Lasting Powers of Attorney Throughout this year's pandemic we have helped many of our vulnerable clients write and register their Powers of Attorney. Power of Attorney ensure your trusted carer can help you with things like paying your bills and coordinating your healthcare.

This includes deciding where the safest location is for you during the upcoming flu season. Your family may want to have you stay with them in the safety of their own home. But without a Power of Attorney, your family cannot legally remove you from the care home. The government has confirmed that writing and signing your Will or Powers of Attorney is an essential reason to leave your home during lock-down. But to keep you safe we are able to help you complete most of the paperwork by post, phone, video call or email.

To get started call us today on 01623 665 050. We are happy to answer questions and give you a formal quote.

From the Editor Yesss, we made it to 2021! Although I suspect many of us are battle scarred from 2020. As I write (pre-Christmas), it’s all feeling very uncertain again in terms of who to have round for Christmas dinner, numbers going up, we’re still in tier 3, what it means for January, will there be another lock-down, what impact will Brexit have and many more questions. However, if there is one thing we have learnt this year it’s how resilient we can be. When it comes to it, we get on with it and make the best of it. Now I’m not saying that it is necessarily going to be fantastically better than 2020 but we have a vaccine and therefore we have hope, which many of us felt bereft of last year! So, with that in mind, I’ve taken all my plans for 2020 that weren’t realised, re-assessed them and rolled forward those which remained! If nothing else, 2020 really has made us take stock of the important things and for that alone, I will be grateful. With that in mind, we thought that Brew Monday is a fantastic initiative that the Samaritans are raising awareness of. It will kick off on 18 January, the third Monday in January, which is usually known as ‘Blue Monday’ and the idea is the Samaritans are turning this day on its head and into something positive by encouraging people to get together over a warming virtual cuppa. Christmas was a disappointment for many us not being able to get together and January can be a very difficult month for so many. So, reach out to a friend, family member or colleague for a virtual cuppa and a chat. It doesn’t have to

be a Monday or a cup of tea, just taking time to really listen to another person could help them work through what’s on their mind. Because now more than ever, sharing a cuppa is more than a drink – it’s about reaching out, checking in and staying connected. In other news, I am ridiculously hopeful that this is the year that we can bring you your events and clubs/community info back…..fingers crossed and we’re looking forward to it! You may also notice a little minor facelift on the front cover; our logo! It’s good to freshen things up sometimes, as you know we’re always looking to bring new things to your Voice Magazines. Fingers crossed that this year is the year of the website – I get nagged daily and I can feel it in my water…..it’s been in the pipeline since 2018 and this is the year…..I can feel it!!!! Happy New Year!

Book Review SJ Parris’s books about medieval master spy Giordano Bruno rightly have a big following, so it’s fun to discover three novellas in one book, perfect for winter reading. Called The Dead of Winter, the book looks at Bruno’s early years as a young Benedictine monk in Naples. As always the tales are beautifully written, and Bruno is always an engaging protagonist. And in case you’re looking for an alternative to the politics of the here and now, these stories also great on the machinations of the church of the time and place and the intrigues surrounding it. If you are already a Bruno fan, they’re a great way of delving back into what turned him into the super sleuth of later full length thrillers. If you’re a newbie, it’s a real taster for the treats to come. The books have been published as one-off slim books before, so check you haven’t already seen them.

2020 – what a year! Whether we look back in anger, regret and with a sense of loss; or with a more positive slant is entirely down to us as individuals. The year itself seems to have flown by, despite the lengthy period we all spent in effective isolation from the end of March onwards.

Many of us, myself included, lost people we love. In my case both parents within 6 weeks of each other, just before lockdown part 1. Neither were COVID related, a fact for which I am extremely grateful. Jobs have been lost, and doubtless more people will face the upheaval of redundancy in 2021. Many of us have had to adapt to working from home. Some having to juggle home schooling with a full workload. But what have we all learned?

Top of the list has to be that we are VERY lucky in the UK to have a National Health Service and that we MUST fight to protect it anyway we can. When you look across to the US and see the death toll from COVID, it makes you realises that we could have been in a similar mess if we didn’t all have FREE access to healthcare. I would add the return to feeling a sense of community with our neighbours to the list too. Certainly in the first lockdown, as we all stood and applauded the NHS every Thursday, it really felt like connections were being made and communities were pulling together. We need more of this! Unfortunately, towards the end of the year, the bonhomie seemed to break down as we were urged to report people for ‘breaking lockdown rules’.

