Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Soooo, a rubbish thing happened this month – some scruffy little fandangler grabbed our beloved magazines from the internet and started calling our customers, impersonating us and telling them that they owed £100 on their accounts and he would need to take payment now! How rude! We reported them to Action Fraud (for what use that was, because until someone has actually had money taken off them, they won’t do anything about it!). Anyway, we popped it across our social media networks for our advertisers to beware and it sounds like the imposter got fed up after getting lots of fleas in his ear! Our fabulous customers past and present know us and know to call us directly if they ever get a call like that and that’s just what they did; Voice Customers 1 – Nasty little scammers 0! As the weirdness of 2020 and more unfathomable rules continue, a strange thought occurred to me which I have discussed at length with various different people on my nontravelling travels! How can a year go so quickly when you literally have nothing to show for it?! Don’t get me wrong, I’m quite pleased about it in some respects but it’s basically Christmas next week and it was only 20mins ago that we were in lock down back in April, and time normally drags when you’re grounded!! So how about thinking about what we have learnt from this year. I have taken the time to focus more on my physical and mental health and feel much better for it. Maybe for you it is discovering a new hobby or interest, maybe you have realised how important your friends and family are or maybe it’s been some small acts of kindness you have

experienced. But heyho if none of this applies maybe we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth and fingers crossed that the next 6 months flies by as swiftly (just so we can get back to spring again and hopefully more normality. Please note, I don’t normally wish my life away either and I know you shouldn’t!!). Anyway, I just wondered if everyone else felt the same or is it just me? This month our front covers pay homage to Remembrance Day. Because of the pandemic there is a risk that this important memorial is neglected, particularly considering the potential loss of fundraising, so please visit the website and support them where you can. They are a charity and funding is much needed to support veterans and without the usual concentrated focus, we don’t want their coffers to run dry as they do such fantastic work – Lest we forget. Hopefully see you all in the blink of an eye at Christmas! Happy Reading,

Emily x

Gritstone tax and accountancy is a small friendly local accountancy practice specialising in property tax With the many property tax changes over recent years, many investors are moving away for traditional Buy to Let properties to Furnished Holiday Lettings. Qualifying FHL businesses can have significant tax advantages over standard Buy to let investments. Some of these are listed below. • Mortgage interest relief is available in full. • Capital Allowances are available on integral features, furnishings, etc. • The property can be free from Council Tax and Business Rates. • Entrepreneurs Relief can be available on sale. • For joint owners, the profit can be split as you choose. • The profit is regarded as earned income for pension purposes. We advise on all aspects of property tax including whether to run the business personally or through a limited company.

A Will is not enough: Why you should make your LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY now… Hopefully we all know the importance of making a suitable Will… it shows you care enough about what happens to your assets once you’ve died. But… shouldn’t you care just as much about keeping your assets and yourself safe while you are alive? If you are unable to manage your own affairs… a Will is not enough. The legal documents you need in place are called “Lasting Powers of Attorney”. They allow the people YOU choose now rather than someone appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with decisions in two key areas: your Property/Financial affairs and your Health/Welfare matters. There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf. Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a trusted, reliable person who is able to manage your personal affairs and remove the anxiety of having unpaid bills, at a time when you most need peace of mind. Similarly, as we get older, the need for attorneys increases as we are more prone to illness and injuries. Sadly, sometimes people fall into the trap of thinking “I’ll get something sorted when I start feeling a bit iffy”… but an unexpected stroke, accident or illness can take anyone by surprise, regardless of their age or health.

Only by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney now ensures that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. It’s vital to understand that you cannot make a Lasting Power of Attorney once you’ve lost capacity – by then its too late and your family will face a lengthy and expensive court process to be able to deal with your affairs. •

Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs.

The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery.

Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness.

Minor children could be taken into Care whilst Guardians are appointed.

An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled.

This is information was provided by Haworth WardDrummond, owner of Egg & Nest Ltd. , a provider of professional estate planning services in accordance with the STEP Code of Conduct.

