Hi Readers What to say?! I’ve thought long and hard on this and there are a lot of opinions about a lot of things and I don’t think my inbox can take anymore ‘opinions’ on what I’ve written – so I’m going with 2 unrelated things this month……take it as you will…. 1. I was lucky enough to go to uni and apart from the life style/nightlife, the best thing I learned was about sources of information. Primary, Secondary and Tertiary, multiple sources and analyse, analyse, analyse! There are several experts in every field, they don’t always agree and there are flaws in every study, opinion, findings – it was my job to find them. Find the conflicting opinions, read them all, and critique them – it’s hard when you don’t personally agree but as my tutor said to me on many, many occasions…….my opinion doesn’t matter. #justsaying 2. It was my birthday this month – lockdown birthday – I think we’ve nearly all had one by now and some people are coming up to birthday lockdown number 2. Last year we were throwing axes and watching the ice hockey. However, I did
make the best of it….Mr Emily organised a Zoom murder mystery evening with the fam-ilam! We all got into character, we all stayed in our own homes and we all had some nice drinks (which helped with the accents no end…honest!!). Most fun and excitement we’ve all had in nearly a year – highly recommend it! Finally, lots for everyone to read this month. Just so you know, we are still allowed to work and our distributors can’t deliver from home so are ok to continue, whilst adhering to the rules. Most people were wonderful last month as anticipated but just note, if you don’t want to receive the mag, just put a visible note in the window and we won’t deliver in future. Stay safe & happy reading,
Emily x P.S Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Book Review Bill Bailey has turned himself into something approaching a national treasure, with his appearances on Strictly, although he’s been around, if he’ll pardon the liberty, for quite a while. Lots of people will also know him for his other TV appearances, - QI, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Black Books, but he also does stand-up comedy and knows lots about music and birds. A talented chap. Now he’s added a new book, Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to Happiness: to his CV. It’s a light, warm and entertaining ride through the things that Bill finds fun, or simply, bring him happiness – a useful reminder in current times, that life can actually be quite enjoyable, although you may not want to follow some of his examples such as jumping out of a plane. A feel-good read. Another recent read from a funny man is No Shame, by Tom Allen. Tom came to most people’s attention as the host of after-show The Apprentice – You’re Fired, Bake Off and Mock the Week. He’s sharp, camp and funny and so is the book, although as it’s a memoir there are parts which make you want to give him a hug. It may also be one of those books where it helps to have a mental image of him talking while you’re reading it – either that or get the audiobook.

The Circus Comes to Town It’s 1959 and the Circus has come to Alfreton: There’s great excitement in the town, with colourful Posters all around and Elephants on Mansfield Road making their way to the Big Top down on the Welfare.
From the Stage Magazine of April 30th 1959 ONE of the oldest and greatest names in English circus, Lord George Sanger, is still kept alive by members of this famous show family who travel a circus on the roads of Britain each year. We find them at Alfreton. The big top is a large two-pole affair measuring 90 feet round with a 40 foot centre in green canvas with striped white and green wallings. The two beast wagons and horse tent form a small zoo at the rear of the big top. All the loads, in familiar. Sanger tradition, are painted yellow with true show-land style lettering in red, and the directors’ wagons and artists’ trailers are in various pale shades. Most of the seating is the six tiered construction type with ringside seating and an old style V and bracket gallery section for the cheaper seats. Following the modern trend in this country, there are two ring entrances built on to the end of a box lorry drawn up just inside the big top.
in the show and programmed as the Sensational Rudellis, a polished balancing act on ladders. Using a rest commonly employed by foot jugglers, one girl supports the ladders of varying lengths by her feet while the blonde girl juggles high above. English favourites are Anton and Vianet with their very popular trapeze offering which must have appeared at nearly all the Variety theatres in this country. The male partner in the trapeze act, Claude Yelding, also performs the duties of ringmaster and presents Arabian horses and Shetland ponies from the Sanger Menage besides riding bareback with the Western Riders. The comic member of this act is Pat Freeman who also rides in Indian fashion. With his wife Muriel. He then presents a llama and pony novelty act, later appearing as Regnas with his comedy donkey and dog act. Sanger’s Abyssinian lionesses are presented by Albert Kean in a rectangular cage measuring only 16 ft by 6 feet. In a clowning role Albert also shows his performing pig. Bill. The Henry Biddall family numbering six have two first-class specialities in the form of a trampoline offering also using a fixed perch, and a brilliant flying rings display. Both acts are very well dressed and presented. Henry Biddall leads the comedy as clown. Spuds, with partner Ro Cooke, and third clown. Babs Zola makes a solo appearance with the thought reading pony.
