that game (Friday 20th November) and all the other games for the first and reserve team are below. As always, do make sure to check the clubs social media for the most up to date game updates, as, if anything does change, that’ll be where you’ll hear about it.“ Best wishes and Stay Safe,

Book Review

Louise has three jobs to make ends meet and even then only just manages to live from one payday to the next. Life is dull, not a lot happens. She lives in New York, one of the most exciting cities on earth, and yet…. And yet …things start to look up when she meets and gets talking to Lavinia. Lavinia has the lot, youth, money in spades, beauty. A great apartment and a lifestyle to match her income. She may be as shallow as a petri dish, but who needs depth when you’ve got the other stuff. Right? So how much would a person like Louise put up with to have access to the rich life? If you read Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton you’ll find out. Once Louise and Lavinia become friends and Louise moves into the swish flat, the story takes a dark turn. No more plot giveaway, but this dark, heady, glitzy, champagne-gulping tale will certainly take you to a different place to lockdown UK. If you’re in the mood for something quite sinister and unsettling and intense, this may be just up your street. Don’t expect something comforting, this is a wild but exciting ride.

The Industrial Revolution – It began in Derbyshire! When you see the words “industrial revolution” what’s your first thought? “Dark satanic mills”. Smoke blackened houses. A grimy cityscape… Densely populated areas like an inner city – Sheffield, Manchester, Bradford perhaps. You’d be right in a way, but the industrial revolution in the United Kingdom actually had its roots in the seemingly tranquil environs of Cromford – a small village near the River Derwent. Located between Wirksworth and Matlock. It is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Crumforde. Pre the 1770s cotton, imported from the US was spun by non-industrial means – individuals, in ‘cottage industry fashion’, mainly in Lancashire which already had a long history of fabric production. In around 1765, one James Hargreaves invented the “spinning Jenny” – the first multi-spindle spinning frame, meaning one worker could work eight or more spools at once. The power to operate the system was provided by the spinner rapidly turning a wheel with one hand. Unfortunately, the yarn produced by the spinning Jenny wasn’t particularly strong and up stepped Richard Arkwright, an inventive chap born in Preston, Lancashire. Richard came from a humble background, the youngest of seven surviving children born to tailor Thomas Arkwright. With no money for education his parents apprenticed him to a barber, and it was whilst working there that he invented a waterproof dye for the popular wigs of the time. The income from that invention helped to fund his prototype cotton machinery. In 1769 Arkwright patented ‘the water frame’ which used an overshot water wheel as its power source instead of the power of a spinner’s hand. To raise capital to build a mill to use this new machinery, he
40
partnered with a couple of Nottingham based hosiery manufacturers and in 1771 the first mill at Cromford was built, opening in 1772. The location was carefully chosen as there was a ready supply of water from an old lead mine drainage passage as well as access to a nearby brook. Geothermal heating meant that water leaving the mine remained free flowing even in winter – an important consideration if a mill was to operate year round. New housing had to be built in the area to accommodate the numbers of workers required to operate the mill. These houses are the first examples of factory housing development in the world. Working conditions in the mills would not have been pleasant; two 13 hr shifts per day operated, to allow an hour’s changeover each shift. Bells were rung to signal shift starts and anyone clocking in late would not be paid for the entire shift. Entire families were encouraged to move to Cromford to take up jobs in the mill and towards the end of Arkwright’s tenure it is believed that up to 2/3rds of the workforce were actually children. Arkwright’s mechanisation and factory operations were copied throughout the UK and beyond and that is why he can be regarded as being the instigator of the Industrial Revolution… right here in Derbyshire. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Mike’us sings M
As my wife keeps reminding me....
....life’s a lot better when you’re not constantly grumpy
Apparently I’ve been very good over the past few weeks. On some days, she tells me, I’ve not started moaning about anything until Ken Bruce comes on Radio 2. Well, I’ve been trying really hard and even managed a smile last week as I politely asked that young man to pick up the Red Bull can he’d dropped onto the pavement. I wasn’t smiling though when I heard what he had to say. Mind you, to be fair, Jeremy Vine’s show had started by then. Flushed with this (albeit limited) success, the love of my life, now thinking that she’s some sort of therapist, has suggested that I look to the future with optimism and think of the things that I’d like to do before my moaning days are over. “OK mon petit chou” says I. NB – she likes me to come over all romantic, but not before the start of Steve Wright in the Afternoon! “First though” I continued, “I’ll reflect upon all the things I’ve either stopped doing, have never done in the past or are unlikely to ever do in the future.” For some bizarre reason, I thought that would make me happy. It didn’t, but it got me thinking. Here are some samples from the long list I came up with. 1.
Buy a replica football short. Not that I’m vain in any way, but they just don’t do anything for my physique - or most blokes over the age of 40 for that matter!
2.
I gave up smoking many years ago and bought a wedding ring with the savings. Hmmm, I do wonder sometimes just how much I’ve actually saved over the years.
3.
Pay to have my car washed. I know plenty do, but they’re probably much better off than me.
4.
Climb Mount Everest in my kilt. In fact, I’ve

learned over the years that there are many things I ought not to do when wearing it. Cartwheels for example! 5.
Treat myself to a personalised number plate. See 3 above.
6.
Watch breakfast television. I just don’t have the time.
7.
Waste my breath saying ‘two thousand and twenty’ when I mean ‘twenty twenty’.
8.
Had my hair permed. point.
9.
On principle, I’ve never watched Braveheart. Of all the fine Scottish actors that they could have picked - James McAvoy, Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Robbie Coltrane & Jimmy Krankie come to mind - they went for Mel Gibson from Peekskill, New York. I rest my case.
Just never seen the
10. Despite being sorely tempted on occasions, requested a knife and fork in McDonalds. How about you? What have you never done? You can let me know by sending an email to mike. musings@outlook.com. Confidentiality, I’ll share some of the better examples with the wider public in 2021. NB – that’s twenty twenty-one!! Those of you who enjoy reading Mike’s Musings each month may be interested to hear that his second book was published last month. It’s a sporting memoir, written in his own style, and available from Amazon. If you think this will appeal to you (or someone you know) send Mike an email to mike.musings@outlook.com and he’ll provide details.

Gardener’s Calendar
Tulip planting time! Hopefully you’ve got all your other spring bulbs in by now, but tulips prefer the late start to avoid tulip fire blight. Tulips used to be mostly annual, but there’s now a lot more varieties which will go on growing year after year, so long as you look after the bulbs, so it’s worth looking out for them. If you’ve got heavy clay soil add a bit of gravel or organic matter to break it up before planting. The rule is twice the width of the bulbs apart and at least twice their height in depth.
r
Winter bedding makes the garden look a bit more cheerful and there’s plenty of variety available, from winter flowering heather to winter flowering pansies, violas, and polyanthus. They may not all flower all the time, but given some decent periods of sun they’ll reward your endeavour. Insulate outdoor pots with bubble wrap and put them up on something – pot feet or bits of brick or even polystyrene - to stop them getting waterlogged. Overwatering is more likely to kill winter flowering plants than anything else. Putting containers flush with a wall will often offer greater protection – but then you also have to check that they don’t dry out!
TOP TIP!
A cheap solar lamp for the greenhouse or a head light like climbers use may be a good investment, just so you can keep checking on outdoor plants during the short dark days without having to wrestle with a torch. 06/11/2018 18:16
