Yay, we’ve staggered through to the end of the year! However, it’s not the usual excitement at the end of the year that we’ve all come to expect, is it?
no child should go hungry during the Christmas holidays, so thankyou to our local businesses, not all heroes wear capes!
This year, many of us have sacrificed our livelihoods, our relationships with loved ones, our businesses or jobs, our metal health, all whilst trying to dodge contracting a novel virus. My heart goes out to those on the front line – who have sacrificed all of that and, in some cases, their lives too.
So, a big shout out and pat on the back to us all for getting through as best we can and, let’s drop kick 2020 out of the calendar and raise a glass to 2021 at the end of this month…..it can’t be any worse – can it!?
It has truly been tough for everyone. What’s the analogy doing the rounds – we are all in the same storm but in different boats? It’s very true isn’t it? Nobody is unscathed from this year, its battle wounds will run deep for the years to come, not least financially as many say we will be paying for this for years. However, what has warmed the cockles during this turgid year, is the support that our communities (and our very special readers) have given to local businesses. I’ve seen it happening more this year than any other in the last 10yrs of producing Voice Mags and it is absolutely marvellous that everyone is onboard with buying local where possible and I think Christmas will be no exception to this. So, thank you on behalf of myself and all local businesses, we appreciate it. On that note, as you know, I always try and avoid politics; it is not my place and this magazine will continue to remain politically neutral, but throughout the ongoing barrage of rubbishness one hot potato hit the news recently that I could not make sense of. What so many of us saw as a simple principle, ‘that no child should go hungry as no one gets to choose their parents’, others saw as a political issue to be debated and argue over. Meanwhile the rest of us got on with it, and people and businesses across the land acted out of kindness and dipped into their own pockets to provide meals for those children who needed them. I can think of several local businesses (advertisers past and present) that have stepped up to this plight. All those wonderful people didn’t ask who was going to pay for it, nor did they point the finger at those who did not or could not, they just did the right thing. In the end a small Christmas miracle happened and, after all the finger pointing had stopped, the politicians all stopped talking and good old common sense finally shone through so that
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Haddon Hall Derbyshire is blessed with a plethora of stately homes and grand houses, but my personal favourite is Haddon Hall, just outside of Bakewell on the road to Matlock. Unlike some of the grander mansions Haddon retains the feeling of ‘real people’ having lived there; the rooms are of a scale where it is easy to imagine yourself living a life – if not of complete luxury then at least a fair degree of comfort. Haddon Hall holds a special place in my heart because it is the last place I took my mum for a day out before the ravages of Alzheimer’s rendered her unable to enjoy such a trip. She became more animated than I’d seen for a while and thoroughly enjoyed herself. The house itself has its roots in the 11th Century; William Peverel (Peveril) was granted the ‘Manor of Haddon’ by William the Conqueror following the ‘Domesday’ survey. He didn’t hold onto it for long though as it was ‘forfeited to the Crown’ in 1153 and then passed to one the Peveril’s tenants – the Avenell family. Eventually, Sir Richard Vernon claimed the hall in 1170 when he married Alice Avenell. The building we see today was mainly constructed by the Vernon family; the exceptions being the Peveril Tower, part of the chapel and the Long Gallery – an addition dating to the 16th century. Haddon became part of the Earl of Rutland’s holding following the marriage of Dorothy Vernon to John Manners (second son of the then Earl) and John’s inheritance of the Earldom in 1565. What makes Haddon Hall so unique is that unlike many other country houses and stately homes it missed out on the renovation frenzies so beloved of the Georgian and Victorian eras and thus remains almost frozen in the 16th Century. Haddon escaped only because the
Manners family chose to live in their main seat – Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire. So for over two hundred years the house remained empty and unchanged. From around 1912 the 9th Duke of Rutland, realising the importance of Haddon as an example of untouched 16th century architecture, began to sympathetically restore the house. Where original features could not be reused craftsmen used local wood and stone to replace them. Every care was taken to ensure the building and contents were restored to the way they would have appeared when originally made or constructed. One feature – the frescos in the chapel, dating to the 15th century – were covered by layers of whitewash for centuries until a clean up in 1858 revealed them again. They were subsequently restored in the 20th century. The garden’s at Haddon are also gorgeous and the halls location, raised above the River Wye, makes for some wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Visiting Haddon Hall really does feel like stepping back in time; whether you choose to wander around alone or join a guided tour, you can’t help but succumb to the quiet old beauty of the place.