On the work front, how many companies who previously fought against the idea of allowing staff to work from home, suddenly realised it can work, and work really well? And

how many of them will allow flexible working patterns to continue when (if?) things get back to what we used to regard as ‘normal’? There is a potential downside to this scenario though…How many companies, having realised remote working is not only possible but effective, will attempt to outsource work to regions of the world with lower staffing costs? Hopefully not many, especially if they take the time to remember how outsourced call centres put peoples backs up! Another thing to add to the list of ‘what has 2020 given us’ is the word ‘pivot’ – used repeatedly by business owners to indicate they had either changed the way they work, OR found a new and unexpected way to earn an income. Perhaps we should also add the word ‘unprecedented’ to the list too – after all, it must have become the most overused word in the English language during 2020! Whatever we experienced in 2020, is over now and (unless we have access to a time machine) none of us can go back and change anything. All any of us can do is take the positives through into 2021 and face the future with a smile. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Top Tips for Weight Management 1) Measure Food out Daily

5) Weight loss diets & weight clinics:

Using a measuring cup or mug can result in you over feeding your pet by 18-80%. Use scales to accurately weigh the food. To save time, you could weigh a week’s worth out and put each daily allowance into a sandwich bag.

Scarsdale Vets offer free nurse clinics to monitor your pet’s weight, give you tips on weight loss and advise you prescription diets designed to help your pet lose weight. We have had a lot of success using the prescription diets and these are ideal for pets that have more than 1.2kgs (in dogs) or 0.5 – 1kg (in cats) to lose. If your pet is more than 10% overweight feeding a prescription diet will give you the best results and by joining our free nurse clinics you will have the support to get your pet to their target.

2) Check you are feeding the correct amount of food. Look at the back of the container/bag and feed your pet for their ideal weight, not their current weight. Each brand of food will have a different daily allowance so always check the packaging. The amount given is their daily allowance, NOT how much to feed each mealtime. 3) For pets that are always hungry/eat quickly Try increasing the amount of mealtimes. If they usually feed once a day, try increasing to twice daily. Split their daily allowance between how many meals you feed them. If they eat quickly, try using an interactive feeder to slow them down and make mealtimes last longer.

6) Cut down on treats Most have a high calorie content. Please speak with your Veterinary Nurse to discuss healthy alternatives to treats. Daily Exercise for Dogs •

Depending on your dog’s age and any medical conditions, you should ensure they get a regular amount of exercise on a daily basis.

Try to increase the distance younger dogs are walked by 10 – 15 minutes.

For older dogs, try taking them on shorter walks, but more frequently.

4) Try feeding a light/reduced calorie diet If we have advised that your pet needs to lose weight, you could try changing their diet to a ‘light; diet. This is a good idea if your pet is only slightly above their ideal weight or prone to putting on weight, but may not work if they need to lose a few kilos. When changing diets, you should do it gradually over a week or two to prevent upsetting their stomachs.

To advertise please call 01773 549 035

Daily Exercise for Cats •

Try to encourage your cat to play for a couple of minutes at a time. Cats lose interest very quickly, so shorter bursts of play several times a day will help improve their mobility.

Change their toys weekly to stop them losing interest in old toys. There is no need to buy new toys each week, just rotate them so they have a different one each week.

Encourage them to jump and run up and down the stairs. Try feeding them on the stairs by putting a few biscuits on a few of the steps so they have to move around to get them.

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

At the time of writing it has felt like it has been raining non stop for weeks. Hang on, there might be a reason for that! As a result every where is either muddy, boggy or flooded, which makes walking a little bit tough. But our four legged friends still need a good outing so why not pull on your boot and work on those calf muscles! 4 mile circular walk via Pilsley and along the Five Pits Trail. A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 hours. Whilst the majority of the terrain is trails and paths here are some uneven and potentially muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is a must, especially at this time of year.

START: The Five pits trail car park on Hardstoft Road, Pilsley, Derbyshire,

S45 8BL 1.

Walk back through the car park entrance and directly across Hardstoft Road to head north on the Five Pits Trail.

2.

Continue along the trail for approximately 3/4 of a mile, where you will reach a road. Go straight across the road and continue along the trail for another 3/4 of a mile, where you will reach a tarmac lane. Turn left along the lane and pass an industrial building on your left and two stone cottages on your right.

3.

