Lasting Powers of Attorney Throughout this year's pandemic we have helped many of our vulnerable clients write and register their Powers of Attorney. Power of Attorney ensure your trusted carer can help you with things like paying your bills and coordinating your healthcare.

This includes deciding where the safest location is for you during the upcoming flu season. Your family may want to have you stay with them in the safety of their own home. But without a Power of Attorney, your family cannot legally remove you from the care home. The government has confirmed that writing and signing your Will or Powers of Attorney is an essential reason to leave your home during lock-down. But to keep you safe we are able to help you complete most of the paperwork by post, phone, video call or email.

To get started call us today on 01623 665 050. We are happy to answer questions and give you a formal quote.

From the Editor Yay, we’ve staggered through to the end of the year! However, it’s not the usual excitement at the end of the year that we’ve all come to expect, is it? This year, many of us have sacrificed our livelihoods, our relationships with loved ones, our businesses or jobs, our metal health, all whilst trying to dodge contracting a novel virus. My heart goes out to those on the front line – who have sacrificed all of that and, in some cases, their lives too. It has truly been tough for everyone. What’s the analogy doing the rounds – we are all in the same storm but in different boats? It’s very true isn’t it? Nobody is unscathed from this year, its battle wounds will run deep for the years to come, not least financially as many say we will be paying for this for years. However, what has warmed the cockles during this turgid year, is the support that our communities (and our very special readers) have given to local businesses. I’ve seen it happening more this year than any other in the last 10yrs of producing Voice Mags and it is absolutely marvellous that everyone is onboard with buying local where possible and I think Christmas will be no exception to this. So, thank you on behalf of myself and all local businesses, we appreciate it. On that note, as you know, I always try and avoid politics; it is not my place and this magazine will continue to remain politically neutral, but throughout the ongoing barrage of rubbishness one hot potato hit the news recently that I could not make sense of. What so many of us saw as a simple principle, ‘that no child should go hungry as no one gets to choose their parents’, others saw as a political issue to be debated and argue over. Meanwhile the rest of us got on with it, and people and businesses across the land acted out of kindness and dipped into their own pockets to provide meals for those children who needed them. I can think of several local businesses (advertisers past and present) that have stepped up to this plight. All those wonderful people didn’t ask who was going to pay for it, nor did they point the finger at those who did not or could not, they just did the right thing. In the end a small Christmas miracle happened and, after all the finger pointing had stopped, the politicians all stopped talking and good old common sense finally shone through so that no child should go hungry during the Christmas holidays, so thankyou to our local businesses, not all heroes wear capes!

So, a big shout out and pat on the back to us all for getting through as best we can and, let’s drop kick 2020 out of the calendar and raise a glass to 2021 at the end of this month…..it can’t be any worse – can it!? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Emily x P.S. Thank you to all the eagle-eyed readers out there who spotted the mistake on some of our front pages last month. I’ve made Liam write ‘I must remember(ance) to check my spelling’ 100 times on the white board life away either and I know you shouldn’t!!). P.P.S. Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

It’s likely to be a season with a difference… Not everyone will experience a ‘Happy Christmas’

HAVE YOU MISSED CHRISTMAS? Some folks even miss the point of Christmas. Oh, decorations are displayed. Parties are attended. Gifts are bought and exchanged, but somehow it never dawns on them that it is Someone’s birthday and that someone is Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:21 says, “She shall bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins.” Have you missed Christmas because you’ve missed Jesus Christ? He is God’s gift to you. Jesus Christ the Saviour came to forgive us, cleanse us of all our sins and give us a real reason for living and celebrating Christmas. We invite you to visit our on-line Christmas service on Facebook or our website. southnormantoncommunitychurch.co.uk Why not invite your family and friends to our outdoor service (restrictions permitting) on Sunday 20th December at 5pm in the Postmill car park and let’s celebrate the miracle, the joy and the wonder of Christmas together. Dealing with the Unexpected If there’s one thing that 2020 should have taught us, it is the need to be adaptable! There we were chugging along in our lives and businesses when all of a sudden BOOM, we’re confined to barracks for an unspecified amount of time whilst a ‘deadly’ pandemic raged around us.

Some people saw the enforced down time as a chance to reevaluate their lives, take online courses, get fit, read more, write more, DO more.

to how it was pre COVID-19. Too many bonds have been broken. Too many lives lost. Too many lies told. Too many jobs and livelihoods destroyed.

Others became lost without the daily routines of getting up, getting out and going to work and, instead of finding useful things to fill the void, chose to watch TV and spend inordinate amounts of time on social media.

We can however look to a new way of living. Lockdown Part 1 appeared to bring local communities together, we stood in the street and cheered the NHS. We checked up on our neighbours and helped where we could.

Which camp did you fall under?