First time here are Perry and Cacuell with a slack wire act from Germany. Novelty is the keynote and the male partner scores with his balancing code tail feat. His blonde partner is joined by another girl later

MANDY’S TRAVEL PAGE Hi I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor.
Beautiful Barbados beckons after lockdown As I write, holidays may seem so far away but we all need something to look forward to and to plan for. So, this month, i’ve picked this gem in the hope that it doesn’t go on the ‘no travel’ list and some of you are able to enjoy this fabulous place.
Sandy Lane, Barbados The grandest hotel on the island – and a celebrity magnet with one of the world’s most-papped beaches – still has a laidback Caribbean charm, with super-friendly staff dispensing impeccable levels of service. Expect an airport concierge on arrival, luggage packing and unpacking services, and sunlounger-side pampering including cold towels, water-misting and tropical drinks (and a no-tipping policy, meaning no awkward looking-for-your-wallet moments!).
An Illustrious Heritage The most famous of all Barbados resorts, Sandy Lane opened its doors on the island’s Platinum Coast on 1st January 1961, making 2021 a particularly special one to stay at the property and help celebrate its 60th birthday in style. The anniversary follows a grand reopening in late 2020 after extensive renovation work inside and outside its Palladian-
style buildings. The hotel occupies the site of the old Sandy Lane sugar plantation – chosen by former British politician Ronald Tree to realise his dream of opening a luxury hotel with a golf course. In danger of being taken over and expanded by a multi-national in the 1990s, it was saved by two Irishmen, Dermot Desmond and JP McManus, who were determined not only to preserve its unique atmosphere but to take it to a whole new level of luxury.
Dining Food is one of the highlights of any stay at Sandy Lane. Don’t miss Bajan Blue’s weekly West Indies buffet of dishes from Barbados and other Caribbean islands, from rum-scented pineapple salsa to Dominican pickled conch, from Jamaican jerk chicken to coconut-rum bouillon poached lobster tail or Saint Lucian stewed salt fish with dumplings. Other dining venues at Sandy Lane include romantic, open-air L’Acajou for French and Mediterranean fine dining on the beachfront, and The Country Club with its highly civilised golfer’s
cream teas.

Want a qualified teacher to help with home-schooling? Did you imagine this time last year that you’d soon be home-schooling your kids? Or that you’d be juggling this new educational challenge with working from home or your other daily commitments? Last year I certainly didn’t expect, temporarily, to be closing the doors on my new tutoring business and moving all my pupils online. But that’s what I’ve had to do. And it’s worked really well! Although I’d prefer to be teaching Maths and English in person in my Kip McGrath centre in Alfreton (and I’ll be doing it again soon when restrictions allow), tutoring online works far better than I could have imagined. That’s because Kip McGrath’s online learning tools allow me to sit, virtually, next to each of my students as I teach them. Using a unique, interactive whiteboard shared via their laptop, students can calculate, scribble and work out problems ‘live’ in their Kip workbooks, where I can see them do it. All tutors at Kip McGrath have to be fully qualified teachers. It’s what really makes the difference to a child’s tutoring experience. PET SERVICES
Our Families and Other Animals Do you have a pet? Until a couple of years ago I had a cat, the strangest of creatures – alternately affectionate and aloof, even vicious, and you could never tell which mood she’d be in at any given moment! She hated pet carriers with a passion, as many a claw inflicted wound to my hands and arms (even my back once!) would attest. Trips to the vets, or house moving, were a nightmare of the highest order.
