Hi Readers What to say?! I’ve thought long and hard on this and there are a lot of opinions about a lot of things and I don’t think my inbox can take anymore ‘opinions’ on what I’ve written – so I’m going with 2 unrelated things this month……take it as you will…. 1. I was lucky enough to go to uni and apart from the life style/nightlife, the best thing I learned was about sources of information. Primary, Secondary and Tertiary, multiple sources and analyse, analyse, analyse! There are several experts in every field, they don’t always agree and there are flaws in every study, opinion, findings – it was my job to find them. Find the conflicting opinions, read them all, and critique them – it’s hard when you don’t personally agree but as my tutor said to me on many, many occasions…….my opinion doesn’t matter. #justsaying 2. It was my birthday this month – lockdown birthday – I think we’ve nearly all had one by now and some people are coming up to birthday lockdown number 2. Last year we were throwing axes and watching the ice hockey. However, I did make the best of it….Mr Emily organised a Zoom murder mystery evening with the fam-i-lam! We all got into character, we all
stayed in our own homes and we all had some nice drinks (which helped with the accents no end…honest!!). Most fun and excitement we’ve all had in nearly a year – highly recommend it! Finally, lots for everyone to read this month. Just so you know, we are still allowed to work and our distributors can’t deliver from home so are ok to continue, whilst adhering to the rules. Most people were wonderful last month as anticipated but just note, if you don’t want to receive the mag, just put a visible note in the window and we won’t deliver in future. Stay safe & happy reading, Happy New Year!
Emily x

Look After Yourself In all the advice, warnings and other information being fed to us about Covid 19 from the government and health officials, one thing conspicuously missing has been how to balance our own immune systems and strengthen our bodies. Surely, in amongst all the scary stuff about wearing face masks and constant hand washing, it would have been useful to show people that changing diets and eating more healthily could be a major influencer in how they react to the virus?
(ideally half your plate should be vegetables) nuts, seeds, and legumes. Cut out (or greatly limit) white bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice and DITCH the sweet stuff! Sugar is one of the most inflammatory substances we can put into our body!
Perhaps someone, somewhere, decided that it would be too difficult for us to understand. Perhaps it was easier to try and keep everyone frightened and in face coverings instead of offering useful dietary advice? Or perhaps I’m being a conspiracy theorist?
Move more! You don’t have to join a gym to get fitter. Go for walks, use the stairs instead of lifts, set your mobile or wearable device to remind you to get of your bum every hour or so. Dance – as well, or as badly as you like. Just move more and your body will thank you.
Doctors and scientists agree that you cannot BOOST your immune system – that simply isn’t possible. What you can do however is boost your physical health by eating healthily, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Becoming physically fitter and healthier gives your body and immune system a fighting chance should you be exposed to Covid 19. In other words, you may still catch it, but you have a better chance of not becoming seriously unwell.
Sleep isn’t just a time for us to relax after our busy days, it is also the time our bodies can set about repairing and renewing and our brains can process and store memories. Sleep deprivation, particularly when not enough REM and deep sleep occurs, can cause physical problems. We all know how groggy we feel and how badly we perform after a bad night’s sleep! Everyone has different sleep requirements though, so figure out what works best for you and make sure you get it.