Continue on a path for a short distance until reaching a signposted footpath and a tricky stile on your right. Cross the stile into a field and then turn immediately left keeping the hedge on your left.

4.

Continue to the far side of the field and then bear right to continue along the edge of the field. After only a few yards cross over a stile on your left. Once over the stile turn immediately right keeping the hedge on your right. When the hedge ends continue straight to cross an open field. Keep left of a stump roughly in line with a pylon.

5.

Continue and pass through a gap in a hedge by a marker post and continue straight crossing another field. When nearing some farm buildings on the left and a pond directly in front of you, bear left onto a lane and into a farm yard.

Continue to pass through a wooden gate and then turn sharp right to pass through a second wooden gate. Keeping the hedge on your right climb uphill and continue straight until reaching a road. Turn left along the road and after a short distance turn right through a wooden gate onto a signposted footpath.

10.

Continue straight ahead to cross an open field. Pass through a gap in a hedge and continue straight, now with a hedge on your left. Continue to pass through a wooden gate into a small wooded area. Continue until reaching a road.

11.

At the far side of the field bear left keeping the hedge on your right. After a very short distance turn sharp right and, keeping the hedge on your right, continue towards a farm yard.

12.

Pass over a stile into a farm yard. Continue straight through the farm yard and then through a wooden gate onto a lane. Continue to the end of the lane and onto a road.

13.

Turn left along the road until it bends sharp right. At this point bear left onto another road and then immediately left again, following a signpost on your left reading ’Back Lane leading to Dark Lane.

14.

Continue straight and then onto Dark Lane. Follow Dark Lane until reaching a road. Turn left along the road until reaching the car park on your right.

Continue straight along a fence-lined path to pass through a wooden gate into a small wooded area. Continue until reaching a road.

SOUTH NORMANTON ATHELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB Firstly, Happy New Year! I really hope this magazine finds yourself, your family and friends in good health. At the time of writing we’ve got our first game back to look forward to, a home game against Rowsley, who we faced on the first game of the season. Aside from football though - 2020 I think it’s fair to say was absolutely, abysmal. Not being able to see family or friends, living under restrictions and ever changing guidance, and of course the suffering that so many people have gone through before we can get to this point. I think it’s clear to see that 2021 is a year that many of us wish to create more happy memories and great times with those we appreciate most in our lives. It’s also the year of positivity, after so much doom and gloom it would appear that the end is very much on the horizon and that at some

28

stage this year we’ll be back to some sort of normality. And above football, it’s fair to say that’s what we all want more than anything else. Despite the torrid times though, the togetherness displayed by everyone within the village has been, and I hope, will continue to be something we can all be proud of. There’s still a fair way to go yet by all accounts but, together we’ll get there. As a club we wish you, and your families every happiness and success for 2021 and we hope that we can all enjoy a far better year, Happy New Year, Cheers for reading,

Bess of Hardwick Part 1 - The Ascendancy - Bess of Hardwick was an unusual woman. At a time when women were often considered to be possessions to be traded in marriage to the highest bidder, Bess became one of the most powerful women in Elizabethan times due to a series of fortuitous marriages. Bess was born Elizabeth Hardwick sometime in 1527 (her exact date of birth is unknown) to father, John Hardwick, and his wife Elizabeth Leeke. The Hardwick family had arrived in Derbyshire at some point in the 13th century having moved from Sussex. They farmed land, granted to a Robert Savage, on the borders of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. By the 15th century the Hardwick family had climbed the social ladder somewhat, and were regarded as ‘gentlemen yeomen’ with a small estate. Her first marriage, in around 1543, was to the young (13) heir of a nearby small estate – Robert Barley (Barlow). Robert’s father died soon after the wedding and Robert himself died in December 1544. There is no evidence that the couple actually lived together and obviously there were no children from the marriage. Bess’s claim to inherit was disputed and it was several years after his death before she was awarded both the estate and compensation. Following Robert’s death, Bess, still a teenager at this point, is thought to have become a lady-in-waiting to Frances Grey, mother of Lady Jane Grey. This position allowed her to mingle in top Tudor society. It is likely she met her second husband, Sir William Cavendish whilst in the service of Frances Grey. The wedding took place 20 August 1547 and, at the tender age of 20,