This is the lesson to remember; not how the Government dealt (or didn’t) with the ‘unprecedented’ set of circumstances, but how local communities banded together.

For most of us, it was probably a combination of the two. Some days a struggle to get out of PJs and off the sofa; others raring to go and planning to learn a foreign language and how to play the guitar all whilst planning a literary masterpiece! None of us know what is going to happen next, Lockdown Part 2 (which sounds like a film franchise) came into effect 2 November – allegedly for a month – it could be for much longer. How we get through whatever is thrown at us next is entirely down to US. Choose to BE and DO more.

Let’s hold onto that sense of community and belonging because; as the saying goes; ‘we are stronger together’. No matter how ‘socially isolated’ we are forced to be there is always a way to connect with others – a phone call, video call, chat through a window or out in the fresh air…let people know you care. No one can take that away from us. Here’s to 2021 being a calmer year.

OR turn back into a couch potato. It doesn’t matter what any Government tells us to do, it matters how we as individuals deal with it. We have to accept that it is unlikely that our way of living will ever return

Before lockdown struck, we were able to sit down with Mick and NAME from Gears of Goodwill. They won’t want me to talk about them, but the guys are so passionate about what they do. They go where so many others do not and without them… Having spoken to the guys, they were able to tell me that providing support for homeless people during the pandemic, with the restrictions that have been put in place has been incredibly difficult. The normal street kitchens have been badly hit, with the threat of huge fines for breaking restrictions on people gathering. Also, many of the homeless have been moved out of the cities and towns so the team at Gears of Goodwill have to spend a lot of time tracking them down to provide food and support.

One of Gears of Goodw ill’s stated aims is to have a charity shop and cafe with somewhere for homeless people to have a shower and a hot meal and get advice. Hav ing spoken to the guys involved I know this is just the start. They really need a good-sized buildin g they can convert and use as a Day Centre and potentially offer some overnight accommodat ion. With a dedicated space, as well as being able to provide food, a warm shower, support and friendship they team would be able to develo p facilities to provide rehab support and skil ls and training courses. Just imagine the impact this could have, so if you can help or know any one who may be able to help please reach out , your kindness really could help save and cha nge lives.

We’re so much more than just a DOg shop! With the days getting shorter, temperatures dropping and travel restrictions on the rise again, you may be spending a lot more time than usual indoors, be wanting to go out less and interacting with fewer people. Well, we’re here to help. We offer a free local home delivery service, but it’s so much more than just that. We can provide advice, guidance and support for you and your dog over the telephone. You can then place your order, which we’ll deliver directly to your door for free. Whilst we’re there we don’t have to rush off, but can have a chat about anything further you might need for your dog and even bring addition products (such as harnesses, leads, collars and toys) so you’re able to see them before you decide to buy. All you need to do is give us a call and we’ll do the rest.

PET SERVICES

TESTIMONIAL Setting up a business looking after customers pets while they are at work or on holiday seemed like a good idea at the time - had that time not been a few weeks before the first lockdown earlier this year! Yet as I write this we are under another lockdown that may or may not have ended by the time you read this. Despite this I have continued to offer walking and other pet services and have many satisfied clients and pets that I love looking after daily, weekly or just on the odd occasions. However, it seems that dog training is needed more than ever now as a result of so many puppies bought this year before and during the first lockdown, that didn’t get the normal social interactions they so desperately need in their first few months. As has been widely reported in the press, there has also been an influx of puppy farm dogs to meet the demand for lockdown companionship, many of these haven’t been bred safely or bought up in a ‘normal’ litter with their mum, something that is so important to their development. As well as any immediate behavioural issues that arise, the longer term welfare of these animals should be considered when life starts to return to normal and people get back to their normal working life, with not as much time on their hands to look after their new companions. So if you have a rabbit that needs feeding, a cat that needs letting out or an unruly doggie needing some guidance then please give me a call. Remember – a pet is for life, not just for lockdown. Safe. ToStay advertise please call 01773 549 035

Scott came to look after my indoor cats George and Penelope, back in the summer when I went on Holiday. He made a home visit so he could meet the cats and see what was required whilst I was away. He made visits once daily. The lovely updates and photos really put my mind at ease, I was totally reassured that my cats were happy at home whilst I was away. After his last visit to my house I got a full report sent to my email About Scott’s visits whilst I was away. Scott is very friendly, professional and a very caring person, I will definitely be asking Scott again whilst I’m away to look after my cats. Thank you, Scott, Danielle Briggs Alfreton

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

Each year we try and pick a really nice walk for our Christmas edition and I think this walk is perfect. The walk makes great use of a variety of bridleways, trails and lanes, taking in some fantastic views. The walk starts just outside Strelley Village on the road to All Saints Church. You head out on country lanes across open land, before joining a path alongside a gorgeous, disused section of the Nottinghamshire Canal. From here you pass Cossall Marsh Village before returning along a series of lanes to pass back under the M1 and, one of the highlights of the walk, ‘The Stones of Monks Way’ beside All Saints Church.