The standard UK diet, heavy on processed foods, ‘beige’ carbs, and sugar laden foods is not conducive to a healthy body. Consider switching to a more ‘Mediterranean’ way of eating – this does not however mean eating vast amounts of pasta! Cutting out processed food and cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients is the key to eating well. Ditch the low fat idea and embrace using ‘good fats’ like olive oil and butter. Up your fish intake and decrease red meat consumption. Include plenty of green leafy vegetables

Book Review Bill Bailey has turned himself into something approaching a national treasure, with his appearances on Strictly, although he’s been around, if he’ll pardon the liberty, for quite a while. Lots of people will also know him for his other TV appearances, - QI, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Black Books, but he also does stand-up comedy and knows lots about music and birds. A talented chap. Now he’s added a new book, Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to Happiness: to his CV. It’s a light, warm and entertaining ride through the things that Bill finds fun, or simply, bring him happiness – a useful reminder in current times, that life can actually be quite enjoyable, although you may not want to follow some of his examples such as jumping out of a plane. A feel-good read. Another recent read from a funny man is No Shame, by Tom Allen. Tom came to most people’s attention as the host of after-show The Apprentice – You’re Fired, Bake Off and Mock the Week. He’s sharp, camp and funny and so is the book, although as it’s a memoir there are parts which make you want to give him a hug. It may also be one of those books where it helps to have a mental image of him talking while you’re reading it – either that or get the audiobook.

Our Families and Other Animals Do you have a pet? Until a couple of years ago I had a cat, the strangest of creatures – alternately affectionate and aloof, even vicious, and you could never tell which mood she’d be in at any given moment! She hated pet carriers with a passion, as many a claw inflicted wound to my hands and arms (even my back once!) would attest. Trips to the vets, or house moving, were a nightmare of the highest order.
Sadly she ‘crossed the rainbow bridge’ on New Year’s Day 2018, completely out of the blue. I came downstairs (slightly the worse for wear after a New Year’s Eve party) and found her lying on the kitchen floor – unmoving apart from a slight rise and fall of her chest. Picking her up, I moved to a chair and, as I cradled her like a baby, she drew her last breath. It felt as if she had waited to say goodbye to me. Our pets squirm their way into our hearts and when they leave us, they leave a massive hole, we miss their antics and silly habits. Even the things that made us cross; like refusing to eat anything out of a tin in the case of Gabby cat; become endearing foibles when we look back at them. We (my other half and I) would love to welcome another fur baby into our home, BUT we currently live in a private rental that doesn’t allow pets, as so many rentals don’t for some reason. So we will have to make do for now with the antics of our neighbours various pets; at least seven dogs and a horse at the last count; and watching the sparrows, blue tits and other small birds which visit us daily to eat from the feeders my other half keeps well topped up with seeds. One day we will have a dog, he wants a mahoosive one – a Malamute to be precise! I would prefer something
20
smaller that sheds less hair and requires less grooming – I’m sure we’ll find a compromise eventually. Our pets give us so much unconditional love but there are so many other ‘hidden’ benefits too. A quick search online gave me these facts from the “Centers for Disease Control” in the USA: Some of the benefits of having a pet include: ✔
Decreased blood pressure
✔
Decreased cholesterol levels
✔
Decreased triglyceride levels
✔
Decreased feelings of loneliness
✔
Increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities
✔
Increased opportunities for socialisation
Perhaps I need to move again, to somewhere that will allow animals, it seems such a shame to miss out on all those health benefits doesn’t it? Rafa, Flake & Mitzy Rafa turns 12 this month and as such has adopted the position of ‘wise, elder statesmen’. His responsibilities include monitoring everyone’s eating habits and making sure they don’t leave anything tasty in the bins. Flake is about 4 years old. About, because he was rescued. His responsibilities include greeting everyone who comes to the office and collecting cuddles. Finally, there is Mitzy, our cat. She always finds a nice place to sleep and is far too busy to do any work. Emily & Liam, The Voice Owners