34

elevated her to Lady Cavendish. Sir William, probably at Bess’s urging sold his lands in the south of England and purchased the Chatsworth estate on which they began to build a mansion. Although he was more than 20 years her senior, the marriage was happy and produced eight children – one of whom; William, born 27 December 1552; became the First Earl of Devonshire. His Grandson was created Marquess of Hartington and Duke of Devonshire in 1694 and their descendants still live at Chatsworth House. William died in October 1557 leaving Bess deep in debt. A third marriage in 1559 to Sir William Loe, Captain of the Guard to Queen Elizabeth I, ensued. His position enabled him to vastly reduce her debts and also gave her access to the Queen when she was made Lady of the Bedchamber. Upon his death some 7 years later, with no male heir, he left everything to Bess, and she became one of the wealthiest women in England. Her fourth and final marriage was in 1568 to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. Cleverly Bess managed to ensure that Chatsworth and some of her other estates stayed under her control. Upon his death in 1590 Bess became Dowager Countess of Shrewsbury. She befriended two queens. Elizabeth 1 Queen of England and Mary, Queen of

Scotland (there will be more about those relationship in Part 3). And she married into the nobility. One of her lasting legacies however are the buildings she commissioned as her fortune increased. Little remains of Bess’s home at Chatsworth after her descendant, the 4th Earl of Devonshire entirely remodelled the grand house she had begun building in 1552. There is little doubt however, that without her there would probably have been no Chatsworth for us to visit in the 21st Century. The only part of her scheme to remain unchanged to the present is the Hunting Tower sited in the hills overlooking the house. Perhaps uniquely for the era; when Bess finally separated once and for all from her fourth and final husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury, she had the wealth and resources to live independently. In 1584, following the acrimonious split, she left the Chatsworth estate fearing attack from her husband’s men. She found solace in her old family home at Hardwick which she had purchased in 1583 after the death of the brother; heir to that property; James Hardwick who had died in horrendous debt. Finally free to do what SHE wanted, Bess oversaw the redevelopment of what was a simple Medieval manor house, into a grand and comfortable home for herself, her son William and his family. In 1590 the Earl of Shrewsbury, Bess’s estranged husband, died. She was thus the benefactor of even greater wealth and, fuelled by a passion for building AND immense

Bess of Hardwick: Part 2 – The Legacy - As we saw in the previous article, Bess rose from humble beginnings in rural Derbyshire to become one of the wealthiest and most influential women in the UK. funds to support her ideas, she began to plan for an even grander house on the Hardwick site. The Hardwick Hall we see today was built entirely at the behest of Bess herself and she took great pride and pleasure in overseeing the development. The huge expanses of glass windows were evidence of her wealth and she continued the innovation, first seen at Old Hardwick Hall, of a great hall running the centre of the house and two stories high. Work also continued on the Old Hall which was retained to act as a kind of overspill accommodation for guests and servants. Bess spent the latter years of her life involved in furnishing Hardwick and overseeing the building work there and at Oldcotes where she had commissioned another house for her son William. When she finally died in 1608, at the grand old age of 81, Bess was still regarded as one of the richest and most powerful women in the Kingdom. She was interred in All Saints Church, Derby under an elaborate monument she’d commissioned. When All Saints was demolished and rebuilt to form Derby Cathedral, Bess and her effigy were reinterred. Mike’us sings M

Before anyone takes offence and wishes to email in, please note at the bottom of the piece Mike has kindly provided his credentials and his email address… It’s a new year and the universal hope is that 2021 will be a big improvement on 2020. In light of that, and recognising that it goes against the grain somewhat for me to want to cheer people up – lest you’d forgotten, I’m generally more comfortable being grumpy and miserable – I’ve decided to tell you about a topical incident from a few weeks ago.

Racism......is it what it used to be?

People are just so quick to take offence these days and yet it seems that what many regard as stereotyping is often closer to the truth than they’re prepared to accept. I was out shopping in Sutton recently when I came across this bizarre conversation. It started off reasonably enough when this middle aged chap asked one of the assistants in which aisle he could find Irish sausages. The young lady, putting her recent customer service training to good effect, looked up from what she was doing, smiled, said hello and then asked the gentleman if he was indeed an Irishman. At this, the mood changed and my ears pricked up. The guy had clearly taken exception to what the young girl had said and with a disapproving look replied, “As it happens, I am, but let me ask you something. If I’d been looking for Italian sausage, would you have asked me if I was Italian? If I was after Bratwurst, would you have asked me if I was German? If I’d come in for a kosher hot dog, would you have then enquired whether or not I was a Jew?”