6-mile circular walk from Strelley Village

A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 ½ - 3 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

START: Lay-by on Main Street between Strelley Village and All Saints Church, Nottingham. Near NG8 6PE

Beginning on the corner by the lay-by. Walk past a metal barrier along a signposted bridleway.

Follow the main as it bends around to the left and past a lane on the right. After some distance ignore a footpath straight ahead and instead follow the main bridleway around to the right to continue ahead with trees on your right and open views to your left. Continue for quite some distance, crossing straight over a crossroads of paths/lanes to keep ahead with a hedge on your left and open views on your right. Then, after some distance, pass through a small metal gate and immediately onto a crossroads of paths/lanes. Turn right here, along a lane signposted for

Follow the lane around to the left, then after a short distance follow the lane around to the right. The lane narrows to a path with trees on your right and open views to your left. Continue for some distance passing a marker post on your right-hand side and along a footpath lined by trees. Continue ahead for some distance as the path jinks left then right, then continue until eventually the path widens to a lane and you reach a large metal gate directly in front of you. Pass through a gap beside the gate and onto a road. Cross the road diagonally to the to pick up a footpath next

Book Review

Kamila Shamsie’s novel Home Fire has a story which could have been lifted from a newspaper, and certainly from the files of MI5. It’s a kind of thriller, a Greek tragedy in a topical modern setting, a tale of love and hate and politics and faith. It runs from the suburbs of London to the heart of Syria. A complex love story worked around two sisters and their jihadist brother and their connection to the naïve son of a UK politician, who seems more interested in showboating than the need to do the right thing. It’s a clever and in places funny narrative, but it’s also psychologically very shrewd. What are people prepared to do in the name of love? It’s also not afraid to look beyond the headlines at the darkness of what happens to people when they get caught up, for whatever reasons, in politics on a world-wide scale. This is the political against the personal. The role of the state against family and love. Best of all it helps you understand how things might get to the pitch they are at now, both in this country and elsewhere and how easy and dangerous it is to fall for prejudice. It also moves at a terrific pace – you can easily imagine it as a film - and is both gripping and emotionally powerful. Home Fire was a finalist in both the Costa and Booker Prizes and was a worthy Women’s Prize for Fiction winner.

SOUTH NORMANTON ATHELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB Firstly I really hope this magazine finds yourself, your family and friends in good health. It’s been a relatively quiet month with the lockdown putting an end to a lot of things, football being one of them. The big thing a few of us are trying to focus on now is getting a plan in place to start getting youth teams on board. This is obviously a logical step for the club to take, and another step closer to the level we want the club to be within the community. We’re keen, however, not to just bring in anyone. It needs to be coaches and volunteers who really buy into what we’re trying to do. At the time of writing, nothing has changed with regards to the end of the lockdown date. And we’re planning to return to training and matches on 2nd December. This could of course, change. The best way to find out our fixtures will be through the social media channels. I’d attach a photo of Decembers fixtures but they’re so up in the air I’d say at best, there’s a 50% chance of the schedule staying as it is in December. With games

38

potentially being swapped round to accommodate the difference in tier restrictions and various other reasons. I’d like to take a bit of time to mention the villages Gala Crew, and all the volunteers involved, who, all year have been exceptional in helping create a support network across the village so those who need help with shopping, pharmacy visits, and just someone to chat to, know there’s help available. The work they’ve done all year has been exceptional. And they’re only as good as the people who’ve kindly volunteered their time to support others. The recent poppy garden and upcoming Xmas Display are other examples of the hard work and dedication the gala crew and its team have towards making our village something to be proud of. Hopefully, we as a football club can also be another feather in South Normanton’s cap. All the best, stay safe, and have a very Merry Xmas.

Mike’us sings M

‘Tis the season to be......jolly.

...or is it?

Well, despite everything that 2020 has thrown at us, I’m sure that like me, you’ll be ignoring the strange times we’re experiencing and making the most of socially distanced life over the festive period. It may be a bit late for some of you, but if you’re desperately searching for last minute bargains for that someone special in your life, here are a few ideas. They could be just what you’re looking for. Puppies (providing they’re not just for Christmas of course!) 1 - Six month old mongrel. One half Cocker Spaniel and other half sneaky neighbour’s dog. 1 - Yorkshire Terrier. Two years old. House trained and eats anything. Especially keen on kids. 1 - Two month old mongrel. Mother is a Kennel Club registered German Shepherd. Father unknown, but clearly able to leap over very high fences. Washer & Dryer. Only three months old and hardly used. Available for £85 ono. Family off to join a nudist colony. Wedding Dress – worn just the once...............by mistake! Complete set (45 volumes) of Encyclopedia Britannica. They are in excellent condition and can be yours for £150. They’re no longer required as owner has recently married and wife knows everything. All enquiries to be made via mike.musings@ outlook.com