Sadly she ‘crossed the rainbow bridge’ on New Year’s Day 2018, completely out of the blue. I came downstairs (slightly the worse for wear after a New Year’s Eve party) and found her lying on the kitchen floor – unmoving apart from a slight rise and fall of her chest. Picking her up, I moved to a chair and, as I cradled her like a baby, she drew her last breath. It felt as if she had waited to say goodbye to me. Our pets squirm their way into our hearts and when they leave us, they leave a massive hole, we miss their antics and silly habits. Even the things that made us cross; like refusing to eat anything out of a tin in the case of Gabby cat; become endearing foibles when we look back at them. We (my other half and I) would love to welcome another fur baby into our home, BUT we currently live in a private rental that doesn’t allow pets, as so many rentals don’t for some reason. So we will have to make do for now with the antics of our neighbours various pets; at least seven dogs and a horse at the last count; and watching the sparrows, blue tits and other small birds which visit us daily to eat from the feeders my other half keeps well topped up with seeds. One day we will have a dog, he wants a mahoosive one – a Malamute to be precise! I would prefer something
28
smaller that sheds less hair and requires less grooming – I’m sure we’ll find a compromise eventually. Our pets give us so much unconditional love but there are so many other ‘hidden’ benefits too. A quick search online gave me these facts from the “Centers for Disease Control” in the USA: Some of the benefits of having a pet include: ✔
Decreased blood pressure
✔
Decreased cholesterol levels
✔
Decreased triglyceride levels
✔
Decreased feelings of loneliness
✔
Increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities
✔
Increased opportunities for socialisation
Perhaps I need to move again, to somewhere that will allow animals, it seems such a shame to miss out on all those health benefits doesn’t it? Rafa, Flake & Mitzy Rafa turns 12 this month and as such has adopted the position of ‘wise, elder statesmen’. His responsibilities include monitoring everyone’s eating habits and making sure they don’t leave anything tasty in the bins. Flake is about 4 years old. About, because he was rescued. His responsibilities include greeting everyone who comes to the office and collecting cuddles. Finally, there is Mitzy, our cat. She always finds a nice place to sleep and is far too busy to do any work. Emily & Liam, The Voice Owners
George & Penelope Meet My Pets I have two beautiful cats, brother and sister George and Penelope, my indoor little babies. George is the Ginger, Penelope is the black-white, they are almost two years old. They spend most of the day fast asleep, but when they are awake you can either find them in the bath pushing the taps on to splash the water or standing in the water bowl! These two absolutely love nothing more than being wet or chasing each other around the house and play fighting. Danielle, The Voice Team
George Name:George, Breed: Frug, Born: Oct 2020 We welcomed George to our Family and we think he has fitted in super! He is really playful, full of life and has lots of character... such as chewing things that are not his! Paul, The Voice Team
Slinky & Oreo Slinky is our dachshund puppy (think Toy Story!). Slinky is playful and loves nothing more than chewing our socks! He is now getting used to walks, although he never wants to leave the house! He is also a foodie and sits like a meerkat when he wants a treat! .....Oreo is our 4 year old cat, he loves food, sleep and spends his days laying around the house avoiding the dog (they’re not best friends yet!)
Daisy, Tinker, Nell, Freddie & Gizmo
Nell & Freddie – Nell is nearly 13 and is so kind which shows in this photo with Freddie who is 10 and is the cuddlier out of the cats. Gizmo is nearly 11, he is so majestic and he knows it. He sleeps for about 23 hours a day and he’s a mummy’s boy. Tinker the Springer is 20 months old and a real Tinker. He may look cute but he’s on fire! He loves everyone, especially delivery people, he tries to go with them. Daisey is Gizmos sister and Freddie’s half-sister. She is in charge of all the animals except Tinker, which is why she just has to use her claws to sort him out but he doesn’t retaliate he just keeps on wagging. Jude, The Voice Team
Bailey Boo Bailey is my funny, loopy, crazy rescue English Springer Spaniel. He is 2.5 years old but acts like a puppy. He answers to many names like Bailey Boo, Boopy, Boopise Lou, Pudding, Fat Pudding, Bubba, Sir Boopsalot and a few others that cannot be repeated in print! He loves his ball and would do anything for it, so much so we have to be careful near any big drops when we are out walking. He also has a maddening habit of thinking he is helping with the washing by walking around with our socks with his tail wagging!!! But he is a very good cuddler!!!! Lisa, The Artliff Team
Caper, Poppy & Ruby This is Caper, Ruby and Poppy the Blackwell Bog Snorkeling team. Poppy might be little but she is in charge of finding the best mud. Maggi, The Voice Team The team are fuelled by cocktail sausages and cheese whenever possible. Maggi, The Voice Team

Ditch Your PPE Responsibly! Since the wearing of face coverings became mandatory in England, the litter left in many of our towns and villages, has sadly included disposable face masks. Single wear plastic gloves can also be seen dropped carelessly on the ground. Worse yet is the fact that these disposable items are making their way into rivers and streams where fish and other wildlife can become entangled in them. Gloves and facemasks dropped in the countryside are hazardous to both wildlife and farm animals who can ingest them causing digestive issues and possibly death. Suffocation by the airways being blocked is also possible. Even biodegradable gloves made of latex will take time to decompose and remain a hazard to wildlife for a considerable period of time. Gloves and face masks are also ending up in our oceans in vast quantities posing a threat to marine life. Even before the pandemic, our oceans were being threatened by plastic pollution, ranging from the detritus of everyday human life like plastic bottles, to so called ‘microplastics’ which are tiny pieces of plastic from a multitude of sources. Disposal face masks contain plastic (usually polypropylene) and have a ‘lifespan’ of around 450 years…that’s almost half a century that a carelessly discarded mask could float around in the sea like a hideous manmade blue jellyfish. On a human level, every disposable piece of PPE dropped on a street by someone too lazy to put it in a bin, or back in a pocket or bag, will have to be cleared up by another person. Why should a street cleaner have to deal with potentially contaminated material? The stock answer to dealing with plastic problems is recycling. Unfortunately, these single use items are made
of various different types of plastic meaning the cost of sorting, separating, and recycling exceeds the value of the resultant recycled material! Naturally, in a capitalist driven world, this means no one is prepared to undertake PPE recycling – it doesn’t make economic sense. What can we do to mitigate this potential eco disaster? It’s quite simple really - isn’t it? STOP using disposable face masks and switch to fabric ones that you wash at home on a regular basis. There are endless options out there now, face coverings have even become a bit of a fashion statement with some high end fashion houses creating ‘designer masks’ to match their clothes! For a few pounds (unless you choose the designer option of course) you can have several masks to wear and wash in rotation. As for disposable gloves, there is actually very little point in them to be honest. You are far, far better off ensuring great hand hygiene. Wash your hands regularly and use the hand sanitiser stations which seem to be everywhere now.