George & Penelope Meet My Pets I have two beautiful cats, brother and sister George and Penelope, my indoor little babies. George is the Ginger, Penelope is the black-white, they are almost two years old. They spend most of the day fast asleep, but when they are awake you can either find them in the bath pushing the taps on to splash the water or standing in the water bowl! These two absolutely love nothing more than being wet or chasing each other around the house and play fighting. Danielle, The Voice Team
George Name:George, Breed: Frug, Born: Oct 2020 We welcomed George to our Family and we think he has fitted in super! He is really playful, full of life and has lots of character... such as chewing things that are not his! Paul, The Voice Team
Slinky & Oreo
Daisy, Tinker, Nell, Freddie & Gizmo
Nell & Freddie – Nell is nearly 13 and is so kind which shows in this photo with Freddie who is 10 and is the cuddlier out of the cats. Gizmo is nearly 11, he is so majestic and he knows it. He sleeps for about 23 hours a day and he’s a mummy’s boy. Tinker the Springer is 20 months old and a real Tinker. He may look cute but he’s on fire! He loves everyone, especially delivery people, he tries to go with them. Daisey is Gizmos sister and Freddie’s half-sister. She is in charge of all the animals except Tinker, which is why she just has to use her claws to sort him out but he doesn’t retaliate he just keeps on wagging. Jude, The Voice Team
Bailey Boo Bailey is my funny, loopy, crazy rescue English Springer Spaniel. He is 2.5 years old but acts like a puppy. He answers to many names like Bailey Boo, Boopy, Boopise Lou, Pudding, Fat Pudding, Bubba, Sir Boopsalot and a few others that cannot be repeated in print! He loves his ball and would do anything for it, so much so we have to be careful near any big drops when we are out walking. He also has a maddening habit of thinking he is helping with the washing by walking around with our socks with his tail wagging!!! But he is a very good cuddler!!!! Lisa, The Artliff Team
Caper, Poppy & Ruby This is Caper, Ruby and Poppy the Blackwell Bog Snorkeling team. Poppy might be little but she is in charge of finding the best mud. Maggi, The Voice Team The team are fuelled by cocktail sausages and cheese whenever possible.
Slinky is our dachshund puppy (think Toy Story!). Slinky is playful and loves nothing more than chewing our socks! He is now getting used to walks, although he never wants to leave the house! He is also a foodie and sits like a meerkat when he wants a treat! .....Oreo is our 4 year old cat, he loves food, sleep and spends his days laying around the house avoiding the dog (they’re not best friends yet!) Pippa went missing on November 8th 2020. She is small, timid, and a therapy dog for Luke. Luke is autistic and PIPPA was his comfort friend. Pip pips as we call her was inseparable from Luke. She helped him manage his autism and anxiety. Pippa had a calming effect on him. Luke has gone downhill since Pips has gone. He is heartbroken and simply doesn’t understand how someone could keep her. Pippa is such an important part of our lives Daily tasks which are normal to you and I are so hard for him, but Pippa would nudge him on. She slept with him giving him the comfort he needs at night. Pips was his cuddle buddy and friend. Since going missing, Pippa has grown a network of supporters online. In the search for my son’s pooch, we have had kind gestures and messages from all over the UK I feel exhausted by the ordeal
and had to keep a lot of information away from Luke. Along with many friends and family we searched around a five-mile radius of where she went from. We’ve had drones out too. Posters are everywhere I’ve been talking to local postmen/police and vets Luke is so lost without her, that he has kindly been offered a puppy, but he says no. He is positive Pippa is coming home I’m lost without her too, she is so naughty and mischievous, and made us both laugh. We would play piggy in the middle with a sensory ball and Pips loved this game. Its breaking my heart. She is still missing, now believed to be Stolen from Newark By Sheila Sims

Ditch Your PPE Responsibly! Since the wearing of face coverings became mandatory in England, the litter left in many of our towns and villages, has sadly included disposable face masks. Single wear plastic gloves can also be seen dropped carelessly on the ground. Worse yet is the fact that these disposable items are making their way into rivers and streams where fish and other wildlife can become entangled in them. Gloves and facemasks dropped in the countryside are hazardous to both wildlife and farm animals who can ingest them causing digestive issues and possibly death. Suffocation by the airways being blocked is also possible. Even biodegradable gloves made of latex will take time to decompose and remain a hazard to wildlife for a considerable period of time. Gloves and face masks are also ending up in our oceans in vast quantities posing a threat to marine life. Even before the pandemic, our oceans were being threatened by plastic pollution, ranging from the detritus of everyday human life like plastic bottles, to so called ‘microplastics’ which are tiny pieces of plastic from a multitude of sources. Disposal face masks contain plastic (usually polypropylene) and have a ‘lifespan’ of around 450 years…that’s almost half a century that a carelessly discarded mask could float around in the sea like a hideous manmade blue jellyfish. On a human level, every disposable piece of PPE dropped on a street by someone too lazy to put it in a bin, or back in a pocket or bag, will have to be cleared up by another person. Why should a street cleaner have to deal with potentially contaminated material? The stock answer to dealing with plastic problems is recycling. Unfortunately, these single use items are made