While thinking about Christmas, you’ll be aware that many shops, on more than one occasion this year, have had to ration sales of certain products because of panic buying. Although it hasn’t been widely publicised, you ought to be aware that the main supermarkets have introduced limits on some of the items that are traditionally popular and good sellers over the coming weeks. As a public spirited individual, I’m happy to pass on to you the specific measures that are being put in place. ASDA – 2 x hand sanitisers, a single 4 x pack of toilet rolls and 12 mince pies TESCO – 1 x hand sanitiser, a single 4 x pack of toilet rolls and one 6kg frozen turkey WAITROSE – 2 x lobsters, 6 x quails eggs and 100g of Foie Gras ALDI – 1 x hand drill, 2 x pink sports bras, 3 x trumpets, 6 x Stollen Cakes, but just the one wetsuit. I hope that by making you aware of these limits in advance, you’ll be able to avoid disappointment. and regardless of whatever restrictions are in place at the time, have a good (and safe) Christmas. You can look forward (?) to more useful announcements in the New Year.

20/01/2017 05:

Winding its sinuous way through the Derbyshire Peak District, the River Derwent is a wonderful natural artery for wildlife and as such forms a ‘green corridor connecting the uplands Fallow Deer of the Dark Peak to the dales and valleys further south. Once the river has reached Chatsworth House and Park its full glory becomes obvious and it is a vital, living part of one of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions, the ‘Palace of the Peak’. At Chatsworth the Derwent is home and habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife species, particularly birds. Grey herons are nowadays ubiquitous along the watercourse and always easy to spot. Kingfishers on the other hand are present but often quite secretive. However, I did spot one flying along the riverbank in front of the House; diving for fish and then landing on the bank to survey its territory. For such a brightly coloured bird, the ‘jewel of the riverbank’, they do hide away surprisingly well! Dippers are also quite common here at Chatsworth and pairs will jealously guard their chosen territorial stretch of the river. They breed quite early in the season and can be heard singing in February and March. Other fish-eating birds on the river now include goosanders and occasional red-breasted mergansers, but also cormorants. These birds which look almost prehistoric were once rare at inland sites such as Chatsworth. However, they have now recovered from persecution and pollution to become frequent and almost commonplace. They love to sit out on exposed dead branches of old trees and dry their wings. Habitually used, these trees become marked with splashes of white cormorant droppings.

Fallow Deer

The river and its flood meadows also provide habitat for birds moving through on migration such

as a flock of the ‘winter thrushes’, the redwings and fieldfares. Pied wagtails frequently gather in good numbers along the riverbanks and on shingle areas in the Pied Wagtail river. They love the extensive grasslands of the short-grazed park where they mingle with fallow deer, red deer, and sheep. Their constant activity, high-pitched calls, and flickering tails suggest a bird that exudes energy and especially so as they gather in groups prior to going to their chosen night-time roosting sites. Grey Heron Wagtails are very adept at finding cosy, sheltered spots to roost overnight. At my university’s citycentre campus they gather in shrubberies near a huge hot air vent – and believe me, there is plenty of hot air given out! At Chatsworth Park, watching the riverside birds is complemented by chance to see deer at close quarters. In the late afternoon as light is fading the fallow deer drop down to the riverside and if you are really lucky they may troop across the river to look almost like caribou on an Alaskan migration. The Peak is a wonderful place for nature.

GARDENS

Gardener’s Calendar

If you’ve got shrubs which have become overgrown or misshapen or trees which need cutting back, this is the time to do it, while the sap is less active and the plant is less likely to bleed and become weakened. Cut out dead or diseased wood first then take out stems which are crossing to create a better shape. Remember to always cut above a bud, not too close but not too far and sloping away from the bud at a gentle angle to avoid rotting. Ponds can be cleared of leaves and rotting vegetation, but leave everything you have cleared on the side for a day or two to allow any pond beasties to crawl back in. You don’t need to keep a pond ice free if you don’t have fish, but if you want to give birds access to the pond try floating a ball on the surface. Any wind should push it around and stop ice forming.

r

While there’s less to do outside, don’t forget to keep an eye on houseplants. Most appreciate a rest from flowering in winter so you don’t need to feed them unless they are flowering. You should also cut back on watering. Let the compost surface dry slightly between watering and don’t leave them standing in water as this will cause root rot. Most don’t like being near open fires, draughts or being exposed to frosty windowsills.

Merry Xmas folks. If you’re like us and found this year hard going, just remember next year’s garden TOP TIP!

If you’re cleaning plots and beds outside only compost healthy material – otherwise you’re transferring disease from one season to the next. 06/11/2018 18:16