Let’s try to ensure that a human pandemic doesn’t wind up causing an ecological nightmare too. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Local Plumber Goes Green with buy a boiler, plant a tree offer Plumbing and heating engineers Dan Morris and Oran Pickering aren’t just giving their customers warm homes and beautiful bathrooms – they’re all fired up about helping to save our planet at the same time. And they’re doing it by planting a tree every time they fit a new boiler. Dan and Oran are partners in Direct Plumbing and Heating Solutions Ltd which serves an area ranging from Alfreton and Nottingham to Buxton and the High Peak. They always encourage customers to go for the most energy efficient boilers when putting in central heating. It doesn’t just save people money but it helps the environment. But they wanted to go one step further in reducing their carbon footprint and help with climate control and came up with the idea of helping to offset the use of natural resources like gas and oil by planting a tree each time. “We’ve both got young children” said Oran “My little girl Lily May is five and loves being outdoors and Dan’s daughter Lola is just coming up to one, and we got to thinking how we could help the environment not just now but into the future - when they grow up. “One of our customers has got a few acres of land set around an old mill near Ashbourne and he agreed we could use
38
some of it to create a wood. We’re taking advice from the Woodland Trust but we’re really keen to put in trees that are declining nationally like oaks.” The partners are buying the young trees and will be personally planting them from spring onwards. “We’ve had a fantastically positive response from customers” said Dan. “I think people are really pleased to think they’ll be putting something back into the environment. And we’re keeping everyone up to date with progress through our social media site.” (could put in the site ?) The guys met at college 15 years ago, but have been in business together for the past year, covering a wider area and combining their customer base. As fully qualified engineers they do everything from installing bathrooms and other plumbing work to domestic and commercial heating installation. “At the moment we’re thinking it will be about fifty trees a year, but if it really takes off maybe more people might donate a bit of land and we can take it further,” said Oran. So, there could soon be new woods all over our area, thanks to Dan and Oran and their customers - and powered through central heating.

You may (or not!) agree with me but....
..........unlike many, I remained highly sceptical about the relentless optimism coming from No 10 throughout the 2020 pandemic. Up to a point I can understand why, but personally, I’d rather have had a deal more realism and pragmatism than the constant ‘world beating’ pronouncements from our tousled hair leader. Having said that, I wouldn’t have fancied his job because he has been in a ‘damned if I do and damned if I don’t’ situation and was never going to please everyone. However, I have absolutely no sympathy with those who feel sorry for him because he has had to deal with:a. suffering the long term effects of Covid-19 b. he fall-out from Dominic Cummings’ ‘sightseeing’ trip to Durham c. the seemingly never ending, but now thankfully concluded, Brexit negotiations. d. the disruption to family life following the birth of baby Wilfred. Call me hard hearted if you like but was coronavirus not contracted after he disregarded initial Government advice by going around shaking hands with all and sundry in addition to attending non socially distanced Cabinet meetings? Did he not appoint Dominic Cummings? Was he not one of the key Brexit disciples convincing a minority of the population that Britain should, to use current parlance, ‘unfriend’ Europe? Finally, unless Carrie knows any different, he must surely take full responsibility for baby Wilfred’s arrival. As I’ve said, I’d sympathise with whoever had to deal with one of the greatest peacetime crises the nation
(entire planet in reality) has had to deal with, but in my opinion, Boris has not helped himself. Still, there now appears to be clear light at the end of what has been a very long tunnel. As a result, while reflecting upon the mistakes that have been made and mourning those who have succumbed to Covid-19, let’s look forward to a better future.