Dealing with the Unexpected If there’s one thing that 2020 should have taught us, it is the need to be adaptable! There we were chugging along in our lives and businesses when all of a sudden BOOM, we’re confined to barracks for an unspecified amount of time whilst a ‘deadly’ pandemic raged around us.
Some people saw the enforced down time as a chance to reevaluate their lives, take online courses, get fit, read more, write more, DO more.
to how it was pre COVID-19. Too many bonds have been broken. Too many lives lost. Too many lies told. Too many jobs and livelihoods destroyed.
Others became lost without the daily routines of getting up, getting out and going to work and, instead of finding useful things to fill the void, chose to watch TV and spend inordinate amounts of time on social media.
We can however look to a new way of living. Lockdown Part 1 appeared to bring local communities together, we stood in the street and cheered the NHS. We checked up on our neighbours and helped where we could.
Which camp did you fall under?
This is the lesson to remember; not how the Government dealt (or didn’t) with the ‘unprecedented’ set of circumstances, but how local communities banded together.
For most of us, it was probably a combination of the two. Some days a struggle to get out of PJs and off the sofa; others raring to go and planning to learn a foreign language and how to play the guitar all whilst planning a literary masterpiece! None of us know what is going to happen next, Lockdown Part 2 (which sounds like a film franchise) came into effect 2 November – allegedly for a month – it could be for much longer. How we get through whatever is thrown at us next is entirely down to US. Choose to BE and DO more.
Let’s hold onto that sense of community and belonging because; as the saying goes; ‘we are stronger together’. No matter how ‘socially isolated’ we are forced to be there is always a way to connect with others – a phone call, video call, chat through a window or out in the fresh air…let people know you care. No one can take that away from us. Here’s to 2021 being a calmer year.
OR turn back into a couch potato. It doesn’t matter what any Government tells us to do, it matters how we as individuals deal with it. We have to accept that it is unlikely that our way of living will ever return

KIDS & FAMILIES
Jo, at Kip, helped me to see that I wasn’t struggling as much as I thought with my GCSEs. Hi I am Amy and I am nearly 15 and in year 10 at school this year starting my GCSEs like so many of you. I missed so much during lockdown and the school closures and it was really bothering me. However, compared to many I am in a good place with my family but I was worrying about my English GCSEs as my spelling is bad and I can never come up with good things to write about.
me, she asked how I was getting on with my GCSEs particularly Maths and English. She was so nice so I told her I was not so good at my English and some of the Maths was hard and that I had missed so much I was really scared I wouldn’t get the grades to get into the 6th form college to do A levels. I want to be a teacher so I have to get good grades for both GCSE English and Maths.
I have a little brother, Kris, he is only 9 and not doing so well at school so my grandma decided to pay for him to go to Kip to try and catch up. He started in the summer as preparation for going back to school and he is doing great. He has already improved his reading, even I can see that. Anyway I have to take him to Kip for his lesson on a Tuesday, which he loves, and while he is in there I sit and wait and do some of my homework. Jo is really nice and often around. She asks me about what homework I am doing and even let me sit at a spare desk once because they had one free to make it easier for me to do my work.
Jo said that if I wanted to she could do a free assessment in both subjects and then we could see if I really did have gaps or if it was just because I was only starting in Year 10. As she said, you don’t know everything when you start a subject, it comes gradually until you look back and see how much you know. My parents agreed. I was really scared in case I was really bad at them.
A few weeks ago some kids came in and went into their lessons. I could hear loads of laughing and some clapping at one point. I asked Jo what they were clapping for and she said that one of the students had just achieved reading 100 words. From the 15 or so when he first joined in the summer. Kris told me all about it on the way home. The following week I got really stuck on my English and asked Jo for help. After she helped
I did the tests and Jo sat down and explained that I was actually pretty good in Maths and my English spelling was a bit weak but my overall writing scores were fine. She said that they could help me if that was what was needed but right now I was doing ok. I felt so happy to know I wasn’t behind at all and that if I did get lower marks in the end of year tests or found a particular subject hard to understand they could help me with a few lessons on just that. I don’t think I need it right now but I love knowing Jo is there if I need her in the coming months. Well done Sophie!
