GEARS OF GOODWILL

Before lockdown struck, we were able to sit down with Mick and NAME from Gears of Goodwill. They won’t want me to talk about them, but the guys are so passionate about what they do. They go where so many others do not and without them…

Having spoken to the guys, they were able to tell me that providing support for homeless people during the pandemic, with the restrictions that have been put in place has been incredibly difficult. The normal street kitchens have been badly hit, with the threat of huge fines for breaking restrictions on people gathering. Also, many of the homeless have been moved out of the cities and towns so the team at Gears of Goodwill have to spend a lot of time tracking them down to provide food and support.

Who are Gears of Goodwill

As the name may suggest the foundations of the group come from a group of bikers who have been giving their time to help some of the most vulnerable people in society, the homeless. The group are also very welcoming to non-bikers and much of the support comes from non-bikers.

One of the main ways Gears of Goodwill helps has been running a street kitchen on Fridays in Derby. Whilst this work has been hard hit by Covid-19 restrictions it has not stopped the team doing everything they can to help those most in need and they are still going out providing hot food, drinks and sandwiches, giving out clothing and sleeping bags directly to those in need. However, equally important is the genuine friendship they give – providing someone to talk to.

Gears of Goodwill work hard to build links with other groups and charities. Tackling this problem needs a everyone to pull together.

Appeal for Donations

If you want to help or make a donation the best way is to make contact through the Facebook page GearsofGoodwill. The main items Gears of Goodwill are looking for are tinned foods, sandwich fillers and vegetables for soup. They also always need sleeping bags and tents.

Building Appeal

One of Gears of Goodwill’s stated aims is to have a charity shop and cafe with somewhere for homeless people to have a shower and a hot meal and get advice. Having spoken to the guys involved I know this is just the start. They really need a good-sized building they can convert and use as a Day Centre and potentially offer some overnight accommodation. With a dedicated space, as well as being able to provide food, a warm shower, support and friendship they team would be able to develop facilities to provide rehab support and skills and training courses.