It’s not too late to make a Will...

Making a basic Will Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney

We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the highest standards of conduct at all times.

All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Method:

1. Spray a medium-size saucepan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-low heat. Add the onions, cover and cook for 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the pack instructions, but drain and return to the pan a couple of minutes before the end of the recommended cooking time. 3. Uncover the onions and increase the heat to high. Add the beef and fry for 5 minutes or until browned, breaking up any lumps. Drain off any liquid and season lightly.

PET SERVICES

When Witches were Real - The Bakewell “Witches” It may seem strange to us living in the 21st Century, with our TV witches like Samantha in ‘Bewitched’, or the sisters in ‘Charmed’, but only a few hundred years ago Witches were considered very real, and very dangerous The church had done a good job maligning ‘midwives’, ‘wise-women’ and (female) herbalists for many years; until any woman who may have a modicum of healing knowledge could be charged with witchcraft and ‘consorting’ with the devil. Such charges would result in various nefarious ‘tests for witchcraft’ (torture in other words) to force a confession – unless the poor woman was killed in the process of extracting said confession! It’s easy to see how accusing someone of witchcraft could be a way to get rid of someone who stood in your way or had ‘wronged you’ – and this seems to be the case in the strange story of the ‘Witches of Bakewell’. In 1607, a Scotsman was discovered hiding in a cellar in London wearing only his nightclothes. The story he told to explain his presence was ‘strange’ to say the least! He claimed that he had been lodging in the house of one Mrs Stafford in Bakewell and had become aware of a light shining through the floorboards. Pressing his eye to a gap he had spied the woman, together with another lady, chanting: “Over thick, over thin, Now Devil to the cellar in London.” Whereupon they had both disappeared. Intrigued he repeated the words to himself, but he got them slightly wrong: “Through thick, through thin, Now Devil to the cellar in London.” He claimed he then travelled at great speed to London and awoke to see the two women laden with parcels of silk and muslin which they had gained by some illegal means.

16

The women drugged him, and he slept. A Judge ordered that the house in Bakewell be searched and the Scotsman’s clothes were discovered. Apparently this, and the fact that the man had been found wearing only his nightclothes, was sufficient ‘proof’ that Mrs Stafford and her friend (or possibly sister) were guilty of witchcraft. The two unfortunate women were taken from Bakewell to Derby and were sent to their deaths – by hanging or burning, depending on which account you read. A more plausible explanation of the matter is that the man fell behind in his rent and Mrs Stafford took some of his clothes to cover the debt. He then made his own way to London and ended up in the cellar, where he exacted revenge for being turned out of the Bakewell lodgings by making up the witchery story. There are actually NO official records of either the trial OR execution of the two Bakewell women, so the entire story, could just be that – fiction. The first written notice of the event appears in one William Wood’s ‘Tales and Traditions of the Peak’ of 1886 and in various other books of Derbyshire folklore. So, did it happen? Who knows? These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Book Review

Louise has three jobs to make ends meet and even then only just manages to live from one payday to the next. Life is dull, not a lot happens. She lives in New York, one of the most exciting cities on earth, and yet…. And yet …things start to look up when she meets and gets talking to Lavinia. Lavinia has the lot, youth, money in spades, beauty. A great apartment and a lifestyle to match her income. She may be as shallow as a petri dish, but who needs depth when you’ve got the other stuff. Right? So how much would a person like Louise put up with to have access to the rich life? If you read Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton you’ll find out. Once Louise and Lavinia become friends and Louise moves into the swish flat, the story takes a dark turn. No more plot giveaway, but this dark, heady, glitzy, champagne-gulping tale will certainly take you to a different place to lockdown UK. If you’re in the mood for something quite sinister and unsettling and intense, this may be just up your street. Don’t expect something comforting, this is a wild but exciting ride.