30
of various different types of plastic meaning the cost of sorting, separating, and recycling exceeds the value of the resultant recycled material! Naturally, in a capitalist driven world, this means no one is prepared to undertake PPE recycling – it doesn’t make economic sense. What can we do to mitigate this potential eco disaster? It’s quite simple really - isn’t it? STOP using disposable face masks and switch to fabric ones that you wash at home on a regular basis. There are endless options out there now, face coverings have even become a bit of a fashion statement with some high end fashion houses creating ‘designer masks’ to match their clothes! For a few pounds (unless you choose the designer option of course) you can have several masks to wear and wash in rotation. As for disposable gloves, there is actually very little point in them to be honest. You are far, far better off ensuring great hand hygiene. Wash your hands regularly and use the hand sanitiser stations which seem to be everywhere now.
Let’s try to ensure that a human pandemic doesn’t wind up causing an ecological nightmare too. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www. landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Nurses – We Salute You! The Covid 19 pandemic continues to hold us in its tenacious grasp and we give thanks to our NHS doctors and nurses for being there to care for us (although a salary increase would benefit them more in my opinion) but how often do we stop to think about the history of nursing?
But back to nursing. Pre 16th century the term nurse was generally taken to mean “wet nurse”, that is a woman who breastfeeds the babies of other women. The very word “nurse” actually stems from the Latin word “nutrire”, meaning to suckle. If you needed medical care that couldn’t be provided by your family or the local wise woman (such women later being regarded as “witches” by the church) you took yourself of to the nearest monastery or convent. These religious centres were often funded by the wealthy elite as a way of “buying their way into heaven”. Wealthy families would also offer large dowries for their daughters to become “brides of Christ” and this money would finance a convent’s provision of aid to the poor and sick. The “nursing” care provided to the sick, dying and injured was more akin to religious support than any type of medical provision – but it was doubtless better than nothing at all.
It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that nursing began to be recognised as a valued profession, the couple of hundred years in between having relegated nursing to the lowest of domestic services. As medicine became more scientific, with drugs, surgery, etc, it became apparent that a more skilled form of nursing care was required. When Florence Nightingale arrived in the Crimea in 1855 she actually capitalised on that need, rather than creating a new kind of nursing she formalised it, and so “Nightingale Nursing” was developed. A fund set up by members of the public to support Florence’s style of care raised the equivalent in today’s money of £2mill, and upon her return to England she used those funds to establish a training school for nurses at St Thomas’s Hospital, London. Modern nursing, begun by Florence Nightingale and cherished (by the public, at least) today. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www. landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

When Henry 8th dissolved the monasteries and moved England to Protestantism most of these early “hospitals” would have been forcibly
closed and the “nursing nuns” sent back to their families. Perhaps they continued their good works, secretly caring for the sick and poor in their community but, likely as not, their families would have been keen to maintain the good grace of the King and have prevented them doing so.
W
Florence Nightingale, often cited as being the founder of modern nursing, has a connection with Derbyshire that not many of us are aware of. Her family spent summers at Lea Hurst, Holloway near Matlock. A beautiful house now fully restored to its former glory by Peter Kay (NOT the TV personality) and open as an upmarket bed and breakfast in non-lockdown times.