If you think you need help with your GCSE’s why not ask your parents to get Jo to do an assessment for you. Maybe they or your grandparents could pay for it like mine did for my little brother. Good luck! Amy.

Winding its sinuous way through the Derbyshire Peak District, the River Derwent is a wonderful natural artery for wildlife and as such forms a ‘green corridor connecting the uplands Fallow Deer of the Dark Peak to the dales and valleys further south. Once the river has reached Chatsworth House and Park its full glory becomes obvious and it is a vital, living part of one of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions, the ‘Palace of the Peak’. At Chatsworth the Derwent is home and habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife species, particularly birds. Grey herons are nowadays ubiquitous along the watercourse and always easy to spot. Kingfishers on the other hand are present but often quite secretive. However, I did spot one flying along the riverbank in front of the House; diving for fish and then landing on the bank to survey its territory. For such a brightly coloured bird, the ‘jewel of the riverbank’, they do hide away surprisingly well! Dippers are also quite common here at Chatsworth and pairs will jealously guard their chosen territorial stretch of the river. They breed quite early in the season and can be heard singing in February and March. Other fish-eating birds on the river now include goosanders and occasional red-breasted mergansers, but also cormorants. These birds which look almost prehistoric were once rare at inland sites such as Chatsworth. However, they have now recovered from persecution and pollution to become frequent and almost commonplace. They love to sit out on exposed dead branches of old trees and dry their wings. Habitually used, these trees become marked with splashes of white cormorant droppings.
Fallow Deer
The river and its flood meadows also provide habitat for birds moving through on migration such
as a flock of the ‘winter thrushes’, the redwings and fieldfares. Pied wagtails frequently gather in good numbers along the riverbanks and on shingle areas in the Pied Wagtail river. They love the extensive grasslands of the short-grazed park where they mingle with fallow deer, red deer, and sheep. Their constant activity, high-pitched calls, and flickering tails suggest a bird that exudes energy and especially so as they gather in groups prior to going to their chosen night-time roosting sites. Grey Heron Wagtails are very adept at finding cosy, sheltered spots to roost overnight. At my university’s citycentre campus they gather in shrubberies near a huge hot air vent – and believe me, there is plenty of hot air given out! At Chatsworth Park, watching the riverside birds is complemented by chance to see deer at close quarters. In the late afternoon as light is fading the fallow deer drop down to the riverside and if you are really lucky they may troop across the river to look almost like caribou on an Alaskan migration. The Peak is a wonderful place for nature.

GARDENS
The Derbyshire Derwent – a wildlife artery through the Peak
Gardener’s Calendar
If you’ve got shrubs which have become overgrown or misshapen or trees which need cutting back, this is the time to do it, while the sap is less active and the plant is less likely to bleed and become weakened. Cut out dead or diseased wood first then take out stems which are crossing to create a better shape. Remember to always cut above a bud, not too close but not too far and sloping away from the bud at a gentle angle to avoid rotting. Ponds can be cleared of leaves and rotting vegetation, but leave everything you have cleared on the side for a day or two to allow any pond beasties to crawl back in. You don’t need to keep a pond ice free if you don’t have fish, but if you want to give birds access to the pond try floating a ball on the surface. Any wind should push it around and stop ice forming.
r
While there’s less to do outside, don’t forget to keep an eye on houseplants. Most appreciate a rest from flowering in winter so you don’t need to feed them unless they are flowering. You should also cut back on watering. Let the compost surface dry slightly between watering and don’t leave them standing in water as this will cause root rot. Most don’t like being near open fires, draughts or being exposed to frosty windowsills.
Merry Xmas folks. If you’re like us and found this year hard going, just remember next year’s garden TOP TIP!
If you’re cleaning plots and beds outside only compost healthy material – otherwise you’re transferring disease from one season to the next. 06/11/2018 18:16