We Brits are very resilient and one characteristic that has shone brightly during the last twelve months has been our unique sense of humour. I’m sure I‘m not alone, and guess that most of us have had emails containing satirical videos and assorted memes that have kept us smiling through even the darkest of days. Well, with apologies for those of you who have already seen it, I repeat below, a most troublesome message that landed in my in-box in December. This is important - you must be extremely vigilant Should you receive an email with the words ‘Knock Knock’ in the subject title, please, whatever you do, don’t open it. It is a message from Jehovah’s Witnesses who are working from home! You have been warned. Until next month........Boom Boom! PS - as I write (2nd January) I’m confident that today will the last day that I’m force fed Christmas leftovers for breakfast, lunch/dinner and tea. Happy New Year to you all!

View from the Allotment
Rather stupidly I didn’t follow my own advice of last month not to dig very wet soil - and have now had a painful back for well over a week keeping me away from my plot. Hopefully a visit to a physiotherapist soon will help. So do as I say not as I do - wait for your soil to dry out a bit before tackling any last minute digging manure in. Back pain is very debilitating! Going on about soil, how healthy is yours? Have you measured its pH at different sites round your plot recently? You might be surprised at the differences. Get yourself a soil test kit from a Garden Centre or Amazon UK. I use pH papers after shaking up a teaspoonful of soil with some distilled water in a plastic 25ml screw top tube. You can buy pH meters which stick into moist soil but bending down to read the values at ground level is awkward. For general vegetable growing you want the pH to be neutral (pH7) or just slightly acid (pH6.5). There is a good RHS website on ‘Soil pH’ which is worth consulting. In soil that is too acid (pH<5) plants can’t extract the nutrients, bacteria can’t rot down organic matter and minerals are washed out more easily. Soils that are too acid can be treated with lime. I usually lime the bed where brassicas are to be grown anyway as the more alkaline pH helps keep the dreaded clubroot fungal infection at bay. Most plot holders have still got parsnips, leeks, brussels, winter cabbage and kale available to eat. Leeks need lifting when needed as they don’t store well but winter cabbages can be cut and stored in doors in a cool place. We are still eating the Crown Prince squash harvested in the late autumn last year. They make a delicious soup. It’s not too late to divide your rhubarb crowns if they are getting large. If the weather is fairly mild, sow broad beans and peas out doors plus shallots and cloves of garlic. I prefer the ‘Longor’ or Eschalion type shallots if you can get them as sets as I find they are easier to handle in the kitchen. Your seed potatoes should be chitting by now. I am only growing Charlotte and Kestrel this year as they seem to do well on our plot Phone Mick our plot Bailiff on 07725402033 about availability on our Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment site and become an allotmenteer with your family in 2021.

Signs of spring are what we’re looking for at the moment – and to be fair, there’s quite a few. Snowdrops, bluebells, hellebores are all either flowering or not too far off. Snowies and bluebells do best when planted “in the green” – whilst the leaves are still alive, rather than as dry bulbs so as soon as they’ve gone over you can lift and divide for a bigger show next year. Lift while the soil is moist, tease apart without damaging the roots and replant in small clumps to the same depth – where the stem changes colour from green to white.
r
Prune buddleias and hardy fuchsias – take the buddleias back to about three feet off the ground. With hardy fuchsias remove dead growth back to live shoots and buds. If the stems have died – as can happen even with hardies in a harsh winter, cut back to ground level but don’t damage new growth. If you grow mint it will probably be looking a bit sad and straggly. It will grow quite easily from root cuttings, so dig up a clump, cut the root into lengths and put in a pot – keep in warm conditions and it will produce new shoots which you can plant outside as soon as it gets a bit warmer.
TOP TIP!
Lots of gardeners are now growing the fabulously flamboyant Pampas grass. Cut back the old spears, taking them as far down as possible without damaging any new growth which may be starting to poke through. 06/11/2018 18:16

Lasting Powers of Attorney Throughout this year's pandemic we have helped many of our vulnerable clients write and register their Powers of Attorney. Power of Attorney ensure your trusted carer can help you with things like paying your bills and coordinating your healthcare.
This includes deciding where the safest location is for you during the upcoming flu season. Your family may want to have you stay with them in the safety of their own home. But without a Power of Attorney, your family cannot legally remove you from the care home. The government has confirmed that writing and signing your Will or Powers of Attorney is an essential reason to leave your home during lock-down. But to keep you safe we are able to help you complete most of the paperwork by post, phone, video call or email.
To get started call us today on 01623 665 050. We are happy to answer questions and give you a formal quote.