GARDENS
Watching out for Woodpeckers In woodlands and moorland edges across the Peak there are flocks of winter thrushes (fieldfares and redwings), and especially where there are birch or alder trees, the smaller finches (siskins and lesser redpolls) move in noisy flocks. They are often intermingled with flocks of titmice and long-tailed tits which roam across the countryside in loose groups constantly calling and on the move. There is safety in numbers from the ever-present threat of local sparrowhawks. Separate and apart from these flocks, but tied to local woodland, are the woodpeckers. Across North Derbyshire and the Peak District we have three woodpecker species but only one is reasonably common. This is the great spotted woodpecker and can be seen (and more often heard) in almost any mature woodland across the region. They also come freely to gardens and will feed on peanut holders and on fat-balls too. As they approach the loud ‘chip-chip-chip’ call can be heard from the tops of tall trees. Another characteristic behaviour is to ‘hide’ behind a tree trunk and then to peep out as if to see if you are still there or still looking. The young birds have a distinctive red cap which does cause some confusion since it is a characteristic marking of our least common woodpecker, the lesser spotted. However, the lesser spotted woodpecker is small being approximately sparrow-sized; it is also very rare with a population now of only a few thousand birds across the entire country. So almost all the records I get sent are of greater spotted and not lesser. Nevertheless, it is still worthwhile watching out for this diminutive and often elusive little woodpecker. The best time
to see them, or rather more likely, to hear them, is from late February into April. At this time in mature woodland with dead and decaying old trees, there is always the chance to hear their high-pitched ‘kee-kee-kee-kee’ from a high-up branch or trunk. Both these species drum but lesser spotted is faster and softer than its bigger cousin. Our third woodpecker is Female Great altogether more Spotted discerning in its Woodpecker habitats than the great spotted and whilst it does visit gardens this is much less frequent. The green woodpecker is our largest species and a denizen of pine plantations, heathy moorland edge, and also, rather contrastingly, post-industrial sites such as reclaimed coal-mining landscapes. In the Peak, good places to see and again to hear green woodpeckers are around the upland water-supply reservoirs with their conifer plantations, and also at Longshaw and Padley Gorge. Sporting a dagger-like beak, a black eyepatch and moustache, and a bright red cap these beautiful birds are green but with a bright yellow rump. They spend a lot of time on the ground in search of their favourite food – ants. As with the other woodpeckers, their flight is characteristically undulating but the green woodpecker has a very distinctive and far-carrying laughing call known as a ‘yaffle’. Based on the call, this is also the old-fashioned countryman’s name for the bird. However, unlike the other woodpeckers, the green very rarely drums.

GARDENS
Gardener’s Calendar Signs of spring are what we’re looking for at the moment – and to be fair, there’s quite a few. Snowdrops, bluebells, hellebores are all either flowering or not too far off. Snowies and bluebells do best when planted “in the green” – whilst the leaves are still alive, rather than as dry bulbs so as soon as they’ve gone over you can lift and divide for a bigger show next year. Lift while the soil is moist, tease apart without damaging the roots and replant in small clumps to the same depth – where the stem changes colour from green to white.
r
Prune buddleias and hardy fuchsias – take the buddleias back to about three feet off the ground. With hardy fuchsias remove dead growth back to live shoots and buds. If the stems have died – as can happen even with hardies in a harsh winter, cut back to ground level but don’t damage new growth. If you grow mint it will probably be looking a bit sad and straggly. It will grow quite easily from root cuttings, so dig up a clump, cut the root into lengths and put in a pot – keep in warm conditions and it will produce new shoots which you can plant outside as soon as it gets a bit warmer.
TOP TIP!
Lots of gardeners are now growing the fabulously flamboyant Pampas grass. Cut back the old spears, taking them as far down as possible without damaging any new growth which may be starting to poke through. 06/11/2018 18:16