Gardener’s Calendar

Tulip planting time! Hopefully you’ve got all your other spring bulbs in by now, but tulips prefer the late start to avoid tulip fire blight. Tulips used to be mostly annual, but there’s now a lot more varieties which will go on growing year after year, so long as you look after the bulbs, so it’s worth looking out for them. If you’ve got heavy clay soil add a bit of gravel or organic matter to break it up before planting. The rule is twice the width of the bulbs apart and at least twice their height in depth.

r

Winter bedding makes the garden look a bit more cheerful and there’s plenty of variety available, from winter flowering heather to winter flowering pansies, violas, and polyanthus. They may not all flower all the time, but given some decent periods of sun they’ll reward your endeavour. Insulate outdoor pots with bubble wrap and put them up on something – pot feet or bits of brick or even polystyrene - to stop them getting waterlogged. Overwatering is more likely to kill winter flowering plants than anything else. Putting containers flush with a wall will often offer greater protection – but then you also have to check that they don’t dry out!

TOP TIP!

A cheap solar lamp for the greenhouse or a head light like climbers use may be a good investment, just so you can keep checking on outdoor plants during the short dark days without having to wrestle with a torch. 06/11/2018 18:16

Moorland Chatterboxes One bird to have increased dramatically in the Peak District and surrounding moors or heaths, is the stonechat. This used to be here only sporadically and was mainly a winter visitor to higher areas especially with extensive gorse beds. Indeed, the Adult Male more common Stonechat ‘chat’ was the whinchat, socalled after ‘whin’, gorse, or furze, though more often a bird sat atop bracken beds or similar habitats. Sadly, this species seems to have declined and is now rarely seen. On the other hand, the stonechat, called the Devil bird by country folk in times past, is ‘on the up’. The common names can get confusing though and for example, in Scotland, the stonechat with its jet black head and neck is known as the ‘blackcap’. This little bird, a cousin of the robin and the thrush, is a denizen of heaths and moors with a noticeable and distinctive repeated call, ‘u-tack, u-tack-tack’ a bit like two pebbles being brought sharply together. From being an uncommon winter visitor to the Peak District for example, the stonechat is now a regular breeder and a nice addition to the bird fauna for local walks. Lockdown earlier in the year with its reduction in recreational access, will have undoubtedly benefitted the stonechat, its upland cousin the wheatear, and the upland blackbird, or ring ouzel. The persistent calls of the chat gave rise to superstitions and a folk rhyme goes, ‘Stane chack, Deevil tak’! They who harry my nest, Will, never rest, Will meet the pest, De’il break their lang back, Wha my eggs wad tak’, tak’!’ Because of the ceaseless c h a t t i n g (obviously talking incessantly to the Devil!), it was believed that with its bloodMale Ring Ouzel and red breast, the Dunnock stonechat was

indeed the Devil’s bird. It was therefore protected and moreover, if you were so foolish as to take a stonechat’s eggs, then you could expect a dire fate. Indeed, for the deeply superstitious country folk of that time, this warming was effective protection. Stonechats figure in Stonechat literary references too, for example, when W.H. Auden noted the bird in a poem. He described it as ‘a bird stonehaunting, an unquiet bird’, again reflecting its constant chattering. The stonechat’s prominence Young Stonechat and folklore reputation is because of this restless behaviour and the distinctive chatter delivered from prominent perches on gorse, bracken, or leggy heather. In constant conversation with the Devil, and believed to carry a drop of the devil’s blood, the devil would break the back of anyone who harmed a stonechat’s eggs. A little like its lowland cousin the robin, the stonechat is ever on the move. It has favourite perches in and around its moorland territory and these might be on a gritstone boulder, a prickly gorse bush, a spring of purple heather, or perhaps a tall bracken frond. It is from these positions that the bird produces its endless chatter and that family groups of a male, female, and perhaps three or four youngsters excitedly ‘taktak’ to each other. With the distinctive and in the case of the summertime male, very s t r i k i n g plumage, this is a bird which is Female Ring Ouzel hard to overlook.