“If I had asked for Chorizo”, the man continued with barely concealed anger, “would you have asked if I was Spanish?” Finally, as quite a crowd of gawping eavesdroppers listened in, the man asked “If I was wanting Kielbasa sausage, would you have assumed that I was Polish?” “Well, to be honest”, the young lady interjected, “no, I probably wouldn’t.” “Well why in the name of Heaven then”, came the exasperated response, “when I asked for Irish sausages, did you feel the need to ask me if I was Irish?” “Quite simple really”, came her calm reply, “you’re in Halfords sir!” ______________________________________ Before anyone takes offence and I start getting irate comments passed on to me via mike. musings@outlook.com you ought to know that having been born in Ireland, raised in Scotland and made an adult choice to follow Notts County, I know better than most that you just can’t put a price on the ability to laugh at oneself!

A number of customers had by now gathered in the next aisle, and like me, were intrigued as to how this was going to end.

20/01/2017 05:

Grebes are absolutely stunning. Rare species include Slavonian and black-necked grebes and both may occur in the Peak District and north Derbyshire but only occasionally. The former is a winter visitor to reservoirs and the latter a very uncommon breeder in smaller lowland lakes. The blacknecked is an amazing looking bird with jetDabchick black head, bright red eyes, and spectacular golden ‘eyebrows’. However, come winter they lose their looks and revert to dull whites, greys, and browns. This means that in order fully appreciate grebes you really need to see them in full breeding plumage. Our two common species are the little grebe or dabchick, and its bigger cousin the great crested grebe. The names say it all, and the latter is a relatively large bird about twenty inches long, and during spring and summer it has a dramatically distinctive crest. The showy adornment is necessary for the grebe’s elaborate courtship and pair-bonding. During the early breeding season, the birds spend a lot of time face-to-face and shaking their heads at each other. The male offers the female bits of nesting material or perhaps a fish as an enticement and to maintain the female’s interest. The pair-bonding displays are elaborate and time-consuming, so birds spend long periods preening and posing. Great crested grebes eat fish and were badly affected by the use of persistent pesticides such as DDT. By the 1970s, their numbers had plummeted; but like many other bird species populations increased as these chemicals were phased out. Recovery amounts to natural ‘rewilding’ with predators reestablishing populations in depleted ecosystems. Recovery is aided by habitat creation and restoration projects such as Poolsbrook Country Park at Staveley in North Derbyshire and elsewhere across the region. Clean rivers and water-supply Dabchick reservoirs across

the Peak provide ideal habitat too. Furthermore, in smaller ponds and lakes, on canals, and in rivers there is our other common grebe, the dabchick. I must admit that that the little grebe (or ‘Dabchick’ as it is commonly known) is one of my favourite birds being both full of character and also very approachable. At about half the size Great Crested Grebe of a moorhen it is our smallest British grebe. Feeding on both small fish and aquatic invertebrates like crustaceans and insect larvae, these diving waterbirds are accomplished underwater swimmers. During summer they are highly territorial; a pair establishing and defending a territory along a linear watercourse like a Little Grebe canal or river. Here their nests are constructed of pondweed and other vegetation on floating platforms. In breeding plumage the adult birds are brightly coloured and also very vocal with a loud ‘whinnying’ song. Indeed, they are often heard before they are seen. But when winter arrives the little grebe assumes a gentle mix of subdued buff, off-white, and black; the dark bill is pale grey but retaining a bright yellow patch at its base. If the winter stays mild, then next year’s breeding numbers will rise again.

Gorgeous Grebes

GARDENS

Gardener’s Calendar Hellebores may be starting to poke their flower heads up if the weather has been fairly mild. Varieties have been developed which have a more upright habit but most hellebore blooms droop by nature so it’s worth cutting back the largest leaves so you can actually see these gem-like beauties. If some of the leaves have black blotches take them off too, as they are diseased and will weaken the plant. If you have a wood chipper, you have a way of using your discarded Christmas tree. Pine chips make great mulch for ericaceous plants such as azaleas, heathers and rhododendrons. Or you could always find somewhere to temporarily ‘plant’ the tree and hang fat or bird feeders for our birdy friends.

r

Plant out hyacinths or paperwhites used as Christmas indoor decorations and they will flower in the garden in future. Take the flower off, let the foliage die down and within a couple of years they will be producing winter and spring colour outdoors.

TOP TIP!

Heavy snow can damage bushes and trees, forcing branches to splay or even break. Take a photo for posterity, then brush it off. 06/11/2018 18:16
